[Movie] My take on Stevie (Eng/Esp)

English version

I’m returning to psychological horror films; in this case, I’m going to review Stevie, which was released in 2008. This film was directed by Bryan Goeres and stars Catherine McCormack and Jordi Mollá. I must say that the opening scenes are intriguing, as they draw the viewer into a story in which an orphaned girl disrupts the daily life of the married couple Claire and Adrián.

Of course, this first part of the story reminded me of the film The Orphan, which I had the chance to see a few years ago, but then things took a turn and the script went in a very different direction. It turns out that the couple, after suffering the loss of their unborn baby in a car accident, decides to adopt Isabel to fill that void.

The girl is traumatized after witnessing her father murder her mother and then commit suicide. Isabel’s arrival coincides with strange occurrences in the house; the girl attributes them to Stevie, her imaginary friend—a being capable of communicating through paranormal means.

The film maintains suspense and intrigue through its screenplay and strong performances; the girl and her adoptive mother, in particular, are convincing on screen. The same cannot be said for the husband, whose contribution to the plot is virtually nonexistent. However, as Stevie progresses, various theories regarding the entity’s presence in the house begin to take shape, but in a plot twist, the most far-fetched option is the one chosen for the resolution.

It’s worth noting that Stevie relies on clichés involving haunted houses and cursed children, as well as the skeptical father and the mother desperate to uncover what’s happening. By falling back on these somewhat overused plot devices, the film gradually loses its way; the tension slowly fades until it culminates in a very forced ending.

Emotions such as guilt, pain, grief, and a twisted desire for belonging are woven into the plot to try to shape the story’s conclusion. It turns out that the unborn child acts as a spiritual manifestation and residual energy, feeding off his mother’s fears.

The movie had some good scenes up to a point, but it leaves many loose ends along the way—the plot involving the orphaned girl, what happened to her parents, and why she can interact with immaterial beings. On the other hand, Isabel befriended a boy named Esteban at the orphanage who later died of cancer; for that reason, she calls the entity in her new home “Stevie,” suggesting that it was Esteban’s ghost who was with her. All of these plot points were left hanging.

The film ultimately falls apart, culminating in an absurd ending—because there’s no justification for all that mystery when Isabel had the answers just a few days after arriving at the house. Perhaps a different narrative path that had justified the earlier events would have been more satisfying. I was left feeling disappointed.

The beginning sounds really interesting, the little girl and the strange things happening in the house. But it ends in a way that feels confusing and disappointing.
