A Quiet Place (my review/reaction) [WARNING: May contain VERY minor spoilers]

Review by @tegoshei · 2142d · of A Quiet Place

*Recently, on the nights when I don't plot any classes, I watch some movies with my parents. It's like a time to bond, although there are some movies that we can't watch together and that is horror/thriller. I am a sucker for horror and thrillers, but my mama hates them. Good thing though, my papa also enjoys it. What we do is, papa and I watch a horror/thriller film first after he closes the store at around 9:30 in the evening. That time, mama is busy computing and budgeting stuff from the store and also daily expenses. Then after the first movie, we watch another movie of any genre except horror/thriller until past midnight.*
So in this post, I'm going to give my review/opinion on a horror/thriller film called ***"A QUIET PLACE"***.

The movie started with a family of five trying to get some stuff from some abandoned pharmacy or store. They were collecting some medicines and other necessities they need at home. And while doing so, no one in the family was making any noise. Until the youngest son, perhaps around 3-4 years old, took an airplane toy which is battery operated to produce some sound. Hurriedly, the father took the toy from him, detached the battery and warned him not to make a sound while being freakingly careful and observant of their surroundings. When nothing happened, they all tried to head home; barefoot and following a trail of something like sand to refrain from making a sound.
*"Okay..."*, I thought, *"This is going to be a very silent movie as suggested by the title."* However, when the family was on their way home, the youngest child actually took the plane and the batteries with him. And while they were about to cross the bridge... YES! The toy made a sound. Upon hearing this, the father rushed back to take his son, but a creature which resembles a demo-dog from *Stranger Things* got him first.
A year passed and the family continued living silently... until one day, everything changed. *Nahh.. I won't spoil anymore, so just watch what happened to the family next. haha*

At first, I thought watching a movie *(a horror movie at that)* with minimal sound would be boring, but actually it wasn't at all. I guess the SILENCE made it more exciting. The jump scare becomes more effective because they just suddenly appear without you bracing yourself for it just like in other horror films. It's difficult to anticipate because of the silence.
I also noticed that while watching the film, the sounds were somehow in the character's point of view. I'm not sure how to explain it, but in other horror movies, we can hear the sound as if everyone can hear it... but in this film it's like we hear using the character's ears.

This scene from the bathtub will always be my favorite scene. While she was trying to escape those creatures, I also forgot how to breathe. It's like if I make a noise or even breathe, she might be in trouble as well. I don't know her, but I believe she's a really effective actress. There are a whole bunch of interesting scenes in the movie and you can just feel yourself being there. I can actually list this as one of my favorites now.

It's not just the horror and the thrill that I like about this movie. It also focused on family relationship, especially parents towards their kids and siblings' relationship. I like how it relayed a message of how important family is. Aside from that, there is also logic being applied to the creatures and their weaknesses. I am so excited to watch the second part of this movie. I've read that the second movie would be next year, so I'm looking forward to watching it.
When I learned that this movie is also from "the" Stephen King's book, it made me more interested to watch it. And I am so glad I did. :) I'll end my review here. Thanks a lot for checking this post. I still have a couple of movies I watched last weekend to review, so please look forward to reading them as well. :)
Stay safe and have a great one!

I only saw up to the part where the son got taken by the monster because he took the toy with him and it made a sound.

Very good review @tegoshei. This movie sounds very intense. I will watch it quietly.

It was scary and I was amused by the audience's reaction, at least the ones who were with me when we watched the film at home. I had family and friends over. I am sure everyone in the cinema ensured their mobile phones were off or silent throughout the film. 😁 I didn't know there would be a sequel. I am a big fan of Emily Blunt so I will definitely wait for this film. Thank you for sharing this.
