What happens when the people who are supposed to protect you are connected to the people destroying your life? That question sits underneath Shanty Town, the Netflix crime thriller set in a dangerous Lagos underworld where escaping exploitation is much harder than simply walking away.
At the centre of the story is Scar, played by Chidi Mokeme, a ruthless drug kingpin and pimp who controls Shanty Town and the women working under him. His power doesn't come only from violence but he has built a system where fear, money, secrets and desperation keep people trapped with him for as long as he wants. One of those women is Jackie, who finally manages to save enough money to escape. Her plan is straightforward. To leave Shanty Town and start over her life but her escape sets off a chain of events that exposes just how deeply Scar's criminal operation reaches.
Then there is Inem, played by Ini Edo, who returned to Shanty Town after spending time in prison. Her return is particularly interesting because prison has changed her perspective as she has had time to realize how much of her life has been shaped by circumstances, poor choices and people who took advantage of her time and life but now she has to decide on what she is willing to do differently.
There is another character of Shalewa's story which added another layer to the storyline. She got caught between Scar's demands, her own financial struggles and the possibility that someone outside Shanty Town might offer her another life but in this world, even seemingly innocent opportunities can come with a price and this is where Shanty Town becomes bigger than a story about one criminal kingpin.
Scar's operation is connected to powerful political interests, and he eventually finds himself caught between two sides with their own agendas. At the same time, an undercover team begins investigating the disappearance of women from Shanty Town and as the investigation gets closer, Scar became increasingly suspicious that someone within his circle may be working against him.
The series also touches on disturbing issues including trafficking and other organised criminal activities, giving the story a darker social dimension beyond the usual crime and gangster formula.
Chidi Mokeme is easily one of the biggest talking points of the series. Scar is violent, unpredictable and intimidating without needing to constantly shout or prove that he is dangerous. His performance gives the character a presence that makes even his quieter scenes uncomfortable to withstand. Ini Edo also gives Inem emotional depth, particularly as her character moves from someone who has accepted her circumstances to someone increasingly determined to regain control of her life.
That being said, Shanty Town isn't also perfect. Some parts of the plot rely on familiar crime-thriller patterns, and a few scenes feel predictable. The violence also became excessive at some point but I think the series works because there is always something bigger happening behind the immediate conflict. People are trying to escape. Others are trying to control them. Some are looking for money, some for revenge, and others simply want another chance at life and when those interests collide, nobody gets out untouched.
For me, Shanty Town is worth watching if you enjoy gritty crime stories with violence, betrayal, political connections, undercover investigations and characters whose loyalties keep shifting but just don't expect a simple story of good people fighting bad people because in Shanty Town, almost everyone has something to hide.
