  1. Una película peculiar: El menú // A peculiar movie: The menu@erigm1248d

¡Hola amigos!

Hello friends! Today I bring you the review of a movie that has its own particular imprint: The Menu.

¿De qué trata? - What is it about?

The Menu tells the story of a couple who embark on the adventure of going with other diners to an exclusive island to taste the famous dishes of a well-known chef. However, in this journey, things beyond imagination will happen that will make them rethink if they will ever be able to leave that island or if it is too late to turn back. The menu will be the protagonist of this film.

Well I must say that it is a very peculiar movie, when I decided to see it I had little knowledge of what it was really going to be about. I had read a very interesting review here and I was curious to know more about this movie, why the name, what will be the macabre and mysterious part that the protagonists go through. The film is divided according to the menu, first we start with the appetizer. There we see a little of the chef's dynamic and the conversation among the diners begins, the atmosphere is that of a tasting.

But we have the inconvenience, for the chef, that he has a guest who was not on the list and that takes him a little off his axis because he already had everything as planned. So he keeps wondering who this young lady is and why she seems reluctant to try his dishes and ruin his menu.

At the beginning, the evening goes smoothly, from dish to dish, but each one will increase the tone of the film, becoming more and more daring and disturbing. From the fourth course onwards we see that the situation is not looking good for the characters, but they cannot leave the restaurant. So everyone starts to panic and the situation gets out of control. Although the chef seems to have everything under control since he had foreseen this type of situation and the way to calm the mood. His main mission is to take these diners to the last dish, which will be the culminating moment of his work.

Now, told in this way it seems quite interesting. However, the story as such seemed to me a bit weak in argumentation. I understand the real reason for making this film and that the criticism, or mockery, is directed at the food industry and its critics. But I feel that some parts of the script were not explained very well, or maybe it was me who did not understand, for example: the reason for choosing the diners. I understand that he gave each of them an appointment because they had committed questionable acts towards him, the chef, or towards others. You get to an explanation of how some of them got to that point, but not all of the participants. Which made me wonder, even now, why they ended up there. Although if I have to analyze this movie rationally I'm going to die trying.

It is a film that plays with the mental plane of the characters, taking them to an extreme in which they resign themselves to accept the situation, and I would say that they even celebrate it, they go from denial, from wanting to get out of it, until they adapt to what is happening. They seem to accept the destiny imposed on them.

My favorite part and the one that stands out the most is the symbolism of each dish with its explanation and the criticism they were giving as they were tasting (at least at the beginning), along with the message that people end up paying for expensive food to maintain a status and, many times, kill to criticism the work of chefs who push themselves to create innovative dishes knowing that in the end you can't please everyone and that it is more satisfying to make food that seems to make people happy, something simple that they enjoy, like a cheeseburger.

On the other hand, Anya Taylor-Joy's performance was brilliant as always in this type of genre, she usually does quite well. I also liked Nicholas Hoult's performance, although he made me hate him a lot, especially for the carefree attitude that his character showed. The truth is that this was very well done, but there were times when I didn't understand why he ended up agreeing to such an invitation when he knew the background of everything. Anyway. Another standout is Ralph Fiennes as the Chef, he was unflappable in the face of everything.

In short, it is a film that can be analyzed and, I think, everyone can get a different idea. But I definitely recommend that you see it so you can draw your own conclusions about it. Thanks for coming this far and reading. See you next time!

  2. The Menu - I want a cheeseburger | Film Review | En-Es|@jcrodriguez1258d

    The sound of clapping.

Followed by the noise that indicates a group of cooks acting as an army, standing firm and pronouncing the magic words: Yes, Chef!

A clapping that will disturb us every time we hear it. Just as it disturbs Margot, the protagonist of the film, who feels that annoying clapping as an aggression to her senses.

A clapping executed by Julian Slowik, the chef of a prestigious restaurant intended for the privileged of society, only those who have enough money to pay for a dinner of more than a thousand dollars, are the only mortals who can enter that small kingdom where the chef is the absolute master. With employees that seem more like part of a commune or sect, willing to do anything to fulfill the wishes of their god.

A restaurant designed to offer a unique experience, but that will make us feel a little anguish. The tension was increasing with the presentation of each dish served, as if it were a play. Be prepared to enter a universe in which it is better not to look for logical explanations to many of the things that happen, otherwise you will not enjoy the black humor of this story. Don't eat the film, feel its texture, taste it, savor it, enjoy it.

