  1. Film Review: A Quiet Place (2018)@drax296d

    (source: tmdb.org)

We live in truly interesting times when Michael Bay once slipped up and produced a film that not only lacks spectacular destruction or explosions but, in terms of the number of characters, limited and far from glamorous setting, and other details, resembles a low-budget student film more than a project backed by major Hollywood names and studios. The sci-fi horror A Quiet Place is also an unusual film in that it could literally be called “family-oriented,” given that the two main characters are a husband and wife, portrayed by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who are married in real life. Krasinski himself insisted on this arrangement, especially since he was also entrusted with directing, and given his involvement in writing the screenplay, it can be said that this film bears an unusually strong auteur stamp for contemporary Hollywood.

The action takes place in 2020, and the protagonists—or rather, the only characters—are members of the Abbott family, who would otherwise be an average American family were it not for the circumstances that might make them the last American family. Several months earlier, the world had become the target of an invasion by bloodthirsty and seemingly indestructible monsters that managed to wipe out almost all of humanity. The Abbotts avoided this fate because they were among the lucky ones who realised the monsters were blind, meaning that sound attracts them to human targets. Another stroke of luck is that their teenage daughter Regan (Simmonds) is deaf, so the Abbotts had long since learned to communicate using sign language, which proves immensely useful for a family striving to make as little noise as possible and thus avoid drawing attention to themselves. Although they lost their three-year-old son during an expedition, Evelyn (Blunt) and Lee (Krasinski) are expecting another child a year later, having found refuge on a farm they have adapted so that every activity produces as little noise as possible. Rebellious Regan and her younger brother Marcus (Jupe), however, struggle to cope with the monotonous life which, if they let their guard down, could be brutally and bloodily cut short.

Although Bay somehow managed to “scrape together” $17 million for the film (most likely for the special effects used to bring the monsters to life), A Quiet Place represents a triumph of near-unimaginable minimalism for Hollywood. The plot is presented with remarkable economy, devoid of superfluous subplots and complications, and A Quiet Place runs at a brisk 90 minutes. What is particularly interesting is that the film features almost no conventional dialogue, with everything conveyed through gestures and sign language, so by some—perhaps not overly lenient—criteria, this could even be classified as a silent film. On the other hand, the concept is established in an exceptionally convincing and coherent manner—the protagonists don’t speak simply because they are forced to. This, on one hand, poses an exposition problem—explaining to the audience how the world turned into such a horrific place—without, of course, being able to use the protagonists and their dialogue. Krasinski resolves this very skilfully with the opening scene in an abandoned supermarket, where apocalyptic newspaper and tabloid headlines narrate the story of the world’s end, and thanks to Lee’s character being an engineer, he is compelled to make notes on his projects, which include speculations about the monsters and their potential weaknesses.

Given its chamber-piece nature, A Quiet Place is a film carried largely by its actors, and it can be said they have delivered. Emily Blunt could eat far more complex roles for breakfast, and here she portrays Evelyn’s character without any difficulty. However, it can be said she is somewhat overshadowed by her husband, who is brilliant in the role of arguably the best husband and father one could imagine, not just under post-apocalyptic conditions but in general. Lee, whether by accident or design, bears a strong resemblance to Joel’s character from the thematically and tonally similar video game The Last of Us. Simmonds also delivers an exceptional performance, being deaf in real life; although her character is saddled with the ungrateful task of making mistakes without which no horror film, not even such a refined one, could function, she executes it in a way that, despite everything, the audience retains sympathy for Regan and hopes she will somehow survive in the end. Krasinski has also done an excellent job as director, particularly in scenes where tension is skilfully built according to all the rules of the old master Hitchcock. There is, of course, also a rather unconventional ending that is convincing and effective enough not to come across as pretentious.

Although Krasinski has inserted a few somewhat unjustified and unconvincing scenes that detract from A Quiet Place’s perfection, most of the negative criticism this film will receive will be for the wrong reasons, having far more to do with ideological debates and the heated atmosphere in a world threatened by a very different kind of apocalypse. Thus, the authors will be criticised for a lack of “diversity,” i.e., that the protagonists are a white middle-class family, that they promote supposedly outdated “gender roles,” and that they insist on “pro-life” values. What will particularly irk the usual do-gooders is that the Abbotts count firearms among their survival tools, which is enough to brand them as embodiments of “prepper” fantasies, or the equivalent of backward Trump-loving hicks who are supposedly the source of apocalypse in real life. Let us hope the world endures long enough for a time to come when A Quiet Place will be seen as nothing more than a very good sci-fi horror film.

    RATING: 8/10 (+++)

  2. Shhhh || A Quiet Place@cinetv433d

I like to think that I like quiet places. I, for one, enjoy quiet. A lot. Almost too much. Then, I came to realize that maybe I don’t like quiet as much as I thought I did. Maybe I love to remain quiet, but I enjoy listening to the noise around me. Some sign of life or something. That brings the question of just how much or how long I can go quiet without making as much as a sound if my life actually depends on it?

    A Quiet Place (2018)

A post-apocalyptic world, and there are only a few who have survived. These few are a family. Lee Abbott (John Krasinski) and Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) are a married couple who are the survivors of this apocalypse, and constantly find a way to protect their children while finding a means to fight against what hunts them. What hunts them? The world they are in is ruled by extra terrestrial beings who are blind, but because of that, or not have a heightened sense of hearing where the slightest sound or whisper is enough to cause your death. They are big. They are strong. They are everywhere, and worst of all, they hear everything.

I think watching a film based on hype is practically the worst thing you can do. Especially if you’re the observant type while watching. For this film, however, I put aside all of that and decided to see it. I’m appreciative of horror and thriller as a concept, but I almost never go out of my way to see it. I went out of my way sometime in 2020, and it was rather a fitting experience.

The premise of the movie on its own captivated me. I’m wary of post-apocalyptic films, but blind and noise-sensitive creatures was a unique concept that made me eager to unfold what lay within. The ingenious use of sign language by the family to give themselves a fighting chance against the creatures was beyond fascinating to me. The lengths the parents on their own were willing to go for the protection of their children spoke to me as well. The storyline was captivating, just as it was breathtaking.

Another thing was the masterful use of silence. Sometimes, silence scares me. It is more potent than the loudest noise, and that’s what freaks you out the most. Silence becomes so loud, you can cut it with a knife. I had to hold my breath several times due to the acute tension created by the absence of dialogue in the film. I think I grew weary of it at a point, though. The silence was nearly too much to bear, and I nearly quit seeing the film at some point. But of course, I didn’t.

Let’s talk about the performance, shall we? Nothing short of breathtaking. Emily Blunt playing the role of Krasinski’s wife, even as she is his wife in real life, was sweet. So, you just know that the chemistry in the film is real, lending a sincerity to the emotional depth of the film. Both of them outdid themselves in the interpretation of their roles, and it was truly a beautiful sight. The cinematography and themes explored transcended it from a mere horror flick.

But as expected, there are misgivings. The loop holes in plot and basic common sense that almost make this film a hard watch, The usual frustration in horror flicks because the leads make some silly decision that makes you feel like they are devoid of common sense, i.e, the decision to make and have a baby when that is literally the loudest thing you could do in a setting like this, lol.

If you’re willing to let go of a good part of your common sense, this shouldn’t be a hard film to watch. Certainly, one of the very few pieces in the horror genre that I didn’t feel bad about watching, even though I was at the edge of my seat and biting my nails almost the entire time. What are your thoughts? Have you seen the rest of the productions in the franchise?

Hello cinema fans. This time I'm going to talk to you about one of the few films of this last decade that have caught my attention, even more for mixing several of my favorite genres in a story of no more than 1 hour and a half long. A film that presents us with one of the most dangerous, dark, terrifying and desolate post-apocalyptic worlds in the history of modern cinema. Directed by and starring John Krasinski himself, this film is co-produced by the great Michael Bay, among others. Meet one of the best science fiction, suspense and horror movies that exist today and that I recommend watching.

    Plot

The film begins by showing us a small town completely desolate and silent. In what appears to be a store there are several young people, a teenage girl, a boy and a boy who communicate with sign language while their mother is looking for pills and other supplies. The youngest tries to grab a toy airplane from a high part of a shelf which then falls and quickly his older sister catches it thus preventing it from making a noise when it hits the ground. Just at that moment the father of this discreet daughter, who by the way are all barefoot, appears. He tells the child by signs that he can't take the plane with him and removes the batteries and leaves it on a shelf in full view of the others before leaving. However, on the way back, just past an abandoned bridge in the woods the family hears (except for the young girl who is deaf) the toy airplane in the child's hand and, desperately running, the father tries to reach it... but a huge creature suddenly appears and carries the child away.

    Trama

Before I give you my opinion about this great film, I want to make it clear that, although I knew about it shortly after it was released, I never had the opportunity to see it in its entirety, only in parts and on television. However, that was enough to recognize how unique this film is in capturing the viewer's attention and generating a variety of emotions and tension that very few films manage to do today. At a time when cinema was in its decline in terms of quality and originality, an actor and director chose to develop a story that has never been told before, at least not on the big screen and in such a heartbreaking way. A film that puts us at the feet of a person unable to hear or make a sound, a world plunged into silence and darkness, a family plunged into pain and fear by dangerous and extremely terrifying creatures. All this and more is what this work manages to recreate in only an hour and a half.

    hello@reallygreatsite.com_20240825_182859_0000 (1).png

Let's start talking about the story that this movie tells us and for this I want to highlight what I described above. The plot that you have just read is only the first 10 minutes of the movie. 10 minutes that serve to be the introduction and at the same time the perfect summary of what we will see next in the rest of the film. 10 minutes that are completely heartbreaking after watching them and that show us in a perfect way this dangerous and desolate post-apocalyptic world that in turn is plunged into silence. If you are a person who is uneasy about silence, this film will give you reason to completely fear it. Very few films have managed to perfectly imbibe that sense of tension, unease, fear and disturbance with few sounds and a silence that seems desolate. Now, add to this the fact that you are with your family, your older sister who is deaf, your father who seeks to protect others while trying to communicate with any survivors and a mother who is pregnant and about to give birth. All of this is what we see in this film.

