Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
It’s the middle of October, "spooky season" is in full swing, and today we’re looking at Oculus. Mike Flanagan is currently a hot topic thanks to Carrie—the Prime Video series that has everyone talking—but his body of work extends well beyond that. He has several major titles to his name, most notably his productions for Netflix: The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass—which, in my view, are the best in his repertoire. But returning to today’s film: it’s arguably one of his first successful projects, standing out for its intricate psychological thriller plot and a brand of horror that is highly characteristic of his style.
The Russell family’s story does not end well; ten years earlier, Tim and Kaylie’s parents died under rather strange circumstances. Following these events, Tim—the younger child—was accused of murdering his father and subsequently sent to a psychiatric facility for treatment. Now an adult, Tim is finally released, hoping to rebuild his life and leave all that trauma behind. His sister, however, sees things differently; she firmly believes that Tim is innocent and that the true culprit is a mirror inhabited by a malevolent, supernatural presence. Kaylie is so convinced of this that she sets up an investigation—a sort of study—in their childhood home, with the goal of revealing the truth to everyone while simultaneously destroying the mirror.
The thing is, this won’t be so easy for them; as time passes, the mirror begins to resist, manipulating their perception of reality and their memories, while playing with the traumatic past both siblings experienced in that house. Consequently, discerning what is actually happening—as opposed to what is merely a product of this entity’s games—becomes an incredibly complex and terrifying ordeal. As I mentioned, the film operates on two levels: the psychological and the paranormal. The former can be quite confusing at times; it is up to the viewer to figure out what is truly occurring, as the plot toys with the possibility that everything unfolding is merely a construct of the mind. After all, having spent time in a mental health facility, Tim views things more rationally, whereas Kaylie is convinced that the mirror itself is the source of the absolute terror.
In that regard, the psychological thriller aspect is very well executed; when you start to doubt what you’re seeing, it means the effect has succeeded. Now, let’s talk about the supernatural horror. This film is from 2013, and seeing it helps me understand all those series I mentioned earlier. The typical depiction of a specter, ghost, or entity—a pale figure with glowing eyes—is the same one used in all those other productions. Can it be scary? Well, there are a few moments that deliver effective jolts and jump scares. But I think what really does the heavy lifting is what we don’t see: the lingering sense that something is out there, wreaking havoc, along with the way people behave when under the mirror’s "spell"—essentially, everything that stems from the paranormal. Personally, I felt it lacked intensity; the premise is solid—though the "mirror" concept isn’t exactly new to cinema—but it certainly works.
Katee Sackhoff does a really cool job as the mother. Her scenes involving possession and madness are quite intense. Karen Gillan, as Kaylie, also delivers a solid performance. She isn’t an actress you’d typically associate with the horror genre, but she does a decent job here, conveying both anguish and courage—she’s the one who steps up, while her brother is more cautious and fearful, for reasons that become clear. Ultimately, the film barely makes the grade—at least for me; I expected something different from Flanagan, even considering this was made 13 years ago. If he were to remake this film today, would he do it the same way? I suspect he might actually do a worse job. It gets a passing grade, but only just. It’s not terrible to watch, but something about it just didn’t quite click for me. You might end up liking it, though, so I’d encourage you to give it a chance. It’s just over an hour and a half long. Here’s the trailer.
Alright folks, that’s all for today—I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!

Pas early-early watching this movie, lo will feel a little disappointed with the acting of the less mature of the two main characters. Coupled with a cinematography that is too standard for horror movies and non-linear grooves that make lo ngga understand where exactly the focus of the story in this movie.
