"What Dreams May Come" tells a story centered on a plot that highlights several themes that cause us great anxiety in our lives: death, eternal life, and a love capable of overcoming all existing barriers. This brief premise forms the basis of the plot, in which Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams) meets a beautiful woman named Annie (Annabella Sciorra), with whom he forms a very special bond that leads them to share their lives. Over time, they have two children, and what seems to be unfolding as a beautiful story of love and family suddenly turns into a true nightmare. Their children die in an accident, and the pain of such a tragedy pushes Annie to her limit, to the point where she believes her marriage must also come to an end.
"What dreams may come" encierra una historia bajo un plot en donde resaltan varios temas que nos causan mucha inquietud en nuestra vida: la muerte, el vivir para siempre y un amor que pueda superar todas las barreras existentes. Este pequeño concepto es la base de la trama en donde Chris Nielsen ( Robin Williams) conoce a una bella mujer llamada Annie (Annabella Sciorra) con quién logra hacer una conexión muy especial que los lleva a compartir sus vidas. Con el tiempo llegan a tener dos hijos y lo que parece encaminarse como una hermosa historia de amor y familia de pronto se convierte en una verdadera pesadilla. Sus hijos mueren en un accidente y el dolor ante semejante tragedia lleva al extremo a Annie a tal punto de pensar que su matrimonio también tiene que llegar a su fin.
The film jumps forward in time, and now we see Chris and Annie together, each going about their work and trying to move on despite a wound that never stops hurting. That’s when everything comes crashing down again for Annie upon learning that her husband Chris has died in a highway accident, and from this point on, the film seems to unfold on two levels: the real world, where Annie is now completely alone, and another where Chris and others go after they die. At first, Chris wants to stay with his wife to support and help her, but it’s all in vain, and so he resigns himself to his reality: he’s dead. But things aren’t all that bad when Chris realizes he’s now in a special place—one that seems to have been built on his fondest memories of the life he once enjoyed alongside his family.
La película da un salto en el tiempo y ahora vemos a Chris y Annie juntos, cada quien en su trabajo y tratando de seguir adelante a pesar de una herida que no deja de doler. Es entonces cuando para Annie todo vuelve a derrumbarse al enterarse de que su esposo Chris muere en un accidente en la autopista y desde aquí la película parece mostrarse en dos planos, en el mundo real donde ahora Annie ha quedado totalmente sola, y otro en donde Chris y otros más van después de morir. Al principio Chris desea quedarse con su esposa para apoyarla y ayudarla pero todo es en vano, y por lo tanto este hombre se resigna a su realidad: está muerto. Pero no todo llega a ser tan malo cuando Chris se da cuenta que ahora está en un lugar especial, uno que parece haberse construido en base a sus mejores recuerdos de la vida que alguna vez disfrutó al lado de su familia.
Chris’s children are also in that place, although at first they aren’t shown in their true form but rather appear with the physical characteristics of people who became important to him or caught his attention at some point in his life. Of his two children, the connection with his daughter Marie seems to be stronger and closer, and the film illustrates this through a very beautiful scene of their reunion. Speaking of connections, Chris never fails to sense the pain and sadness his wife is going through until one day he learns of a tragedy: his wife has taken her own life. At first, this seems acceptable to Chris, since, after all, his wife would be reunited with him and their children, but the reality is that because she deliberately took her own life, she belongs in another place—a dark and empty place that is the complete opposite of where her family is.
Los hijos de Chris también están en ese lugar, aunque al principio no se muestran en su esencia real sino que se presentan bajo las características físicas de personas que llegaron a ser importantes o llamaron la atención de su padre en algún momento de su vida. Entre sus dos hijos, la conexión con su hija Marie parece ser más fuerte y estrecha y esto lo deja ver la película ante una escena de reencuentro entre ellos muy bonita. Hablando de conexiones, Chris no deja de percibir el dolor y la tristeza que su esposa está viviendo hasta que cierto día se entera de algo trágico: su esposa se ha quitado la vida. Esto al principio le parece aceptable a Chris ya que al fin y al cabo su esposa se reuniría con él y con sus hijos, pero el detalle es que por ella quitarse la vida deliberadamente le corresponde estar en otro lugar, un lugar oscuro y vacío totalmente opuesto a donde está su familia.
It is here that Chris, driven by his love for Annie, decides to defy all odds to rescue her, and after a long journey, he unexpectedly reaches her. Everything seems to indicate that there is nothing to be done, and so Chris decides to stay by his wife’s side, even if it’s in the worst place imaginable. What will the true ending be? The film leaves the door open and presents a scenario where we sense that love transcends everything and is capable of achieving even what seems impossible to us. What Chris and Annie had hoped for in their lives, they finally achieved—but in a different setting, a kind of paradise created to turn dreams into a beautiful reality.
"What Dreams May Come" is a movie that, in my opinion, draws on those ideas and philosophies that place love above all else. Living forever and being in a place that—based on your beliefs—becomes the perfect home you once dreamed of is something the movie portrays through various nuances that also weave into the story of a family with a deep emotional bond—a family that, despite tragedies, has managed, so to speak, reach their longed-for destination—albeit via a path that began full of sadness and pain but ultimately highlighted the greatest of all emotions: love.
Es aquí donde Chris en base al amor que siente por Annie decide ir en contra de todo a fin de rescatarla y luego de una larga travesía de manera inesperada llega hasta ella. Todo parece indicar que no hay nada por hacer, y por eso Chris decide quedarse al lado de su esposa así sea en el peor lugar que pueda existir. ¿Cuál llegará a ser el verdadero final? La película nos deja una puerta abierta y un escenario donde se percibe que el amor está por encima de todo y que es capaz de lograr hasta lo que nos parece imposible. Lo que Chris y Annie habían pensado tener en su vida por fin lo lograron pero en un escenario distinto, una especie de paraíso creado para hacer de los sueños una hermosa realidad.
"What dreams may come" es una película que en mi opinión apela a esos razonamientos e ideologías que destacan el amor por encima de todo. El vivir para siempre y estar en un lugar que en base a lo que crees se convierte en el hogar perfecto que una vez soñaste es algo que la película muestra bajo varios matices que también se unen a la historia de una familia con una gran conexión sentimental y que pese a las tragedias han podido, por así decirlo, llegar a su anhelado destino aunque por un camino que empezó lleno de tristeza y dolor para terminar resaltando el sentimiento más grande como lo es el amor.
