Hi hive, today I come to talk about a movie that I honestly did not know, but these days my dad told me if I wanted to see it with him and obviously I agreed, and as it was going on I realized that it had some good and some not so good things to highlight about this movie, so that's why today I want to talk about Solo.

Solo is a Spanish film, based on a survival story, where a surfer in search of some incredible waves, ends up in an inaccessible cliff where he will have to survive for two days. Who will have to survive for two days, Solo is directed by Hugo Stuven and stars Alain Hernandez. So having already given a little context about this movie, let's get started!

    BBB17047-C16D-4B09-9DF7-48E67C5E61E1.jpeg

    imagen

First I always like to start talking about what I loved most about the film, obviously it's the story itself and whenever I see this kind of cases I find it genuinely incredible what these people have to go through and knowing that they are real life stories certainly give more weight to the film, so yes, I feel it's fascinating how this kind of films show these cases, and in a way even serve to create some awareness.

Alain Hernandez's acting is quite good and this is fundamental in this type of film, since the film focuses practically on a single character, it is important that the acting is good and convincing so that the film has a good rhythm and we can get 100% into the story, and this film fulfills that objective.

    8EE9229D-85EB-434B-85E7-26E6450DA2C4.jpeg

    imagen

I also want to point out that it is not a long movie, it lasts approximately 90 min and of course it makes sense because this kind of survival movies I feel it is not a very good idea to extend so much because I feel it could become a little uncomfortable, but with the pace of this movie the 90 min seems perfect to me.

Now, not everything is perfect and without a doubt I have to mention those aspects that didn't convince me and that detract a little from the value of the film itself. One of these aspects is that I feel that even though the story seems super interesting (as I already mentioned) I feel that they could have taken much more out of it, I don't know, maybe be more specific with what this person lived, I feel that sometimes they focused a lot on a love situation that didn't fit me very well (mostly in the context of the film).

    F49C8D86-21B3-4A93-8B8A-71B66B204849.webp

    imagen

It would have been interesting to show us how the character is developing hour by hour in a situation like this, really how he did to survive and things like that, but I feel that all this was touched in a general way, and it's not bad, but as I said I feel that there was much more material to show.

It is difficult to see this film and not compare it with 127 Hours since both have a similar objective and it is to expose these cases of survival, but I feel that 127 Hours is a much more complete film that manages to cover those "negative points" that you mentioned in this one, however it is also something subjective and perhaps there are people who liked the love story shown in this film and it is used as a motivation for the protagonist to survive, but I was not completely convinced.

In conclusion I feel that "solo" is an interesting movie to see to know this story, it has cool stuff, a good acting and a pretty complete direction, so overall it is a relatively good experience, it is not a work of art, but I feel that to some extent it manages to fulfill what it promises.

  2. SOLO (2018)@mofijul1447d

Solo is a Spanish survival movie released in 2018. This movie shows how far a man has to go for his own survival. You can learn a lot by watching this movie, because it reveals what happened in a person's real life. He has experienced many things in that journey and maybe you can understand how much you need to say when a person becomes helpless by watching this movie. This movie is based on true events. The way it has been shown in the movie I am giving you some details of that. In the first scene of the movie, the hero and heroine are sitting and having a conversation. The hero-heroine is brought to the place from where he had to fight to the death and survive.

    image.png source

The hero goes surfing in a new place with his friend in sea. The next day he goes surfing alone. But suddenly his foot slipped from the top of the hill. For that accident he went down the hill to the sea. The way he slipped and fell on the shore caused him severe pain. There are some scenes here that will make you wonder how important it is to use the brain, especially when you are about to face a danger. The hero was in so much pain that he could not move or walk at all. . He had no option to ask for help. Here the hero has played the role in a very beautiful way. The hero tries a lot to get any sort of help but he doesn't get any help from anywhere. It hurts me to see how helpless a person is when he is solo and tries to do things to help himself but the outcome turns to nothingness. The hero is in a lot of pain because of which he can't swim or walk even if he wants to. The cruel irony of fate!

    image.png source

In a word, you will be surprised to see the movie. He does not have a drop of water to drink or anything to eat. Seeing that there is no food will give a little energy to the body. How foolish people become when they face such dangers! Most people would think maybe they are very close to death and give up all hopes eventually. But there is a word called destiny. When death comes, nothing can stop it. If life is written in destiny, then he will live anyway. In one sentence, I have liked how the movie portrayed a hopeless and helpless person and his struggle to overcome all the obstacles. I hope you will watch the movie despite of the lower rating on IMDB and enjoy the movie.