For some viewers it may be a strange film, maybe it happens to them like one of the characters, who is unable to remember any dish of all the times he has attended to eat at that place, because he is used to swallow what the industry provides him, without stopping to enjoy the product.

What genre is this movie? As with any upscale menu, there is a mix of delicious flavors, spread over several courses, which at once make up all the narrative acts of the film. Some work better than others; not everything is perfect on a menu, no matter how much its chef fancies himself the representation of a divinity on earth. Not everyone can like the same flavors. It's up to us to find the dish that fascinates us.

A culinary thriller? Yes, the film can be tied with that label, but it also carries several condiments and has garnishes on the plate. Black comedy, horror, social criticism. The critical part, of course, is associated with the new gastronomic trends in terms of luxury restaurants, with chefs who experiment and want to sell to the world of the rich, that their food is a whole new sensory experience and that eating in these certain places is synonymous with status.

I'm not a fan of these types of places, I don't have the money to pay for them, but if I did, I wouldn't pay so much money for these supposedly prestigious dining experiences either. I'm very basic with what I like to eat, plus I don't like being ripped off in such a direct way, selling me tiny food on a big plate that doesn't satisfy my hunger.

I have seen these restaurants on culinary TV shows, where they are visited by the host of the show to promote the place. Some become famous by being on TV, for example, in Spain there is currently a very famous chef, who is the husband of a TV presenter. His restaurant has been very successful among those who can afford to spend a generous amount of euros. Celebrities, celebrities, politicians, show business people, attend to see and be seen, remember, it makes them feel they are of a higher status.

My personal opinion is that these places are run by very skilled smoke peddlers, managing to capture their target audience. The wealthy. A real life example is the upscale restaurant franchise of Salt Bae, the chef in the meme, where a dinner for two people, can cost an amount of money with which a family can buy food for two months, depending on the country where they live. This is my personal opinion on the subject of these restaurants for the rich, what I think will not affect them, I am not their target, and those who have the money and want to live that experience, are free to do so. Free market.

Libre mercado.

Filmmaker Mark Mylod is in charge of directing this culinary and rich people satire, he has experience in it, he has directed many TV series of different genres, but one of them has been Succession, where the life of millionaires is also addressed with a lot of black humor. It is one of my current favorite series, another gem from HBO. Mylod brings to the screen this script written by two people, one of them, according to his IMDB file: Will Tracy who worked for John Oliver's late show.

For these reasons, The Menu is not just a critique of the world of haute cuisine. No. Analogies can be made from this satire to any other industry, for example, to the movie industry itself and even to politics.

I think that is the strong point of the film, that each viewer who manages to connect and get carried away by the story, can give it the reading he or she wants, beyond the gastronomic field. In that aspect, it fulfills its objective, by pointing out through various stereotypes of characters, some of the ills of society and laughing a little at people who have certain economic privileges.

We have the pair of food critics, those beings who seem to have a different palate than others, who have come to occupy a position of privilege within that world, capable of destroying the career of any chef, bankrupting a restaurant, etc., just by giving a bad review. Living in that little bubble where they are powerful and respected but fall heavy for their pedantry.

The actor who had his time of fame and is now at the lowest point of his career, wanting to boost it again through a culinary program idea, when he himself has no idea how to do it, just pretending while he wants to be recognized by people and live past glories. This character will be accompanied by his assistant who is thinking of quitting and has an attitude that we have already seen from similar characters in many other productions.

The elderly couple, with years of marriage behind them, living a lie, because in their marriage there is no more love and the gentleman, resorts to other services to get moments of pleasure and happiness.

The young people who work in an investment company, where they do their shenanigans and steal from the same company, to continue living a life of luxury, they are scandalous, immature and arrogant. Rich kids used to everyone doing what they want because they have money. Surely you have come across someone like that at some point in your life.

    Source

In the main focus of the story, there is the young couple who are apparently in love. We will quickly find out the truth. He is the chef's fanboy, unhealthily praises everything his admired cook does, likes to show that he has knowledge of cooking and that his palate is different, feeling ecstatic at every dish. She is the outside agent who doesn't fit into the meticulous dinner planning. She is not part of the elite and must choose which side she prefers to be on, though she is warned that her fate will be the same.

Finally there are the hosts, the chef whose passion for what he does no longer seems to exist. Gone are the days when he was surely a man happy to serve others, but that same society he has pampered for years has had enough of him, pushing him to make the ultimate decision to give them what they deserve and make something unforgettable. To do this he relies on his army of cooks who, blinded like members of a cult, will follow their leader to the end.