Knowing now the situation and what we will see in this movie, it is normal to feel some empathy or uneasiness with this family, which are the protagonists of this story that, as you already read, began in a very heartbreaking way. Now, it is normal that the first thing anyone would ask is: how can a family live in a world where you can not make the slightest noise while overcoming a painful loss together and are about to have a baby? Well, that is what we are going to find out, as we see how they stick together and overcome every adversity. However, as we get to know each character, each strength and weakness, it's only natural that we feel completely troubled every time they face these horrible and dangerous creatures from another world. The way they internalize each other's feelings after loss and having been in uncertainty and fear for over a year now as everything becomes more and more tense is something I love about this film.

Another relevant detail that I really like is how the older sister's malfunction affects the way she sees the world. They practically put us in her role with moments of complete silence while we don't know when she is making noise and when she is not. Not far from putting a character like this in a world where it is mandatory not to make any noise in order to survive, what is more ironic is the fact that her hearing problem is the origin of the way she fights with these creatures. In order not to go into details or give any unnecessary spoilers, I'll just mention that what seems to be his greatest weakness ends up being his strength. And this is what I like, that the plot plays quite well with the details related to sound, frequencies or silence itself. Being its greatest potential the perfect use of silences and sound effects, it is also worth mentioning the way in which the characters interact and help each other while finding ways to protect themselves. But, in the end, what makes this story special is how realistic it can feel to include those heartbreaking moments of loss.

If I already like movies with post-apocalyptic worlds and invading aliens, I like it even more when you add that level of suspense and drama that generates so much tension that it even raises your heart in your throat. This way of mixing several genres in a tragic story that at the same time has many apparently calm and quiet moments is something that I love very much. And there is nothing better than watching a quiet scene where, instead of calm, you feel tension and worry about what is about to happen. This way of playing with your mind and your feelings is fascinating, although tragic at the same time for obvious reasons. But the best part of it all is having a dangerous version of a creature that is frightening and difficult to defeat. A race of aliens that, while we are not told anything in this first installment about their origin, we know they have super sensitive hearing and that makes them very dangerous.

Finally, let's talk about the technical side of this film. Starting with what made it win an Oscar (although these awards now seem to be worthless with the absurd way of valuing and rating films), the sound effects of this film is what stands out the most and has the best to offer. His way of setting the scenes with a silence full of natural and almost unpredictable sounds is something he does very well. And the best part is when, in moments of making noise, the tension completely takes over the viewer and those horrendous creatures appear out of nowhere. The sound they make is something very original as well. And speaking of these creatures, the design they have is fantastic, being a perfect use of computer effects. I also really like the camera style, fixed shots and background focus. The soundtrack, although not abundant in this film, manages to set the mood and generate emotion in those key moments. In short, this is a perfect film for lovers of suspense, post-apocalyptic worlds and silence.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in the genre of science fiction, suspense and horror.

John Krasinski surprised audiences and reaffirmed his talent as a director with this innovative masterclass in horror.

With minimal dialogue, he builds tension solely through visual and auditory storytelling.

The world created by Krasinski, in which creatures hunt for sound, is totally immersive.

Every creak of the floor takes on a shuddering importance. It locates terror in the ordinary and invites you to hold your breath.

Emily Blunt plays a mother in terrifying survival mode to perfection.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=594338)

The chemistry between Krasinski and Blunt makes for suspenseful performances based on their deep love for their children.

The sound design is Oscar-worthy and transports the audience into a sonic nightmare.

However, it is not merely shocks: it is a resonant metaphor for the responsibilities of parents protecting their children from visible or invisible threats.

By stripping away dialogue, Krasinski forces the viewer to lean in and appreciate the language of performance, of hands, eyes and gestures.

His vision will no doubt inspire future generations of horror masters.

A masterclass in setting, A Quiet Place captivated audiences around the world with its innovation.

Krasinski proved himself a master of suspense and one of the most exciting new voices in genre cinema with this gripping and unforgettable film.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=594338)

He received an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing in recognition of his innovative audio work.

Won numerous awards from the Makeup Artists and Hairdressers Guilds, Film Sound Editors and Casting Societies.

It earned over $340 million worldwide on a production budget of only $17 million, making it a huge commercial success.

It helped launch Emily Blunt as a box office force and established Krasinski as a talented new genre filmmaker.

Trying to survive, they leave their farm by following the sand road they've made to avoid making too much noise. The only salvation is to close your mouth and walk carefully, without making the mistake of breaking a certain auditory zone.

But how quiet can you really be?

After a tragic incident, Lee and Evelyn will have to reinforce their strategies to take care of their children... living under the threat of danger is not easy, especially when a big challenge is coming: a challenge of screams, cries and a lot of noise, compressed into a simple birth.

[ENG] After a long time I have once again enjoyed a film with real suspense: that suspense that makes your heart race, that makes you hate the characters and wait for the worst things to happen to them. I must say that, as A Quiet Place is a film that plays with the sound background, you can feel a lot of that terror that tries to stun us. There is a constant mental game with the viewer. The first few minutes of this audiovisual gem show us, almost instantly, the real danger faced by the protagonists. This is what got me: a certain restraint to show us the context out of the blue and, instead, slowly release the nature of those monsters with pincers and sensitive ears.

The monsters in A Quiet Place are hard to defeat. Being very sensitive to sound, how do you kill them? One wrong step and you'll have them surrounding you, a whole flock of them. Now, the creatures themselves only lurk but.... Who makes the sounds? Here is the great premise of this film: a human conflict, a need for guilt and liberation. A need to recover what was lost in the most dangerous way possible, in a world where noises are the real threat.

[ENG] Lee and Evelyn are a couple who, despite adversity and tragedy, live together in guilty silence for the welfare of their children. On one side, there is Regan (Millicent Simmonds) a deaf-mute child struggling with the bitter memory of loss. Marcus (Noah Jupe) is a scarier child: more reserved. They are all united by the desire to go on living, especially on the eve of the baby in Evelyn's womb: this is the great conflict. Any birth is noisy wherever you look... any newborn is unable to control its cries.

What do you think will happen? Imagine the worst, and the worst is something that keeps this film alive. The feature won't stop bombarding you with a series of alarming events: your anxiety will rise as you watch the Abbotts navigate the most unfortunate situations.

[ENG] John Krasinski produces, directs, writes and acts in this film. I've never seen anything directed by him before, and I think it's the first story, post-The Office, that I'm giving my full attention to. His lead partner is Emily Blunt, who is also his wife in real life. Maybe that's why there's more chemistry between the two, and okay, this adds a pretty good dramatic touch to the feature. A Quiet Place has two parts in total, both very good, although I still prefer the first one. There are not so many characters on the scene: at the beginning everything is focused on the Abbott family and then the story expands further, giving us a flashback to the origin of the creatures.

Both parts are full of tragedy. The muted atmosphere lends a certain nostalgic quality to the story. The characters live making mistakes that put them in danger: you will sigh at their idiocies; the idiocies are more dangerous than the monsters in the film themselves.

[ENG] If you like psychological thrillers, A Quiet Place is for you. Without a doubt, I must say that this film exceeded my expectations; it is a cinematographic work worth enjoying, especially because of the silent characteristic that surrounds it. Survival, horror and drama: all embodied in the skin of John Krasinski and Emily Blunt.

P.S: I think I'll send some scandalous neighbors to the universe of A Quiet Place: the monsters that live there will love it.

Hi everyone, just watched the movie A Quiet Place from 2018. My brother recommended it to me, he said if you want to see a good horror movie then check it out. And it was right, I thought it was good.😃

The film is directed by John Krasinski who also plays Lee and is about a family trying to survive by living in silence as monsters with supernatural abilities hunt anything that makes a sound in a post-apocalyptic world. So if you like horror and post-apocalyptic style, it is recommended to watch with its exciting action, unique concept with silence as a means of action and intense atmosphere. Also good acting performances and the film is good at keeping you engaged throughout the story, and I would give it a strong 8.

    Here is a trailer.😃

  7. Whispers of Apocalypse: A Quiet Place Review@olujay947d

Five years down the line, and this film lives rent-free in my mind as one of the most thrilling and truly entertaining films I have watched. Three years later, in 2021, the producers would go on to release a sequel that would do very well for itself, regardless of the bar the first film had set.

Copy of Extraction Film Review Poster_20231125_005040_0000.jpg

In the same year as the release of the first film, A Quiet Place I, Birdbox was released. I draw parallels between both of them as they both share similar concepts regarding a forced deprivation of human senses due to an apocalyse that threatened the continuity of the human race. Both films, although vastly different in storylines, trended in that year for the aforementioned reason.

When an asteroid crashes on Earth, there is an invasion of sightless extraterrestial creatures that have hyper-sensitive hearing and indestructible armoured skin. They begin attacking anything that makes any sound and then annihilate most of the human and animal populations.

The Abbott family finds a place far away from town to live in absolute silence. Fortunately for them, they had already learned sign language for their deaf daughter. Sign language became their new form of communication.

The family experiences grief in their bid to survive, and then they go on to live and stay off the radar of the aliens. Faced with challenges in going about their everyday lives and life-threatening situations, they navigate their lives to survive.

    image.png

Apocalypse films need to have peculiar storylines to be truly enjoyed. If an idea or concept has been used before and isn't then built upon for something interestingly unique, it is likely to not deliver. And since I had never heard of such a story before about not being able to make sound or risk being killed by aliens, the trailer for the film piqued my interest.

