Princess Tutu: a Mysterious Anime About Ballet and Love (Spoiler alert?)

Review by @artgirl · 3085d · of Princess Mononoke

Who would have thought a mere duck could be of any help to a Prince?

Summary:

Princess Tutu is a 2002 Japanese cartoon (anime) about a duck that became a young girl called Ahiru. An old man, Drosselmeyer, lurks mystically in time and in shadows and magically turned the duck into a human being.

As a duck, Ahiru wished she could make the sad Prince Mytho (Myuto) happy. When the duck became a girl, she went to the ballet school where the prince also studied. With a pendant, she transforms into Princess Tutu who is tasked to search for missing pieces of the Prince’s heart, while Fakir protects Mytho from almost everything, even from Rue (Ryu), the Prince’s fiancee.

In Ahiru’s search for the pieces of Mytho’s heart, she encounters a lot of people and learns much about love, life and ballet.

Review:

Ballet is an interesting dance form. Sure some people may see it as a beautiful and graceful type of dancing but others see it as too classy or boring and not the type of dance for the common people. It is a technical dance and requires a lot of patience, self-discipline and also the right body type. Who would have thought an anime fairy tale would make ballet look oh so easy, mysterious and fun to do?

Even if Princess Tutu is an anime about dancing the ballet, it isn’t all about ballet. The story focuses on love lost and found along the way. Also a story of courage, of facing your inner demons and how one overcomes selfish feelings because of caring for someone, be it a friend or classmate or something else.

This anime is best for pre-teens to teens in general or even young adults as it might not bore them like most shows meant for young ones do. The show has a number of male characters the guys can surely relate to: The Prince and his knight protector Fakir (Fakia).

The Prince is in search of someone he truly loves while Fakir is torn between love and duty. There are love triangles involved and it isn’t really boring because of the beautiful artwork, music, magic, action and the mystery involved in each episode.

What sets this anime apart is the unique and mysterious ballet-filled story line accompanied by beautiful classical-type music and the simple but amazing artwork. A lot of life lessons can be learned from this so even if it only has lesser episodes it still is worth watching.

In a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the highest, I give this anime a 5.

How about you? Have you seen this anime or not yet?

XOXO, @artgirl

@artgirl, From your very thoughtful description of the cartoon, it sounds like an Anime I would love. I have studied the art discipline of dance, and I believe it is a form and technique anyone can benefit from. A lot of athletes across the globe have benefitted from correctly placing ther alignment. I really want to see this film. Do you know if there is an English version? I am going to look it up. I love your reviews!! Do more!!!