The Menu has a few downs in its narrative structure, such as when it makes you want to go to the bathroom in the middle of dinner. The production design is impeccable and fascinated me, but there comes a point when the film also suffers from the very thing it criticizes. The social satire I was enjoying feels a bit empty at certain moments, as do many of those pretentious dishes the chef serves, very ornate on the surface, but with little flavor underneath.

The treatment of some of the characters is very superficial, although I can understand that because the film is about an hour and forty minutes long and there are a lot of characters. Perhaps as a TV miniseries it would have worked very well. On the other hand, I would have liked the presence of gastronomic influencers in the story, that is, there are the culinary critic characters, but I would have liked to see that new generation of influencers of social networks, young people, who love to eat in those restaurants in exchange for making good reviews in their networks with millions of followers.

But I can't complain, the evening was wonderful, the acting duo of Ralhp Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy is fantastic. She is wonderful and I enjoyed every single one of her scenes. She is a spellbinding actress on screen, she has a rare and mesmerizing beauty. For the good work of both of them, they are nominated in the categories of best actor and actress in comedy and musical at the Golden Globes, ceremony of which I made my predictions in my previous post.

The Menú is a disturbing satire in which the viewer can find several layers and readings to its social criticism, extrapolated to many other areas, not only gastronomy. Some situations that may seem absurd, very theatrical, for me are the funniest. You have to prepare your palate and taste each dish. Although I am like Margot's character, I like to eat well, I prefer a double beef and cheeseburger...

I'll read you in the comments.

  3. The Menu (2022) Social Commentary Served as Haute Cuisine@macchiata1306d

The Menu was playing in the movie theater globally just 4 days ago. From my last post, I mentioned that I watched it just as soon as it’s released into the cinema. As a foodie, this movie can not be missed from my sight. What could go wrong in a movie that will talk about haute cuisine in a hell’s kitchen style?. The Menu is produced by the same producer of Don’t Look UP, Adam Mckay and another comedian, Will Ferrel. With their background, you might expect that the movie will make you laugh, but can they?

    image.png

    source

    Is this Literal Hell’s kitchen?

The movie starts with a scene of Tyler(Nicholas Hoult) and Margot Mills (Anya TaylorJoy)at the dock waiting for their boat to take them to their $1250 fine dining experience in a Hawthorne restaurant. Tyler was supposed to take his girlfriend but ended up hiring Margot Mills to be his companion for the evening. The fine-dining experience is also attended by a couple who are frequent Hawthorne’s customers, a post Hollywood actor who claimed to know the chef of Hawthorne, three snobby tech executives, food critics and her editor. They are all excited to eat at Hawthorne's, which is led by Julian Slowik(Ralph Fiennes), a celebrity chef. Upon arriving at the private island, the scene started to build up indicating that something is up their sleeve. They were greeted by Elsa(Hong Chau) who played as restaurant maitre d’ with her mannerism that was already odd. The group then showed the garden where various fresh ingredients were grown and the smoke house, where they store the meat.

As soon as they walked into a compound similar to Hell’s kitchen style, the door closed. As everyone seated, they were soon served the first course. Each course served has stories tied to Slowik’s life and where he got the inspiration from. Then as the course got into the 4th, it turned grim where one of the sous chefs killed himself and the business tycoon got his finger cut that shocked everyone. Things started to get serious and this slowly revealed Slowik’s motive into organizing this fine dining group and only picking the selective people that had an impact on his life. In the end, there is only one survivor in this murderous yet filled with scrummy haute cuisine. Who can escape this disastrous night?

    thumbnail.jpg

Throughout the film, with Ralph Fiennes' expression, I was expecting Hannibal style cooking. It’s gruesome and murderous but Hannibal was able to always craft scrumptious cuisine with his “fresh and flesh” ingredient. However, it wasn’t the case. I got the chilling expression but the cooking was normal. They were truly works of art with normal ingredients. So, we can be relieved that it’s not actually “fresh and flesh” cooking style.

In this movie, as a foodie you’d learn to pick up so many pretentious words that food critics tend to use as well. You’d learn that they play with words, are snobbish and can be annoying especially for the chef. As this title mentioned too, this serves as social commentary as each patron was from different backgrounds and how annoying they can be. There’s also the tech workers who were revealed to have slush funds and also how they can threaten anyone under their investment. They also wanted to be treated like royals which can be annoying. Then, the business tycoon with his wife who seems to never get satisfied with the wealth they have and the food that they ate.

It’s not the kind of movie that will leave you with huge impression but this just as good as the movie that talks about food but with a twist.
