The Green Mile Is More Than Just A Prison Movie. It Is A Powerful Story About Humanity, Compassion, And Justice. Nearly Three Decades Later, It Remains One Of The Greatest Stephen King Adaptations Ever Made.
Some movies entertain you while you’re watching them, and then there are movies that stay with you long after they end. The Green Mile falls firmly into the second category for me. Released in 1999, this emotional drama combines elements of fantasy, mystery, and tragedy to create a film that is both heartbreaking and unforgettable.
The movie was directed by Frank Darabont, who had already proven his talent with another Stephen King adaptation, The Shawshank Redemption. Darabont understood how to take King’s storytelling and translate it to the screen without losing the emotional depth that made the original story so compelling. His direction is patient and deliberate, allowing viewers to become fully invested in the characters and their journeys.
Tom Hanks stars as Paul Edgecomb, the head guard on death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary during the 1930s. Hanks delivers a strong and believable performance as a man trying to do the right thing while working within a flawed system. His character serves as the audience’s guide through the events that unfold on the prison’s death row, known as “The Green Mile.”
The standout performance comes from Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey. Coffey is a massive inmate sentenced to death for the murder of two young girls. Despite his intimidating appearance, he possesses a gentle nature and a kindness that immediately sets him apart from the other prisoners.
The supporting cast is excellent as well. David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, James Cromwell, Barry Pepper, Michael Jeter, Doug Hutchison, and Sam Rockwell all contribute memorable performances. Doug Hutchison is especially effective as Percy Wetmore, one of the most unpleasant and cruel characters in the entire film.
As the story progresses, Paul and the other guards begin to notice that John Coffey is unlike anyone they have ever met. He appears to possess extraordinary healing abilities and a supernatural gift that cannot easily be explained. These discoveries force the guards to question everything they believe about justice, guilt, and innocence.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is the relationship between Paul and John. Their friendship develops naturally throughout the story and becomes the emotional core of the movie. Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan share incredible chemistry, making every scene between them feel genuine and heartfelt.
The movie also does an excellent job building emotional investment in nearly every character. By the time the story reaches its final act, viewers have spent enough time with these people that their triumphs and tragedies carry real weight. Few films manage to create such strong emotional connections.
Another reason the film works so well is its pacing. At just over three hours long, it could have easily felt bloated or overly drawn out. Instead, the story unfolds at exactly the right speed, giving important moments room to breathe while keeping the audience engaged from beginning to end.
Visually, The Green Mile captures the atmosphere of a 1930s prison perfectly. The setting feels authentic and lived-in, helping immerse viewers in the world of Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Combined with Thomas Newman’s beautiful musical score, the film creates an emotional experience that is difficult to forget.
The movie explores several important themes, including compassion, redemption, prejudice, faith, and the imperfections of the justice system. These themes are woven naturally into the story rather than feeling forced, which makes their impact even stronger.
What I appreciate most about The Green Mile is that it never relies solely on its supernatural elements. At its heart, this is a story about people. It is about kindness, cruelty, sacrifice, and the difficult choices that individuals face when confronted with moral dilemmas.
There are very few movies that can make me laugh, smile, feel hopeful, and then completely break my heart by the end. The Green Mile accomplishes all of those things. Its emotional moments are earned, not manipulated, which is one reason they remain so effective even after multiple viewings.
For me, The Green Mile is simply a great film. The cast is outstanding, Frank Darabont’s direction is excellent, and the story delivers an emotional punch that few movies can match. More than twenty-five years after its release, it remains one of the most powerful and memorable films I have ever seen.
›THE GREEN MILE – A Movie That Hits You Right in the Heart90@johnchimaa188408d
If you’re someone who enjoys emotional stories that leave a lasting impression, The Green Mile is a film you absolutely need to see. It’s not loud or fast-paced like most blockbusters. Instead, it slowly pulls you in with a story that’s touching, mysterious, and honestly… pretty unforgettable. I didn’t expect it to stay in my head the way it did, but here we are.
The Storyline
So, the story is told through the eyes of Paul Edgecomb a kind-hearted prison guard who works on death row during the 1930s. His job? Making sure everything runs smoothly until an inmate walks “the green mile” which is basically the path to the electric chair.
One day, a new prisoner comes in: John Coffey. He’s huge, quiet, and looks scary at first glance. But from the moment he speaks, you realize there’s something really different about him and I don’t just mean his size.
The Plot
At first, it feels like just another prison story. But then things start getting strange in a good way. John Coffey was convicted for a horrible crime, but Paul starts to wonder if he’s even guilty. Why? Because this man seems more gentle than dangerous… and then there’s the small fact that he can do things no human should be able to do.
As the movie unfolds, it becomes clear that The Green Mile isn’t just about prisons or criminals. It’s about people and what happens when we choose to really look at someone instead of judging them. It’s emotional, magical, and heavy all at once.
A Man Like No Other
John Coffey is the kind of character you don’t forget. He’s big and strong but acts like a little kid kind, soft-spoken, and full of emotion. You can feel that he’s carrying some deep pain, and watching him just makes your heart ache. Michael Clarke Duncan did an amazing job with the role. I’m not even joking you feel every word he says.
Yes, this movie will mess with your feelings, but it’s not just sadness for the sake of being sad. It shows what happens when good people try to do the right thing in a world that isn’t always fair. There are moments of hope, moments of kindness, and even a bit of supernatural mystery that makes the story feel magical in the middle of all the darkness.
Some scenes hit so hard, you’ll just sit there staring at the screen. And the ending? Prepare yourself. It’s emotional, beautiful, and painful all at once.
Why You Should Watch It
If you want a movie that actually means something, The Green Mile is it. It’s not full of explosions or crazy stunts. Instead, it’s full of heart, questions about life and justice, and characters that feel so real you’ll forget they’re acting.
I’d give The Green Mile a solid 9 out of 10. It’s not the kind of movie you forget in a week. It sticks with you and sometimes, that’s exactly what a great movie should do.
Take your time with this one. It’s long, but trust me it’s worth every second.
I think I have at least a month worth of movies collected from Instagram and after The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, The Green Mile, a movie based off of Stephen King's Story was next.
I know Stephen King to be a wonderful, genius author even though I'm not a particular fan of the horror genre, yet this movie wasn't horror so I'll be alright... Or so I thought.

