A psychological thriller with a twist Un thriller psicológico con un toque diferente
This was one of the movies that gave us something to talk about at the end of last year and since I saw it on the billboard I wanted to see it. Once again, without knowing what the plot was about, I was interested in the film because of the poster, a comment I heard from someone about the film being a thriller and of course because there are very good actors and actresses. Finally, this week, I got to see it.
Esta fue una de las películas que dio de qué hablar a finales del año pasado y desde que la vi en cartelera quise verla. Una vez más, sin saber de qué iba la trama me interesó el film por el poster, un comentario que le oí a alguien sobre que la cinta era un thriller y por supuesto porque hay muy buenos actores y actrices. Finalmente, esta semana, pude verla.
The Menu, directed by Mark Mylod and written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy is a film that combines various genres, Comedy, Psychological Thriller, Horror, Cooking, among others; if anything, within that mania that we as a society have of labeling everything, if there is something called a gastronomic thriller, this would be a good example of it. The story begins with a couple, Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) and Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy), who travel to an island where one of the most exclusive restaurants in existence is located. So exclusive that in addition to having to pay an exorbitant amount for dinner, this unique culinary experience will only be shared by ten other diners for a total of twelve. Tyler is excited, he idolizes chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) who is quite a celebrity for his avant-garde cuisine and for creating different menus that are a complete sensory experience. But what at first seems like an elitist dinner and a demonstration of ego and power, will become something unprecedented in world gastronomy.
The Menu, dirigida por Mark Mylod y escrita por Seth Reiss y Will Tracy es una película que combina diversos géneros, Comedia, Thriller psicológico, Terror, Cocina, entre otros; si acaso, dentro de esa manía que tenemos como sociedad de etiquetarlo todo, si existe algo llamado thriller gastronómico, este sería un buen ejemplo de ello. La historia inicia con una pareja, Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) y Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy), que viaja a una isla en donde se encuentra ubicado uno de los restaurantes más exclusivos que existen. Tan exclusivo que además de tener que pagar una cantidad exorbitante por la cena, esa experiencia culinaria única será compartida solamente por otros diez comensales para un total de doce. Tyler está emocionado, idolatra al chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) quien es toda una celebridad por lo vanguardista de su cocina y por elaborar diferentes menús que son una experiencia sensorial completa. Pero lo que al inicio parece una cena elitista y una demostración de ego y poder, se convertirá en algo sin precedentes en la gastronomía mundial.
I mentioned that the movie has some comedy in it. I clarify: dark comedy. Very dark. Because it's mainly a thriller with dramatic and horror elements that increase as dinner progresses and as we taste each of the dishes. The first dishes begin with a mixture of island flavors and advanced cooking techniques; the third seems like a joke (it's not) and from the fourth plate, everything screwed up.
Mencioné que la película tiene algo de comedia. Aclaro: comedia negra. Muy negra. Porque principalmente es un thriller con elementos dramáticos y de terror que se van acrecentando a medida que avanza la cena y que vamos probando cada uno de los platos. Los primeros platos empiezan con una mezcla de sabores propios de la isla y técnicas de cocina avanzada; el tercero parece un chiste (no lo es) y a partir del cuarto plato, como dicen mis amigos mexicanos "ya valió madres".
Once the film is finished it's easy to see why the critics have been so divided, but I think everyone will agree that the proposition of the story is risky - just like the chef's menu - and you have to recognize that value, that share that comes out of the conventional and that mixture of emotions that it awakens. It starts like a normal movie, then it has funny moments, other uncomfortable ones and the note gets worse as it progresses, there is also social criticism, there is reflection on art in general (not only on cuisine) on the purpose of life and we realize two important things: the first is that everything has been perfectly planned, or almost; and the second is that nothing is what it seems. These elegant, wealthy, famous people who come to dinner each hide a secret (or several) and when we discover them we feel sadness, disgust, anger, impotence, injustice perhaps, we feel cheated just like some of the characters, shocked by some scenes and although the story is strange, if a movie manages to make us feel something, I would say that it's on the right track.
Una vez terminada la película es fácil ver por qué la crítica ha estado tan dividida, pero creo que todos coincidirán en que la propuesta de la historia es arriesgada - igual que el menú del chef - y hay que reconocer ese valor, esa cuota que se sale de lo convencional y esa mezcla de emociones que despierta. Comienza como una película normal, luego tiene momentos cómicos, otros incómodos y la nota se va agravando a medida que avanza, también hay crítica social, se reflexiona sobre el arte en general (no sólo sobre la cocina) sobre el propósito de la vida y nos damos cuenta de dos cosas impostantes: la primera es que todo ha sido perfectamente planificado, o casi; y la segunda es que nada es lo que parece. Estas personas elegantes, adineradas, famosas que acuden a cenar esconden cada uno un secreto (o varios) y al descubrirlos sentimos tristeza, asco, rabia, impotencia, injusticia quizás, nos sentimos engañados igual que algunos de los personajes, conmocionados con algunas escenas y aunque la historia sea rara si una película logra hacernos sentir algo yo diría que va por buen camino.
I really liked that the protagonist was Margot because she is the disturbing item on the night's menu. For reasons revealed in the film, Margot is the only person who wasn't supposed to be there that night, and that small alteration changes the course of some events.
Me gustó mucho que la protagonista fuese Margot porque es el elemento perturbador en el menú de la noche. Por razones que se revelan en el film, Margot es la única persona que no se suponía que estaría allí esa noche y esa pequeña alteración cambia el curso de algunos acontecimientos.
The following judgment may not be very objective (because I love her) but I think Anya Taylor-Joy is the best in the movie. I think his character is the closest to the viewers and I liked that opposition she makes to the Chef. Also, even though I've seen several not-so-great movies that she's in, her acting is always up to par and The Menu is no exception because she really does deliver. About the end I prefer not to say anything and that everyone sees the film and judges it according to their tastes and criteria. As the title of the film suggests, there are a number of dishes, there are special ingredients and elaborate techniques, but despite the fact that the dinner takes place in a restaurant and that everything revolves around this exclusive chef and his art, I would say that with so much to think and reflect on, the food itself is really the least of it, have any of you seen it? Quizás el siguiente juicio no sea muy objetivo (porque la amo) pero creo que Anya Taylor-Joy es lo mejor de la película. Creo que su personaje es el más cercano a los espectadores y me gustó esa oposición que hace al Chef. Además, aunque he visto varias películas no tan buenas en las que ella aparece, su actuación siempre está a la altura y The Menu no es la excepción porque en verdad lo hace excelente. Sobre el final prefiero no decir nada y que cada quien vea la película y la juzgue según sus gustos y criterios. Tal como el título de la película lo sugiere sí hay una serie de platos, hay ingredientes especiales y técnicas rebuscadas, pero a pesar de que la cena se celebra en un restaurant y de que todo gira en torno a este exclusivo chef y a su arte, yo diría que con tanto que da para pensar y relfexionar, realmente la comida en sí es lo de menos, ¿alguno de ustedes la ha visto?
