Hello, internet people! Just yesterday I re-watched this 2001 film and once again I cried with it as well as made me think. I think everything about it is almost perfect and as usual, we'll break it down by characteristics.

Let's start by talking as usual about the photography. It is extremely beautiful, just look at the image above. The shots are very well taken care of, as well as the colour palette, however, the colour palette is opaque, used in thrillers and horror, but also used in drama as it is more washed out than dark, which creates a sense of coldness and given the story of David (our protagonist) this is self-explanatory.

What I like most about the photography (talking about lighting, shadows and colours) is that no matter how much light there is, no matter how much "festive atmosphere" the scene portrays, it always still feels depressing or sad and it is because the filter used generates it, since the story is from David's point of view from the moment he appears and there are many things that this android does not understand and his innocence blinds him to the truth.

The performances are too good, we already know that Haley Osment was a child prodigy of acting, but if he had already captivated me with Sixth Sense, here he moved me to tears. One of the saddest scenes is when he suffers abandonment, his dialogue, his expressions and body gestures are incredible.

This scene is heartbreaking in the extreme, especially considering all the dangers and abuses suffered by this little machine at the hands of heartless humans.

The story is impressive and presents a divided point of view. In this futuristic world, humans have created androids with over-developed artificial intelligence, and created them en masse to replace many jobs. Sexual servants (which means the disappearance of unwanted pregnancies, sexual diseases and those who cater to any kind of preference), chefs (reprogrammed with all the recipes of choice, no risk of burns or cuts and can make dinner and have it ready for when the human arrives), nannies (able to look after children 24 hours a day without having to pay them) etc. David is the first Android beyond hyper-realistic, who was created in the image and likeness of his creator's son. In addition to his advanced physical technology that prevents people from distinguishing him from humans, David has a reprogramming manual to make him capable of love.

I don't want to give more details to avoid spoilers, but the fact is that the film shows us that most humans fear and resent androids because they are jealous of them, the things they can do and also because of their "immortality, is not allowed to operate or is damaged, is hunted and taken to "The Flesh Fair", a fair where humans have fun damaging androids by dismembering them, burning them or something like that.

Humans, in their haste to make the perfect robot, gave these androids a superior, automaton-like intelligence, gave them sensitivity to pain and although they do not beg for their existence (with the exception of David, who is the most advanced of them all) they do want to preserve it as they fear ceasing to exist (that is why we see them hiding and running away from the meat fairs). Because of the human error of creating perfect beings and then feeling jealous of them, the machines suffer authentically at the hands of humans who see them as mere machines and therefore do not consider that they make them suffer, despite seeing them flee in terror.

We become aware of the jealousy of humans, for example when David's brother Orga keeps getting him into trouble, by manipulating him and taking advantage of his innocence until he ends up getting rid of him.

The soundtrack is beautiful. Most of its melody is melancholic, I think (in my personal opinion) it makes you feel like David, longing for a love that he lost as soon as his replacement arrived and was relegated and subsequently abandoned. An unconditional love that not even a human could feel and deliver because even in that, David was better, better than any machine and better than any human, a child who was only different in the way he was created but in everything else he was an authentic and real child, something he so longed to be, like Pinocchio. A machine more human than humans, but misunderstood and admired for the wrong reasons. The soundtrack reflects the child's complex feelings that only he among his peers could develop, feel and give away. I'll leave the soundtrack for you to enjoy:

The special effects (I almost forgot to mention them) were tremendous for their time and still are today. It's amazing how detailed the Meccas are and also the futuristic cities, they look incredible.

In short, this film is a gem and has aged tremendously well. Its story is simple but with profound and thought-provoking overtones. To what extent does human evil go to create something thinking and then destroy it in atrocious ways just out of jealousy? Is the human ego so big that it cannot be overcome by its creation? Why is the human being incapable of feeling empathy for its creation when it is overcome? Do we want to create beings like these to enslave them just because they are machines? If we start from the fact that we give them automaton thinking and that generates them to move through the world, wouldn't it be morally wrong to harm them or enslave them? I don't forget one of the best lines of the film: "David, they (humans) don't love us, they only love what we can do for them, and when we can't do it anymore, they will get rid of us".

It was a film in which the harmony of artificial intelligence with human beings was explained very well. It is about the contribution of robots integrated with artificial intelligence to human life in advanced lives and there are robots on the drama side. It may be the opposite in the future. If artificial intelligence gets out of control, there may be people in the drama part like in the terminator films.

I really wanted to know what was on Stanley Kubrick's mind before the movie was finished by Steven Spielberg.

¡Hola!

I saw it a long time ago. At the time I didn't like it very much, it was a Kubrick project that after his death was taken up by Spielberg, but the final part is the one I didn't like.
