THE INVISIBLE GUEST // CONTRATIEMPO [ENG-ESP]
The first thing I have to say is how very different the chosen title sounds in Spanish and in English. This happens often. So if you search for this movie on the net, do it with the title I wrote according to your language. Now, as for the material, I really liked it. ✔️ I don't usually watch Spanish cinema, but lately I'm giving some genres on my list to watch a chance. This movie did not disappoint, and I'll tell you why I recommend it.
Lo primero que tengo que decir es lo muy diferente que suena el título elegido en español y en inglés. Esto sucede a menudo. Así que si buscas esta película en la red, hazlo con el título que escribí según tu idioma. Ahora bien, en cuanto a el material, realmente me gustó. ✔️ No suelo ver el cine español, pero últimamente le estoy dando una oportunidad a algunos géneros en mi lista para ver. Ésta película no me defraudó, y les contaré por qué la recomiendo.

The theme is very simple. A man (Adrian Doria) wakes up in a hotel room with a lifeless body (Laura) in the bathroom 😵. This successful businessman must find a way to prove his innocence. Together with the best witness coach (Virginia Goodman), the two discuss how to make their defense, now that a new witness has emerged who could reverse Adrian's apparent innocence. At this point we know what to expect. They will seek to use some facts, to create hypotheses credible enough to be taken as the truth. However, these new acquaintances will have to trust each other in order to absolve him of what he is accused of. But if it were all so easy without departing from an idyllic framework, the film would last a few minutes, and an "El fin" would appear in Spanish. Fortunately, that is not the case.😉
La temática es muy sencilla. Un hombre (Adrian Doria) que despierta en una habitación de hotel con un cuerpo sin vida (Laura) en el baño. 😵 Éste exitoso empresario debe encontrar la forma de demostrar su inocencia. Junto con la mejor preparadora de testigos (Virginia Goodman), ambos conversan sobre cómo hacer su defensa, ahora que ha surgido un nuevo testigo quien podría revertir la aparente inocencia de Adrián. En éste punto ya sabemos qué esperar. Se buscará usar algunos hechos, crear hipótesis lo suficientemente creíbles para que se tome como la verdad. Sin embargo, éstos recién conocidos deberán confiar el uno en el otro para lograr absolverlo de lo que se le acusa. Pero si todo fuera tan fácil sin salirse de un marco idílico, la película durara unos cuantos minutos, y aparecería un "El fin" en español. Afortunadamente, ese no es el caso.😉

Here are some of the low and dark attitudes that a human being could be capable of having, which lead him to a spiral of bad decisions and end up badly 👎. The first of these is lying. It is not a taboo the fact that it is a resource used by some to supposedly avoid greater evils, to be discovered and to cover up evils. Ever since I was a child I have heard: "To cover up a lie you need a bigger lie". That expression is scary 🤥. It awakens your sense of justice and morality that warns you that it is not a good idea to lie. Whoever says it will probably have another opportunity to make matters worse: when he is about to be discovered and then gives in to fear, and shamelessly lies again, this time with greater magnitude, to cover up the first impudence. All this is shown throughout the little more than 100 minutes of the film. I assure you that on more than one occasion you will be able to purse your lips and shake your head from side to side and think, "Will he just won't stop lying?"
When someone incorrectly is hiding something, how much pressure must they feel in order for them to spew the truth? Certainly Adrian Doria and Virginia Goodman teach us a lot about that. On the one hand, Adrian himself, who has maintained a version of what happened full of holes, but which was enough to get him acquitted the first time he faced justice. Unfortunately, however, it is possible that some individual may be able to add or subtract details to his narrative to try to "sell" the most convenient version 😒. But on the other side is Virginia, who has a truckload of anecdotes. And that's why she boasts that she has never lost a case before any judge. So she is aware that if Adrian is not honest with her at the first time she will have to exert some pressure to get the truth to come out. So we will be in the middle of this psychological struggle against each other. And the peculiar thing is that we will realize what was really true only when one of the two reveals his. "Kids, don't do this at home"
Undoubtedly, this feature film shows you the false sense of being in control when you use immoral resources. In the narration you can see how one of the characters resorts to one lie after another to believe that it is still up to himself to decide the outcome of the matter. I found it funny that at one point when one of the characters fires off a flurry of lies, the listener seemed millimetrically designed to detect them all with just a spark. And many times that happens in real life. It's like getting on a bus, starting a casual conversation with the person next to you, and trying to pretend that you know a lot about the operation and characteristics of the transportation where you are going, when the person listening to you has not yet had the chance to tell you that he works in the assembly plant of that bus 🤓. There is little chance of getting out of that one unscathed 😅. That's certainly one of the false sensations of control. Now add these: can you really do something wrong with the excuse that you're doing it "for the good of your family"? Does that legalize what's illegal? Another: can you really attract good things by acting evil? One more: does it matter if you are the mastermind of the sinister plan or one of the executors? And the last one: can you build trust in yourself by lying and hiding important matters? What kind of foundations you are forming, aren't you!
