It all started with the idea of transforming the light blue color of my bedroom into a neutral jade green. I wanted to achieve that harmonious combination with white that I already have in the living room and hallway, using a soft shade with grayish undertones that conveys peace and relaxation. My plan was to get a head start, before the chaos and last-minute rush typical of December set in—that time of year when we all want to spruce up our homes at the last minute.

However, when I started the project, I made a crucial decision: before rushing headlong into the work, I took the time to examine each wall in detail. I began to scrutinize the surface with a magnifying glass, identify its flaws, and figure out what needed to be done and how to do it correctly so that the restoration would be truly effective. In the past, I made the mistake of seeing something dirty or unsightly and simply slapping layers of paint over it; over time, the stain or moisture would always resurface. Today, I finally understood the real causes and why each wall has different needs and requires a different treatment.

To carry out the work, I’ve had one essential helper: my teenage son, Danielito. He’s my great teammate and the one who helps me with the heavy lifting. Since Danielito is currently on break from school but has his sports commitments, we’ve had to coordinate and make the most of his free time to work on the project little by little.

That’s why the project has taken a few more days than expected—not just because of my training sessions, but because each step of the restoration has its own specific process and treatment that must be followed: the disinfection time, the drying of the stucco, and the curing of the oil paint. Far from discouraging me, I realized that we shouldn’t rush things if we want a flawless result.

Furthermore, this learning process in my room was an eye-opener: I realized that these issues aren’t limited to my room but extend to other areas of my apartment. Every wall in my home has different needs; on some, there isn’t much left to do beyond basic maintenance, but on others, I’ll have to apply specific treatments depending on the type of damage.

The Exact Diagnosis: Special Treatment for Each Wall

By meticulously examining the structure of my room, I determined the exact procedure each surface needed, following the actual layout of the space:

1. The Window Wall and the Air Conditioner (The Only One with Mold)

This wall faces the outside of the building. It had an old moisture stain caused by my own air conditioner. It seemed to have dried out, but when I applied the first test coat of jade green paint, the shadow of the moisture reappeared on the surface.

On the other hand, right below the air conditioner was the baseboard. When I moved it, I discovered the most critical area: a concentration of mold and salt deposits, the result of leaks from the air conditioners on the upper floors. After my analysis, I determined that this was the only wall in the room that required deep disinfection with bleach and water (in a 1:3 ratio). I tore away all the rotten wainscoting down to the concrete block, washed it, let it dry with a fan blowing directly on it for 24 hours, and then leveled it with stucco.

2. Tree Wall (To the right of the window)

Some time ago, I painted a tree on this wall using cold-weather paint. Even when paint is applied over it, the outline of the drawing still shows through. In addition, the wall had several lines and imperfections that I took the opportunity to fill in and smooth out with stucco. The baseboard at the bottom was also weakened by moisture from the corner.

The Wall by the Door and the Lamp (Continuing to the Right)

Here you’ll find the lamp and the “ghostly” stain of coffee with milk that always seems to seep through the grease-soaked wall. The corner connecting this wall to the one by the tree was damaged by a leak coming from the floor above. Some time ago, I had a roof and floor built on the exterior of the building to stop the water from coming in; the leak stopped completely, but the wall retained the trapped internal moisture, which kept the wainscoting warped and weak, though there was no mold present.

4. Closet Wall (Opposite the Tree Wall)

This is the only wall in the room that is entirely interior. It is solid, clean, and sound, so it did not require any prior treatment or repa…

Combining this technical assessment with the help my teenage son provided during his sports breaks has allowed us to move forward steadily. My goal in sharing this experience is to encourage others to thoroughly inspect their spaces before painting this holiday season, ensuring that every drop of paint and every hour of effort translates into a lasting, beautiful, and high-quality result.