Like most films of this genre, A Quiet Place starts like the regular "normal day, and then something extraordinary happens." It was all sudden when the real thrills started. One would think it would be about fighting the monsters in the film, but there was more depth to it than just that.

The story, intriguingly woven together, portrays certain elements that keep one invested in the film as it continues. The definition of survival is expounded profoundly in this film. Despite having a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes, it felt as though I had spent hours and hours watching the film. It was that deep and thrilling for me.

For most of the film, I was kept on edge, wondering just what would happen next and how the main characters would survive. I would often sympathise with their experiences with hardship doing regular things, so much so that I got attached to certain characters, and their fate in the film mattered to me.

    image.png

Films with such fascinating storylines tend to maintain good energy through most of the film, but some of them crash land with terrible endings. The ending given to this film made me appreciate its writers even more. I am not sure that there could have been any better way to provide a beginning closure that was even apt enough to serve as the beginning of a sequel.

The film focuses on the family as the main and only characters. What that implies is that there was much focus on each one of them throughout the film. Any underperformance by the actors would steer the film in the wrong direction. The actors in this film, however, were just superb at their jobs.

It's the duty of film actors to bring the film to life and paint the best picture of the film for the audience. And to me, the actors in A Quiet Place deserve awards for their incredible performances.

For anyone looking for something worthwhile to pass time with and yet be truly entertained with thrills and intrigues, they might consider this film. As much as it has been many years since its release, when I watched it, I would watch it at any time and still be entertained.

I give this film a rating of 9/10.

  8. A Fine Horror For The Weekend—Review Of A Quiet Place (2018)@kemmyb974d

    IMG_20231028_172209.jpgSource, Fair Use

It's that time of the year when horror films are more frequently watched. I don't mind them at any other time but this particular horror/drama has been lingering on my PC for so long. So I made it my weekend watch. What's more, I love Emily Blunt and she acts alongside her real-life husband, John Krasinski, in this one!

I'm not surprised at the high positive ratings and reviews by critics because these actors are just too good. Every scene is purposeful and compelling. It's labelled a horror but it doesn't seem so to me after watching. True, there are some jump scares, but the tension and suspenseful scenes are more. I'll say it's a mild horror that anyone can watch.

A Quiet Place (2018) is an American horror/drama in a post-apocalyptic setting about a family who struggle to survive in a world inhabited by gruesome creatures extremely sensitive to sound. As you would guess, these creatures kill anyone who makes the slightest noise. So it's a world of silence for the father (played by John Krasinski), mother (played by Emily Blunt) and their three children.

    https://youtu.be/WR7cc5t7tv8?si=C-ut077LFJcoQKhKSource: YouTube

The opening scene reveals this family in a deserted pharmacy. The mother picks a prescription bottle, takes out a tablet and gives it to her eldest son who is sick. Her eldest daughter, a teenage deaf girl is with the youngest boy when the boy picks a plane toy. The father sees the toy and hurriedly takes it and removes the battery. The boy is unhappy.

As the family leave the pharmacy and begins to walk in the deserted town, father and mother are shocked when the boy turns on the plane toy, attracting one of the creatures. The father runs to save his son but the creature snatches the boy away and the family breaks down in tears.

Over a year later, the mother is shown to be pregnant. How will this family survive in this silent world, terrorised by alien creatures? Will they ever discover the weak point of the creatures?

    Review

If there's a film that immerses its audience in a most tense situation as horror unfolds before their eyes, it's this post-apocalyptic horror. The plot is brilliant and after seeing it, I wonder how the writers came up with this idea. Imagine a world inhabited by blind alien creatures that respond to the slightest sound and everyone is forced to live in silence. I doubt 80% of the human population would survive but these actors convince us that it's possible. Though it comes with hard costs such as living like a hermit and learning some survival skills.

Krasinski did great in directing this horror. The storytelling is clever and subtle. Minute details are revealed in scenes giving viewers an idea of what to expect. For example, in a scene, a nail is shown protruding out of a stair and the pregnant mother who is in labour is shown moving around. Our heart races as we know she'll step on the nail soon and either scream, drawing the creature's attention or miraculously stay quiet.

    IMG_20231028_172444.jpg

    IMG_20231028_172539.jpg
Though the dialogues are few, the acting is superb. The cast perfectly embodies their characters and puts their hearts into the roles. We feel their fears and tears. Emily Blunt was simply fantastic, especially in the scene where she went into labour and stepped on the nail. The way she struggled to hold in her pain and screams while the creature growled close by, searching for her should be applauded.

The cinematography, editing and transitions are excellent. I believe great care went into the production of this film. Krasinski perfectly balanced the scares with emotional stakes, portraying the love of family and the need for survival.

Overall, this ninety-minute post-apocalyptic horror is a thrilling ride, suspenseful, unpredictable and races hearts. If you want a fine horror for a weekend watch, I recommend A Quiet Place. I'll give it 4 stars out of 5. It has a sequel and I hope to watch and review it next.

  9. Quiet Place I (2018) || Movie Review.@esther-emmanuel1021d

    IMG_20230911_155112.jpg

This movie has been on my list of movies to be watched before the end of this year. If you love watching movies, you must have this kind of list or some sort of watchlist stacked with movies you want to watch. Now, we all know this kind of list doesn't have an end. Just like the list book lovers have too. It's the same thing. I have read many reviews about this movie here on this platform and a lot of people have recommended it to me. So, over the weekend I decided, it was time to watch it, haha.

When I first started watching this movie, I thought I streamed the wrong copy because I heard nothing, no dialogues, no sound except for a family communicating through Sign language and also there were no subtitles to know what they were actually saying. I said to myself, "there we go again! Why me?" I almost gave up on watching it but I stayed because of Emily Blunt. I was eager to see her performance in this movie and plus, it's been so long since I have seen her movies. I like her a lot and she is one of my favorite actresses. I watched this movie with so much concentration because I was trying to understand their dialogues and at the same time enjoy the movie. It was stressful.

'A Quiet Place' is an intense post-apocalyptic science fiction horror movie that was distributed by Paramount Pictures. It was directed by John Krasinski and written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and Krasinski too. The story of the film centers around a small family trying to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic world that is inhabited by blind alien creatures that hear sounds acutely not matter the distance. It starred Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat. If anyone had interrupted me while watching it I would have snapped at the person.

    Brief Synopsis.

    IMG_20230911_171251.jpg

    IMG_20230911_171322.jpg

The Abbot family, a family of five, live in the middle of a forest in New York as most of the human population have been killed by a blind alien-like creatures that I think see through the vibration of noise or any kind of sound. They survived by doing their activities quietly, communicating with sign language, walking barefoot on soft sand that had been laid by their father (Lee). Needing supplies for their upkeep, they went to a nearby town's store to get their supplies. While they are there, their youngest child Beau, finds a toy that he was eager to take home but Lee takes away the toy and quietly explains why he couldn't have the toy.

    IMG_20230911_171546.jpg

    IMG_20230911_171620.jpg

Unfortunately, as they were all leaving the store to go back home, Regan, their deaf daughter secretly gives him back the toy, but without its batteries. This scene was actually predictable because immediately I knew Beau would take the batteries along and he would be the one to end his family. However, that was not the case, because Beau gets killed by one of the creatures and I was like okay bye no more trouble. The scene was intense to watch because I was like why is it always the children to cause trouble?

    IMG_20230911_171752.jpg

    IMG_20230911_180729.jpg

    IMG_20230911_171832.jpg

Fastwarded to a year later, The Abbot's family life went back to normal after the loss of their child. Now, Lee's wife, Evelyn (Emily) is heavily pregnant and the family are preparing for the coming of the newborn by creating a soundproof room, getting more supplies and all. Lee goes fishing with Marcus, their son. Regan pleads to go instead of Marcus but Lee says no. Angry, she storms back to the house, takes her backpack and leaves for Beau's grave. Not long after, Evelyn went into labor, in pain she accidentally smashed a photo frame when stepping on a nail which attracted a creature. Will she survive? How will she give birth to the child without a sound?

    My Review And Rating.

I enjoyed watching this movie a lot. It was intense, gave me anxiety and at the same time it was gripping. This movie explored a whole new level of the horror genre. A fantastic concept from the writer. This movie made me realize how silence can be golden hahah, if you are a noise maker, you would last a day in this kind of world. I hate noise, I don't thrive well in a noisy environment hence why I might just survive in this kind of world. I will just say this, this movie gave me a nerve-wracking experience from the start to finish.

Some of the things I love about this movie is that it explores a lot. Like the base concept of this movie which is survival by silence, minimalistic settings, little dialogues, sound design, strong performances by the cast, creature designs and the themes. These are the things that I find spectacular about this movie.

The director did a fantastic job of putting this film together in a gripping and intense way. If you have serious anxiety, I would advise that you don't watch this movie. The scene arrangements were fantastic and I love the fact that we were kept in suspense of how everything started. It is part of the reason I stayed until the end of the movie. I was so curious about how the creature came to earth and how it all started.

I love how the storyline was told with minimal dialogues and still exploring themes like survival instinct, family bond, fear, grief, loss, parental sacrifice and above communication skills. The Cast were exceptional with their performances. They all acted in a convincing manner, like they were actually living the life for real. It was real. John Krasinski was amazing, he acted as a father who is smart, intelligent, creative and innovative. He was brave and made sure his family survived no matter what. He was indeed the leader of the family. If it were another man, that family wouldn't survive.

Emily Blunt was amazing as usual. She has never disappointed me. I loved her performance. She acted as a strong, smart, and courageous woman. Her acting was very convincing that I felt her pain, and struggle throughout the childbirth scene. Those scenes were suspenseful and intense!

The cinematography of this movie was good. The visuals were done well. The creature reveal was amazing and gripping. The camera work was fantastic because it concentrated on everything details of the characters, the settings, and the creature.