  3. Solo - A Star Wars Story (2018): It deserves the hate?@richardalexis1706d

    https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/esstarwars/images/0/04/HanSoloPosterFinal.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180409022326 Source Separador.png

There are too many portions of the Star Wars universe about which it is easy to feel conflicted, among so many movies, video games, comics and series it is normal that for each person the franchise represents something different, this representation supposes a set that expectations that will never be fulfilled by all the franchise works.

    Captura de pantalla 2021-10-26 11.25.11.png

"Han Solo" is a particular case because it seems that almost all the fans hate it in unison and it is quite difficult to find people beyond ordinary criticism who appreciate it, for this very reason, after a couple of years completely ignoring it I decided to go back to see it and I felt that it would be interesting to reflect a little on why.

In short, "Han Solo: A Star Wars Story" was the second ambitious Star Wars Spin Off after Rogue One, a film dedicated exclusively to telling us the story of Han before the events of A New Hope. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Alden Ehrenreich, "Solo" is responsible for one of the biggest production hells of the last decade, although after several years shuffling actors and directors we finally got it in 2018.

    Captura de pantalla 2021-10-26 09.05.03.png

"Solo" works as a heist movie that seeks not only to develop the character of Han Solo but to show us a side of the Star Wars universe that is often ignored.

Although it is undeniable how exciting its premise is, it is also important to open up and see the project for what it is: a container with abundant fan service and few intentions to tell a story that as viewers we need to know.

Solo's greatest sin stems from the very structural problems that his existence entails: having to retroactively adjust Han's evolution as a character to provide a narrative arc that works within the confines of this film, as well as trying to establish events in his life that collide with what we already knew about him from the Skywalker Saga.

    Captura de pantalla 2021-10-26 11.01.10.png

The complaints were constant about its dark photography and although I feel that they are justified for me they do not ruin the film, It is only a work that by itself works quite well, it has good quality special effects, quite solid action sets and exciting moments with new characters ... although this level of decency crumbles when we evaluate it in contrast to its original films.

In more cynical terms it is a parade of winks and references that cares little about having thematic or emotional coherence, A Star Wars Story cannot help but wink and hug us because we know the original material even if it involves altering characters and events.

    Captura de pantalla 2021-10-26 09.00.21.png

This desire to please ends up taking us to an ironically uncomfortable place, where any positive aspect is overshadowed by its own problems. For example, we find a fairly well-chosen cast, with Alden mimicking Harrison Ford's mannerisms and speech without falling into the cartoonish, adding his own touch ... Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke do what they can with a script that occasionally lets them shine.

The question is: Is it hated without justification? Answering in a few words: No ... although Solo: A Star Wars Story is not a terrible film and it fulfills everything that is expected of it from a technical angle (and even artistic, if we put photography aside), no more is needed You have to visit the original trilogy to clearly observe all the mistakes that this spin-off made, although as an isolated product it works and it could be said that it is a good way to introduce new fans to the franchise, the expectations were very high and they were never going to be fulfilled With the ideas so empty that were on the table.

    Captura de pantalla 2021-10-26 09.03.46.png

"Han Solo" at best is an entertaining film that deserves a couple of views and little else, with interesting ideas that coexist with mediocre but nothing that seeks to remain in our collective memory for long.

What could be one of the most fascinating projects in the Star Wars universe developing one of the most adored characters in all of popular culture, ends up being another blockbuster of the bunch, responsible not only for its own failure but for totally stopping the series of Spin-Offs that were brewing with similar concepts.

    Separador.png

  5. Solo (film): It was about what i expected@gooddream2834d

I did not see this in theaters because they didn't have it in English. Although I have to admit that is not the only reason I didn't go. Had it been in English I probably still wouldn't have gone.

    u5c2qqnavtv01.jpg

You see, I am one of the people that feel as though the Star Wars universe has been pretty much destroyed since shortly after Disney got a hold of it. I enjoyed Rogue One, but have been underwhelmed with anything else that has come out, in particular I absolutely hated The Last Jedi. I wrote a vitriol-filled diatribe about that piece of crap.

