"Solo: A Star Wars Story" by Ron Howard. Uncomplicated but cute story about the youth of the beloved hero "Star Wars"

Review by @aydogdy · 2837d · of Solo: A Star Wars Story

The film "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is a full-length spin-off of the saga of the same name. The film is about the adventures of a young Han Solo before meeting Luke Skywalker on the planet Tatooine. I think that director Ron Howard did not make any effort to make his picture stand out from the rest of the "Star Wars" films, but he was able to quite successfully integrate it into the film-based George Lucas.

"Han Solo" will definitely remain in the history of world cinema, at least as a curiosity: this is the first film that brought the Cannes Film Festival to the red carpet (there it was presented out of competition) not only people in mandatory tuxedos and evening dresses, but also soldiers -storm troopers in white helmets, and most importantly - Chewbacca. At the premiere, the picture was accepted happily: there were also "Star Wars" fans in Cannes.

A short summary is easy to write. This is not a "numbered episode," but an intermediate one, like "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," released two years ago. Therefore, the tasks are not so ambitious, the plot is more hermetic: we have an optional frivolous prequel about where the favorite character of the first "Star Wars" trilogy, the pilot adventurer Han Solo came from. The picture turned out declaratively old school, even the special effects seem to be stylized to the early 1980s. From there comes and the main character - a charming loser, not burdened by any high mission. It is clear that some viewers will be enchanted, others will protest, but there is little point in this: Disney Corporation does its job and with an iron hand leads "Star Wars" to where it was going. As they say in such cases, businesspersons from the movie "will collect their money."

There are some questions to the casting of two central participants of the project - the director and the leading actor. "Han Solo" was launched with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, an ingenious duet of directors who made an excellent "The LEGO Movie": it also featured the characters of "Star Wars", only collected from the bricks of the famous designer. Something went wrong, and eventually called Ron Howard. On account of the famous and successful director - a lot of bright pictures ("Splash", "Apollo 13", "A Beautiful Mind") and a number of worthless ones (including the film versions of Dan Brown "The Da Vinci Code" and "Inferno").

It is impossible to describe and identify the Howard style or intonation: it does not have them. Especially in such a project, where the finished aesthetics are laid at the DNA level, and even started with other directors. All Howard brought here are great actors who have worked with him before - in particular, Paul Bettany (as head of the interplanetary cartel), Woody Harrelson (a charismatic smuggler) and appearing in the Warwick Davis episode who once played his best role in fantasy Howard "Willow". On the other hand, Howard did not spoil the grooves. The film was released dynamic, folding, quality.

Alden Ehrenreich, 28, who has already starred in Woody Allen, Coen brothers and directors of the Coppola family, has all the necessary qualities to become a blockbuster hero. However, Han is familiar to us, he looks very remotely - he rather reminds Luke Skywalker. In general, regardless of the name, Chewbacca and "Millennium Falcon", there is no feeling that you are watching a movie about a character who will lead the princess Leia over time. Moreover, Han's romantic passion in this picture is different - Qi'ra childhood friend, played by the unrecognizable with dark hair, "mother of dragons" Emilia Clarke. Together with her, Han dreams of escaping from a slum planet, freeing herself from mafia bosses and finally starting an independent career. In a distant galaxy, this task is no more feasible than on the familiar Earth.

In the most offensive way, "Han Solo" finds itself in the same position as its hero. Han wants to emancipate from the big game in which he is destined to become a pawn, and, romantically embracing his girlfriend, fly to distant horizons. However, it turns out that the tributary of the cartel, the infantry of the Empire, the involuntary fighter of the rebel army. Therefore, the picture of Howard, trying to entertain the viewer with unintelligent cosmic adventures, has to be built into a complex mythology, where all places have long been occupied and each has its own irrevocable function. And if J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson are writing a new "Star Wars" story, gradually breaking the laws adopted in this universe, then Howard has no such room for maneuver (as probably there is no desire). He is assigned the background, which should lead the hero to a specific point: to the spaceport at Tatooine, where he is destined to meet Luke Skywalker.

Realizing this inevitability, the viewer will find something to be comforted. Still, here, fortunately, there are no annoying Jedi and no arguments about the Dark and Light side of the Force, and Han Solo himself still oscillates between light and darkness. However, there are many cute alien monsters, a powerful scene of a train robbery, the amazing Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and his feminist droid human rights activist. In addition, of course, Chewbacca, a lot of Chewbacca.
