Is Solo worth seeing in the theater? To answer that ask yourself, do you want to sit through a monotonous, predictable plot, and a metric ton of fan service? Do you want everything that made Han Solo cool in the OT explored in excruciating detail? Do you want to cringe as hamfisted reference dialogue is spewed from the cast? If you said yes to any of these questions then by all means go see it.
Solo is not a good movie. It is an average at best predictable heist/adventure movie that gets pulled down under the weight of all the references it shoves in. New characters introduced are either bland and forgettable or shockingly bad ( see L3-37) . The movie really has no stakes, it has that prequel problem where you know nothing can happen to the principal players so everything will work out fine. And if you thought Rogue One had way too many callbacks to the OT then buckle up because this movie cranks it to 11. Every possible tiny detail of Han's existence and anything he mentioned or was seen with has a nod. And don't worry, everything Chewy ever did gets a callback too. I won't spoil any of them but a few made me actually groan in embarrassment. I'll admit it could have been a lot worse, but is mediocrity really any better? The movie is not even fun to make fun of, it's just too bland and lifeless.
My advice would be to just wait for the Blu-ray unless you are dying to see some Star Wars ( the last one was only 5 months ago though so I don't know why anyone would be). I saw this for free and kind of feel ripped off. The force is weak with this one I'm afraid.