### Plot
> Paul Edgecombs is the head guard of Cell Block E of Cold Mountain Penitentiary and the big boss in charge of the green mile.
Paul has overseen the execution of many a convicts for a long time, but the year 1935 is one that's forever etched in his mind.
The year that John Coffey walked the green mile.

I'll have to say, when I downloaded and began the movie, the 3hrs run time really gave me second thoughts but the reviews were good and Instagram hadn't failed me before so I took a deep breath and dove right in.

The story was amazing. A simple plot filled with easy to remember characters who do hard to forget things.
The casting for these characters made them even more amazing, Tom Hanks ate his role, like it's not easy to love a white Prison guard in a movie but he made it seem so easy.

I loved the character of Edgecombs, a man who understands that they being prisoners on death row doesn't make them less human.
In such times when crimes could be incredibly exaggerated and the penalties are usually more than needed, it was clear that some of their verdict's were fishy.

We also get to see it from the eyes of the prisoners. How they see and interact with Edgecombs makes you realize that they may be killers, mad men, thieves or innocent, but when given respect you'll gain respect, trust and a bond.
They trusted this man enough to be killed by his hand and that's one of the strongest bits of the movie.

This movie doesn't have one main antagonist, some may argue that it's Billy The Kid, some may say that it's Percy Wetmore, yet in reality the antagonist is everyone, it's the entire human race, we're the horror of it all.

Explaining this bit would give a major spoiler so I wouldn't, but I do tell you to ready your heart and mind as you watch the movie.
Or do not and be like me hiding my sobs and cleaning my tears in the office.
This movie was beautiful, a lovely story portrayed by gifted actors, one that you are ensured to like.

Also known as Unexpected Miracles in Latin America, this 1999 film directed by Frank Darabont is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. The Green Mile is a somewhat strange fantasy story and drama which you should watch at least once in your life. In this post I tell you why✨

Sinopsis | Synopsis
It was Louisiana back in 1935. The United States was going through the Great Depression and black people did not have it easy at all in that society rotten by prejudice as well as so many other things. Paul Edgecomb is a prison guard, he works specifically in the Death Row area, yes, where those convicted of the worst acts spent their last days. And speaking of atrocious acts, one day a man condemned to the electric chair named John Coffey arrives, an impressively large, dark-skinned man who has apparently raped and murdered two little girls...
But John seems to be someone enigmatic to say the least, submissive, peaceful... A weird one. But even stranger are the things that happen since he arrives at that prison. Paul would witness everything...
Although the movie is not an exact copy of the book (which is honestly very difficult to achieve because of the things King writes about), the truth is that it remains quite faithful to the central point of the story, which is demonstrate a true story through fantasy. Although it contains quite disturbing elements, it is not a horror film. But it has to be pointed out from the beginning, there are issues that may be too raw to digest well. We are talking about prisoners who are accused of horrendous things, as well as condemned to a horrible end. That makes it not a "family friendly" movie, but it really conveys a powerful message, just like the book.
The story is intense since it is based on real cases that were honestly much worse. However, it conveys this message using fantasy that is only contrasted with drama. There is pain, injustice, helplessness, regret, cruelty, evil, empathy and the complete absence of it. Everything at once. The characters represent the moral differences that existed at that time and that can still be seen today. Sometimes the line between good and bad is incredibly blurry, so much so that we may not realize what is really happening.
The Green Mile is a magical and tragic story at the same time. It is a crude representation of the injustices that plague the world that is also demonstrated in a way that affects your feelings, since the protagonist is so immensely noble that after what happens you are left with tears in your eyes. Although it is not a film for everyone, those who enjoy or at least can see a strong story, this is without a doubt one of the ones I most recommend. It's explicit, it's tough, but it's incredibly good. As much for the story as for the actors and the production, this is one of the best films that exist.
The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most beloved film of 1990s. As the decade was nearing its end, it was all but inevitable that its authors would try to repeat its success, if not by direct sequel, at least by a film that uses some ingredients of its formula. That was The Green Mile, 1999 drama directed by Frank Darabont.
Like The Shawshank Redemption, the film is based on the literary work by Stephen King, in this particular case his 1996 eponymous novel. The plot begins in nursing home where elderly Paul Edgecomb (played by Dabbs Greer) remembers events that took place in 1935 Louisiana. Then he (played by Tom Hanks) was working as a guard in Cold Mountain state penitentiary and led the team of guards in charge of death row, prison section nicknamed “Green Mile”. Together with Brutus “Brutal” Howell (played by David Morse), Dean Stanton (played by Barry Pepper) and Harry Telwilliger (played by Jeffrey DeMunn) he takes great care that the condemned men spend their last days as peacefully and with more dignity as possible. Dark idyll of “Green Mile” is spoiled when they are given new guard Percy Whitmore (played by Tom Hutchinson), young man who got the job due to political connections and who reveals himself to be a cruel sadist who loves to humiliate and torture prisoners. Things change when new prisoner, a huge black man John Coffey (played by Michael Clarke Duncan), arrives to “Green Mile”. He is sentenced to death because he raped and killed two little white girls, but his cheerful nature and kindness he projects to anyone seems totally at odds with the crime he has committed. Even the experienced guards like Edgecomb and his colleagues begin to seriously doubt his guilt. It soon turns out that Coffey also has healing powers.
There are plenty of similarities between The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Both films are directed by Frank Darabont, both are based on King’s work, both have period setting, both have plot takes place in prison and both have characters that try to find hope, humanity and dignity in darkest of all places. The Green Mile added another important ingredient in the formula by casting Tom Hanks, most beloved of all Hollywood actors, who was obviously trying to get his third Oscar for Best Actor by playing character in this sentimental and heart-warming story that Academy voters tend to like. The Green Mile received four nominations including The Best Picture, but that didn’t include Hanks and Oscar-grabbing project, the film was a failure. That was, on the other hand, compensated by excellent results at box office, which could be attributed mostly to Hanks’ stellar power and reputation of Darabont’s previous film. The Shawshank Redemption, which had actually made most of its money on home video and post-Oscar distribution, was outperformed by The Green Mile at the box office. This achievement is even bigger, considering that 1999 film had running time of more than three hours.
However, inevitable comparisons of quality between the two films make The Green Mile look inferior. This has little to do with Darabont’s script, which very faithfully follows the novel. 1930s Southern prison setting could have made the film deal with some of the issues dear to Hollywood leftists’ hearts – institutional racism or death penalty – but Darabont remained focus on very simple and sentimental story that, by applying elements of supernatural fantasy, becomes a fairy tale. The audience, for example, is led to believe that prison guards dealing with most dangerous and desperate convicts would do such job in a manner that qualifies them to work as butlers. The Green Mile remains fairy tale despite occasional depiction of violence, few disturbing scenes or realistic depiction of protagonist’s issues with urinary infection. The real problem is Darabont’s tendency to be as faithful to King’s source as possible and he doesn’t want to leave anything out the film. But his editor Richard Francis-Bruce doesn’t do a good job and makes each of those scenes longer than they should, adding a lot to its running time and testing patience of many viewers.
What ultimately saves this film is the cast. Hanks played decent role, but he was overshadowed by small and formidable group of character actors that included mild-mannered David Morse and Gary Sinise in small but powerful cameo. Especially effective is Doug Hutchinson, actor until that time best known as monstrous shape-bending killer Eugene Tooms in The X-Files; here he plays another villain whose seemingly small pranks at first escalate into acts of monstrous cruelty. But the most memorable performance belongs to Michael Duncan Clarke, former bouncer whose impressive and menacing physique creates sharp and effective contrast to childlike nature and saintly deeds creates so much sympathy among the audience. Clarke who was nominated for Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, played the role of its career.
The Green Mile didn’t win Oscars, but it won many hearts and is likely to remain popular although it would always be overshadowed by The Shawshank Redemption.