Rating this movie, I will give 8.5 out 10 stars. I enjoyed it, I liked it, it was realistic and it was entertaining. It was nice to see Emily Blunt do her thing again. If you haven't watched this movie yet like me, I suggest you go watch it soon. If you have seen it, how was your experience?

  10. [ESP/ENG] A Quiet Place (2018) - Review: “Una Pelicula De Suspenso Bastante Original”@miguelalfonso1096d

Hello hive, today I want to talk to you about a movie that I wanted to see for a long time and there were several things that call me much attention and seemed interesting, yesterday finally after so long I could see it and for that reason is that today I come to talk about A Quiet Place.

A Quiet Place is an American thriller movie released in 2018, directed by John Krasinski and starring Krasinski himself and his wife Emily Blunt. The film shows us a "post apocalyptic" place where you can't make noise as monsters will come after you, a simple premise but quite compelling in my opinion, but now if after having given a little context let's get started.

First I always like to start talking about what I loved most about the film and in this case it is certainly with the seriousness that the film takes the premise, from the first moment we see the children to be as cautious as possible and although we do not know why with the little that we are shown we deduce what happens, until finally everything is clear to us.

Linked to the previous point, something that also called my attention is that they did not use the typical resource of putting a newscast explaining what had happened and why they are in this situation, in this film this preamble is unnecessary, it simply does not matter, the really important thing is to survive, they are small details that make us go deeper into the story and adds enough suspense which is also positive.

    imagen

The acting of John Krasinski and Emely Blunt are spectacular, how they manage to convey the feelings, frustration and fear that haunts them every day, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are not far behind either, the acting in this film is essential because most of the time the characters do not have her "voice" as a means of communication and have to find other ways to express themselves, but I'm happy to say that this cast is 10/10.

The phrases or words we hear in the film are quite limited, this is a key point for the experience of the film and it is that details like these make us feel like another character, that's why in the beginning I said that I liked the seriousness with which this film took its premise, as this is maintained from beginning to end.

    imagen

As for the story I don't feel there is much to say, not much is explained or we only see scenarios of how this family tries to stay safe in a world like this, we can also see how small mistakes add up until everything gets out of control, the film shows us only two or three days in the life of this family and we can see how everything that can go wrong, indeed goes wrong.

For me the best part of the movie is the second half, because at the beginning we are getting to know the characters and we are empathizing with them, but the real substance comes in the second half, when the action and suspense keeps us glued to the screen in expectation of "what will happen?" And although the ending is a little sad I admit that I liked it a lot.

    imagen

Now I want to add a plus and if you plan to see this movie I recommend watching it with headphones or a good sound system, because it is really worth it and greatly enhances the experience, I saw it with headphones and I could immerse myself much more in each scene, for this specific movie I recommend it.

In conclusion it met my expectations perfectly, it surprised me from beginning to end, I had already read reviews that it was a good movie so I was almost sure, but it really caught me, I enjoyed it and I loved it, for those who read for a while you know that many of my favorite movies are suspense and certainly this one is not far behind.

This movie is a Horror Thriller that was released in the year 2018, Directed by John Krasinski who in turn is part of the cast of actors and actresses along with Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe.

A Silent Place is not the typical horror movie where we will see supernatural horrors that will torment the family, in this movie we will find terrifying beings that are completely real and that are almost impossible to kill; They do not show us the origin of these monsters, but they can easily pass as aliens, they are completely blind, but with extraordinary hearing senses capable of hearing the slightest noise thousands of kilometers away and this leads us to the main plot of the film.

Its plot is simple but strong, which maintains a tension from the beginning to the end; Silence is the key in this film and it starts off being quite uncomfortable, but it gradually conveys to you all the tension that the Abbott family feels while looking for supplies or when the boys play without making a minimum noise. Each one of them lives in complete tension and taking care of down to the smallest detail so as not to make any mistake that could be fatal.

It has a fair action that does not overshadow the suspense that this type of film has to transmit, I would have liked them to investigate a little more about why these beings came to planet earth, but I suppose that this is just a mouth opener of what can happen in the second film that I have not yet seen.

The characters connect with you the moment they go on stage, the chemistry between the 2 parents is incredible and I suppose the fact that both John and Emily are a couple in real life has a lot to do with it; The boys play a pretty good role, although the girl gets desperate on some occasions. They are good characters and their performances are so good that they convey to you each of the feelings that they feel in each part of the film.

I had A Quiet Place in my sights since I first saw its trailer in a theater a couple of years ago, the idea of creating a film with such an innovative premise where the ability of its own protagonists to speak was limited. (Or generating any noise) just seemed brilliant to me, it was a way of defying the parameters of the cinematographic format and could result in a very interesting product.

    fid18178_trid16255.jpg Source

John Krasinski (who simultaneously acts as director and plays one of the leading roles) immerses us in a rather particular post-apocalyptic world, plagued by blind and destructive creatures that have a very sensitive ear and will not hesitate to exterminate what they perceive in their vicinity. surroundings. This is the ideal starting point for a devastating story where we will follow a family trying to survive, where both the presence of noise and its absence can make the difference between life and death.

A Quiet Place stands on two pillars of equal importance: Perfect sound design that keeps us on the edge of our seats at all times, and a terrific set of performances that sell every moment perfectly.

Apart from the aforementioned Krasinski we have his wife (both in real life and in fiction) Emily Blunt, the Abbott children played by Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and Cade Woodward. Considering the obvious absence of dialogue in most of the footage, it's quite impressive that all of the emotions and motivations of the cast of characters in A Quiet Place are realized through American Sign Language, facial expressions, and raw cinematography.

    1366_2000.jpeg Source

Although it is obviously a thriller and horror film with hints of science fiction, A Quiet Place is a work that deserves the appreciation of basically any film lover, taking into consideration its intelligent use of all the elements that make up the seventh art.

It is a technically neat film, but also quite capable of delivering emotional moments, it makes us fall in love with its characters, lets us understand their desires and fears, and allows us to suffer with them every second of tension.

    Separador.png

  13. A Quiet Place (2018)@minhajulmredol1509d

A quiet place, the name itself gives us a hint of silence. When the movie starts and the very first portion gives us the whole idea about the movie, I mean one can predict the whole thing, whole survival. In a family of five, using sign language to communicate with one another, every step of them is calculated and movement is so careful that they don't create any noise, they are afraid of making a noise. Their little companion picks a toy which is an aeroplane but they can't have it with them as it would create noise. His elder sister secretly lets him have it but she removes the batteries. But while leaving he picks those batteries secretly.

They move through the forest and coming near a bridge he turns on that aeroplane which starts playing music, everyone gets shocked and terrified, by the time his dad could reach him a creature from the jungle grabbed the boy and vanished. That's the start of the movie, that's the whole story about, their survival without making a noise because some creatures are hunting noise.

IMG_20220512_141237.jpg This photo was taken while watching the film.

So A Quiet Place is a horror-thriller film which was directed by John Krasinski in 2018. I have seen people watching and writing about it plenty of times. I have also thought of watching it multiple times but somehow it got postponed. So last time, I made up my mind and went for it. And guess what, It was a good one to go.

As you can guess from the beginning the story is about survival, it didn't focus on how this thing happened, just featuring the post-apocalyptic survival story of the family. I thought this would be the only movie where I won't hear a voice, things were like that but somehow there were ways, always a bypass system to crack even the strictest rules. Ops! I am getting away.

After the beginning, the story was forwarded to almost a year and a half and the mother from that family was pregnant and her date was near. Actually, they kinda try to live with that, trying to lead a normal life while coping with the situation. This family has a teenage boy and a girl, whose father takes him to teach the ways of living so that he can look after them in their old age. Some intense moments would make someone bite their nails or make the hell out of them being shocked. In that scene when she gets her labor pain was intense as the husband and son were out, even the daughter wasn't at home, and a creature roaming inside.

I was wondering as they have a shotgun so they can shoot the creature when they had no options left to survive, you would also feel this even for a moment. But what would happen if they pulled the trigger of the gun? Well, there is a scene to satisfy this feeling and the impact was visible too.

If you ask for my overall impression I would say a good one, you won't get bored, the runtime is just one hour and thirty minutes, not a huge one even if it was a long one, you wouldn't have got bored. The story progressed in such an intense way that I just started and got drowned in it, with no break, no distraction. From this amazing experience from the first one, I am looking forward to watching the second one too. So the next one on my watchlist would be A Quiet Place Part Two. Happy Watching!

  14. A Quiet Place review - it felt like a disaster!@unbiasedwriter1782d

I have read a lot about A Quiet Place and I have also seen the trailer and had it on my to-watch list for a long time. Then as I met some friends a few weeks ago, some of them told me that they had seen A Quiet Place 2 in the cinema and that it was absolutely worth watching. As a result, I decided to step up and finally watch the first movie, followed by the second movie.

I just discovered it a few days after I had watched both movies, that they can actually be streamed for free on Paramount+ in the USA (if you have a subscription costing $6 per month), but I only discovered that after paying to rent the movie in the Google Play Store, so I kind of wasted $10 in renting fees... but that shouldn't mean the end of the world (luckily).

    a quiet place.jpg

So, I had read about A Quiet Place, and I even got my wife interested, so we decided to watch the movie(s) together.

A Quiet Place - what is it about?

The movie takes us directly into a store. It is all quiet, and a family is picking products off the shelves, without making any sounds. A little boy tries to take a little plane from the shelf, but by accident, it falls down. Luckily, the big sister picks it up before it hits the ground. The father gets angry and takes the plane and the batteries. They leave it all in the store and decides to walk away. The big sister gives the plane to the boy later (in secret), and the boy takes the batteries (in secret). As they walk home, the boy puts the batteries in the plane, it makes a noise - and everyone suddenly understands that this will cause trouble. A big, wild alien/animal jumps out of the forest and kills the boy.

