Pas early-early watching this movie, lo will feel a little disappointed with the acting of the less mature of the two main characters. Coupled with a cinematography that is too standard for horror movies and non-linear grooves that make lo ngga understand where exactly the focus of the story in this movie. Hell, you even know what the movie is about after 30 minutes when Kaylie (played by Karen Gillan) tells chronologically what the film's problems are in the narrative explanation of video-making purpose scenes.
It is about Kaylie who tries to prove that an antique mirror has been responsible for the deaths of dozens of people who once belonged, including her father and mother. Together with his brother Tim (played by Brenton Thwaites) they set up cameras and traps in the room where the mirror was kept to record evidence that the mirror has supernatural powers that can affect the people around it.
But as time goes by, they too end up stuck in a gripping reality distortion as the mirror begins to play with their minds. The non-linear but parallel storyline (as in the Memento movie) seems to be interconnected in some parts. The horror story plot is arranged in such a way that it makes us curious and emotional to see the ending of the story that was not in accordance with our expectations. The horror element in this movie is not only caused by the creepy ghost, but also through the special effects that blur the boundaries between past timeline, present timeline, and supernatural illusion, making us wonder what really happened to Kaylie and Tim.
A good narrative style and complex story (based on Oculus Chapter 3 - The Man with The Plan, short film directed and written by Mike Flanagan) with an unorthodox plot to make this movie a plus, able to cover less than the maximum of acting Karen Gillian and Brenton Thwaites. With enough hanging endings, the audience will expect a lot for the sequel. Recommended for you horror movie lovers who prefer to be confused and wonder anxious rather than dikagetin and spit-muncratin blood.