If there is a mind behind the greatest adaptations that world cinema, especially Hollywood cinema, has produced in the last 50 years, we are undoubtedly referring to Stephen King. The best epithet for this genius is "master". The successes attributed to this privileged contemporary mind are almost infinite. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Frank Darabont and so on, a host of famous and renowned filmmakers have been inspired to make films that have changed the paradigms of cinema. This is the case of "The Green Mile", which (oh, surprise!) is an adaptation of the book of the same name written by King, is a film that closes a golden decade for cinema of excellence. And yes, I am referring to the glorious 1990s.
Now, I am aware that the original title of both the book and the film may not sound too familiar in the Spanish-speaking world, since it was reinterpreted as "Milagros Inesperados" or "El Pasillo de la Muerte". However, I believe that the symbolism behind whatever this film has been known as, is in the images themselves. As an audience, when watching this film you have the feeling that something dark is going to happen. Even more so if you haven't read the original work. For those of you who have read my previous reviews, and especially for those of you who follow my HIVE timeline, you will surely know that I am someone who has a very strong connection to this decade, the 90's. 10 golden years for all the arts, without a doubt.
In this sense, it is difficult for me to find examples as forceful as this film in order to be able to make a strong comparison. That is to say, within the plot of this film (The Green Mile) we witness the daily incidents that take place in one of the most psychologically exhausting jobs that can exist. And yes, being a death row guard can't be easy for any human being. To all this, let's add that the film is set in the years of the Great Depression in the United States. In other words, the 1930s. Full of racism everywhere, prejudice, and lots and lots of cruelty. Characteristics that, perhaps in a cynical way, we think we know, but which are beyond us.
The plot of this marvellous film lies in the plot inside the death row (known as "The Green Mile") and the relationship that the guards have with the inmates, who, as the place suggests, are really condemned to the most capital punishment of all: death by electrocution (electric chair). I mention this, because it is elementary to be able to empathise with the characters. If you analyse them properly, they are precisely criminals. And let's face it, they are not exactly the first ones that come to mind when we think of compassion, humanism and empathy, are they? Still, the power of both the book and the film lies in going beyond that.
The tool he employs is the famous "magical thinking". Widely used in literature of all times and also, as would be expected for this adaptation, in film. Three prisoners represent the prison population awaiting the fateful but expected end. Among them is a sympathetic Frenchman who is the reincarnation of innocence itself. In many ways, he seems like a Life is Beautiful alter ego of the main character (The Father). A guy who exudes affection, tenderness and gentleness, and who to top it all manages to tame a small but transcendental little mouse. He adopts it as a pet, with the consent of the guards, who unsuccessfully tried to catch it but could not.
On the other hand, there is the reincarnation of evil itself. A prisoner, masterfully played by actor Samuel Rockwell. Someone you loathe from the first moment you see him. As the dose of reality always catches up with fiction, this guy is the representation of the archetypal criminal, sadistic, paedophile and audaciously dangerous that usually comes to mind when we talk about death row inmates... However, the jewel in the crown is John, and yes, I mean John Coffey. A guy over six feet tall, broad and bulky, with a poor black complexion, and accused of raping and killing two blonde girls. It is simply mind-boggling the physical build of this person compared to any of the cast.
Life would be meaningless if it didn't include poetry in it. And so it is that we see John, huge, gigantic, frightening as he is, but who could justly and calmly be compared to a puppy. What he is strong and implacable in countenance, he is also wonderful, warm and enigmatic. And that is where the plot begins to unfold. Giving the witnesses of this story (i.e. the whole audience: ourselves) the tedious but enthralling task of deciphering the mysteries of this film. Let's not forget, we are talking about a film inspired entirely by the novel of the same name, written by Stephen King. Clearly, mystery, suspense and cliffhangers are guaranteed.
In addition to this, I must confess that I hate to review and at the same time reveal the intricacies and details of a film.
The idea is to arouse analysis and to evaluate both subjectively and objectively whatever it is that is being analysed. In this sense, it will give absolutely nothing to spoil the development of this film for you. Even less, to those, who might like these lines and who have no problem to dedicate a few minutes of their lives to let themselves be amazed as only the intelligent and powerful technique of the master of cinema Frank Darabont (also director of this film) could make it happen. Still, I only hope that you can find emotion and bits of humanism inside you. That is the only requirement to be able to understand the film.
But since this is not a fairy tale, where there is apparently so much good, there must obviously also be a counterpart; evil. And this is no exception. Remember this name "Percy". A guy who is the clinical definition of sadism, spoiled rottenness and a corrupt personality. One thing I really appreciate and love about this film is the power relations it shows. How the use of authority can be distorted through stigmas and human baseness itself. A single drop of power can (and does) make an individual believe that he or she is above everything and everyone. It is the ultimate (yet another) proof of what we all see everywhere we stop to evaluate.
Likewise, the execution of cruelty is another significant aspect of this film. Knowing that you are going to die a gruesome death is already a difficult physical and mental punishment to swallow; you don't need to be humiliated and ignored to realise that your end will be dire. Unfortunately, certain logical premises are often not followed to the letter and in the hardest moments that a human being has to go through, there are also malevolent aspects that are not often dealt with. In fact, on the contrary, they tend to be closer to taboo and prohibition than to study and understanding, which would be put to better use. Undoubtedly, evil by proxy is a fact and here, in this story, we will also witness it.
Lastly, I will now give my impressions of this film. I, who have read and seen many of King's works brought to the cinema, will choose The Green Mile as the best realisation of the American writer's ideas brought to the seventh art. As for the characters, I think the catharsis experienced in this film has a lot to thank the power of evil for. The "villains" in this film are simply sadistic, cruel and tough. That makes us quickly take a moral stand on their actions and feel strong emotions, very strong, I would say. There is no filler, no absurd and unnecessary dialogue. All the interactions we see are the product of an incredible logic, and that makes the film a classic and a masterpiece of art in general.

