Alice in Borderland is a series that has some of the best fight scenes I have seen. Absolute cinematic mayhem.
Season 1 was released on Netflix on December 10, 2020, the eight-episode first season is adapted from Haro Aso’s manga of the same name and directed by Shinsuke Sato.
Genre:Sci-fi mystery-thriller with heavy survival-horror and psychological elements.
Premise. Ryohei Arisu is a directionless young man in modern Tokyo who spends most of his time playing video games and hanging out with his two close friends, the outgoing Karube and the more awkward Chota. One ordinary day the three of them find themselves in a completely emptied-out version of the city. There are no people, no traffic, no normal life—just an eerie silence and strange electronic invitations to “games.”
A Life Without Direction.
The story begins with Ryohei Arisu, played by Kento Yamazaki. Arisu is intelligent, but he has no clear direction in life.He is unemployed,addicted to video games and constantly been compared with his more successful younger brother.Rather than facing his problems, Arisu escapes into virtual worlds. He feels useless in ordinary society, as if he has no purpose. That is why describing him as “directionless” is so important. It is not just an insult—it explains his entire character at the beginning of the story.
Arisu’s closest friends are Karube, a bold and loyal bartender, and Chota, a nervous young man burdened by family and personal problems. Although the three friends are very different, they share a strong bond.One day, after causing chaos in the streets of Tokyo, the trio hides in a public restroom. When they came out, something impossible has happened: the city is completely empty.No crowds. No traffic. No ordinary life.Only silence.

At first, the empty city feels like a strange adventure. But that excitement disappears when Arisu and his friends receive an electronic invitation to a mysterious game.
They soon discover the rules:Players must enter dangerous games to survive.Each game is represented by a playing card.The number indicates the level of difficulty.The suit suggests the nature of the challenge.Failure means death.Survival earns a visa, allowing the player to remain alive for a limited time.The concept is simple but terrifying. There is no police force, no government and no obvious way home. The only way to stay alive is to keep playing.
The First Game: Intelligence Is Not Enough.
The opening game immediately establishes what kind of series this is. Arisu and his friends are trapped inside a building and forced to choose between different doors. One choice leads to safety, while the other leads to instant death.This is not a game that can be won through strength alone. The players must observe their surroundings, think quickly and control their fear.The first game also introduces one of the series’ central ideas: survival is not always fair. Sometimes the smartest person survives. Sometimes the luckiest person does. Sometimes someone must make a terrible sacrifice so that another person can live.Arisu’s gaming experience helps him recognize patterns, but the Borderland is not a video game. There are no extra lives, restart buttons or safe checkpoints.
The Emotional Breaking Point The early episodes are not only about solving puzzles. They also show how quickly the Borderland destroys people emotionally.Arisu, Karube and Chota enter the new world together, believing that their friendship will protect them. But the games gradually force them to confront fear, guilt and sacrifice.Their friendship becomes the emotional heart of this first season. Karube is physically confident, but he is also protective. Chota is anxious and vulnerable, yet his fear makes his situation feel painfully realistic. Arisu, meanwhile, begins to understand that his decisions can directly determine whether his friends live or die.This is where the series becomes more than a collection of violent games. It asks a difficult question:What is the value of survival if the people you love cannot survive with you?
The Mystery Behind the Games. Season 1 does not explain everything, and that is one of its greatest strengths.Who created the Borderland? Why were these players chosen? Is the Borderland another dimension, a punishment or something else? Can the survivors really return home?The series gives viewers enough information to remain interested but withholds enough answers to keep the mystery alive.By the final episodes, the players believe that collecting the numbered cards may reveal the truth. However, after surviving the most dangerous events of the season, they learn that the numbered cards are only the beginning.The appearance of new face cards changes everything.
The Ending The first season ends with Arisu and the remaining survivors believing they may finally understand the rules. Instead, they discover that the games are not over.The Borderland still has more secrets, more players and more dangerous challenges waiting for them. The ending makes it clear that their previous victories were only the first stage of a much larger mystery.It is a strong cliffhanger because it does not simply ask whether Arisu will survive. It asks whether survival alone is enough—and whether the truth about the Borderland may be more frightening than the games themselves.
For My Scrobblelife Audience. Alice in Borderland Season 1 is a sleek, heart-pounding introduction to one of the most compelling modern death-game series. Across its eight episodes, the show delivers spectacular action, intelligent puzzles, memorable characters and enough mystery to keep viewers theorising between episodes.
However, the series is more than a collection of deadly games. Beneath its stylish visuals and intense violence is a story about purpose, friendship, grief, fear and the difficult choices people make when society disappears. Arisu’s journey is especially engaging as he gradually discovers courage, responsibility and a reason to keep moving.
The games are easy to understand but difficult to predict, while the characters are constantly pushed into situations that reveal their true nature. Although some scenes may be intense for certain viewers, the violence generally serves the story rather than overshadowing it.The tightly paced episodes flow almost like one long cinematic film, making the season ideal for binge-watching. Arisu and his new allies may survive their most dangerous challenge yet, but the season finale makes one thing clear: their real struggle is only beginning.If you enjoy high-stakes survival stories with intelligence, emotion and style, Alice in Borderland Season 1 is essential viewing.
