MOVIE REVIEW: The Green Mile - 1999

Synopsis:

Prison jailer Paul Edgecomb has an unusual and moving relationship with inmate John Coffey convicted of brutally killing two nine-year-old twins, and is on the corridor in the death of a southern prison. John, a huge black man, he has the size and strength to kill anyone, but his behavior is completely opposite to his physical appearance, because he is simple, naive and terrified of the dark. Over time, the jailer notices that he has a supernatural gift and learns that sometimes miracles happen in the most unexpected places possible.

A powerful film, no one is able to remain indifferent, because it touches everyone, and reaches our soul. The film renders that the prisoner has a magical gift that is both mysterious and miraculous.

It is a type of film that is difficult to classify or give a descriptive label, however, some critics define it as a drama, others as a mystery feature, and others even consider it to be in the genre of science fiction.

The film is an adaptation of Stephen King's book 'Death Row'. The protagonist of the plot is a prison officer named Paul Edgecomb, who is responsible for the surveillance and administration of death row, in Louisiana prison.

Throughout history, John catches Paul's attention, because as he goes about his daily life, he gradually shows how special he is, but thanks to his powerful gift. And that despite John entering death row for an alleged murder, the prisoner shows the sensitivity, innocence and illusion of a boy, who does not match his physique.

John is able to expel the evil that each person has inside and, little by little, makes this gift available to everyone around him and offers his gift to heal. His gift makes him a being who instinctively does only good, and he always puts himself at the service of those in need, regardless of whether these people were kind to him or not.

However, the film shows us a sad lesson, despite John making a miracle happen because, he has a powerful force of nature whose fuel is love, he does not end well, because he is executed in the electric chair. And at a given moment, he himself expresses that this is his wish.