The soundtrack is extremely melancholic and mostly somewhat sad, this is a complete success since everything takes place within the death row of a prison being a completely depressive place and with a very palpable tense vibe, that is why the soundtrack must follow that marked line so as not to be dissonant at any time with the environment that the narrative tries to generate, That is why it is a complete success.

The construction of the world is quite ingenious, the scenarios are limited but despite this it squeezes them as much as possible so that they are properly coupled to what the plot deserves, in turn they have a well-denoted differentiation so that each of the different contexts transmits different sensations to the viewer and that they are consistent with the actions that are carried out in these. All this makes the setting despite being simple I achieved its mission by adapting correctly to what the narrative aspires to thus maintaining a congruence with the message.

The plot is extremely complete, he takes his time to develop and delve into all the elements he presents, making the development of these feel very plausible and give that feeling of having given everything they had. I have always said it and I keep it the films that dare to last more than 2 hours are a risky bet because they are a double-edged sword capable of having more time to explore what it presents but in turn can become tedious and annoying to see, the latter is not the case, Since at all times the tape is exposing problems and situations which makes the viewer care, always maintaining that melancholic tone of which the film is soaked.
I would say that the most remarkable thing is that it works in a good way the concept of "death row" because it does not seek to soften it in any way, in fact it makes us reflect on it and the suffering that this entails for both the executed and the executioners. I will highlight its narrative since it does not set an objective from the beginning, but waits for you to know its characters and their actions so that all this is what determines the goal to be achieved, the latter makes the public feel more trapped by everything to first know what is there and then establish what is going to be done, A rather pleasant success.

It is very easy to get attached and hate the characters, which implies that they have a good characterization, I would say that the most pleasant thing is the fact of how the characters interact with each other making the dynamics vary depending on the role they have in prison each of these. Not all the characters although if several of these present something different from their role: Paul is a husband, a friend, a guard and even a man suffering from an illness, John is a prisoner, an intimidating but harmless being and a character who suffers for the gift he has, Percy is a miserable, unpleasant, cowardly and useless being; So on, there are some that have better background than others, however in general all are moderately remarkable. I would say that what I found most pleasant is the change in the perspective of the guards regarding the way they see their work and the value they give in itself to a life, they are aware that some condemned deserve punishment, the latter does not mean that the suffering they have to go through is not terrible, Being something that haunts them even outside their workplace due to the agony they have to witness, that psychological touch is wonderful since it transmits through its characters that bitter and uncomfortable feeling that reflects the hard work they carry.
The Green Mile deserves the title that some have given it to be a cult film, evokes various emotions ranging from empathy to helplessness because an unfair situation takes place, however the most remarkable thing is the fact that it makes you become fond of the characters not because they are highly moral and wonderful supermen, but by the fact of being sensitive to what they live and can be affected by these being that they feel like people with whom you could meet in the day to day. It is for all this that I give it a rating of 6 stars out of 7, I honestly felt that the 3 hours passed very quickly since it manages to do the routine and fantasy combine very well to the point of being charming.