That being said, Solo was visually stunning, the story was actually pretty good about how Han ended up being a smuggler and his introduction to Chewie. Lando, and of course the Millennium Falcon kind of makes sense.

    1821-hasbros-han-solo-movie-toys-reveal-a-key-millenniu-millennium-falcon-kessel-run.jpg

Now, i hope this doesn't make me sound too misogynistic, but Disney just had to go and throw a feminist agenda into the film again didn't they? I'm not going to spoil anything but there are several instances where the women characters are the saviors to the "donkey stupid" men they are accompanying and I just gotta wonder why Disney keeps doing this. Even one of the droids was a #metoo robot with an attitude who is hell bent on saving the world and equal rights.

The visual effects are amazing, especially the scenes during the Kessel Run, which is funny to me that such an epic event can be spawned from one line that was spoken by Han in the Mos Eisley Cantina back in Star Wars IV.

    Han-Solo-Kessel-Run-Lie-Star-Wars.jpg

This was the best part of the film for me and for and I would imagine this was incredible to see in the theater. I saw it on on 50" screen with a pretty poor audio system so I can only imagine how intense it would have been in an IMAX theater.
Having their escape cut off by a star destroyer surrounded by a space maelstrom was eerie and awesome.

I would be interested in seeing how much of this was CGI and how much was actually done using scale models. If it is 100% CGI it is very very good CGI because it looks crisp and never fake the way the CGI did in Episodes 1 and 2.

The acting is good, the action is nicely paced, the story is interesting and the addition of Woody Harrelson is always welcome in my book. The only problem I had with it is that they have a slapstick feel to it and hints of a political agenda. Overall, it is worth seeing and deserving of praise.

  6. Star Wars: Why Solo bombed@everittdmickey2939d

    because of 'toxic' fans ..........................................................................................................................................................

Really? I didn't go because I expected it to be boring.

SO last millenium. Starwars technology is outdated. It indicates a gross failure of imagination.

Unlike the first one. The second one wasn't TOO bad...the third one sucked brown canal water. I haven't seen any of the other ones. I kind of lost interest in the decade or two between the third and fourth one. I've heard the fifth and sixth ones are even worse...

    Now I know WHY.

It's because of US. According to the author of the article.

    ....................

    • Kennedy could have had these priorities(see the linked article. He's talking about political correctness) and created good movies. (I don't think so. PC sux) Instead, she didn’t. She created a bunch of goop. The Force Awakens is garbage; The Last Jedi is double-garbage. That’s because Kennedy had two choices upon being granted the helm of the Star Wars universe: (1) fast-forward fifty years, beyond the original characters, and reboot, losing the nostalgia of the original characters but gaining freshness; (2) recast the original characters and pick up where Return of the Jedi left off. Instead, in fully risk averse fashion, she chose door (3): leech off the nostalgia while introducing new characters a few years in the future. This led her to the idiotic decision to murder off all the original beloved characters in increasingly stupid fashion – and then to the doubly idiotic decision to go back and create new movies around those now-dead characters. She pissed off all of us who grew up on Star Wars, and in doing so, destroyed whatever good will existed among us for the newer batch of characters. Solo and Rogue One are good movies – but Han Solo was killed by JJ Abrams in The Force Awakens after being turned into a loser drifting around the galaxy in his iconic Millenium Falcon, the equivalent of a deadbeat dad who abandoned his family in the 1970s to trek the country in his bug van; Rogue One revolved around a set of characters who all die.

    .......................

Sequels to a movie are BAD enough. Rarely are they the equal of the original. A trilogy is usually worse.... Prequels, Reboots and ReInventions are worse yet. They are loose canons (see what I did there? that's a pun)

    BUT

to kill off the characters, then make a prequel about them combines bad and bad. Worse yet it's all SJW all the time. why would anyone be interested?

  7. Flying Solo at Solo@blewitt2940d

While in Orlando for MegaCon a little over a week ago, I hopped into a Lyft and shot over to Disney Springs to catch Solo....by myself...like usual.

It was my first time using my brand spankin new MoviePass card which worked flawlessly. I highly recommend signing up for it if you frequent the theaters.

