Even though I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: most of the series or movies I decide to watch are the result of stumbling upon—and being captivated by—recommendations, summaries, or reviews on social media. These discoveries help me broaden my horizons and find inspiration for my writing here. This time, a video clip from a spin-off of one of Venezuela’s most popular series popped up in my feed; it returns to the sitcom format and targets a younger audience, once again showcasing the entertaining dynamics of characters we first met back in 2007—characters who became icons of Venezuelan pop culture for about a decade.
Aunque ya lo haya dicho antes, lo repetiré: la mayoría de las series o películas que me animo a ver son porque a través de las redes sociales me maravillo con ciertas recomendaciones, resúmenes o reseñas en donde cada vez voy conociendo y diversificándome; así me inspiro para poder escribir aquí. En esta oportunidad, me salió un video de un corto de esta serie, pues esta es un spin-off de una de las series venezolanas más populares; en donde se vuelve al formato de sitcom y se dirige al público juvenil, nuevamente mostrando una divertida dinámica para alguno de los personajes que conocimos por allá en el 2007 y que se volvió cultura popular venezolana como por una década.
NPS (No Puede Ser—Spanish for "It Can't Be") is a series from the television network Venevisión, created by Vladimir Pérez and directed by Eduardo Antonio Pérez. It follows the program Luchando por la Fama ("Fighting for Fame"), in which six young female contestants compete to be "the winner" through daily challenges. These challenges showcase a range of talents and great versatility, spanning everything from artistic abilities to the practical skills required for routine tasks—all set on a working farm.
Bueno, NPS es una serie de la cadena de televisión “Venevisión”, creada por Vladimir Pérez y dirigida por Eduardo Antonio Pérez. Este sigue el programa “Luchando por la Fama", en donde 6 competidoras juveniles y femeninas compiten por ser “la ganadora” con retos diarios en donde demuestran distintos talentos y una gran versatilidad en dichos retos, que van desde sus talentos como artistas hasta sus cualidades en tareas rutinarias que alguien debe tener, todo esto en una hacienda donde se crían animales de granja.
The lead actors are Sheryl Rubio, Rosmeri Marval, and Hendrick Bages—who, coincidentally, are the only characters returning from the spin-off series Somos Tú y Yo. Rosmeri and Sheryl constantly vie for the attention of Hendrick, the handsome son of the estate's owner who also handles technical issues there. Throughout the series, they compete for both fame and the handsome guy, engaging in amusing antics and situations that keep young audiences glued to the screen—an effect heightened by the diverse personalities of the show's characters.
Como actores principales están Sheryl Rubio, Rosmeri Marval y Hendrick Bages, casualmente, siendo los únicos personajes que vienen de su serie derivada “Somos Tú y Yo". Rosmery y Sheryl compiten seguidamente por la atención de Hendrick, el chico guapo e hijo de la dueña de la hacienda y quien atiende los problemas técnicos allí. Estos, durante toda la serie, viven en la competencia por la fama y por el chico guapo, con divertidas ocurrencias y situaciones que mantienen al público juvenil en la pantalla y aún más con las diversas personalidades que hay en los personajes de este programa.
Naturally, there is more to this series and its amusing situations; each of the girls displays her own quirks and distinct interests, yet they all share the same goal of reaching the finale, facing various challenges that boost their popularity scores. As I mentioned, they have distinct personalities: Sheryl is calm and passionate; Rosmery and Roxy are friends and "preppy" types; Laura is the intellectual one; Abril is a skater who lacks a feminine touch; and last but not least, there is Tina—the tough girl, the type who thinks she is perfect in any situation.
Obviamente, hay más en esta serie, con sus situaciones divertidas; cada una de las chicas muestra distintas ocurrencias, pues cada una tiene intereses distintos, pero el mismo objetivo de llegar a la final, con distintos retos que van subiendo sus puntos de popularidad. Como ya dije, estas tienen distintas personalidades, por lo menos: Sheryl es una chica tranquila y apasionada; Rosmery y Roxy son amigas y “sifrinas”; Laura es una chica intelectual; Abril es una patinetera y alguien con falta de feminidad y, por última y no menos importante, está Tina, la chica ruda, de esas que se creen perfectas frente a cualquier situación.
This series is an icon of Venezuelan television; it defines the entire generation of the 2000s—those of us who grew up with its music and its long run on screen. We know the significance of such series in our pop culture; this show sparked a distinct fashion trend, and to this day, we still use its memes and references as a testament to that legacy.