›[ENG/ESP] CineTV Contest: Tom Hank “The Green Mile” .@belena21281320d
Hello my dear friends readers, today I join the CineTV Contest #40, and with this publication I start in this excellent community, where the passionate about movies we can share and talk about our favorite movies and actors, and this time through this interesting contest, I will talk about "The Green Mile", a movie I've seen many times, which I consider one of the best of this great actor, and for me is one of my favorites.
It is worth mentioning that the first time I saw it, I did not understand it, I was only 10 to 11 years old, at that age is very little what we analyze, I remember watching it with my mother, which made me cry a lot, for the death of the man who healed people and when they crushed the poor Mr. Jingles "the little mouse".
Some time later I saw it again on several occasions, here in Latin America we know it as "Unexpected Miracles", it was an adaptation of a novel by the famous writer "Stephen King", released in 1999; but I am not here to bring you its technical details, but to tell you a little about it through my words and what it makes me feel.
Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), was a guard at the prison The Green Mile, "hence the name of the film", a place where they took the prisoners sentenced to death, was where he met John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), who was one of the prisoners and accused of the death of two girls; Paul suffered from a strong urinary tract infection and one day an inmate arrives "which will have a very important role later", this in an oversight of the guards attacked them all, Paul gave him a strong blow where he has the infection and is very affected, John asks him to approach him, he takes him by his lower part and heals him, it is as if he absorbed the disease, but when that happened, the lights of the prison illuminated with more power and then John expelled through his mouth a kind of plague, which can be said to be everything bad that Paul had.
Paul after what happened and seeing how is John's personality, began to doubt his guilt, is when he decides to look for the lawyer who took his case, but this only tells him that there are no records and information about him, only his criminal record, he implies that he was a man who appeared out of nowhere just to make that ruthless act of murdering those girls and in the worst way, since he does believe that he is guilty, yet Paul still doubts, and as the days pass and gets to know John more, he begins to believe in his innocence.
There are two more characters that moved me, the first one was Mr. Jingles "a little mouse", whom the guards and prisoners respected and fed, the other one was Eduard, a very funny prisoner, I don't know what he was accused of but I think he redeemed himself. Jingles, to the point that he taught him circus tricks, "very tender those moments", until Percy arrived, a bad man "a ruthless guard" and trampled the poor little mouse, leaving him almost dead, but John would save him, doing the same thing he did with Paul; this scene played a lot with my emotions, from being happy to see how Mr. Jingles played, to being sad because he was almost killed, to being happy again because he was saved.
Shortly after the day of Eduard's sentence arrived, it was a very emotional moment, since he was not worried about his death, but that his dear friend Mr. Jingles would be unprotected, the guards made him believe that they would take him to "Villa Mouse" where he would continue doing his circus tricks and that reassured him; but the one in charge of his death in the electric chair, was the merciless Percy, who did not put the wet sponge on his head, making his death slower and more painful; At that moment I hated him very much, I wanted bad things to happen to him, so that he would pay for so much cruelty, how could he be so bad, I said to myself "how unfair that good men like John and Eduard have to die, knowing that there was the possibility that they were innocent, because of how they were, I felt no evil in them, and men as ruthless as Percy was the one who would impart justice"; what a situation so out of place.
John does his last act of kindness "miracle " with the Warden's wife, who has cancer, Paul decides to secretly take him to the Warden's house, to help the poor woman who is dying, but when they are about to leave, the prisoner who hurt Paul earlier, grabs John by the arm, and senses through him a lot of evil; when leaving the prison we see a very naive and happy John, enjoying everything he sees, when he arrives to his destination, he cures the woman, eradicating completely the cancer, but he could not expel that evil through his mouth as it happened with Paul and Mr. Jingle. Jingle, at first I thought he couldn't get that out of him, but then thinking about it a little better, I think he was struggling not to expel it, maybe he had a purpose for so much evil, and so it was; When they arrived back to the prison, John takes Percy "the evil guard" and transmits him everything he absorbed from the Warden's woman; Percy goes into a strange trance and approaches the prisoner that John perceived so much evil, and shot him, killing him on the spot.
Following this, Paul, disconcerted with what happened, approaches John, and John tells him that he punished the bad men, takes him by the hand and tells him why he did it, it is where Paul sees that the real murderer of the girls was that man full of evil, he also punished Percy for all the damage he was doing, after what happened, Percy out of his mind, is hospitalized in a mental hospital.
Paul told John that they could let him escape, that he did not deserve to die, to which he replies that he was tired of seeing and feeling so much evil in men, Paul replies saying that "when the day of judgment comes, he will not know what to answer when GOD asks him why he did not save one of his miracles", John tells him that he will tell him that he did something good"; they fulfill his last wish which is to see for the first and only time a movie.
The day of his death arrived, he feels and sees a lot of hatred in the people who are there to witness what is going to happen, he asks them not to put the hood on him because of his fear of the dark, all the guards with a broken heart, with tears in their eyes say goodbye to Juan and execute the sentence.
Many years later we see Paul already old, going to a cabin to visit our little friend Mr. Jingles, who to our surprise was still alive, but how could this be, Paul says that in a way after John cured them, he transmitted them a little of his gift, because how can we explain that he is already 108 years old and feels very well, and Mr. Jingles has an age that no other mouse has ever reached in history.
Thus ends the film friends, in a great production, which makes us feel so many emotions, it is a well told story, where we are shown how far the wickedness of men can reach, but despite that, there is goodness in other people who see with the eyes of the heart, which teach us that we should not judge without knowing, to give second chances, as long as they deserve it, that even having so much injustice, still betting on doing things right.
My dear friends this was all, I hope you liked it, if I made a mistake, here I am to read you, and learn more every day.
I love you; see you next time!!!

