I think most of you might have watched The Green Mile already. Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors. 'Forrest Gump' and 'The Terminal' are some of his best works. You know the emotions I felt watching 'The Terminal' got reminded after watching today's one. Ah, that emotional feeling on watching this person, well for today I was sad for another character too. Will be discussing that later.
The Green Mile is an American Drama directed by Frank Darabont and based on a novel written by Stephen King in 1996 the movie is from 1999.
In the beginning, Tom Hanks in his old age suffers from something from his past, a memory, which he starts to describe to one of his companions, and that story is our film, I mean the root story which takes us back to 1935 when Paul, I mean our Tom was in charge of a prison where prisoners with death sentences are sent and then executed under his supervision. This job is already so pathetic and emotional, no matter whether those are criminals or not but after a time this type of work usually makes people suffer a lot.
So one day, a big guy named John Coffey was brought there. Maybe he is sized big with heavy muscles but the character and his expressions were too innocent and emotional. From the beginning, his expressions and dialogues would make you feel that something is wrong, he is not the guy to be sentenced. And the whole 3 hours runtime kept moving, with a heart-touching story where you will be feeling guilty about why this should have been ended like this. We could have portrayed a happy ending, spoilers? No, won't affect much because there is much more to enjoy, much more dialogues that would leave you thinking twice, and some facts that anyone would agree upon.
Well, this is not just about Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan(Coffey), there are several more characters to be aimed at, to clap on, to get amazed with their performance. Characters like Percy led me to curse him for what he did to Del. Also the psycho character Wild Bill, sometimes his actions would make you laugh too loud to keep down as I did, and sometimes the angry hulk wants to come out on knowing his deeds.
In our life, some decisions are really too big to carry out, even after knowing the step you're gonna take is wrong you must take and bear the results throughout the rest of your life. This long runtime won't bother you even for a minute once you dive into the story. Dialogues that would make you feel like, "Yes, this is so true, I can feel it."
'I guess sometimes the past just catches up with you, whether you want it to or not.' - Old Paul Edgecomb
and this one,
'You can't hide what's in your heart.' - John Coffey
You would find several quotes that would hit you hard, these make those scenes heavier to take in. There is much more to watch, enjoy, and realize from that film, even though the story is not just as much as I portrayed. In short, this was a great emotional package to digest. Without any doubt, this would secure a spot on my favorite movie list. Would love to rate this 9 out of 10 and this is a must-watch for everyone. Happy Watching!
