Hace un par de días atrás mi esposo y yo miramos un Review en YouTube de la película El Menú que hizo que dijéramos ¡Debemos ir a verla! Esta reseña fue solo una entrada, un pedacito de lo que realmente probaríamos una vez que empezara la película. La película, del director Mark Mylod, fue estrenada a finales del 2022 y la sinopsis es la siguiente: un grupo de adinerados llega a una isla donde está ubicado el lujoso restaurante del chef Julian Slowik. La entrada es costosa y selecta, sin embargo, lo que al principio parecía ser una experiencia de la alta cocina, poco a poco se transforma en una experiencia perturbadora.
A couple of days ago my husband and I watched a YouTube Review of the movie The Menu that made us say We must go see it! This review was just an entree, a little piece of what we would actually taste once the movie started. The movie, from director Mark Mylod, was released in late 2022 and the synopsis is as follows: a group of wealthy people arrive on an island where chef Julian Slowik's luxury restaurant is located. The entrance is expensive and select, however, what at first seemed to be an experience of haute cuisine, slowly transforms into a disturbing experience.
En un principio, yo me interesé por la película para conocer, psicológicamente hablando, a estos personajes, qué los lleva a tener la necesidad de vivir y demostrar que viven este tipo de excentricidades. A fin de cuentas, la pretensión, lo excesivo y lujoso abunda en la actualidad, sobre todo en las redes sociales, y todos, de alguna u otra forma, parecieran aspirar a ese tipo de vidas. El ego, ser un “poser” o aparentar ser algo para conseguir un fin, el materialismo y las uniones por conveniencia son solo algunas de las características presentes en estos personajes. Sin embargo, la película va mucho más allá esto. Es, en muchos sentidos, una crítica social, pero al discutir la película con mi esposo llegamos a la conclusión de que esta es solo la superficie de todos los posibles análisis e interpretaciones que puede llegar a tener esta obra. Por supuesto que es una crítica al snobismo, lo absurdo en el arte, la comida, lo mucho que das en comparación con lo poco que recibes. Pero también hemos visto algo más…
Initially, I was interested in the film to get to know, psychologically speaking, these characters, what drives them to have the need to live and show that they live these kinds of eccentricities. After all, pretentiousness, excess and luxury abound nowadays, especially in social networks, and everyone, in one way or another, seems to aspire to that kind of life. Ego, being a "poser" or pretending to be something to achieve an end, materialism and unions of convenience are just some of the characteristics present in these characters. However, the film goes far beyond this. It is, in many ways, a social critique, but in discussing the film with my husband we came to the conclusion that this is only the surface of all the possible analyses and interpretations that this work can have. Of course it is a critique of snobbery, absurdity in art, food, how much you give compared to how little you get. But we have also seen something else...
Los últimos días hemos estado conversando sobre cómo “El chef” y el resto de trabajadores en la cocina representan el poder, el gobierno y los funcionarios públicos. Los comensales representan a los civiles, personas con todo tipo de realidades que en un principio compran la idea o el concepto de los líderes de un país, y en la medida en que todo avanza se decepcionan, y tienen esa sensación de disconformidad, de estar atrapados pero sin posibilidades de huir.
The last few days we've been talking about how "The Chef" and the rest of the workers in the kitchen represent power, government and civil servants. The diners represent the civilians, people with all kinds of realities who at first buy the idea or the concept of the leaders of a country, and as it all progresses they become disappointed, and have that sense of nonconformity, of being trapped but with no chance of escape.
Y en algún punto de la película, los que se suponen que están allí para proteger a los comensales/civiles, son una burla, y una de las piezas más importantes del lado del poder, para que todo continúe tal cual lo planeado.
And at some point in the film, those who are supposed to be there to protect the diners/civilians, are a mockery, and one of the most important pieces on the side of power, so that everything continues as planned.
El chef sabe perfectamente quiénes serán sus comensales y ha planificado la cena en función de ellos, sin embargo, hay una mujer en específico que no conoce, y quizás no es quien dice ser. En ese sentido, el gobierno conoce perfectamente a todos sus civiles, y la llegada de alguien que no habían contemplado (migración) es algo que los desestabiliza, pues no saben nada de esa persona. Es por eso que el papel de Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) es tan importante para el desenlace de la película, y para nosotros, con ella queda representado el papel de los migrantes.
The chef knows perfectly well who his diners will be and has planned the dinner according to them, however, there is one specific woman he does not know, and maybe she is not who she says she is. In that sense, the government knows perfectly well all its civilians, and the arrival of someone they had not contemplated (migration) is something that destabilizes them, since they know nothing about that person. That is why the role of Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) is so important for the outcome of the film, and for us, with her the role of migrants is represented.
“El menú” hace muchos guiños a la economía, política y realidad social en EEUU. Todo queda representado a través de comida y metáforas, pero desde el comienzo el chef nos ha dicho que no solo comamos, al contrario, que degustemos, separemos y analicemos todo lo que se nos presenta, y en parte eso hemos hecho con esta película. Realmente nos hemos entretenido los últimos días hablando sobre ella.
"The Menu" makes many nods to the economy, politics and social reality in the United States. Everything is represented through food and metaphors, but from the beginning the chef has told us not only to eat, on the contrary, to taste, separate and analyze everything that is presented to us, and in part that is what we have done with this film. We have really entertained ourselves the last few days talking about it.
“El menú” puede ser todo y nada a la vez, dependiendo desde qué perspectiva la queramos ver. Podemos consumirla tal cual como lo que es, o quizás pensar y hacer algunas elucubraciones sobre que nos estaría queriendo transmitir el director en cada escena. Es una película bizarra, mezcla el terror, el drama y la comedia, comete algunos errores y definitivamente no es el mayor logro del 2022, sin embargo, da muchísimo material para discutirla y pensarla. "The Menu" can be everything and nothing at the same time, depending on what perspective we want to see it from. We can consume it for what it is, or perhaps think and make some lucubrations about what the director is trying to convey in each scene. It is a bizarre film, it mixes horror, drama and comedy, it makes some mistakes and it is definitely not the greatest achievement of 2022, however, it gives a lot of material to discuss and think about.
