Supernatural while not a comedy, is at times really funny. There's moments like when Sam is cursed with bad luck and has some utterly ridiculous moments, the witty one-liners and bravado humour.
There's also a whole meta plot-line where someone is writing the story-line of the series as a books. Which lead to a convention happening and folks talking about the books as if the happenings were fiction within the setting.
The French Mistake takes the metaness to a whole nother level.
In this episode the brothers are sent into an alternate reality where they are actors on a show called supernatural. And we get to see the glorious humour that is the actors playing Sam and Dean playing Jared and Jensen. The characters speculate on why anyone would want to watch their shitty lives, and how the actors get paid way to much. There's also so many hilarious lines.
"Well we could cut the part where they talk soulfully while leaning on the impala"
"Than you can answer the hate mail."
Or
"I feel like this whole place is bad-touching me"
It's also cool to find out that characters who we see are some of the actual show characters. When a fight is rehearsed, it's the actual stunt doubles of Jared and Jensen and the driver in one scene is an actual driver.
Plus the contrast of Misha playing himself as the most ridiculous tweet addicted absurdity.
Episodes like this highlight both how a show not taking itself seriously all the time can make for a better show. It also raises questions like what is it that draws people to shows that are full of misery. Though really, supernatural is about overcoming misery, challenges, addiction and grief.