That is what the movie is about, a world in which everyone makes noises is devoured by some special alien-animal.

    john.jpg

What can they do about this? They have to keep quiet. But, is there a way to actually fight these alien-animals?

    This is just lacking logic

The movie is quiet... Some might find this special and interesting, but it was almost boring to me. It is also annoying that they expect us to understand the finger language, because I didn't, and it felt like I was missing quite a lot of the conversations because of that.

But, the logical errors are the ones that really annoyed me in this movie. First of all...

    • If you get attacked whenever you make a noise, how do the aliens know the difference between a noise made by wind and any other noise? Why do the animals only attack animals a few times as they make noises, but not always?
    • When the boy is killed by an alien in the start, the alien seems satisfied and leaves (even though the father is only a few meters away). Later in the movie, the aliens keep attacking and never leave the area, even though they have already captured the one who made the noise. This is annoying!

These are just some of the annoying things taking place in the movie. And to be honest, these and the other logical errors were so annoying to me that I felt like falling asleep or getting a high blood pressure attack while watching it. My wife almost fell asleep!

What about the second movie? I will write more about it in another article!

I like John Krasinski, but that doesn't help!

The thing is, I like John Krasinski. I love him in the role of Jack Ryan in the Amazon original series, and I have also enjoyed him in many of his other roles. He is the director of this movie, and there are for sure beauties to it all... but still, this just became a mess and boring to me. I'd much rather watch a season of Jack Ryan than to watch A Quiet Place 1&2 once again.

Have you seen A Quiet Place? How did you like the movie(s)? I would love to hear your thoughts!

    OPINION

Being a 2018 movie, I bet many people have seen it, it is known (at least I think so) by many for its interesting world and history, but it was not until yesterday that I was able to see it and I cannot say anything else other than I falling in love of this movie and the world that they give us. Reading through various pages, I learned that A quite place already has a sequel, a sequel that few have seen and will not be available to everyone until September of this year.

At the beginning of the film they show us a bit of what is going on, the people avoiding making noise, the few dialogues, the stress that is felt in the air of the scene. Most of the film that was what I felt, stress, fear, worry, it is a film that from the beginning to the end made me feel something and it is a great success since it lasts an hour and a half, being so short but encompassing everything, it uses every minute of the film to imply something, to make assumptions, to impress and exalt us.

The more I read about the film, the more I wondered how it was possible that I had not seen it before, the film was made with only 16 million dollars and raised more than 330 million dollars, being a resounding success, having an approval of 97% of the public. The director of this film is John Krasinski, starting in the entertainment world as Jim in The Office, he made his way as a screenwriter, producer and director, he already has several projects done, films that he has starred in and others, showing that the actors who make comedy they can't just get stuck in that genre.

The movie is a marvel, in just an hour and a half it has a great story, it will be available on Netflix until next month in south america, so if you have not seen it, it is your time to do it and be prepared for A quiet place part II that will be within everyone's reach in September of this year.

  16. A Quiet Place: A 10/10 movie [ENG/ESP]@fabian981852d

    Creative Portfolio.png

Best regards to all... As the second part of A Quiet Place is being released, I wanted to review the first installment so that those of you who haven't seen it can know what it's all about, as the second part picks up directly where the previous one ended.

First, this cinematic gem was directed by John Krasinski who also stars in the same film as Lee Abbott and features Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott, Lee's wife and mother of his four children.

The film was released in 2018 and was a success it was named as one of the best films of 2018, managing to collect many film awards. It also grossed worldwide more than $340 million.

A place in silence is a super special movie, as it awakens various emotions when watching among which highlights anxiety, fear pain, and despair, it is a film with constant suspense as they do not explain much from the beginning what happened and as it begins in silence you can despair of not hearing anything, in fact, the first time I saw it I thought I had damaged my PC.

    The plot

A place in silence begins in a post-apocalyptic world, where you can see that there are no people in the cities as they have been completely deserted, suddenly enter the scene the Abbott family of 5 members, they are in a store looking for supplies but everything is done in absolute silence, even the footsteps cover them with sand so you do not hear anything.

The youngest child, Beau Abbott, takes a toy space shuttle but it is quickly taken away by his father and through sign language, he tells him that it is too noisy and dangerous. But when they leave the store the oldest daughter who is deaf and mute gives it back to him, but while they are on the way home little Beau puts the batteries in the toy that turns on making a lot of noise, then we see how Lee the father, is very distressed and begins to run to his son and sees towards the forest and notices that a creature that manages to reach and kill Beau is approaching at full speed.

    quietrun-7835359641.gif

A long time later the family finds themselves leading a normal life but they are still not making any noise, the mother Evelyn is pregnant and the father is still focused on the welfare of his family, but he blames himself for not having saved his son that's why the family always looks dull or without much joy.

But everything starts to turn upside down after Lee goes out with his son to forage for food in a nearby river, Evelyn stays with the older girl while she does chores around the house. When Lee is at a waterfall with her son she starts talking to him as she has discovered that the sound of the waterfall masks any sound they might make so they shout and start talking a lot of things.

    tumblr_p6qc2064t31x0uneyo2_640.gif

While lee is with his son, Evelyn is seen in a basement dragging a sack of laundry and while carrying it up a ladder she doesn't realize she has picked up a nail, so when she goes back down to the basement she nails it in her foot making a slight noise as some picture frames fall, and immediately a creature is seen entering the house attracted by the sound. Also, having had that accident Evelyn's time to give birth is accelerated and the labor begins, her husband knowing that this occasion will occur much noise has prepared a series of fireworks to hide the cries of childbirth.

While all this is happening Lee with her son, when they are on their way home they meet a very old man whose wife was killed by a creature, so very hurt he starts to scream and the creature kills him too, Lee takes her son so that he does not see anything and they run to the house, then they realize that Evelyn has activated some red lights that indicate that she is in labor.

So the boy runs inside the house with the mother who asks him to activate the fireworks, but the father goes out to look for his daughter Regan who is in the grave that was made for Beau in the place where he died.

Regan seeing the fireworks realizes something is wrong so she decides to rush back to the house, on the way she meets her father who tells her signals her to run hide, so she with her brother hide on top of a barn but the creatures quickly climb up and start attacking them to kill them, but after falling inside the barn Regan realizes that the creatures are very sensitive to high-frequency sounds.

After Regan and Marcus cried to escape alive from the barn attack, they meet their father but the creature comes back seriously injuring Lee, so his sons quickly get into a van to avoid the creature attack, lee gets up from the ground and sacrifices himself for his sons to escape and get into the house, so after saying goodbye to his sons he screams very loud so the creature attacks him and his sons escape.

Back in the house, the children meet with their mother and tell her everything that just happened, but a creature also enters so Regan remembers the damage that high frequencies do to it so he brings his hearing device close to an amplifying microphone and makes the creature disoriented and discovering its soft parts, then Evelyn takes advantage of the creature's moment of weakness and shoots it and kills it.

    a-quiet-place-running-monstergif.gif

Then they all watch the CCTV monitors and realize many creatures come running into the house attracted by the loud sound of the gunshot, so knowing the creature's weakness, they turn up the volume on the amps even more and Evelyn reloads the shotgun getting ready to kill the creatures.

    What I liked

Without a doubt, the entire film is excellently crafted. From the characters, the situations, and the alien creatures. For example, the characters played their roles very well, the sign language they used was that of the United States and they did it very fluently. The performances of the characters in the moments of tension were very well worked, so much so that when I was watching it I felt that same tension.

The alien creatures are something that I had never seen before, yes they have a similar shape to the zombies in the video game prototype, but these aliens are made originally.

The strength of the alien is its hard armor that even repels bullets, so they imply that even the army could not prevent the massacre, the creatures are blind but have a very developed and acute sense of hearing which makes them sensitive to the slightest noise even miles away. They also have powerful claws that can cut or crush in a deadly way.

One last thing I loved about A Quiet Place was the ending, it was perfect and leaves you wanting to see the second part.

    What I didn't like.

What I didn't like were the gaps or inconsistencies in the story. Like if there were attacks everywhere or did they fall in one spot, how long before the human race reached the brink of extinction, if Lee had built a chamber where they could talk why didn't the whole family go in there and talk normally why did they decide to have a baby if after it was born it would make a lot of noise? and even though in the movie you see that they keep it asleep with sedatives what will they do when they run out of them? Did the army try to do something?

Of course, I know that these are questions that can be answered in the second installment since the second part also acts as a prequel, telling the beginning of everything from the moment the aliens fell on earth, so we'll have to wait and see.

    Conclusion

A Place in Silence is quite a masterpiece as it is a thriller and horror movie but it is a horror that you can love. A very well developed plot and a solid story with good plots, it is necessary to see both movies to understand the story and although we are at the end of the second part, and although it is not known if there will be a third installment there have been rumors that they are writing scripts to make a spin-off.

I have read a review with many spoilers about the second installment, and although I will not tell anything I will say that the second part is the connection of the whole story.

*Thank you very much for reading this review about A Silent Place, I hope you liked it and if so tell me in the comments what you like the most about this film. I want to remind you that none of the images I have used here are my property, all of them were taken from the internet and that's why I put the links numbered.

