Llevo días queriendo escribir sobre esta película, porque aunque la vi hace unos meses y me dejó desconcertada y no podía definir si era una buena o mala película, después de eso la he visto varias veces y la razón es que es atractiva a la vista, tiene ritmo y un gran elenco conformado por la bella Florence Pugh, el cantante británico Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan y Olivia Wilde quien también se encargó de la dirección.

Lo primero que hay que hacer es imaginar cómo era la vida de las mujeres en los años 50, cuando la única tarea que se les encomendaba era la de ser esposa y cuidar de su marido. Esta es la premisa utilizada en este thriller psicológico para contarnos una historia sobre lo que un hombre de hoy estaría dispuesto a hacer para tener una esposa y una vida como en los años 50.

I have been wanting to write about this movie for days, because although I saw it a few months ago and it left me puzzled and I could not define if it was a good or bad movie, after that I have seen it several times and the reason is that it is attractive to look at, it has rhythm and a great cast conformed by the beautiful Florence Pugh, the British singer Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Olivia Wilde who was also in charge of the direction.

The first thing to do is to imagine what life was like for women in the 50’s, when the only task they were given was to be a wife and take care of their husband. This is the premise used in this psychological thriller to tell us a story about what a man today would be willing to do to have a wife and a life like in the 50s.

En la comunidad de Victoria, en los años 50, Alice (Florence Pugh) una joven esposa empieza a sospechar que algo va mal en la misteriosa empresa donde trabaja su marido Jack (Harry Styles).

Victoria es una comunidad creada por Frank (Chris Pine), el dueño de la empresa del mismo nombre, esta comunidad se encuentra en medio del desierto y es exclusivamente para que vivan los trabajadores de la empresa y sus familias. Las mujeres de esta comunidad se dedican a hacer felices a sus maridos, a tener vida social con sus vecinas y a ser felices. Los hombres salen a trabajar muy temprano por la mañana y regresan por la tarde. Tienen en Victoria una vida llena de lujos, fiestas y sin preocupaciones.

In the 1950s community of Victoria, Alice (Florence Pugh) a young wife begins to suspect that something is wrong at the mysterious company where her husband Jack (Harry Styles) works.

Durante la primera parte de la película todo es fiesta y la rutina de un ama de casa que no tiene muchas obligaciones y ocupa su tiempo con sus vecinos yendo de compras o al ballet. Hasta que algo cambia en Alice y empieza a sentir que lo que está ocurriendo no es del todo normal y al no tener conocimiento de las actividades que tienen lugar en Victoria, ya que las mujeres no están al tanto porque la información que los maridos comparten con sus esposas es muy limitada, Alice atribuye su cambio de perspectiva a la empresa en la que trabaja su marido.

Frank y su esposa Shelley (Gemma Chan) son los dueños de Victoria, obsesionados con el control, la armonía, la belleza y el poder que conlleva poseer toda una comunidad, donde sus habitantes viven a su ritmo y deseos. Son los más queridos y envidiados, es un honor para cualquiera de los trabajadores que Frank les invite a su casa o acepte una invitación suya, eso sería como subir un peldaño que les da estatus en la sociedad.

Alice tiene una mejor amiga y vecina Bunny (Olivia Wilde) a la que acude en busca de apoyo, pero ella no le cree porque es feliz y se siente afortunada de vivir en Victoria y al igual que su esposo Jack tratan de hacerla entrar en razón y de convencerla que posiblemente el estrés y otras situaciones que se viven en Victoria la están afectando mentalmente.

During the first part of the film everything is a party and the routine of a housewife who does not have many obligations and occupies her time with her neighbors going shopping or to the ballet. Until something changes in Alice and she begins to feel that what is happening is not quite normal and having no knowledge of the activities taking place in Victoria, as women are not aware because the information husbands share with their wives is very limited, Alice attributes her change of perspective to the company in which her husband works.

Frank and his wife Shelley (Gemma Chan) are the owners of Victoria, obsessed with control, harmony, beauty and the power that comes with owning an entire community, where its inhabitants live at their own pace and desires. They are the most loved and envied, it is an honor for any of the workers that Frank invites them to his house or accepts an invitation from them, that would be like climbing a step that gives them status in society.

Alice has a best friend and neighbor Bunny (Olivia Wilde) who she turns to for support, but she doesn’t believe her because she is happy and feels fortunate to live in Victoria and her husband Jack tries to talk some sense into her and convince her that possibly the stress and other situations in Victoria are affecting her mentally.

Es una película que te deja con muchas preguntas, durante todo el desarrollo te imaginas que al final te van a dar respuestas coherentes a muchas escenas pero eso no ocurre, aunque al final te explican parte de los acontecimientos, el por qué y cómo llegaron a Victoria, te quedas un poco insatisfecho. Pues eso me pasó a mi y como ya he dicho la he vuelto a ver varias veces pero no he encontrado una explicación lógica a algunas cosas.

Así que puedo decir que he visto esta película porque me gusta la imagen, el vestuario y creo que destaca la actuación de Florence y me gusta Harry Styles, no sé si tengo preferencia por este periodo de la historia y eso hace que quiera verla repetidas veces, pero sigue habiendo escenas que me parecen innecesarias y que no aportan nada al desarrollo o explicación de nada, como algunas que están en blanco y negro, bueno si quitamos eso la película puede que no me parezca tan mala.

It is a film that leaves you with many questions, throughout the development you imagine that in the end they will give you coherent answers to many scenes but that does not happen, although at the end they explain part of the events, why and how they came to Victoria, you are left a little unsatisfied. Well, that happened to me and as I said I have watched it again several times but I have not found a logical explanation to some things.

So I can say that I have seen this movie because I like the image, the costumes and I think Florence’s performance stands out and I like Harry Styles, I do not know if I have a preference for this period of history and that makes me want to see it repeatedly, but there are still scenes that seem unnecessary and do not contribute anything to the development or explanation of anything, like some that are in black and white, well if we remove that the film may not seem so bad to me.

Es más, siento que podría haber una segunda parte para darnos un poco más de la historia, ya que sentí que tenía un parecido con la película “Las Mujeres Perfectas” pero este aspecto no se llegó a desarrollar como para darnos una explicación o para saber si mi teoría era acertada, entonces me hubiera gustado un poco más de desarrollo de los personajes.

Espero que mi reseña no sea motivo para que no quieras ver esta película, te aseguro que estéticamente es perfecta, encontrarás escenas en la que el termómetro subirá un poco la temperatura y otras en las que querrás pertenece a Victoria, eso es antes de conocer el final descabellado que tiene. De igual manera te invito a verla y a crear tu propia opinión sobre está película.

Also, I feel there could have been a sequel to give us a little more of the story, as I felt it had a resemblance to the movie “The Perfect Women” but this aspect was not developed enough to give us an explanation or know if my theory was correct, so I would have liked a little more character development.

I hope my review is not a reason for you not to want to see this movie, I assure you that aesthetically it is perfect, you will find scenes in which the thermometer will raise your temperature a little and others in which you will want to belong to Victoria, that’s before knowing the crazy ending it has. I invite you to watch it and create your own opinion about this movie.
