A Quiet Place is ampli fi ed with a perfect turning gimmick. The concept comes from everyday aspects of life, so the horror becomes very effective. This film brings horror based on the concept that to survive humans have to fight not to make a sound. Any sound, as little as anything, can lead to death. Because something horrible from behind a tree will soon annex whatever is sound.
The gimmick allows the movie to have a suspension over the duration. The legendary horror film, Alfred Hitchcock once said that suspense is what happens when there's a bomb under the table, and we know it's there. We realize the bombs could explode, but he has not exploded-this is the name of the suspense. A Quiet Place basically carries bombs throughout the movie. This film conditions our mental to always be vigilant.The annex was a blind alien, a sort of combination between humans and crabs. Where did they come from? Are they aliens? Or a mutation? Or a product from a Chinese conspiracy that wants to destroy a nation like a fake egg that has made us jumpy and skotjam? The most frightening horror or thriller films are often stuck, without much ba-bi-bu. A Quiet Place is a simple, focused movie. Set-up, plot, and dialog (or in this case, sign language) are stripped to the most important. How did they initially invade? What are government and military actions? What about humans other than our main characters? We do not know, and that's not the point. The existence of these monsters is a plot mechanics to create suspens. And this movie uses it much more satisfying than It Comes at Night.
When the movie is opened, we are immediately on "Day 89". A small town in New York has become a ghost town. Abandoned buildings, rubbish everywhere, and no one inhabited the street. Until then we meet with a family who takes a wide range of necessities in a supermarket. They consist of father (John Krasinski), mother (Emily Blunt), as well as children (Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe). They already know about the existence of monsters, so they sneak and communicate with sign language.
This turned out to be a new set-up to show us that the terror is not kidding. The story actually happened about a year later. Living in a house in a cornfield, they've put together a variety of procedures to secure themselves. But the mother is now 9 months pregnant. How to try how to give birth without a voice? It also makes scrolling jump-scares from Marco Beltrami to be halal. The slightest movement and sound is a very thin boundary between life and death.
The film was directed by Krasinski, who also wrote scripts with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. This is not the first film he worked on, but here Krasinski shows his solid capability in working on suspensions. One set-piece is followed by another set-piece. The father is a man who is competent in keeping the family. He knows about many things and intends to pass on his skills to his children to be independent. There was a time when these four men would have to scatter one another, and they showed their skill in acting. The film does not make frictions between characters (commonly used in horror films) as artificial suspension builders, instead of using them as emotional weights that end up closing the film in positive shades. Yes you read right.
This film makes us emotionally involved, not only against the fate of his character but also because it is confused with the tricks of the suspense presented. I mean, I'm so excited, come to hold the sound, even very aware with the breath itself.