I think most of you might have watched The Green Mile already. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors. 'Forrest Gump' and 'The Terminal' are some of his best works. You know the emotions I felt watching 'The Terminal' got reminded after watching today's one. Ah, that emotional feeling on watching this person, well for today I was sad for another character too. Will be discussing that later.
The Green Mile is an American Drama directed by Frank Darabont and based on a novel written by Stephen King in 1996 the movie is from 1999.
In the beginning, Tom Hanks in his old age suffers from something from his past, a memory, which he starts to describe to one of his companions, and that story is our film, I mean the root story which takes us back to 1935 when Paul, I mean our Tom was in charge of a prison where prisoners with death sentences are sent and then executed under his supervision. This job is already so pathetic and emotional, no matter whether those are criminals or not but after a time this type of work usually makes people suffer a lot.
So one day, a big guy named John Coffey was brought there. Maybe he is sized big with heavy muscles but the character and his expressions were too innocent and emotional. From the beginning, his expressions and dialogues would make you feel that something is wrong, he is not the guy to be sentenced. And the whole 3 hours runtime kept moving, with a heart-touching story where you will be feeling guilty about why this should have been ended like this. We could have portrayed a happy ending, spoilers? No, won't affect much because there is much more to enjoy, much more dialogues that would leave you thinking twice, and some facts that anyone would agree upon.
Well, this is not just about Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan(Coffey), there are several more characters to be aimed at, to clap on, to get amazed with their performance. Characters like Percy led me to curse him for what he did to Del. Also the psycho character Wild Bill, sometimes his actions would make you laugh too loud to keep down as I did, and sometimes the angry hulk wants to come out on knowing his deeds.
In our life, some decisions are really too big to carry out, even after knowing the step you're gonna take is wrong you must take and bear the results throughout the rest of your life. This long runtime won't bother you even for a minute once you dive into the story. Dialogues that would make you feel like, "Yes, this is so true, I can feel it."
'I guess sometimes the past just catches up with you, whether you want it to or not.' - Old Paul Edgecomb
and this one,
'You can't hide what's in your heart.' - John Coffey
You would find several quotes that would hit you hard, these make those scenes heavier to take in. There is much more to watch, enjoy, and realize from that film, even though the story is not just as much as I portrayed. In short, this was a great emotional package to digest. Without any doubt, this would secure a spot on my favorite movie list. Would love to rate this 9 out of 10 and this is a must-watch for everyone. Happy Watching!
›The Green Mile (Netflix Review)100@lizzyblue21632d
In continuing with my silently agreed upon tradition with this community to watch films made when I was too young to understand them :), I watched The Green Mile, a film which was released in 1999 on Netflix.
I can see how some of the pictures used to advertise this film could send the wrong idea about what this film is about. I know it did for me.
I saw a huge Michael Clarke Duncan surrounded by what I assumed to be bad cops and I asked myself if I truly was ready to watch another one of those racially tense films on a night I was planning to unwind. So, I skipped this film a few times until Netflix released the cover with Tom Hanks mostly in view. That's when I had a rethink. Tom Hanks to me is mild and by that I mean an empathetic actor and reader for the audio books he reads, so I knew something has to be off about my initial assumptions. I discovered I was right after reading what Netflix had to say about it:
A real turning on it's head moment, so I began to watch. Michael Clarke plays the role of John Coffey, a man who had been caught crying by the bodies of two little girls who they assumed he'd murdered. It did not help that he was saying through tears that he couldn't help it. They obviously concluded he was a man with demons who could not help murdering people. This is how he found himself taken to be executed at Cold Mountain Penitentiary where Tom Hanks who played the role of a kind supervisor with a bladder infection welcomed him.
There were other officers who also doubled as friends to Tom Hanks who were nice to the people they had to execute. Well, all but a man called Percy Wetmore who only came to work here because he was a sadist and wanted to watch a man die on the chair. He also only got the position in the first place because of his connections to the Governor's wife-his aunt.
As Netflix says, an inmate is discovered to posses mysterious powers and you probably have guessed by now, that it was John Coffey. He had powers to heal of a bladder infection, remove a tumor and transfer to another person if he wished(something he did to the unlucky and mean Percy) and he felt the evil in the world so deeply, it made him tired. He was tired too because he was misunderstood. What is a black man doing in a white dominated world where he can't recall where he came from or how he got his powers?
The real dilemma though came when Tom Hanks and the other officers discovered that he did not actually murder the girls he's been accused it. It was the another convict, a man named William "Wild Bill" Wharton who was also slated to have his time on the chair. With no proof of this crime except the psychic discernment in one of the scenes where John Coffey had physical contact with Wild Bill and could see him commit the crimes he'd been accused of as plain as day, there was nothing else or no one to bring this matter to. Also, John had had enough and wanted out of this big, bad world, and his only final wish was to watch Top Hat which they obliged.
This film was emotional because of the kindness of this man who only wanted to help. He was pure in heart and the fine contrast between his physical stature and his cowering inner self made me want to protect him so much. I loved the tenderness shown towards a mouse that he helped resurrect and who apparently gets to live forever because of his powers, I loved how Percy got what he deserved in the end for his cruelty(he once purposefully refused to soak the sponge used to conduct electricity for one of the prisoners on death row, just to watch him fry). However it really asks the question, what would you do if you had that power over a man's life?
In this film, Tom Hanks does his best. I don't think he could blame himself for allowing an innocent man die because he said himself that he would have left the door wide open and allowed John walk as far as he wanted with no questions asked. But John made his choice to die and that had to be respected.
For me, this story is unusual and that's one thing I love about looking for old movies to watch. The time feels magical and the stories feel nostalgic.
Hello friends! Today I am going to talk about and recommend The Green Mile, a movie that is one of my favorites, because of the theme it touches and the mixture of feelings and emotions it transmits throughout its filming, because it has a little bit of everything, realities, good and bad human feelings, magic, fun, wisdom, because in the end it gives a very nice message, perhaps that is why it is classified as a classic within the cinematic billboard.
The film was inspired by the novel by Stephen King, published in Spanish as La Milla Verde. This film was released in 1999, classified as an American drama and fantasy. The film is set in a prison, specifically on death row, where the most dangerous and fearsome prisoners of the time were in Louisiana in the 1930s.
The story is told by one of the jailers in charge, represented by Tom Hanks, as Paul Edgecomb, who narrates all the experiences inside the prison. As the film unfolds, he tells the story of a character, one could say magical, who arrives on death row because of the denunciation of the abuse and death of some beautiful girls. He demonstrates with his gentle character and gifts that he is a good person, even miraculous, as he participates in several events, where he heals and revives several characters.
Despite all this, this character represented by the actor Michael Clarke Duncan, (John Coffey) and that even, little by little he is demonstrating that he was not the cause of the murders he is accused of, he prefers to accept his fate tired of human evil, in order to free himself from what he has had to witness and see throughout his life, Only the only one who could see something through his visions was Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), and at that moment he transmitted some of his gift, which was to see the feelings of men.
This fact marked the life of Paul Edgecomb, because with the gift, also gave him a long life and it is through her, where he ends up telling a friend his life, his pains, his losses and how tired he is already, of everything. In the end, this film demonstrates the essence of human evil, its good and bad consequences and what these mark the life of a man, that there are very beautiful things, but we have to see them with the eyes of a child to understand and perceive them, without further ado I invite you to see it, I assure you it is worth sitting down to enjoy it.

