Since I can remember, I have known the insect featured in this post as a congorocho. That is what we’ve always called it in my house, at my uncles' and aunts' houses, my cousins', my friends', in the neighborhood, and everywhere else. Although I must admit, I don't remember what they called it in my school biology class...
My oldest son is an insect expert because he loves them, especially beetles and similar species.
A few days ago, we were talking about one of those variants (the dung beetle), and for some reason, we brought up the aforementioned term. This led my son to look it up on the internet, and to our surprise, the term barely exists on the world wide web.
Mainly, it says that in Venezuela, millipedes are called that—something I had never heard in my life. That definition is given even by the Association of Spanish Language Academies. But no, Congorochos are those chubby little bugs that fly clumsily, crash into walls and windows, and make a lot of noise!
Even when it comes to local expressions, I’ve almost always found an answer somewhere on the www, but not this time.
That is why I decided that today's post, besides serving as my #HPUD post, would be dedicated to that word that is so criolla and so satisfying to pronounce, to reclaim the name of these little flying creatures that, when we were kids, made us run away from their buzzing.
Now you know: congorocho!
Or do they call it by another name in your area? If so, let me know in the comments section!
