The weekend training session wasn't over yet; after the soccer day wrapped up, it was time to head home. Santo Domingo is a neighborhood located in the Turbio River basin; right now, it's part of the riverbank. However, in the past, it was literally part of the river basin. I've heard many stories from people who claim that this river was once navigable.

So the soccer field is a few meters below the city of Barquisimeto, which was built on the peaks of some mountains that formed a sort of plateau. Therefore, to get out of there and back to our homes, we have to hike up the mountain for about 30 minutes—which is another considerable physical effort.

El entrenamiento del fin de semana no había terminado, luego de cerrar la jornada futbolística, toca el regreso a casa. Santo Domingo es un barrio que está ubicado en el cauce del río Turbio, ahora mismo es parte de la orilla. Sin embargo, en el pasado era literal parte de la cuenca. He escuchado muchas historias de personajes que aseguran que este río fue navegable en algún momento.

Así que el campo de futbol está unos cuantos metros por debajo de la ciudad de Barquisimeto, que fue construida sobre las cimas de unas montañas que formaron una especie de planicie. Entonces, para poder salir de allí y llegar a nuestros hogares, es necesario realizar una caminata de montaña de aproximadamente 30 minutos, es decir, otro esfuerzo físico considerable.

Fortunately, my friend King was with his partner, and together we set out on the climb. There’s a flight of stairs that seems endless, but the nice thing is that on either side you can always see families sitting there, enjoying a Sunday afternoon, chatting, playing dominoes, or finishing up some household chores.

Afortunadamente, mi amigo King andaba con su pareja y juntos emprendimos la subida. Hay unas escaleras que parecen interminables, lo bueno es que a los lados siempre puedes ver familias sentadas allí compartiendo una tarde de domingo, conversando, jugando dominó o terminando de hacer cualquier oficio del hogar.

Another thing that always catches my attention is the spectacular view of Barquisimeto stretching from one end to the other; it’s as if they had built a “parapet” and then constructed the city along it. You can see this view right as you cross Ribereña Avenue, which was the most important thoroughfare until the ring road was built to connect the east and west sides of Venezuela’s “musical capital.”

Otras de las cosas que siempre me llama la atención es la vista espectacular de la distancia de punta a punta de lo que es Barquisimeto, es como si hubiesen hecho un "pretil" y allí fuesen realizado la ciudad. Esa vista es posible justo cuando se cruza la avenida Ribereña, la más importante hasta que se construyó la circunvalación que conecta el este con el oeste de la capital musical de Venezuela.

But the most spectacular view is when you dare to look further south; from up here, you can see the entire riverbed, the soccer field, and, beyond that, the mountains adorned by the Macuto Forest, as well as the mid-mountain villages.

Pero lo mas espectacular es cuando uno se atreve a voltear la mirada mas hacia el sur, desde arriba puedes ver todo el cauce que marca el río, el campo de futbol y mas allá las montañas adornadas por el bosque Macuto, además de los caseríos de media montaña.

Physically, I was at a disadvantage; my friend and his partner are seasoned marathon runners. Every day they go out and run long distances—at one time for competitive purposes, but now they do it for their health and because they enjoy it. The truth is, I had to prove myself to demonstrate my strength and what I’d learned during my time in the mountains that border the valley of my beautiful town of Curarigua.

En lo físico tenia desventaja, el amigo y su compañera son maratonistas de larga trayectoria. Todos los días salen y corren largas distancias, en algún tiempo con fin competitivo, pero ahora mismo lo realizan por salud y porque les gusta. Lo cierto es que tuve que batirme en duelo para demostrar mi fortaleza y mi aprendizaje cuando me la pasaba en las montañas que bordean el valle de mi hermoso pueblo de Curarigua.

After climbing, they headed down along both sides of San Vicente Avenue, and I continued home along Fuerzas Armadas Avenue. It was a wonderful Sunday—with bright sunshine, friendly competition, and the chance to strengthen long-standing sports friendships.

Después de subir, ellos bajaron hacia los lados de la avenida San Vicente y yo continué a casa por la avenida Fuerzas Armadas. Un domingo bueno, de sol radiante, competencia sana y de fortalecimiento de las amistades deportivas de años.