Before reaching the electric chair, those sentenced to death walked along a long corridor whose floor was green, also known as the Green Mile. It is a dramatic film which describes the conditions of prisons in the USA in the years before the Second World War, and where the death sentence was carried out by an intense and violent electric discharge that went through the whole body from the head, killing the inmate. not without excruciating suffering. An absolutely cruel practice which was subsequently abolished.
The heartwarming story of Paul Edgecombe, a former death row guard, and inmate John Coffey, a big muscular, soft-hearted man sentenced to death for a double infanticide, but in reality not guilty, having been deceived and being very naive as to fail to prove otherwise.
The plot of the film denounces a practice that is still present today, cases of death row inmates without being certain of the crime and without any possibility of defending themselves, passively undergoing a lethal decision. Taken from the book by Stephen King, the last days before the sentence are narrated, describing the feelings that a condemned man feels, the reactions of the people around him, the harassment received by the other inmates. A story that made me grow a great anger. To think that sometimes we judge people without knowing them, the hypocrisy of a society that leaves no room for justifications when the sentence is passed.
Thomas Newman's magical soundtrack affects all the scenes of the film and establishes to create that feeling of internal malaise that takes you after you finish watching the film. The notes are delicate and touch your heart. Very long film about 3 hours but the intensity is such that you can see it without noticing the time that passes. There is a streak of science fiction in the plot that does not spoil the content, rather it helps to enhance the power of the message.
I do not recommend viewing for children because unfortunately there are bloody scenes, we are still talking about death row, and if we add to this also the presence of an electric chair, it is understandable why it is better not to see this film in the company of smaller. It is a film to watch, even for those who are not fond of the genre. In this story, Stephen King's brilliant pen was truly impressive.
›MOVIE REVIEW: The Green Mile - 1999@anacristinasilva1892d
It is an American film, of the genres drama, police and fantasy
Synopsis:
Prison jailer Paul Edgecomb has an unusual and moving relationship with inmate John Coffey convicted of brutally killing two nine-year-old twins, and is on the corridor in the death of a southern prison. John, a huge black man, he has the size and strength to kill anyone, but his behavior is completely opposite to his physical appearance, because he is simple, naive and terrified of the dark. Over time, the jailer notices that he has a supernatural gift and learns that sometimes miracles happen in the most unexpected places possible.
A powerful film, no one is able to remain indifferent, because it touches everyone, and reaches our soul. The film renders that the prisoner has a magical gift that is both mysterious and miraculous.
It is a type of film that is difficult to classify or give a descriptive label, however, some critics define it as a drama, others as a mystery feature, and others even consider it to be in the genre of science fiction.
The film is an adaptation of Stephen King's book 'Death Row'. The protagonist of the plot is a prison officer named Paul Edgecomb, who is responsible for the surveillance and administration of death row, in Louisiana prison.
Throughout history, John catches Paul's attention, because as he goes about his daily life, he gradually shows how special he is, but thanks to his powerful gift. And that despite John entering death row for an alleged murder, the prisoner shows the sensitivity, innocence and illusion of a boy, who does not match his physique.
John is able to expel the evil that each person has inside and, little by little, makes this gift available to everyone around him and offers his gift to heal. His gift makes him a being who instinctively does only good, and he always puts himself at the service of those in need, regardless of whether these people were kind to him or not.
However, the film shows us a sad lesson, despite John making a miracle happen because, he has a powerful force of nature whose fuel is love, he does not end well, because he is executed in the electric chair. And at a given moment, he himself expresses that this is his wish.
"To accept without questioning that each thing has a certain time to happen is to have Faith!"
›[ENG-ESP] Film Review Green Mile.
Hello friends of Hive, today I will talk about a film that is one of the masterpieces in my opinion of cinema in the last 25 years, the Green Mile. This film starred Tom Hanks as Paul Edgecomb and a top cast as Michael Clarke Duncan in the role of John Coffey; David Morse as Brutus Howell, finally Michael Jeter as Eduard Delacroix.
This film is based on the literary work "The Hall of Death", written by Stephen King, and adapted to the cinema in 1999 with the name of the Green Mile, under the direction of Frank Darabont. Stephen King was inspired to write this book by the case of George Stinney Jr, a boy convicted and executed in the electric chair for a simple and simple reason: to be black.
At just 14 years old, little George Stinney became the youngest citizen in the history of the United States to be executed by electric chair, after being convicted of the murder of two white girls.
Although the event itself is seen as incredible, the case becomes more horrendous and murky, when it is known decades later that the young man was found innocent of the crime.
It all began and at the same time ended in 1944, when the bodies of Mary Emma Thames and Betty June Binnicker, two girls of 8 and 11 years of age respectively, were found not only lifeless, but also brutal and bloody. Only one suspect: George, who had barely exchanged words hours before his deaths with the girls. The racism and hatred of the time allowed an innocent child to be convicted and killed for a crime that he did not commit.
The film, although inspired by these events, recounts in retrospect the life and experiences of Paul Edgecomb, a security guard on Block E or Final Mile, known as the Green Mile, in Cold Mountain Prison south of Los Angeles. United States in 1932.
There he meets Jhon Coffey, a tall and muscular African-American prisoner, accused of the rape and murder of two twins. Paul notices that Coffey is not the stereotypes of the other condemned to death and discovers that he is a special man with healing powers and that he is innocent of what they accuse him, but nothing he can do to save him from conviction. Paul receives part of his power from Coffey and despite being 104 years old, he does not age.
This film despite seeming its strong rigid plot at first, then its characters put on their side, feelings of love, tenderness, occultism, terror and sarcasm. The film mixes negative and positive feelings, which we human beings share. Some lessons from this film is that we should not label people before meeting them, unfortunately many do it perhaps out of habit or because that is their belief.
Coffey teaches us that life is a mirror to see our emotions and be able to solve them, he shows us that patience and hope must be the order of the day and that each one must be the best version of himself.
The Green Mile is a fantasy movie that has an iota of crime in it. It was totally portrayed as a story narrated by Paul (Tom Hanks).
As an officer in charge of the prison and prisoners, Paul and some other colleagues came in contact with Jonny Coffee, a giant but gentle man who had been sentence to death with the aid of electricity.
Coffee appears like one who everyone needs to be scared of but he wasn't actually one who was sacred of everyone. He has a mysterious power which I can use to heal people of their ailments.
Coffee healed Paul and made some of the healing processes in the presence of all the officers in the prison, at the bosses house where he healed his dying wife.
A man who had been sentence to death by the judge already but later found not guilty by the officers in prison, who can he be saved? He never wanted to run away even when Paul and the others were willing to help him with that. The story ended very tragic when Jonny finally died on the stage of sentence but only to find out that he had deposited so much life into Paul and a little Mouse that was found and partially killed in the prison.
Personal Observation.
Overtime, The Green Mile had been one of the greatest movies Tom Hanks has ever featured in, it's a cool but a very dynamic story, there are lots of undetailed iconic motives in the movie which would eventually always lead to so many questions, maybe not when the movie was actually released but now. For a movie released in the year 1999, the video quality was and is still great.
›The Green Mile (1999) by Frank Darabont (REVIEW)@lost1082654d
Beautiful movie, a pure classical movie with Tom Hanks in the leading role. The story is about a prison station where they keep the prisoners before their execution by using an electric chair.
There is not much to be reviewed here regarding the story, what fascinated me most is the acting and the sad execution. It may make you cry in some scenes because there are a lot of emotions in it.
This movie was nominated for four Oscars and I think that it would have been justified if this movie won all of those four Oscars because it deserves it. Currently sits on #19 place on IMDb's top 250 movies list.
›The Green Mile: one of King's best90@gooddream2948d
Since I have been covering a few Stephen King movies I may as well go ahead and look at one of the best ones. Is it just a coincidence that some of the better movies that are based on King novels actually are not horror movies? I'm not suggesting that all the horror ones are bad because that is not the case (think the Shining,) but this and Shawshank Redemption certainly have to be considered some of the best and a lot of the horror ones are pretty bad (think Maximum Overdrive.)
It is kind of important to go into this film not knowing anything about the twist, so I will do my best to not spoil it. The film starts with Paul Edgecomb (who is later played by Tom Hanks in the flashbacks that is most of the film) in a nursing home suddenly being overcome with grief during a film and then regaling a fellow patient with why it is that he has suddenly become so sad. He begins to tell about his days as a death row corrections officer and about the arrival of one particularly unusual convict, John Coffey.
Coffey is a giant of a man, which is evidenced by the suspension of the truck barely being able to support his weight. He also has childlike qualities such as being afraid of the dark and also thunderstorms. He is extremely gentle and very polite - which doesn't make much sense for a person on death row for rape and murder.
Anyway, I am not going to say any more than that because I don't want to give away the film. Let's just say that Michael Clarke Duncan did a fantastic job playing Coffey and the filming of "The Green Mile" must have been a bit difficult because he isn't nearly as tall in real life as he is portrayed in the film. Sets had to be designed to have a hidden raised platform any time he was in the scene.
Tom Hanks is great in this, Doug Hutchison (Percy) is great in this, Sam Rockwell is great in this... you know what, everyone is fantastic in this film and it was cast just perfectly. You will get emotional during this movie. It is extremely well told. It was nominated for a bunch of Academy awards but didn't win any of them. There must have been some stiff competition that year.
If you don't like this movie there is something wrong with you.
They helped him kill himself. And so is happening every day around the world.