It was opening night and the AMC had a cool spotlight of the films title that I decided to strike a pose for.

As for the film??? I enjoyed it! I am a Star Wars fan and being disappointed in The Last Jedi, I was slightly concerned about Solo: A Star Wars Story. To my delight it was fun and enjoyable. I loved how they fleshed out the backstory of Han & Chewie. We got to see that bond form right before our eyes. I fully recommend checking it out if you have not already. Ignore the disappointing box office numbers and go see Solo!!!

  8. "Solo: A Star Wars Story" by Ron Howard - movie review@godflesh2955d

In the history of mankind everything - absolutely everything! - rests on possession (money) and territory on which influence (power) extends. A sad part of our reality and the postmodern eclectic of the 21st century is the eradication of any sensation of measure, the atrophy of the senses, distortions of the notions of value, and the tendency of murder of brain cells by which the most popular and powerful entertainment industry cultivates the stupidity of several generations of young people gradually turning into conscientious users of pseudo-art. Outside the art-cinema, which, from the very birth of movies, is preferred by a limited circle of thought fans, blockbuster machines are constantly looking to create new and new epochal "canvases" that for decades have been favorite junk food for the millions of fattened brains of the average population around the world. And if Marvel and DC are responsible for the comic "serials," I personally am disgusted with Disney's death for total impudence, defeating the world of the "Star Wars" saga. Because everything is up to money and influence! "The House of the Mouse" has done everything possible to buy - honestly - a "golden" series and intends to squeeze it all the way. The way it is "spin-off" and new episodes to faint - even when or especially when they find themselves unnecessary ...

    solo-teaser-poster-04-691x1024.jpg

And since I mentioned death, do you remember that epoching moment in Episode VII, which shook the senses of all die hard fans - with the bored boy who pierced his own father? No, Han Solo was not killed then - they did very well Kathleen Kennedy and Ron Howard with "Solo: A Star Wars Story" . The two actually did a great job to Chris Miller and Phil Lord because everyone is already wondering what their version of the movie was angry with the producer and whether it would not have been better. However, if I have to be absolutely honest, after seeing the result of the combined efforts of spending an endless number of millions in the name of other millions of revenue, I no longer care "what if"The sad or rather tragic situation is how I was not, at least, enthusiastic about going to the movie theater for the first time in my life to watch a story from the Star Wars universe - if that fact was known to my teenage "I" in the early 1980s, when my parents took me for the first time to see the beginning of the saga, and I fell in love with it, I would be self-sacrificing for blasphemy! Throughout my conscious life I would not have thought that it would be possible to get there to have no desire to see a Star Wars movie. I went without seeing trailers in an attempt to get rid of all expectations - and I could not even hate the result I saw on the screen. The first impression of "Solo: A Star Wars Story" was a senseless, in some places even boring "drag". And I would have remained totally indifferent if I was not overwhelmed with the purity of the filmmakers who wanted to spoil this ... The most important element in the nightmare's confused puzzle is the casting. We all had serious doubts that Aldren Aranjrach would have been in the role of the famous bastard and unscrupulous charmer - and they were right. Even the people who do not understand the cinema have long been aware that this boy can not play, but Kathleen and Company had to make their experiment all the way to kill the movie. We met a simple, charisma-empty character that can only be charmed by viewers who have not heard of Han Solo; who had said the lines and played the action-scenes, and by the end of the movie we did not see any development in him - he went through the meetings with other plot characters and important beings in his life (maybe) had to have intriguing episodes, but nothing happened at the emotional level, neither in him as a hero in his own story nor in our viewers. For me, this "version" of Han Solo will remain absolutely unknown, and the "promise" of one or two episodes devoted to his youth provokes only the skeptical smile of an indifferent observer - if there is anything to fund them ...