"I lie all day long." You'll hear it in the opening part of the film - what effect could such a statement have on the person herself? She herself realizes such a dangerous situation, but how much time will you let pass to attend to that matter? They say that sanitation workers often lose their sense of rejection of the smell of the waste they collect within a matter of days. I think something similar must happen when someone gets used to having the nauseating presence of lies in his life. And it is unfortunate to contemplate how the character tends to do it so naturally. In the same way, the character of Tomás Garrido represents a latent reality: something happens, that whoever lies so regularly sometimes seems to have a fluorescent label on his forehead that says: "Liar".
Aquí se muestran algunas de las actitudes bajas y oscuras que podría ser capaz de tener un ser humano, que lo llevan a un espiral de malas decisiones y terminan mal 👎. La primera de ellas es la mentira. No es un tabú el hecho de que es un recurso que utilizan algunos para supuestamente evitar males mayores, ser descubiertos y encubrir males. Desde pequeño he escuchado: "Para tapar una mentira se necesita una mentira más grande". Ésa expresión da miedo 🤥. Despierta tu sentido de justicia y moralidad que te advierte de que entonces no es buena idea mentir. Quien la dice, probablemente tenga otra oportunidad de empeorar el asunto: cuando esté a punto de ser descubierto y entonces ceda ante el miedo, y sin vergüenza alguna mienta de nuevo, esta vez con mayor magnitud, para tapar la primera desfachatez. Todo esto se muestra a lo largo de los poco más de 100 minutos de película. Te aseguro que en más de una oportunidad podrás apretar los labios y menear la cabeza de un lado a otro y pensar: "¿Es que no parará de mentir?"
Cuando alguien incorrectamente está escondiendo algo, ¿cuánta presión debe sentir a fin de que pueda vomitar la verdad? Sin duda, Adrian Doria y Virginia Goodman nos enseñan mucho acerca de eso. Por un lado, el propio Adrian, que ha sostenido una versión de lo sucedido llena de agujeros, pero que le alcanzó para ser absuelto la primera vez que enfrentó la justicia. Sin embargo, lamentablemente es posible que algún individuo sea capaz de agregar o quitar detalles a su narrativa para tratar de "vender" la versión más conveniente 😒. Pero del otro lado está Virginia, que de esto tiene un camión de anécdotas. Y por eso se jacta de no haber perdido ningún caso ante ningún juez. Así que es consciente de que si Adrian no es sincero con ella a las primeras deberá ejercer cierta presión para lograr que la verdad salga a la luz. Así que estaremos en medio de esta lucha psicológica el uno contra el otro. Y lo peculiar es que nos daremos cuenta de lo que fue realmente cierto sólo cuando uno de los dos revele la suya. "Niños, no hagan esto en casa".
Sin duda, ésta largometraje te muestra la falsa sensación de tener el control cuando usas recursos inmorales. En la narración puedes ver cómo uno de los personajes recurre a una mentira tras otra para creer que sigue dependiendo de sí mismo el resultado del asunto. Me pareció gracioso que en un momento cuando uno de los personajes dispara una ráfaga de mentiras, quien lo escuchaba parecía milimétricamente diseñado para detectarlas todas con solo un chispazo. Y muchas veces sucede eso en la vida real. Es como subirte a bus, iniciar una conversación casual con quien está al lado, y tratar de aparentarle de que conoces mucho sobre el funcionamiento y características del transporte donde van, cuando el que te escucha aún no le has dado la oportunidad de decirte de que él trabaja en la ensambladora de ése bus 🤓. Hay pocas probabilidades de salir ileso de esa 😅. Esa sin duda es una de las falsas sensaciones de control. Súmela ahora éstas: ¿realmente puedes hacer algo incorrecto con la excusa de que lo haces "por el bien tu familia"? ¿Legaliza eso lo ilegal? Otra: ¿realmente se puede atraer las cosas buenas actuando con maldad? Una más: ¿importa si eres la mente maestra del plan siniestro o uno de los ejecutantes? Y la última: ¿se puede crear confianza en uno mintiendo y ocultando asuntos importantes? ¡Qué clase de fundamentos se están formando, ¿no?!
