Haruka Sakura is a young man who grew up as an outcast because of his appearance, two-toned hair, and heterochromia. After moving to a new city, he enrolls at Funin Boys’ High School, which is known for being full of juvenile delinquents. All of this appeals to Hakura, because he loves to fight. He’s so excited that he walks the streets in his uniform a day before classes start, and suddenly finds himself caught up in a fight while defending a girl—and there he discovers that not everything at his new high school is as he thought it would be.

Hakura dreams of becoming one of the best fighters at Funin High School in order to earn respect and recognition, but he discovers that the boys use their strength and fighting skills to protect the city and its residents from other gangs and dangers.

Thus begins the journey of profound change for this anime’s protagonist. To be honest, I thought it would focus solely on the fights, and while there are obviously plenty of them, the plot goes deeper—exploring the backstories of each student and how they managed to unite the high school so that, instead of fighting among themselves, they could focus on protecting the city’s residents.

As you’d expect in an anime of this type, there are fights; each one is unique, and we get to see the characters’ different fighting styles. Within the high school, there’s an organization to maintain order, and to assign roles, there’s an absolute leader and four “Celestial Kings”—who are simply the strongest after the leader—each commanding squads with different tasks.

One of the anime’s strengths is the backstories of the characters; while it’s true that they may romanticize these rebellious youths, they also show what made it possible to organize and unite an entire school that was torn by internal strife, in addition to the characters’ personal struggles.

Behind every character lies a unique story. I must say that the one that moved me the most—aside from the protagonist’s, who goes from being a lonely young man to becoming part of something greater—is the story of Tasuku Tsubakino, one of the Four Kings, who enjoys wearing traditionally feminine clothing and has traditionally feminine tastes. Over several episodes, we see his struggle to accept himself and how he lovingly cares for an elderly widower.

As for the animation, the studio CloverWorks did a good job—it’s dynamic and emphasizes the fight scenes, effectively highlighting them; it’s colorful and fluid. The music fits the plot well, incorporating styles like rock and funk, which makes the entire fight atmosphere even more exciting.

On the other hand, this anime currently has only two seasons, and as of now, it’s unknown whether there will be a third season that adapts part or all of what remains of the manga. Personally, I’d love to see a new season of this anime—which kept me entertained from start to finish—since there are still some loose ends to tie up.

To wrap things up, Wind Breakers is an anime that introduces us to young gang members facing conflicts, and as the plot unfolds, we see how these conflicts gradually transform into second chances, bonds of brotherhood, and struggles for identity and dignity. I give it an 80/100.