    solo-a-star-wars-story-1200x520.jpg

The element of the other heroes - another big mistake is putting Emily Clark's "Dragon's Mother" into the cast. The girl also does not act as an actress (to some extent, it is more tragic than Eraniyah), but I would not say that there is much like a dramatic material to work with. The interaction between her heroine (Han's heartbeat) and the future favorite gambler of the galaxy is devoid of any chemistry (no matter how I do not like that word!) And even you become indifferent whether you look at them both on the screen - the poor characteristic of a work, to provoke indifference. Donald Glover, as the young Lando Calrizian, was not infinitely bad, because he achieved some resemblance to the image we know in the performance of Billy Dee Williams, but the total "lightening" of the role comes from the plot of blame that he had to save his second pilot - a feminine feminist robot with rebellious ideas about equal rights to artificial intelligence. How weird is that? The appearance of Paul Bettani in a villain role was also quite meh-moment and I don't need the explanation that this character was conceived as a CGI, at the last moment he was re-cast and reprinted - untrue and predictable, not working on the plot, there are cool daggers, with nothing else to be remembered. The only nice and courageous character, without exception from the common denominator "two-dimensionality", is that of Woody Harrelson, a bold, daring, but cautious cheater from which young Han can learn. It's boring for me to waste time - both yours and mine - in commenting on fan-service moments where no more interesting activities would be won. Truly I say to you, they can be neglected with a light hand, even one being overly self-centered.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" can be called an adventure film, but it misses dramatic spark and magnetic heroes. It may be left as a head at the space opera, invented more than four decades ago by George Lucas, but only if any associations with already familiar faces and events are deleted. I feel overwhelmed by the fact that Laurence Kadzin (who debuted as a 31-year-old with the script of my favorite episode V - "The Empire Strikes Back") stands out with his name behind this film-misunderstanding, and I tend to give up all the negative " credit "to his son Jonathan, co-author of the crime. And above all - I can not forgive Ron Howard and Kathleen Kennedy that they failed a (potentially) good promise with wrong decisions in all respects about this film. The most rewarding prize would be a total failure at the box office and a refusal of draft plans for the next two films devoted to Han. But my naivety does not go so far - I know there will be millions of people who will go to see"Solo: A Star Wars Story", despite the feedback on its inadequacy, and the company's money box will once again jangle the gold of the deceived hopes. And if I believed in oaths, I would have asked all Uncle Scrooge's worthy heirs to choke with their precious coins! Amen! R.I.P Han Solo ...

  9. A Geeky Dad’s Movie Guide to Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)@hanshotfirst2955d

As I mentioned in my previous post, my long wait to see Solo:A Star Wars Story finally ended today. Due to a timing issue, I did have to see it in LIEMAX (which I despise) but I won't hold that against the movie.

I was not disappointed at all.

*This movie might not be deep, but it is fun.*

Like two of the previous three Disney produced Star Wars stories, this movie did its job.

The Force Awakens was a love letter to Han Solo that built a bridge between fans who were children of the 1970s and those born in the 21st century. I thought it was perfect.

Rogue One needed to explain exactly how it was even remotely possible that a rag tag band of rebels could destroy the most powerful weapon in the galaxy using only a small fighter piloted by an untrained whiny farm boy. It did a fine job and also introduced some very cool characters... who we will never see again.

The Last Jedi should have been a love letter to Luke Skywalker that explained his whereabouts for the past twenty years and why Kylo Ren could become so evil that he murderer his own father. Not only did it epicly fail as an homage to Luke Skywalker (turning him into a coward and a tool), but it also provided 45 completely useless minutes of important rebels running around a casino planet after being arrested for parking violations.

*Let me get this straight. Two of the most important characters got thrown in jail for parking violations. That made it into the actual movie?*

This failure lead me to temper my expectations for Solo. The fact that they felt the need to replace the directors during production did not exactly rekindle my shaken confidence. Still I hoped the character and his backstory was compelling enough that it could not possibly be ruined.

The creative team had some simple tasks:

    • Show me how Han and Chewy became soulmates

    • Show me how Han and Lando became frenemies

    • Show me how Han got the Millennium Falcon

    • Show me why Han is a hero (even if he will never admit it)

    • Show me how Han learned it was always wise to shoot first

Not only did this movie check every single one of those off their list, it did it with a perfect mix of action and humor.

    *They didn't screw it up!*

Please take note, this movie is not perfect. It could have been better. The middle slowed down a little too much for my taste and it didn't really do much aside from formulaically check off the boxes above. But that is OK. It was incredibly entertaining and my whole family loved it.