    68747470733a2f2f73332e616d617a6f6e6177732e636f6d2f776174747061642d6d656469612d736572766963652f53746f7279496d6167652f79516576644c57434547786247413d3d2d3730303938383231342e31353837613733626637313134373035353337383337373.gif

  17. A Quiet Place (my review/reaction) [WARNING: May contain VERY minor spoilers]@tegoshei2142d

*Recently, on the nights when I don't plot any classes, I watch some movies with my parents. It's like a time to bond, although there are some movies that we can't watch together and that is horror/thriller. I am a sucker for horror and thrillers, but my mama hates them. Good thing though, my papa also enjoys it. What we do is, papa and I watch a horror/thriller film first after he closes the store at around 9:30 in the evening. That time, mama is busy computing and budgeting stuff from the store and also daily expenses. Then after the first movie, we watch another movie of any genre except horror/thriller until past midnight.*
So in this post, I'm going to give my review/opinion on a horror/thriller film called ***"A QUIET PLACE"***.
    ![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tegoshei/abLzN77X-image.png) [IMAGE SOURCE](https://sfsnetflixparty3.peatix.com/)
The movie started with a family of five trying to get some stuff from some abandoned pharmacy or store. They were collecting some medicines and other necessities they need at home. And while doing so, no one in the family was making any noise. Until the youngest son, perhaps around 3-4 years old, took an airplane toy which is battery operated to produce some sound. Hurriedly, the father took the toy from him, detached the battery and warned him not to make a sound while being freakingly careful and observant of their surroundings. When nothing happened, they all tried to head home; barefoot and following a trail of something like sand to refrain from making a sound.
*"Okay..."*, I thought, *"This is going to be a very silent movie as suggested by the title."* However, when the family was on their way home, the youngest child actually took the plane and the batteries with him. And while they were about to cross the bridge... YES! The toy made a sound. Upon hearing this, the father rushed back to take his son, but a creature which resembles a demo-dog from *Stranger Things* got him first.
A year passed and the family continued living silently... until one day, everything changed. *Nahh.. I won't spoil anymore, so just watch what happened to the family next. haha*
    [VIDEO SOURCE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR7cc5t7tv8&feature=emb_logo)
At first, I thought watching a movie *(a horror movie at that)* with minimal sound would be boring, but actually it wasn't at all. I guess the SILENCE made it more exciting. The jump scare becomes more effective because they just suddenly appear without you bracing yourself for it just like in other horror films. It's difficult to anticipate because of the silence.
I also noticed that while watching the film, the sounds were somehow in the character's point of view. I'm not sure how to explain it, but in other horror movies, we can hear the sound as if everyone can hear it... but in this film it's like we hear using the character's ears.

This scene from the bathtub will always be my favorite scene. While she was trying to escape those creatures, I also forgot how to breathe. It's like if I make a noise or even breathe, she might be in trouble as well. I don't know her, but I believe she's a really effective actress. There are a whole bunch of interesting scenes in the movie and you can just feel yourself being there. I can actually list this as one of my favorites now.

    image.png IMAGE SOURCE

It's not just the horror and the thrill that I like about this movie. It also focused on family relationship, especially parents towards their kids and siblings' relationship. I like how it relayed a message of how important family is. Aside from that, there is also logic being applied to the creatures and their weaknesses. I am so excited to watch the second part of this movie. I've read that the second movie would be next year, so I'm looking forward to watching it.
When I learned that this movie is also from "the" Stephen King's book, it made me more interested to watch it. And I am so glad I did. :) I'll end my review here. Thanks a lot for checking this post. I still have a couple of movies I watched last weekend to review, so please look forward to reading them as well. :)
Stay safe and have a great one!

  18. A quiet Place review (E@serialfiller2245d

    Tunnel Wave.png

A quiet place has been one of the most interesting cinematic phenomena in recent years. A low-budget film that has grossed a lot and has decreed a great exploit for the horror genre. An even more important exploit if we think that the genre itself came out upset, in a positive sense of course. Director John Krasinsky, who also starred in the film, gave us a film that was practically silent, but which was able to make us scream with fear thanks to a tense, constantly tense atmosphere and a brilliant stunt on which everyone in the film tried to stand up, succeeding very well. The horror genre mixed with the apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic films. We find ourselves, in fact, in a post-apocalyptic world where strange and ruthless creatures kill human beings without qualms. Their thirst for blood is generated by sound. They are in fact blind creatures that we see but who have a super developed hearing thanks to which they are able to intercept and kill their prey. Man will therefore be forced to adapt to this new state of affairs. To do so, he will begin to live a silent life. He will walk barefoot, lock himself up in dens more and more acoustically isolated, he will communicate through sign language in order to survive. This brilliant idea allows the film to travel constantly on the edge of tension, keeping the viewer anchored to the chair and to experience those atmospheres typical of the horror genre. At the same time there will be a constant curiosity in knowing where those creatures came from and how the world is reacting to that invasion. What is amazing, besides the always excellent Emily Blunt, is how Krasinsky has been able to develop excellent stories and characters. Little things scattered along the way that allowed to build a simple but surprising, cohesive but unexpected story. A truly excellent film that paved the way for a new way of doing horror, a horror with very little blood and very little need to make unimaginable things happen but without construction. A very solid and very successful film that not surprisingly is about to be released in theaters with a sequel that promises to be a great success right from the start.

  19. Film Review: A Quiet Place (2018)@janenightshade2788d

A Quiet Place (2018), directed by John Krasinski; starring Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe.

    Caution: Spoilers galore!

This film was a monster hit last spring, and in many ways, it deserves all of the critical and box office accolades that it received. A Quiet Place features an innovative premise, strong performances from the two adult leads, and a number of horror/action set pieces that are genuinely terrifying.

That said, it has a few significant flaws that keep it from being a truly great horror film (or even a significantly good one.)

The story set-up is great: there’s been an invasion of relentless alients who hunt and kill humans--or anything that makes a noise, such as an unfortunate raccoon who squeaks too loudly and becomes a bloody pile of mashed raccoon-puree. The aliens cannot see, but they can hunt with pinpoint accuracy due to their super-sensitive hearing abilities.

Those people who've survived the alien apocalypse have learned to remain deadly silent at all times to keep the creatures at bay. Even a dropped plate can result in an instant, deadly attack. Enter the Abbot family, a couple named Lee and Evelyn (played by Krasinski and Blunt), and their three children: Regan, Marcus and little Beau.

Their eldest child, the teen-aged Regan (Millicent Simmonds) has been deaf and mute from birth, an advantage for the Abbotts, as the family was already accustomed to communicating in sign language before the alien invasion.

They live in a remote farmhouse on a corn farm, which they’ve modified as much as possible to guard against the aliens and minimize sound at all times. Trails to the house are covered with sand, the family goes barefoot everywhere, and they eat without plates or utensils to minimize the possibility of dropping them.

They maintain a soundproof room in the basement. where Dad spends hours making and repairing things they need, even creating a home-made hearing aid for Regan. He also maintains an internet connection with the outside world and an extensive closed circuit monitoring system to help warn the family of the monsters' movements. Lee has also erected a silent warning system consisting of light bulbs strung across their land, which can flash bright red so that family members who are out and about can be warned of any danger at home. All of which is very cool, believable and carefully thought out by the scriptwriters.

    Girl With an Attitude.

Things seem to be going okay for the Abbotts despite their limited lifestyle, but they are unfortunately stuck with one enormous liability: their teenage daughter, Regan.

Let me just put this out there without pussyfooting around: Regan is the biggest brat portrayed on film since that other Regan was possessed by Pazuzzu the Demon in The Exorcist. And all things considered, I would much rather prefer to live with that other Regan--Pazuzzu included--than with the one in A Quiet Place.

Every single major misfortune that befalls the Abbott family is caused by Regan-the-Brat and her inability to obey her parents, even when she knows that transgressing the rules could result in instant, brutal death. She gets her youngest brother Beau killed off in the first five minutes (sorry for the spoiler, but I did warn you.) She almost gets her remaining brother Marcus killed too, after pouting and arguing with him while they are stuck on top of a grain silo, hiding out from the monsters. (To be fair the grain silo argument sets up one of the best action/horror sequences in the film, but nevertheless, I as a viewer couldn't stop thinking that it wouldn't have happened if Pouty Regan wasn't such a spoiled, headstrong, selfish brat.)

She also disobeys Dad (again) and leaves her heavily pregnant mother to give birth alone while the aliens are attacking the house, just so that Thyphoid Regan can leave a commemorative toy at the spot where she got her little brother killed.

Returning home, she gets pursued by a monster and ends up causing her dad to sacrifice himself to save her and Marcus from the aliens while they are trapped in a truck (a clever homage to Jurassic Park).

At the end, bratty Regan does redeem herself by figuring out the absurdly simple method for weakening the creatures so they can be killed (shades of the M. Night Shyamalan movie Signs). But by that time, I hated her so much that this redeeming act wasn't nearly enough. So she saved what was left of her family after getting almost half of them killed off? A great, humongous BFD to that one.

I don’t know why Krasinski would foist such an unattractive protagonist on his viewers and therefore ruin what otherwise would have been an absolutely awesome film. At least give her one sympathetic characteristic, but no, there are none. Spoiled brat Regan can’t even be told to summon her father to dinner without making a federal case out of it. Meanwhile, Dad acts like Cliff Huxtable the whole time, patiently explaining and reasoning with her--a total lost cause.

When he did that, I just wanted to shout at the screen: "Dude, buy a clue. Just slap the shit out of her and tie her securely to a post in the soundproof basement. Your life depends on it!" Sadly, his life did depend on it.

I'm sure that Millicent Simmonds is a perfectly nice young lady in real life, but she unfortunately has a face that is made for pouting and smirking. I hope she gets a role in the future that lets her play a much more sympathetic character than spoiled little bitch-ass Regan.

Getting back to the film: alas, my hatred for Regan completely destroyed my ability to appreciate this film. If you have a high tolerance for unattractive protagonists, give it a go. For myself, it's not something I would want to watch again, although it has many flashes of brilliance. A sequel is due next year, but I'm not sure I can take much more of Regan without having a full-on mental breakdown.

  21. 'A Quiet Place' by John Krasinski: Visual storytelling over dialogue@namiks2953d

    A Quiet Place.jpeg

A lot can be said about the current state of blockbuster films: they have massive budgets, focus heavily on appeal and hold simplistic narratives to maximise the potential viewing audience; although, occasionally, we're treated to the odd film that focuses on something unique, something that feels more true to the world of film and cinema. A Quiet Place is one of such films.