"Me paso el día mintiendo". Lo escucharás en la parte inicial de la película. ¿Qué efecto podría tener dicha afirmación en la propia persona? Ella misma se da cuenta de esa situación tan peligrosa, pero ¿cuánto tiempo dejarás pasar para atender ese asunto? Dicen que los trabajadores del aseo urbano suelen perder en cuestión de días la sensación de rechazo ante el olor de los desperdicios que recogen. Pienso que debe suceder algo parecido cuando alguien se acostumbra a tener la nauseabunda presencia de la mentira en su vida. Y es lamentable contemplar como el personaje suele hacerlo de forma tan natural. Del mismo modo, el personaje de Tomás Garrido representa una latente realidad: algo sucede, que quien miente con tanta regularidad a veces parece tener en la frente una etiqueta fluorescente que dice: "Mentiroso".

In a suspense and investigative thriller, it is to be expected that the viewer will be misled by some false hypothesis. I have seen negative reviews in this regard, arguing that the film has more twists than one would like, causing the loss of the ability to be amazed as each one of them takes place. It could be... However, I think that's what it's all about. It's a couple of people trying to put together a story with facts, assumptions and projections. They have to change with every possible version. And maybe it's a sample of what would cause the attitude of both parties, when they withhold relevant information to test if the other is as smart as they say and end up finding out for themselves, and additionally thinking that's the way to build mutual trust. So you will have several scenes and sequences in which you will have to distinguish what is the assumption and what are the facts. The characters could easily change aspects, intentions and motives, so it was an excellent decision that the sequences have summaries that place us in the consequences and differences between each story.
The performances are very credible and of a good level. Excellent note for Ana Wagener, who plays Virginia, someone very punctual, assertive and a confident presence. Her keen vision makes her detect the biggest gaps in her client's arguments with apparent ease, so much so that you don't even notice them yourself. (That last comment makes me feel bad, but hey, it's the truth). I have seen criticisms about what they think was the low level that Mario Casas (Adrian Doria) showed in that performance, compared to other more intense ones he has had. In my opinion, he is at the right level. He is not so emotional as to give the appearance of being desperate to get out of this one unscathed, and to do anything to keep his declaration of innocence 😇. At the same time he could not be so flippant and indifferent as to make him look more guilty to the audience 😈. He plays it in such a way that it's hard to read what the character really is, and that keeps you paying attention to detail, both in spoken and body language.
Top marks to the music, by Fernando Velasquez. It's amazing how the music manages to stress, with those peculiar notes of string instruments in key scenes that enhance your emotions and feelings. A predominant color palette that adds mystery to the scenes, and makes you keep an eye on when the light will finally come out.
En un thriller de suspenso e investigación es de esperar que el espectador sea engañado con alguna falsa hipótesis. He visto críticas negativas con relación a esto, argumentando de que la película tiene más giros de lo que uno quisiera, ocasionando la pérdida de la capacidad de asombro al irse dando cada uno de ellos. Pudiera ser... No obstante, creo que de eso se trata. Son un par de personas tratando de armar una historia con los hechos, suposiciones y proyecciones. Tienen que cambiar con cada versión posible. Y quizás sea una muestra de lo que ocasionaría la actitud de ambas partes, cuando ocultan información relevante para probar si el otro es tan inteligente como dice y acaba descubriéndolo por si mismo, y adicionalmente pensando que es esa la forma de crear confianza mutua. Así que tendrás varias escenas y secuencias en las que deberás de distinguir cual es la suposición y cual verdaderamente son los hechos. Los personajes fácilmente podrían cambiar de aspectos, intenciones y móviles, por lo que fue una excelente decisión el que las secuencias cuentan con resúmenes que nos ubican en las consecuencias y diferencias entre cada historia.
Las actuaciones las veo muy creíbles y de buen nivel. Excelente nota para Ana Wagener, quien interpreta a Virginia, alguien muy puntual, asertiva y presencia segura. Su afinada visión hace que detecte las lagunas más grandes en los argumentos de su cliente con aparente facilidad, tanta, que ni uno mismo se da cuenta. (Qué mal parado me deja ése ultimo comentario. Pero bueno, es la verdad). He visto críticas sobre lo que creen que fue el bajo nivel que mostró Mario Casas (Adrian Doria) en dicha interpretación, comparada con otras más intensas que ha tenido. A mi parecer, está en el justo nivel. No es tan emocional como para dar un aspecto de estar desesperado por salir ileso de ésta, y de hacer cualquier cosa con tal de conservar su declaración de inocencia 😇. A la vez que no podría mostrarse tan frívolo e indiferente que hiciera verlo más culpable ante la audiencia 😈. Lo interpreta de una forma que es difícil leer lo que realmente es el personaje, y eso hace que sigas poniendo atención a los detalles, tanto en el lenguaje hablado como en el corporal.
