[Movie] My take on The Artifice Girl (Eng/Esp)

English version

Artificial Intelligence is gaining more ground every day due to its connection to technology and, of course, the internet, which is now ubiquitous throughout the world. AI has proven capable of performing countless tasks, replacing humans in various fields—including complex ones such as scientific calculations and reality simulation. It is within this context that Artificial Girl arrives—a science-fiction psychological thriller released in 2022.

Written, directed, and starring Franklin Ritch, this film gets off to a strong start. We meet two special police agents investigating a network of pedophiles operating online. They arrest and interrogate a boy they link to a girl whose images are circulating online, but this suspect turns out to be a brilliant programmer who, with the help of artificial intelligence, has developed a virtual girl capable of deceiving sexual predators due to her realism.

At this point, my expectations were high because of the story’s premise—AI is now a tangible reality, and what we once dreamed of in the fiction of Isaac Asimov and James Cameron is undoubtedly coming closer; Skynet seems increasingly within reach. However, this film begins to fall apart as its plot proves superficial. After the opening, the story slows down, as everything unfolds in rooms amid forgettable dialogue, far removed from the question of how an entity capable of consciousness and feelings—to the point of being able to deceive humans—was created.

The film features a cast that tries to win you over: Tatum Matthews (Cherry), Sinda Nichols (Deena), David Girard, Lance Henriksen, and Franklin Ritch (Gareth), who give such strong performances that Artificial Girl reminded me at times of the series Law & Order and CSI. However, the screenplay didn’t quite win me over; I feel that the plotlines don’t hold up, and as a result, the story doesn’t move forward.

The initial premise shifts toward questioning morality and ethics, since the police officers also interact with Cherry. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that it is a low-budget production and, as a result, does not delve deeply into the technology or programming required to create a virtual being that achieves such a high level of realism. The producers had the option of drawing on certain references but chose to ignore them.

So an initially interesting scene gradually loses its momentum, a trend that’s accentuated by the fact that the dialogue takes place in enclosed spaces, with actionless scenes that prompt the viewer to reflect and draw them away from the police investigation.

So Artificial Girl is yet another example of a story that starts at one point and never returns to it, inserts another story in the middle, and culminates in a disjointed and absurd scene. It’s decent at times, but honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it.

The idea behind this movie sounds really cool. I like how it mixes AI, crime, and moral questions.

It looks very interesting; this topic of artificial intelligence is one that requires a lot of analysis. I'd love to see it. !LADY