The special effects during the many action sequences were flawless as always. The creators knew this movie should be a fun ride and they did not disappoint. There are "car" chases, space chases, land battles, space battles, close combat sequences, and escapes. Toss in a nice caper element and you have the perfect popcorn movie. Although I don't think anyone will ever list this as a life defining movie (as many geeks did when Star Wars was released in 1977) I also don't think many people will turn this one off when it inevitably gets played on cable TV every 3 months for the rest of our lives. It will be one of those movies that when you are flipping through channels, you will always stop because no matter where you pick it up, something fun is about to happen.

In addition to the action, it is quite funny. It came as no shock that Han's banter with Chewbacca and Lando is amusing. However, what was surprising was how funny Lando's droid L3-37 was. She was genuinely hilarious. I think she may have become my daughter's new favorite character. My son just told me, "she is the best droid in Star Wars so far". High praise indeed... and well deserved.

*See. She's delightful! (Easter egg alert)*

Looking back, I should not have been surprised that the movie was far better than The Last Jedi. After all, it is written by Jonathan Kasdan and his father Lawrence Kasdan who is responsible for penning The Empire Strikes Back… the greatest Star Wars movie ever. When they needed to replace the previous directors, they chose Ron Howard who knows how to have fun (see Arrested Development). This team knew what was on the line. They could not break geeks’ hearts and ruin Han Solo. Not only did they preserve his legend, they added to it. In addition, they inserted so many Easter eggs for fan boys like me that I am positive that I did not catch them all. You need to pay attention to every detail of every conversation as well as the actors who might seem unimportant at first.

Speaking of actors, I was thrilled with every casting decision. Alden Ehrenreich did not simply perform a Harrison Ford impersonation. He played Han about as believably as anyone I can imagine. Woody Harrleson does well as the veteran scoundrel role model. Emily Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones) is fantastic. She is believable and athletic in her action scenes. Obviously Donald Glover was simply born to play Lando. Let's face it, he pretty much is Lando. I think if anyone else had been cast, fans would have been angry for years at the missed opportunity. He is suave, arrogant, and funny. Like I said... he is Lando.

*I still don't know how they found an actor who looked exactly like the old Chewbacca.*

If they had consulted me before creating this movie, in addition to the jobs listed above, I would have added a few more:

    • Include as many Easter eggs as possible (including a Ron Howard one)

    • Make me teary eyed or give me chills a couple of times

    • Include a huge surprise

    • Make me yearn for a sequel

Even without my expert opinion (sarcasm intended) they managed to include all of these as well. In fact, the surprise they included is so huge that I bet even the most avid fan will not see it coming. If someone had given me 50 guesses, I don't think I could have possibly predicted it... and it is AWESOME! (Please no one spoil it in the comments.)

Although Solo: A Star Wars Story may not be a grand slam, at least it isn't the sacrifice bunt that The Last Jedi was. The Last Jedi moved the story along and will be quickly forgotten. This was a double down the line that the runner stretched into a triple. Hopefully the sequel knocks him in.

    Geeky Dad's Movie Guide

Number of times I fell asleep: 0 (I did go to the bathroom during one slow part) Number of eye rolls: 0 Number of face palms: 0 (An attempted cantina-like Easter egg fell a bit flat) Number of times my kid asked to go to the bathroom or get food out of sheer boredom: 0 (They were entertained nearly non-stop) Number of times I checked steemit: 0 Did my kids like it: 13 year old son and 11 year old daughter both LOVED it! 10. Insomniac Film Festival #50- Solo: A Star Wars Story@rvgenaille2955d

image Solo: A Star Wars Story is an early adventure of Han Solo, kind of an origin story about a bunch of things in the Star Wars universe that were referenced in the original trilogy but never explained until now. Like the previous Rogue One before it, Solo seeks to expand the side stories of that original trilogy even as it was unnecessary.

Really, part of the appeal is that we are left with the mystery of those things. Solo is enjoyable as was Rogue One but it doesn’t need to exist. image The story is a great heist and criminal underworld story set in outer space. The characters are fun and funny. The Star Wars elements were really the least interesting parts. Alden Ehrenreich, as Han Solo, is likeable, as is Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. The whole cast is interesting with the possible exception of Paul Bettany as the main antagonist. I found him really annoying. Emilia Clarke was okay as Q’ra as was Woody Harrelson as Beckett. image I do have to admit I really liked seeing Chewbacca let loose, much like seeing Vader in Rogue One, he actually had a bit of an arc, unlike much of the original trilogy where he was firmly a sidekick. I didn’t fully understand his motivation for staying with Han but he had a bit of a history all his own. He was played by Jonas Soutama and, I suspect some cgi for his mouth as it was far more movable than I’ve ever seen it, though not over the top.