Nota máxima para la música, a cargo de Fernando Velásquez. Es increíble cómo la música logra estresar, con ésas notas peculiares de los instrumentos de cuerda en las escenas clave que potencian tus emociones y sentimientos. Una paleta de colores predominante que agrega misterio a las escenas, y te hace estar pendiente de cuándo por fin saldrá la luz.

Finally, one more nuance that the film encompasses. By the end of it you can get a sense of how peculiar each individual's approach to the same situation can be. That's really scary. With just a few facts, someone can try to give it cohesion and structure by filling in the gaps with feelings, assumptions, precedents, deductions? and those assumptions will be sold as absolute truth! Whereas they are just conjecture in the mind of someone who wasn't there. In practice, it is akin to "judging others", be it their thoughts, intentions and actions, something no one likes to have done to them. I sometimes hear it said in situations like this, "That's how they get anyone in trouble." And it is. The reality is that human beings who usually interact with other elements in their environment tend to give their own interpretation to facts (and non-facts too). Sometimes they get it right, but many, many, many times they don't get it right, since it is difficult to know what is really in the mind and heart of others. Some don't even know what's inside themselves. For me, this film brings out the need to seek intelligence and emotional balance in interpersonal relationships while avoiding judging others. You may be convinced of what could have happened, or why it happened, but in the end, it's probably just one's point of view, not necessarily the absolute truth. It will compound the problem when that conjecture is told to others and even more so when it is sold as the truth in the case. As I said, this is often not the case. A wake-up call about what one thinks about others. I think it is well summed up in one of the phrases of the movie poster: "Every story has two sides. The truth, only one. I believe that sometimes stories have more than two sides. Unbelievable...
Por último, un matiz más que abarca la película. Al final de ella puedes tener la sensación de lo peculiar que puede ser el enfoque que cada individuo puede darle a una misma situación. Eso realmente asusta. Con solo unos hechos, alguien puede intentar darle cohesión y estructura llenando los vacíos con sentimientos, supuestos, precedentes, deducciones... ¡y ésas suposiciones serán vendidas como la verdad absoluta! Siendo que son sólo son conjeturas en la mente de alguien que no estuvo allí. En la práctica, se parece a "juzgar a los demás", bien sea sus pensamientos, intenciones y acciones, algo que a nadie le gusta que le hagan. A veces escucho decir en situaciones como esta: "Así meten en problemas a cualquiera". Y lo es. La realidad es que el ser humano que suele interactuar con otros elementos en su entorno suele darle su propia interpretación a los hechos (y las que no son hechos también). Algunas veces se acierta, pero en muchas, muchas, muchas otras no se acierta, puesto que es difícil saber sobre lo que en verdad hay en la mente y corazón de los demás. Algunos ni saben lo que hay dentro de ellos mismos. Para mí, éste film saca a flote la necesidad de buscar inteligencia y equilibrio emocional en las relaciones interpersonales evitando juzgar a los demás. Quizás estés convencido de lo que pudo haber pasado, o por qué sucedió, pero a la final, probablemente sea solo el punto de vista de uno mismo, no necesariamente la verdad absoluta. Se agravará el problema cuando esa conjetura se comenta a otros y mucho más cuando es vendida como la verdad en el caso. Como dije, muchas veces no suele ser así. Un llamado de atención sobre lo que uno piensa sobre los demás. Creo que está bien resumido en una de las frases del poster de la película: "Toda historia tiene dos caras. La verdad, sólo una". Yo creo que a veces las historias tienen más de dos caras. Increíble...

Of course I recommend it! You will spend some time traveling between stories and plots. No unnecessary scenes of nudity or violence. Well presented scenarios. Music according to what your eyes see. And maybe, like me, you'll even add a new word to your vocabulary. Mine: "Verisimilitude".
¡Claro que la recomiendo! Pasarás un rato viajando entre historias y argumentos. Sin escenas innecesarias de desnudos ni violencia. Escenarios bien presentados. Música acorde con lo que tus ojos ven. Y quizás, como yo, hasta logres agregar una nueva palabra a tu vocabulario. La mía: "Verosimilitud"