With the film diving quickly into its setting, A Quiet Place establishes itself through its visuals: an end-of-the-world setting, near-future, and a small family ravaging for supplies in an already-looted grocery store. Rather quickly, the film sets up its strange alien-like creatures and establishes the threat, alongside the reason as to why the characters must use sign language to communicate: sound draws their attention almost immediately.

That said, there's the odd pieces of the narrative that support dialogue, although those snippets are rarely too meaningful, and it feels nicely coordinated within the film to ensure it never really feels intrusive or distracting from the overall events, which themselves aren't pushed too much. In fact, the film feels rather lacklustre in a narrative sense; very little is told about the family, which actually is a rather enjoyable experience, given we never needed to know more than the fact that they have survived this long. It adds to the mystery of the world, and allows us to slowly piece the broader picture together ourselves.

With that narrative structure, A Quiet Place sticks to a rather emotional turn of events: a pregnancy in a world where the slightest of sounds will result in death, our most fundamental means behind our existence. That said, the film does hold a few flaws that you're bound to pick up on throughout; just tiny plot flaws that exist because of the way the story is told. Nothing that really ruins the experience overall.

A Quiet Place is a film that has you wanting much more, and not just from the characters within it, the world itself is obscure, hidden, and certainly interesting. It's a film that you'd like to see take the time to develop itself in the form of a television series, but also one that has you wanting the opposite to fully appreciate those obscurities, those hidden pieces of the universe it chose to keep away from us.

  22. Moviepass review--A Quiet Place@mctiller2964d

    A Quiet Place Movie Review

A Quiet Place takes lessons from Hitchcock in suspense and then shows us suspense like a master.  I studied filmmaking in college, and I took a class on Alfred Hitchcock movies.  Hitchcock movies are lessons in suspense.

Hitchcock was famous for telling the difference between suspense and surprise.  His example would be with surprise there is a bomb under the table that the audience does not know about and then boom! The bomb goes off surprising the audience.  Suspense is SEEING the bomb underneath the table, and waiting for it to go off, all while watching a family have dinner over the table.  That’s suspense.  Surprise happens quickly and then it’s over.  Suspense waits, it lasts longer.  It’s more satisfying.

John Krasinski of The Office fame understands this, it’s as if he studied and this is his final exam, and he passed with flying colors.  Krasinski wrote, directed, and stars as,Lee Abbot, the lead in A Quiet Place.  The movie is also nearly a silent movie.  Writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck watched a lot of silent movies in college and they put what they learned into this movie.  Telling a story without talking takes some skill.  Sign-language and subtitles are used to get the dialog across.  There are scenes later in the movie where the dialog is spoken, but you’ll see why that is later.

The movie begins with the simple statement: 89 Days.  It is 2020, and a race of monsters, we assume extra-terrestrial but are rightfully never told, has cause an apocalypse.  We first come upon the Abbott family as they are searching through an abandoned pharmacy look for supplies and medicine for their son.  There is no explanation for the dystopia, other than left over newspapers with the words “It’s Sound!”

During the opening scene Kransinski quickly gets to the suspense that will play out for the rest of the movie.  The first death in the movie is set-up from the get go.  You know the death of the youngest son going to happen and you sit there going “No. No. No!” until it does, it’s not a surprise, it’s suspense. And yet it’s still heart-wrenching when it happens.

Adding to the suspense the oldest daughter, Regan Abbott  is deaf and has concealer implant, the actress playing the Regan is Millicent Simmons who is deaf in real life, bring a reality to the role that an actor with hearing could not.  When the movie focuses on her, the sound goes out in the film, you only here complete silence.  Which will play a large part in the suspense eventually in the movie.  It’s wonderful effect that brings you closer to the character into the situation the daughter is feeling.

After the death, we skip head roughly a year.  And we find that Evelyn  Abbott is pregnant, which raises a lot of questions of course.  Why would you get pregnant during an apocalypse such as this?  And how did get pregnant when making noise would kill you?  But those question are neither here nor there, she’s pregnant and they must deal with the obvious coming crisis.

The Abbots live on an isolated farm in the middle of the United States, looks like it could be Iowa.  Which makes a great place for the monsters that hunt by sound to be.

The movie only follows the Abbots and their dealings with the monsters, but there is a wonderful scene where Lee Abbott lights a signal fire on top a silo on his farm, then fires from other settles slowly light up in the area around him.  Which raises the question, what are the people in these other places doing?  How are they surviving?  I guess having a large group of humans together would make too much noise in order for them to survive.

The movie sets up the inevitable emergency and conflict with the birth of the baby.  These scenes are reminiscent of Alien, stalking being searching for its victims, while the victim quietly hides hoping the monster will just move on.  The scenes are tense and frightening.

    Final Thoughts

I highly recommend A Quiet Place.  It is tense and frightening.  If you can, see this in the movie theater.

  23. A Geeky Guy's Movie Guide to A Quiet Place (2018)@hanshotfirst2965d

If you have read my previous posts, you already know that I am a self proclaimed scaredy cat. I am seriously the biggest wimp in the world when it comes to watching scary movies. A horror movie must be very special in order for me to be motivated to fight through my irrational fears.

    A Quiet Place is special.

*Hmmm where would "brilliant" fit in?*

One of my favorite movies of last year, Baby Driver, used sound as a character. From the first time I saw the trailer for A Quiet Place, I imagined it would be silence playing a key and interesting role in this movie.

But to be honest, it really didn't. I specifically decided to see this film the week because I wanted to experience the movie in a quality theater as its creators had intended. I was afraid it would leave theaters and I would miss my chance. I was looking forward to the unique experience of sitting in a large theater in total silence. However, that did not happen. There were sounds. There was even mood music (which truly shocked me). It is true the family mainly communicates via sign language, but I never experienced the sensation of total science that I was eagerly anticipating.

And yet, I was not disappointed at all.

It does not matter that this movie suckered me in with the promise of a peculiar gimmick that was never delivered. This movie had something far more novel... an original and excellent story.

When I was a kid, I vaguely remember watching The Swiss Family Robinson on T.V. I think I kind of liked it, but I can't be sure. I simply don't remember it very well.

*Cool story bro. Could have used some monsters though.*

Do you know what would have made me remember it forever?

If the Swiss Family Robinson were being chased around that island by monsters that would tear you apart if you made a sound!

Now that would be a great movie!

To my delight, that is nearly exactly what A Quiet Place is. Although it is presented as a sci-fi/horror movie, at its heart, this is a story about a family trying to survive thrive against extraordinary odds.

That striking of "survive" was intentional. The fact that this family is doing their best to thrive is what makes the story so compelling. It also makes the father in this movie my hero. Don’t get me wrong, the mom is a total bad-ass and they have raised two very strong children… but the dad was special. While Wonder was an ode to the super human strength of mothers, A Quiet Place is a dark fairy tale about fatherly love, strength and desire to raise survivors.

*Your father will protect you... always.*

Let's get into the movie itself.

A Quiet Place was masterfully written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski. Krasinski also directed the movie and portrayed the heroic father. Who knew that after all of those years stuck at Dunder Mifflin Jim would be so talented and tough? Because the story is so simple (A family tries to thrive despite the fact that they are surrounded by monsters who hunt via sound) the creators were incredibly wise to keep the run-time under 90 minutes. One of my biggest complaints about The Shape of Water is that it was way too long. When you want to disguise an emotional movie as sci-fi... make it quick. Otherwise, there are too many opportunities for it to fall apart. This movie never missed a beat. I spent the entire 90 minutes highly engaged. I was either on the edge of my seat or the edge of tears for nearly every one of those 5400 seconds.

In addition to a simple story, the film only requires 6 actors. Krasinski is perfect. His actual wife, Emily Blunt, does a sensational job portraying the incredibly strong, brave and caring mother (wait perhaps she is the hero... she's a close second). Noah Jupe, who happened to play Jack Will in Wonder, was believable as the son who is a scared child learning to be confident and strong. Millicent Simmonds plays the angst ridden older sister. Both children do well in their action sequences.

    *Families stick together.*

Although the monsters are not on screen very often, they look realistic and terrifying.

Some may have a problem with how little the monsters are actually on the screen. Being the scaredy cat that I am, I was completely fine with it. Although I did jump a few times, that was not the real point of the movie. For the most part, the violence is more implied than directly shown. The monsters are there to drive the story of these characters whom we love.

I would imagine some sci-fi/horror fans may be a bit disappointed with the limited scares and action. Although there are plenty of both in the third act, it takes quite a while to get up to speed. After a very intense opening sequence, the audience needs to wait nearly 35 minutes for the action to pick up.

Even though it was slow, the middle 35 minutes of this movie was not boring. The writers needed to establish this family as one we would hope we could be if thrust into a dire situation. While they are fleshing out the characters, you also get a glimpse of some of the tactics the father was implementing in order to assure his family's safety. I was so interested in those that it never felt like the movie was dragging.

In the interest of avoiding any spoilers, I won't talk about the climax of this movie aside from expressing that it was believable and perfect.

I am in awe of how well this movie blended a story about a family's love and determination with one about terrifying monsters. I fully expect that A Quiet Place will be included on my list of best movies of 2018.

The only complaint I have about this movie at all is that I loved it so much that I wish it were part of the Cloverfield universe. The story would fit so perfectly that I am hoping I am wrong and I missed a Susho! reference or a Kelvin gas station. As soon as this movie is released on DVD, I am going to buy it and study every frame in search of any Cloverfield related Easter eggs.

Then I will watch it with my son.

