I always encourage myself to participate in the CineTV contests, but I almost never manage to do it, I admire those audacious minds that always find great movies to link with the contest of the week, my mind that often raves, found a movie, I do not know if it is appropriate, but I still want to talk about it, because winter is present only in a conceptual way, like everything in this movie.
I leave here the link to the contest, in case you have bold minds as well: https://peakd.com/hive-121744/@cinetv/cine-tv-contest-43-a-movie-that-represents-winter.

The film that represents winter and that I chose to talk about it today is The Menu, everyone will think that this film is not entirely appropriate, because it does not take place during these times of the year where snow invades life, all the action is located on an island where there is also a very exclusive restaurant, where the wealthy go to take a few hours to enjoy the extravagant and quoted gastronomic inventions of the acclaimed chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) who brings true art to his culinary creations.
Winter is expressed in a rather conceptual and symbolic way, as the dishes, being seafood, with seafood and fish roe (perhaps caviar) are subjected to the high temperatures with a bath of liquid nitrogen and then the reverse process is applied with the use of an apparatus called Pacojet, which gives the dishes a winter frost that adds a lot of aesthetics (also I imagine a great taste) to each dish on the menu, because as one of the diners is heard to say, the chef is obsessed with snow and winter.
On the internet there are many memes of the presentation of dishes in hipster restaurants, you know, pink chocolate or roast beef on construction shovels, here this reaches the next level, if we understand the culinary fact as an artistic expression that starts from a conceptual fact, an idea, we find in The Menu the most crazy salmon extravagances presented to these diners. An eccentricity suitable only for bulging wallets.
And so begins this crazy movie, where 12 diners are invited to an exquisite tasting at the exclusive Hawthorne restaurant, at $1250 per person. The whole atmosphere surrounding these guests becomes rarer as the plot progresses, many begin to feel uncomfortable with the monologues of the chef who tries to explain to his guests the conceptual origin of each dish, until the tension grows to the point of unleashing all the events, sorry, I will not give you more clues, I do not like to make spoilers.
I always like to share the synopsis of Filmaffinity, but this time I will not do it because I consider it misleading advertising, and is that it is advancing a fact that is focused on a lie, or on the assumption we make when we start watching the movie.
The main protagonist is the great Ralph Fienes, who with that haughty look still reminds us of Lord Voldemort and my mind plays me dirty by erasing the nose of his features, Fienes looks impressive in his role as a chef used to keep his team of cooks as obedient as if he were a lieutenant and his team his platoon. A platoon that reveres him as the culinary artist he is.
Unfortunately the film's progress has gone off the rails more than it has for me. I share it all the same, don't point fingers at me for withholding evidence.
The entire exquisite tasting of these sophisticated dishes takes place as if it were a theatrical representation, while each and every one of those who do not appreciate this art, or despise it, falls, as a clear criticism of the society of "foodies" rich, snooty who only attend fashionable places to eat in order to boast of this act of consumption, which not many, in fact most are forbidden to attend.
Each of the characters attending this tasting represents every human facet (among these rich people, of course) who have not only stopped appreciating the creativity of the act of cooking, but rather attend as a way to feel powerful, wealthy, important; there are also those who feel they have the right to end lives, jobs and entire restaurants with their negative reviews as they believe they are superior to the chefs who serve them.
Then our chef has a surprise for them. With this film we also come to understand how true fanatics act before their stars, seeming alienated at every step of their lives, and seeing their obsessions as the only ones allowed and valid in life. Each character leaves us a lesson and more than one will be left in their place as they see themselves reflected.
A critique of contemporary society, so contemporary that even the Covid is mentioned, and that not enough time has passed for the pandemic experience to be processed. The Menu is a film of black humor that will not leave us indifferent, for those who love cooking it is very interesting to see how they conceptualize the dishes, and from that idea comes the concept of the presentation of the dishes, and not the other way around.
It has given me the tools to make fun of places that serve food on toys or on sandals just to look more sophisticated than the rest, and that do not attend to the concept of the place, if they have one. A very educational film, too bad that to do so it has to leave us with our mouths open.
