Things change as time goes by—even the names of the things we do, the streets we walk down, and more.

It also depends on what you’re making—there are differences and advantages to each. Take banners and pennants, for example. Both can be made from fabric, but banners are mostly horizontal, while pennants are mostly vertical. So I’ve made both on paper and fabric when possible, since vinyl requires special computerized machines.

Recently, a neighbor contacted me to make a sign for a yard sale she was holding at her house, but she wasn’t really sure what she wanted. She brought me something she had on cardstock, but it was hard to figure out exactly what she was looking for. I suggested making it out of fabric so it would last longer and she could wash it; she liked the idea, so we closed the deal.

I always start by making a rough draft or sketch, show it to the client, and if they approve, I proceed with the design. Here’s what the sketch looked like:

Materials:

-White fabric. -Acrylic paints in various colors. -Paintbrushes. -Pencil, paper. -Sewing machine.

Let’s Get to Work on the Banner:

-It’s not like I do this all the time, but every now and then I buy fabric—preferably white—for banners or signs. I make sure it’s not too thick so I can see the design clearly when I trace it. Thank goodness I had some fabric on hand, because they ask for things on short notice, but it all worked out.

-The fabric is 0.75 wide and 1.00 long; the vertical banners should look like a rectangle, longer than they are wide.

image.png

-Since it had a somewhat outdated design, I washed it thoroughly and it came out looking like new. Once dry, the first step is to sew the edges along one narrow side—about 1 cm wide—with a double seam, and wider at the top and bottom since that’s where a tube or broomstick will be inserted.

image.png

-I transfer the design to the images on the computer so I can enlarge it to the desired size; to do this, I use and glue recycled paper, then trace the design with a pencil.

image.png

image.png

-Once I've copied the design, I transfer it to the fabric, from top to bottom.

image.png

-Now it’s time to paint. I was once told to place a plastic sheet underneath, because I used to use newspaper—which, by the way, is hard to come by these days—and it tends to stick to the fabric and takes a long time to remove. So I found a large plastic bag, opened it up, and pinned it underneath the fabric.

-I painted first the letters, then the flowers, using one color after another. I chose colors that would stand out against the white fabric and be visible from a distance.

My daughter asked why there weren’t any Christmas decorations; it’s because our neighbor usually holds bazaars—not just at Christmas.

Then I went to check out my neighbor's bazaar, and the banner looked spectacular.

And the neighbor is happy with her banner, too…
