[Movie] My take on From a House on Willow Street (Eng/Esp)

English version

When psychological horror mixes with crime, it often gives rise to interesting films, including some that aim to break the conventional mold of horror movies. That’s why I was really looking forward to seeing La posesión, since a movie-loving friend recommended it to me, although I later found out that its original title is From a House on Willow Street. A South African film released in 2016, written and directed by Alastair Orr, starring Sharni Vinson and Carlyn Burchell.

The story revolves around a group of criminals who instill fear and operate by their own rules, but then a supernatural force intervenes, amplifying their evil—leading to a series of bloody events as the viewer searches for explanations for what’s happening.

Hazel is the leader of a criminal gang that kidnaps Katherine—who appears to be harmless—in order to demand a ransom from her parents, a couple in the diamond business. They soon discover that nothing will be easy because the girl is possessed by a demonic entity. A massacre then ensues, with the peculiar twist that, before they die, this supernatural power intervenes so that each criminal must confront their past, their fears, and the sins that torment them.

Personally, I liked the cinematography; the sepia tones, along with the suffocating night, lend the film a touch of mystery, while the music provides the necessary accompaniment to set hearts racing. The suspense is handled very well in every scene; although it’s predictable that something is going to happen, the script surprises with the direction it takes.

Sharni Vinson (Hazel) was excellent as an unscrupulous woman capable of doing anything to get her way, but my applause goes to Carlyn Burchell (Katherine)—her performance is truly unsettling, and she conveys the split personality convincingly. The portrayal of a calm woman who becomes possessed and then returns to normal is outstanding, thanks to the extraordinary makeup and costume work.

The film incorporates two common themes in the horror genre: the first is the haunted house, and the second is the exorcism—elements that enhance the plot without ever getting in the way. Gore is also present; the director doesn’t shy away from showing bloodbaths, disfigured and eerie faces, and bizarre scenes that display great cruelty. The house becomes another character in its own right because it influences everyone else, as it harbors the curse of Tranguul (or Trangool), a very powerful demon. According to the story, in order to break his chains and be set free, he must consume four souls—one for each corner of hell where he is held captive.

This film fits perfectly into the thriller genre because the intrigue, suspense, and tension are carefully measured to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat, attentive to every movement and detail that unfolds. Clues are gradually revealed to uncover the true secret hidden by Katherine, the kidnapped woman, and everything related to her life before her possession.

This film is quite visually entertaining, but the most interesting aspect is the plot that drives the story. The idea of the haunted house, the demon seeking to take possession of souls, and all the events that unfold serve a purpose and are successfully executed—which is why The Possession isn’t just another gratuitous display of blood and gore.

From a House on Willow Street.