There was a cameo appearance that, while I won’t spoil, does confuse the timeline for me although I am aware of how it would work. They were very obviously setting up a sequel.

Entertaining space opera if not a great Star Wars flick.

  11. Solo: A Star Wars Story - Movie Review@coldsteem2955d

Ron Howard has directed some decent films in his time. He has come a long way from little Opie Taylor on the Andy Griffith show. But I think he needs to steer clear of science fiction. Particularly franchises that are beloved by fans. I was sorely disappointed with The Dark Tower last year. Howard follows that mediocre film with Solo: A Star Wars Story. Usually fan films like Star Wars enjoy a nice "fanboy" bump when they are first released. Apparently, I am not alone in my disappointment.

Solo: A Star Wars Story provides us with the backstory of one of the franchise's most beloved characters, Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). We get a glimpse into the distant past, as a young Solo is attempting to steal his freedom along with the love of his life, Qi'ra (Emilia mother-of-dragons Clarke). We get a rapid-fire introduction to a blossoming romance, a sloppy separation and an awkward reunion. In the meantime, Solo signs up for flight training to be the best pilot in the universe, only to wash out and fight muddy wars for delineated purposes. Of course, we don't see any of that. It is summarized in one or two lines of script. We get the history of Solo's introduction to Chewbacca (Joonas Suatamo), a sampling of his renegade tendencies and some full-on cowboy pilot stuff.

Solo: A Star Wars Story felt more like I was reading Solo's diary than watching an action science fiction film. Don't get me wrong, there are some awesome action sequences. But the film is awkward. It lacks balance. There are some really boring set-up scenes that trudge along like passages in a diary. Boring passages. There really isn't much of a narrative arc so much as a set up for the future. There is conflict and resolution, but the goal of the film really feels like a set up for the next film. And an illustration of how facts we know about Han Solo came to be. But overall, the film lacked a heartbeat. It was more a journal entry than a story. Star Wars has always been a series-based franchise. I have no issue with that. But the other films in this franchise generally stand alone for entertainment value. This one falls short of the mark.

One thing that nagged at me a bit with the writing (Jonathan and Lawrence Kasden) was the not-so-subtle need to insert political references into the film. It didn't fit at times, creating unnecessary distraction from the story. Some of the dialogue was wasted on nonsense. That wasted space could have been better deployed developing the characters more. I liked Solo. I didn't care for the actor when watching the trailers, but he did a great job, in part because of the writing. But the other characters were flat. It seemed as if they didn't want to give us any other character to root for. That was disappointing. I expected to connect more with the characters but really didn't care if any of them lived or whether they were all gathered together on Scariff and obliterated with the planet destroyer.

The casting for this film should have yielded a better result. The one actor I was least familiar with, I liked the best. Ehrenreich did a solid job of holding his character together. He had the right moxy for the role. And I went into the film already presuming I wouldn't like him. Clarke is one of my favorite actresses from Game of Thrones. She is amazing. But her character was lopsided. I just wasn't feeling it. Woody Harrelson has been in everything in recent years. I like him. Generally. His character was a bit more complex than Qi'ra, but still predictable. Chewbacca was chewbacca. It worked for me. aarrragghuuhw uughghhhgh Overall, the casting was solid, but the characters were not drawn in a way to capitalize on the talent.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is rated PG-13. To hit its target audience, it needed to be. It is intended to be family science fiction. And there were plenty of children at the screening I went to. The younger children seemed disinterested, but there were more than I expected. The rating is undoubtedly tied to the violence. There is plenty of violence, although it is not necessarily graphic. The violence to machines seems to have been the most extreme. There are some great action scenes, which are intense, but not likely nightmare inducing. There are some decent creatures rendered in the film, but none that seemed overtly scary. The film has a lengthy two hour and fifteen minute run time. I think the film probably needed to be that long, but should have had less dead time and more back story.

