Review of the new live-action movie He-Man and the Masters of the Universe 🍿💀 [ENG-ESP]

I was born in the ’80s, so I grew up watching all those animated series that aired in the afternoons on broadcast TV. Among my all-time favorites were, without a doubt, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power. So when I found out I’d have the chance to see a new live-action He-Man movie, my expectations were sky-high. It’s worth noting that I never saw the first adaptation from 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren; and to be honest, after enjoying this new release, I don’t really feel like seeking out the old one either.

Soy nacida en la década de los 80, así que crecí viendo en televisión abierta todas esas series animadas que transmitían por las tardes. Entre mis grandes favoritas estaban, sin duda, He-Man y los Amos del Universo y She-Ra: La Princesa del Poder. Por eso, cuando me enteré de que tendría la oportunidad de ver una nueva película live-action de He-Man, la expectativa fue enorme. Vale aclarar que la primera adaptación de 1987, protagonizada por Dolph Lundgren, nunca la vi; y para ser sincera, tras disfrutar de este nuevo estreno, tampoco me quedan muchas ganas de buscar la vieja.

For those unfamiliar with the premise, the story centers on Adam, a boy who is the Prince of Eternia, a distant and beautiful planet where, despite its peace, evil exists. The main villain is Skeletor, who seeks to take over Eternia and seize the legendary Sword of Power, kept safe in Castle Grayskull. During a nighttime attack by Skeletor, the Guardian Witch sends young Adam to Earth—his mother’s home planet—through a three-dimensional portal. During the journey, the boy loses the sword, and it takes him 15 years to find it.

While Adam grows up on Earth as an ordinary boy and desperately searches for the sword that will return him home, Skeletor has destroyed nearly all of Eternia and is holding his parents captive. However, the Royal Guard continues to resist in the shadows, waiting only for the moment when Adam raises the sword to the sky and sends the signal to return. The signal is for him to say the words that thrill anyone who grew up with them: “By the power of Grayskull! I have the power!” 😁

Para quienes no conocen la premisa, la historia se centra en Adam, un niño que es el Príncipe de Eternia, un planeta lejano y hermoso donde, a pesar de su paz, existe la maldad. El gran villano es Skeletor, quien busca apoderarse de Eternia y de la legendaria Espada del Poder, resguardada en el Castillo de Grayskull. Durante un ataque nocturno de Skeletor, la Bruja guardiana envía al pequeño Adam a la Tierra que es el planeta de origen de su madre, a través de un portal tridimensional. En ese cruce, el niño pierde la espada y tarda 15 años en poder encontrarla.

Mientras Adam crece en la Tierra como un chico común y busca desesperadamente la espada que lo regrese a su hogar, Skeletor ha destruido casi toda Eternia y mantiene a sus padres secuestrados. No obstante, la Guardia Real sigue resistiendo en la sombra, esperando únicamente el momento en que Adam alce la espada al cielo y envíe la señal de regreso, la señal es que diga las palabras que emocionan a cualquiera que haya crecido con ellas "¡Por el poder de Grayskull! ¡Yo tengo el poder!" 😁

I have to say that the movie is thrilling from the very first minute; I thought everything about it was spot on. I loved it so much that I’ve already seen it twice; I liked it even more the second time than the first, and I wouldn’t rule out watching it again. I thought Nicholas Galitzine’s portrayal of Prince Adam was perfect: he manages to convey that shy and cowardly personality that suddenly transforms into the imposing Warrior of Grayskull, becoming exactly the superhero I remembered from my childhood.

The rest of the main cast was equally impressive. Camila Mendes as Teela and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms do a great job, as does Jared Leto as the villain Skeletor. If there was one thing I remembered from the cartoon, it was that evil, sarcastic laugh that never rubbed off on anyone; here, they recreate it in a way that inevitably makes you smile when he’s the only one laughing and his henchmen either don’t understand why or play along so he won’t get upset.

Debo decir que la película es emocionante desde el primer minuto; todo me pareció sumamente acertado. Me encantó a tal punto que ya la he visto dos veces, las segunda vez me gustó más que la primera y no descarto volverla a ver. La interpretación de Nicholas Galitzine como el Príncipe Adam me pareció perfecta: logra transmitir esa personalidad tímida y cobarde que de repente se transforma en el imponente Guerrero de Grayskull, convirtiéndose exactamente en el superhéroe que recordaba de mi niñez.

El resto del elenco principal estuvo a la altura. Camila Mendes como Teela e Idris Elba en el papel de Duncan / Man-At-Arms hacen un trabajo genial y Jared Leto encarnando al villano Skeletor. Si algo recordaba de la comiquita era esa risa malvada y sarcástica que no contagiaba a nadie; aquí la recrean de una forma que inevitablemente te saca una sonrisa cuando el único que se ríe es el y sus secuases no entienden el por qué o le siguen el juego para que no se moleste.

As for the production, I was fascinated by the use of color. The visuals are full of life yet maintain incredible visual quality in the settings and character design—especially the villains, considering they’re monsters. It’s clear this was a project that took years to bring to life, as every detail was carefully crafted to evoke nostalgia in fans of the animated series and leave us feeling deeply satisfied by the end. In the case of Skeletor, it’s wonderful: although the actor isn’t immediately recognizable due to his skull-like face, Jared Leto proves that these kinds of eccentric characters suit him perfectly. Plus, the combat and action scenes are very well executed.

Although it may not be the massive, hyper-commercial blockbuster everyone is talking about on social media, I think it’s a movie worth watching and enjoying, especially for those of us who grew up with the original cartoon. Plus, the post-credits scene treats us to a spectacular nod with the appearance of Princess She-Ra. Now I’m eagerly awaiting a sequel where these siblings reunite on screen, since She-Ra was, without a doubt, my absolute favorite.

En cuanto a la producción, me fascinó el uso del color. La imagen es llena de vida pero mantiene una calidad visual increíble en los ambientes y en el diseño de los personajes, especialmente en los villanos, considerando que son monstruos. Se nota que fue un proyecto que tomó años en ejecutarse, pues cada detalle estuvo pensado para despertar la nostalgia en los fanáticos de la serie animada y dejarnos con una gran satisfacción al terminar. En el caso de Skeletor es maravilloso: aunque por su rostro de calavera no se distingue a simple vista al actor, Jared Leto demuestra que este tipo de personajes extravagantes le sientan como anillo al dedo. Además las escenas de combate y acción están muy bien ejecutadas.

Aunque quizás no sea el gran éxito de taquilla hipercomercial del que todo el mundo habla en redes sociales, considero que es una película digna de ver y disfrutar, especialmente para quienes crecimos con la comiquita original. Además, la escena post-créditos nos regala un guiño espectacular con la aparición de la Princesa She-Ra. Ahora espero con ansias una secuela donde estos hermanos se reencuentren en pantalla, pues She-Ra era, sin duda, mi gran favorita.