There are many different professions and responsibilities around the world. But the most difficult of them are those that are directly related to the life and death of man. What is it like to realize that you have the fate of people in your hands? It's hard. The same we see in the film "The Green mile", where the protagonist Paul (Tom Hanks) works as a warden in prison and one of the perpetrators of the death penalty. It is he and his colleagues who lead the suicide bombers on their last journey from the chamber to the electric chair. This corridor, covered with green path, and is called on the local jargon "green miles."
People behave very differently in anticipation of death. Someone becomes reserved, someone produces out their anger on the whole world, knowing that worse is simply cannot be. But such prisoners as John Coffey (Michael Clark Duncan), Paul has never met. This huge African American is accused of rape and murder of two girls of twelve years. But despite his mighty stature, John did not like the man who could commit such a crime. And not because he yells for hours like other prisoners, because he's innocent. He's just kind. So much so that the common man it seems impossible and unrealistic.
This mighty prisoner has another very unusual feature — the Gift of healing. At the same time, John uses it almost all because it is full of love for all living things. After meeting John Coffey in the life of Paul a lot begins to go differently. And although the warden is convinced that John is not guilty of such a terrible and bloody crime, nothing can be done about it. His responsibilities included something other than trial and previsioning of judicial decisions. He's just their executor. What is most surprising, Coffey humbly accepts his sentence and regrets only that he did not have time to save those two girls after someone's bloody celebration.
Unmarked picture is just magical, no other word for it even. Well, how else can one explain the fact that, in principle, not dynamic film passes unnoticed for three hours? Of course, in the movie "the Green mile" the whole emphasis is not on dynamics, but the plot and the game's cast.
First, of course, affects himself Tom Hanks with his skill to convey to the audience his hero. Looking at his game, you begin to believe that he worked all his life in prison. And not just in prison, and accompanied the criminals on the electric chair. He is not overacting, no unnecessary pathos and theatrical movements, too compassionate face and what you can expect in these scenes. But nothing like this happens. Tom's hero is extremely collected, reserved and Executive. His face expresses almost nothing (especially sympathy). It becomes immediately clear that he has worked in this position for many years and all the emotions disappeared beyond necessity. Michael Clarke Duncan played quite well and sometimes even very good, which made him and Hanks great acting pair.
The painting was a success on all hundred. The Director is incredibly accurately conveys the novel by Stephen king, not crippling, as it is like in Hollywood, fact. Most importantly, the author tried to convey even minor details of the work, so that the film turned out to be holistic and interesting. Such a tape is not a pity to spend three hours of your time.