    Geeky Guy's Movie Guide

Number of times I fell asleep: 0 (Short run time + wonderful characters + action in the 3rd act = awesome!) Number of eye rolls: 0 (I am shocked out how well thought out this was. No holes that I could find.) Number of face palms: 0 Number of times I checked steemit: 0 (And I was literally the only person in the theater so I could have) Can my kids see it: 13 year old son and I will watch it this summer. My 11 year old daughter is too young. Number of times I will watch it: As many as it takes to connect it to Cloverfield. Full price/Matinee/Rental/Free/Not worth the time: Even without the total silence it was still worth full price.

  24. "A Quiet Place" - movie review@godflesh2989d

"Horror" is one of those very controversial concepts that cause almost as much debate as "Episode VIII: The Last Jedi" - is it horrible when only things suddenly pop out and the story is written by a third grade? Is it horror when there is unbearable tension all the time, but "there is nothing scary"? "A Quiet Place" is one of the films in this debate that bravely occupy the middle ground of a horror thriller and that only makes them better. John Kissinger's third film as a director (after "The Hollers" and "Brief Interviews with Hidden Men") relies on his excellent original hook - a family living in a postcaplicoptic world where it does not have to make any sound, and does not let you for a minute to rest until you see the final inscriptions.

    A_Quiet_Place_film_poster.png

John Krasnysky and Emily Blunt, married couple for example and real life, play mother and father of three children who live in isolation and silence, afraid of monsters with extremely harsh hearing, which are all in seconds destroy. They have developed systems to maintain a fairly normal existence on their farm, planted with corn, so that they can live with minimal noise - they draw the planks of the boards on which they can step without creaking, have a soundproofed basement and use sign language. The gestures that they have probably learned for the help of their deaf daughters (the extraordinary Milissent Simunds - a deaf actress and real-life). Because they do not have to make noise, the film has a very little dialogue that puts the cast in the difficult position to convey the emotions and experiences of their characters almost entirely with expressions and mimics that make you more than impeccable. Unnecessarily, I think, is to discuss Emily Blount, a world-class actress (who did not see Sicario fix the mistake instantly). The scene in which the film is being promoted, in which she gives birth to a child in her tub without making noise, will remain in the audience's mind for months. Attention should be paid to the two young actors, Milisent Simmonds and Noa Jupp, who make the audience immerse in the nightmare they live in.

    aquietpg13.jpg

Most importantly, I will remember John Krasnysky, who has the difficult task of directing, being the main screenwriter but also playing a major role that will undoubtedly remain as a luminous star in his resume - paternal care, dedication and indolence in the face of horror, which he radiates with all his being, will not be forgotten for a long time. The technical achievements of "A Quiet Place" should also not be underestimated. With an estimated budget of $ 18 million, this is a relatively low-budget production that looks impressive. More than visual, however, makes use of sound / music and silence. The film switches between the perspective of the heroes when there is music or background noises, and the prospect of the deaf daughter, when suddenly every sound disappears and a simple echo is heard, listening to a raptured eagle. This technique affects the viewer so much that when, during the screening at which I was present, one of them was screaming the phone, all the heads turned at the same time horrified in the direction of the offender. "A Quiet Place" relies on monsters as much as every film needs an antagonist. His true value is in family relationships that hit the viewer in the heart, even if he never felt a real fear of his life. The topics of family affection and dedication, the absolute willingness of parents to do everything for their children, even the relationship between brother and sister - precisely these are the essence of what makes the film so successful.

    1280189_a-quiet-place-paramount-pictures.jpg

For fans of the classic horror, "A Quiet Place" may seem boring, as it relies on very different priorioms to create tension. At the same time, admirers of quality thrillers will easily notice that in some places the cheap and elemental frightening when something pops up on the screen becomes more than necessary. There is a moment that is a seemingly irritating horror cliche, but it passes easily. The same goes for a few details that remain inexplicable, and are important enough to even be considered holes in the plot, such as the presence of electricity at an extremely convenient time. In spite of one or two apparent errors in the logic of the movie, which become more noticeable, the more you think about them, "A Quiet Place" is a movie that performs its task more than successfully. Visually impressive and emotionally engaging, he is one of those films that do not just stay in mind, but create themes for conversation for a long time. I have no doubt that it will remain in the future, if nothing else, like the first film after "Get out" Which reinforces the tendency of modern times that comedian actors are extremely capable of producing meaningful and meaningful hordes that have something to say.

  25. Review Film: A Quiet Place (2018)@film-trail2999d

Instead of the monstrous form of the monster, A Quiet Place chose to emphasize the action and impact of its action. The glorious figure who preyed on the victims, front-page pieces of the newspaper that included the diverse unity of the faithful all over the world, until the realization that sound is the way the monster detects the victim. This is the way the director and screenwriter (with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck) and the lead actor, John Krasinski, implements the inspiration he gets from Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975), Even similar horror pioneer term "summer blockbuster" is, A Quiet Place opens the duration through a tragedy. Without further ado, without the exposition of the background, the story is directly brought to day 89 post-invasion of a mysterious monster. The day that the couple Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and their two sons, Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe) realize how terrifying the monster is not kidding. The awareness that the film is hoping to help the audience can. Then the path jumps to day 472 and they still live the day hiding.

I'm often disturbed when a horror movie shows its character hiding from the pursuit of a monster or a killer (usually in a closed place like a closet) but with a clear-sounding hunting breath. A Quiet Place eliminates similar disruptions because the small chafing sound of the medicine box with the cabinet alone gives "yellow light" to the character. Walk barefoot, communicate using sign language, essentially they must live a daily life that is not only dangerous, also tiring. They can only surrender considering the weakness of unknown monster, Later the weakness will be revealed, which unfortunately it creates a hole in the script. How could the weakness be ignored when the ability of the monster to detect through a voice can be revealed? Though the script appears solid in describing the details of the lives of the survivors, especially the way they block the creation of sound. The cloth as a substitute for a plate, a towel as a base to block the water droplets of the sink, the little things that are often overlooked, is here taken care of. Wait until you see how Lee outsmarts the crying sound of the baby.

Lee is a cunning guy, so does John Krasinski as a director. He is good at creating hits through jump scare, which must be done over and over, never failing to give a shock effect. I also admire the development of its intensity, including the use of false alarm shaped a nail that always provokes anxiety every camera focuses on it. Although the distance between terror is sometimes too tenuous, the tension is instantly restored thanks to precision plus creativity in both the script and the directing. A Quiet Place insists that drowning in silos is more terrible than in water.

A Quiet Place also raises parallel with the challenge of parenting. Get a defiant child as you approach your teens, having to share the same affection with each child, protecting them while questioning "how much do you want to sacrifice for a child?". Krasinski with his bushy beard fits in the post-apocalyptic world as a tactical, clever, trained, yet tired man. Loving but confused how to say it. The wife, (in the real world and the movie), Blunt, convinces as usual, whether it's about expressing the pain, the fear, the tenderness of a mother's love.

  26. A Quiet Place - Movie Review@coldsteem3005d

    image.png

I love a good suspense/thriller. Hollywood seems to put out as many bad ones as good. I have been watching the trailers for A Quiet Place, which has a Cloverfield vibe for several weeks. The premise of this film captivated me from the beginning. This was definitely a film with potential. Did it reach its potential? Read on.

    image.png

Lee (John Krasinski) and his wife Evelyn (Emily Blunt) are raising their children on a post-apocalyptic farm. An alien race has invaded earth and appear to attack based on their incredible sense of sound. The family must remain completely silent or risk falling prey, literally, to the vicious invaders. The family communicates with sign language. Their daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) is the oldest. She is also deaf. Marcus (Noah Jupe) is second oldest, but still very young. And terrified. The youngest, Beau (Cade Woodward) doesn't fully understand the world he finds himself in. A dangerous situation to say the least.

As if the rules weren't difficult enough already, Evelyn is pregnant. Lee spends his days working on a hearing aid for Regan and attempting to contact others through his advanced radio equipment. The family relationships seem strained. There is a history that seems to create a palpable tension between two family members. The family has done well scavenging, growing, canning and surviving. They have perfected homesteading, having created a complex system of communication and movement. They have even made complex plans for soundproofing the newborn they will soon welcome into their family. A quickly escalating series of events will test their ability to survive, adapt and overcome.

    image.png

I'm going to answer my question about potential now. Yes, A Quiet Place reaches its potential. And possibly exceeds it. A film with no dialogue might seem gimmicky in any other format. It's not like we haven't seen exactly that this past year in the film Silence. That is a film I have not yet reviewed, but would also get high marks from me. A Quiet Place builds tension with steady pacing, intense action sequences, scary aliens and an awesome concept. I connected with the characters and found myself immersed in the film. I was completely sucked in. When a film can pull you in, it has succeeded. While not perfect, this film was fairly close.

    image.png

The success had a lot to do with the casting. Krasinki was also the director, which allowed him a bit of nepotism in casting his real-world wife, Emily Blunt as his screen wife. So the chemistry was not much of a stretch, I suppose. Both were rock solid. Millicent Simmonds is deaf in real life. She was pretty solid in Wonderstruck, but I enjoyed her performance more in this film. Noah Jupe was the "best friend" in the film Wonder. I enjoyed his performance most in this film. Both he and Simmonds are likely to have a strong future in film. The casting was excellent.

    image.png

A Quiet Place received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. The film is incredibly tense. Nightmare material. There is a bit of gore, to include a couple of deaths that are not graphically shown, but are graphically heard. The film will likely cause nightmares in younger viewers. Which is probably why I enjoyed it. The film had me on the edge of my seat for most of the one hour, thirty minute run time. Heart palpitating fun.

    image.png

A Quiet Place has a lot going for it. It is original, it is scary, it is intense, it has great pacing, it is well cast and it will keep you on edge the entire film. Strong casting, solid performances, interesting characters, super scary aliens and an impossible premise give this film the tension that suspense film strive for. This film fits a lot of categories, but I would call it suspense/thriller because I was nervous the entire film. Great job. 8.5/10.