After watching Rogue One and coming away satisfied, I had high expectations for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Unfortunately, the latter fell short of the mark. I have been bashing the film a bit, but I actually liked it. My criticism is harsh because this film had a lot of potential. It had a big budget, a strong cast and a massive built-in following. But the writing fell short of the mark. The editing didn't help, either. With a bit more care, this film could have been improved greatly. As it stands, it is a milquetoast entry into a storied franchise. If they do a sequel, which is likely, I hope they spend more time getting it right. Give me some characters I can engage. 7/10.

  12. Moviepass review--Solo--A Saturday Matinee flick@mctiller2956d

A new Star Wars movie is here.

It used to be a new Star Wars movie came out every three years.  They were major events.  Once every three years a new freakin’ Star Wars movie.

But those days are gone.  Star Wars makes way too much money to let it go away.  I am 45.  People my age grew up thinking Return of the Jedi was going to be the last film.  It took 16 years to get another film, then we got two more three years after that.  Then it took another ten years to get The Force Awakens.

Now this weekend we Solo.  It is the second Star Wars movie in six months.  I never thought I would ever see that.

I mention this because Star Wars becoming a commodity takes away some of the excitement that we use to have in going to that galaxy far far away.

But after saying that, I need to say this.

    I still want Star Wars.

    It is still fun.

    And Solo is fun.

It isn’t a perfect movie.  It’s not the best Star Wars film.  It doesn’t break new ground.  But so what?

It is a Star Wars movie.

Solo is played by Alden Ehenriech, Ki’ra is played by Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones Fame.  Lando Calrissian is played to perfection by Donald Glover, who sounds exactly like Billy Dee Williams who played Lando in the original trilogy.

Chewbacca is played by Joonas Suomato.  And Woody Harrleson plays Tobias Beckett a criminal who is the head of his own crew.  Thadie Newton plays his wife Val Beckett, and Jon Favereu voices Rio Durant, a new type of alien in the Star Wars universe and a member of Beckett’s crew.

The movie begins with Han as a young man on his home world of Corellia, which is ruled by gangsters.

I liked this part.  It is always cool to see new parts of the Star Wars universe.  He and his girlfriend Ki’ra are desperate to escape.  Han manages to steal some hyperfuel during a deal gone wrong, and it’s their hope to sell the fuel on the blackmarket for enough money to own their own ship and get away.  But in order to get off of the planet they must go through an Imperial check-point where they are discovered with the fuel.  Ki’ra is captured by the Empire.  In hopes of making it back to Corelia to find Ki’ra Han enlists in the Empire, in hopes of being a pilot.  As with most plans, he doesn’t become a pilot, but an infantryman.  Flash forward three years and Han is still not a pilot and is stuck as a “mudhead” and in the middle of a battle he meets Beckett.

The movie moves through it’s checklist of who he needs to meet.

When Solo meets Chewie, for my money this is one of the best scenes in the entire Star Wars series.  It is fun and a blast.  I wasn’t sure how he would meet Han, but the scene works very well.

We move through a cool train robbery with Solo and Beckett’s crew.

And then onto meeting Crime Lord Dryden Vos, played by Paul Bethany.  After owing Vos more money, Beckett, Han, Chewie, and Ki’ra head to meet Lando because he has a fast ship.

And from here the movie really takes off.

I am not going to spoil anymore of the movie.  There isn’t a lot to spoil, but there is some.

The second half of the movie really takes off.  There is a surprise character at the end that connects the movie with the television shows.  There is a nod to the idea that Han does shoot first.  And we see Han prepare to go meet Jabba.

    Final Thoughts

The movie doesn’t break new ground like The Last Jedi, but it is fun.  If you enjoyed the original Star Wars trilogy I recommend seeing this in the theater as Star Wars movies are meant to be seen.  It is a fun Saturday matinee flick as the original Star Wars movies were meant to be.

For the contest #53 which begins today, I chose the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) which is directed by Ron Howard who made some great movies like Far and Away (1992), Apollo 13 (1995), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Cinderella Man (2005) and other. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) have the first release date in 23 May in countries like Finland, France, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the date which will count for our contest is 26 May. Solo: A Star Wars Story

I very much had my doubts about this one and the last trailer, the teaser, did not do anything to ease them. This one, though, is a different story. Chewbacca alone have peaked my interest and left me curious for more. So yeah, a space adventure, whether **Star Wars** or not, this looks exciting. I’ll be there.
