Solo - A Star Wars Story (2018): It deserves the hate?

There are too many portions of the Star Wars universe about which it is easy to feel conflicted, among so many movies, video games, comics and series it is normal that for each person the franchise represents something different, this representation supposes a set that expectations that will never be fulfilled by all the franchise works.

"Han Solo" is a particular case because it seems that almost all the fans hate it in unison and it is quite difficult to find people beyond ordinary criticism who appreciate it, for this very reason, after a couple of years completely ignoring it I decided to go back to see it and I felt that it would be interesting to reflect a little on why.

In short, "Han Solo: A Star Wars Story" was the second ambitious Star Wars Spin Off after Rogue One, a film dedicated exclusively to telling us the story of Han before the events of A New Hope. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Alden Ehrenreich, "Solo" is responsible for one of the biggest production hells of the last decade, although after several years shuffling actors and directors we finally got it in 2018.

"Solo" works as a heist movie that seeks not only to develop the character of Han Solo but to show us a side of the Star Wars universe that is often ignored.

Although it is undeniable how exciting its premise is, it is also important to open up and see the project for what it is: a container with abundant fan service and few intentions to tell a story that as viewers we need to know.

Solo's greatest sin stems from the very structural problems that his existence entails: having to retroactively adjust Han's evolution as a character to provide a narrative arc that works within the confines of this film, as well as trying to establish events in his life that collide with what we already knew about him from the Skywalker Saga.

The complaints were constant about its dark photography and although I feel that they are justified for me they do not ruin the film, It is only a work that by itself works quite well, it has good quality special effects, quite solid action sets and exciting moments with new characters ... although this level of decency crumbles when we evaluate it in contrast to its original films.

In more cynical terms it is a parade of winks and references that cares little about having thematic or emotional coherence, A Star Wars Story cannot help but wink and hug us because we know the original material even if it involves altering characters and events.

This desire to please ends up taking us to an ironically uncomfortable place, where any positive aspect is overshadowed by its own problems. For example, we find a fairly well-chosen cast, with Alden mimicking Harrison Ford's mannerisms and speech without falling into the cartoonish, adding his own touch ... Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke do what they can with a script that occasionally lets them shine.

The question is: Is it hated without justification? Answering in a few words: No ... although Solo: A Star Wars Story is not a terrible film and it fulfills everything that is expected of it from a technical angle (and even artistic, if we put photography aside), no more is needed You have to visit the original trilogy to clearly observe all the mistakes that this spin-off made, although as an isolated product it works and it could be said that it is a good way to introduce new fans to the franchise, the expectations were very high and they were never going to be fulfilled With the ideas so empty that were on the table.

"Han Solo" at best is an entertaining film that deserves a couple of views and little else, with interesting ideas that coexist with mediocre but nothing that seeks to remain in our collective memory for long.

What could be one of the most fascinating projects in the Star Wars universe developing one of the most adored characters in all of popular culture, ends up being another blockbuster of the bunch, responsible not only for its own failure but for totally stopping the series of Spin-Offs that were brewing with similar concepts.

Existen demasiadas porciones del universo Star Wars sobre las cuales es fácil sentirse conflictuado, entre tantas películas, videojuegos, cómics y series es normal que para cada persona la franquicia represente algo distinto, esta representación supone un set que expectativas que nunca será cumplido por todas las obras de la franquicia.

“Han Solo” es un caso particular porque pareciera que casi todos los fans la odiamos a la unísono y es bastante difícil encontrar gente más allá de la critica ordinaria que la aprecio, por esto mismo, luego de un par de años ignorándola por completo decidí volver a verla y sentí que sería interesante reflexionar un poco sobre el por qué.

En pocas palabras “Han Solo: A Star Wars Story” fue el segundo ambicioso Spin Off de Star Wars luego de Rogue One, una película dedicada exclusivamente a contarnos la historia de Han antes de los eventos de A New Hope. Dirigida por Ron Howard y protagonizada por Alden Ehrenreich, “Solo” es responsable de uno de los infiernos de producción más grandes de la última década, aunque luego de varios años barajando actores y directores finalmente la obtuvimos en 2018.

“Solo” funciona como una heist movie que busca no sólo desarrollar al personaje de Han Solo sino mostrarnos un lado del universo Star Wars que suele ser ignorado.

Aunque es innegable lo emocionante de su premisa también es importante sincerarse y observar el proyecto como lo que es: un recipiente con abundante fan service y pocas intenciones de narrar una historia que como espectadores necesitemos saber.

El mayor pecado de Solo deriva de los propios problemas estructurales que supone su existencia: el tener que retroactivamente ajustar la evolución de Han como personaje para brindar un arco narrativo que funcione dentro de los confines de este film, así como tratar de establecer eventos en su vida que chocan con lo que ya sabíamos de él por la Skywalker Saga.

Las quejas fueron constantes por su fotografía tan oscura y aunque siento que sean justificadas para mi no arruinan el film, Solo es una obra que por si sola funciona bastante bien, tiene efectos especiales de buena calidad, sets de acción bastante sólidos y momentos emocionantes con nuevos personajes… aunque este nivel de decencia se desmorona cuando lo evaluamos en contraposición a sus films originarios.

En términos más cínicos es un desfile de guiños y referencias que se preocupa poco por tener coherencia temática o emocional, A Star Wars Story no puede evitar guiñarnos el ojo y el abrazarnos porque conocemos el material original aunque suponga alterar personajes y eventos.

Este afán por complacer nos termina llevando a un sitio irónicamente incomodo, en donde cualquier aspecto positivo se ve opacado por sus propios problemas. Por ejemplo, nos encontramos con un cast bastante bien escogido, con Alden mimicando los manerismos y la forma de hablar de Harrison Ford sin caer en lo caricaturesco, añadiendo su propio toque… Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover y Emilia Clarke hacen lo que pueden con un guion que de vez en cuando les deja brillar.

La pregunta es: ¿Es odiada sin justificación? Respondiendo en pocas palabras: No… aunque Solo: A Star Wars Story no es una película pésima y cumple con todo lo que se espera de ella desde un ángulo técnico (Y hasta artístico, si dejamos de lado la fotografía), no hace falta más que visitar la trilogía original para observar con claridad todos los errores que este spin-off cometió, aunque como producto aislado funciona y podría decirse que es buena forma de introducir nuevos fans a la franquicia, las expectativas estaban muy altas y nunca se iban a llenar con las ideas tan vacías que estaban sobre la mesa.

“Solo” en el mejor de los casos es una cinta entretenida que merece un par de visionados y poco más, con ideas interesantes que coexisten con lo mediocre pero nada que busque quedarse en nuestra memoria colectiva por mucho tiempo.

Lo que pudo ser uno de los proyectos más fascinantes dentro del universo Star Wars desarrollando a uno de los personajes más adorados de toda la cultura popular, termina siendo otro blockbuster del montón, responsable no sólo de su propio fracaso sino de frenar totalmente la serie de Spin-Offs que se estaban gestando con conceptos similares.
