Swiss Army Man: las (¿surrealistas?) aventuras de un náufrago

Saludos cariñosos a la comunidad de cinéfilos de Movies & TV Shows, es un placer traer a ustedes una nueva reseña, de una película que ya tiene seis años de estrenada. Se trata de Swiss Army Man, una loca y conmovedora historia de aventura.

Es la ópera prima de The Daniels, unos originales cineastas que han dado mucho de qué hablar después de su segundo largometraje Todo en todas partes al mismo tiempo, lo que me llevó a investigar y descubrir que además son parte del estudio A24, que nos han traido otras grandes películas, algunas las hemos visto sin saber que se trataba del nuevo cine que está naciendo, ese que no requiere tantos efectos especiales ni explosiones de automóviles para generar grandes escenas. Lo que nos traslada al hecho de que ver películas se convierta en un acto humano y artístico, en lugar de solo mero entretenimiento.

Se trata de una historia muy loca y absurda, pero ésta extravagancia nos acerca increíblemente, a temas realmente humanos, es además una crítica a la modernidad y a la sociedad misma. Y sin saber cómo nos lleva a sentir empatía por sus protagonistas, Hank un naufragó en una isla desierta y quien se convierte en su mejor amigo, Manny, un cadáver que encuentra a la orilla de la playa y de quien se hace muy amigo.

La sinopsis de filmaffinity nos adelanta:

Comedia. Aventuras. Fantástico Tras una larga temporada aislado en una isla desierta, Hank encuentra compañía en el flatulento cadáver de un joven que el agua ha traído hasta la orilla. Poco a poco, el náufrago y el cadáver desarrollan una hermosa amistad.

Swiss Army Man está muy bien protagonizada por Paul Dano (Hank) como nuestro náufrago que ha perdido la esperanza y la razón para seguir viviendo y Daniel Radcliffe (Manny) como el cadáver que viene a salvarlo y a darle una nueva razón a su existencia. Dano nos muestra una actuación impecable, mostrando la locura a la que podemos llegar los humanos en una situación límite, pero no está del todo loco, y su actuación da fe de eso. Radcliffe no solo nos hace sentir empatía con su actuación de cadáver con superpoderes, también es capaz de despertar una profunda ternura por su personaje. De hecho estoy firmemente decidida a dejar de llamarlo Harry Potter y a usar su nombre, que bien se lo ha ganado.

Esta semana estuve viendo las atrocidades que ocurren en la selva de Darién, frontera entre Colombia y Panamá, donde los venezolanos, huyendo de la crisis venezolana, han pasado por tan horribles situaciones. Que de inmediato hago la analogía y llego a la conclusión que todo lo que transcurre en Swiss Army Man no es tan absurdo como parece a primera vista.

Frase de Swiss Army Man:

"Pero tal vez todos somos un poco feos. Sí, tal vez todos seamos simplemente feos, moribundos, sacos de mierda y tal vez todo lo que se necesita es una persona para estar de acuerdo con eso".

De verdad es una película existencialista, que aborda temas con el amor, la amistad, la soledad, la muerte. Y todo bajo el manto protector de un ambiente que se muestra hostil ante Hank, un millennial acostumbrado al auto-aislamiento que le ofrece su iPad en el transporte público. Pero al estar en un aislamiento impuesto por circunstancias desconocidas (para nosotros), la realidad viene a ser otra y sus pensamientos y emociones, van cargadas de esa locura, que solo aparece en casos extremos.

Recordaremos como Tom Hanks se hizo amigo de un balón llamado Willson, con el que habla y al que tuvo que abandonar después, producto de una gran decisión en la que se debatía entre soltar cualquier esperanza y entregarse a la locura o soltar esa chispa y volver a la realidad habiendo aprendido de la experiencia vivida, y así como entendemos que esto nos acerca a la humanidad intrínseca, así debemos asumir el hecho que Hank, el personaje de Paul Dano, no sólo vivió un éxtasis de locura al lado de Manny, también desechó la idea y volvió al lugar de partida con un marcado aprendizaje sobre lo que nos hace ser sociables y gregarios.

Hay un tono surrealista en la película, que genera una duda, quizás cuando llegamos al final, no sabemos si lo que hemos visto pasó o solo fue la gran imaginación de Hank. Pues para la narrativa de la película, todo pasó tal y como nos fue contado. Y yo les creo, porque creo fervientemente que cuando todo parece perdido es que comienzan a aparecer los milagros. Y no digamos milagros, hablemos más bien de Realismo mágico, ese realismo que no hace entrever lo maravilloso del momento, a pesar de ser el peor de los momentos.

De verdad creo, la película hizo que lo hiciera, en la veracidad de lo que aconteció en aquella selva inhóspita, que una persona en la posición de total aislamiento, sin comida ni contacto alguno pueda hablar y establecer una linda amistad con un cadáver, no está ni cerca de parecer real, pero se asemeja mucho a esos momento de quiebre en donde parece que perdemos la cordura como elemento de supervivencia mental, esa que nos ayuda a mantener la vida ante desastres mayores.

Está catalogada como comedia negra con drama, mucho drama, pero la paleta de colores juega a algo más, prefiere decantarse por el contenido ligero de la comedia, mientras no asesta un gancho al costado que nos hace poner en tela de juicio nuestra vida misma. Llenando de grandes metáforas el sentido de la vida y sembrando preguntas en nuestras mentes, con el fin de aceptarnos, y empujarnos a tomar el riesgo de ser nosotros mismos.

Porque si de algo podemos estar seguros, es que de esta película vamos a salir con grandes reflexiones sobre la vida misma, reflexiones que, en esta época, nos atañe a todos, y que además vamos a disfrutar y aprender sobre esto sin darnos cuenta siquiera. Porque con su cuidada fotografía y lo hilarante de sus diálogos, nos va a entrar (como decimos en mi país) con vaselina.

Warm greetings to the Movies & TV Shows movie buff community, it is a pleasure to bring you a new review of a movie that has already been released six years ago. It is Swiss Army Man, a crazy and touching adventure story.

It is the debut feature of The Daniels, some original filmmakers who have given a lot to talk about after their second feature film Everything Everywhere at the Same Time, which led me to investigate and discover that they are also part of the A24 studio, who have brought us other great films, some of which we have seen without knowing that it was the new cinema that is being born, that which does not require so many special effects or car explosions to generate great scenes. This brings us to the fact that watching movies becomes a human and artistic act, instead of mere entertainment.

It is a very crazy and absurd story, but this extravagance brings us incredibly close to really human issues, it is also a critique of modernity and society itself. And without knowing how it leads us to feel empathy for its protagonists, Hank, a shipwrecked man on a desert island and who becomes his best friend, Manny, a corpse he finds on the shore of the beach and with whom he becomes close friends.

Swiss Army Man stars Paul Dano (Hank) as our castaway who has lost hope and the reason to go on living and Daniel Radcliffe (Manny) as the corpse who comes to save him and give him a new reason for his existence. Dano shows us an impeccable performance, showing the madness to which we humans can reach in a limit situation, but he is not completely crazy, and his performance attests to that. Radcliffe not only makes us empathize with his performance as a corpse with superpowers, he is also able to arouse a deep tenderness for his character. In fact I am firmly resolved to stop calling him Harry Potter and use his name, which he has well earned.

This week I was watching the atrocities occurring in the Darien jungle, border between Colombia and Panama, where Venezuelans, fleeing the Venezuelan crisis, have gone through such horrible situations. I immediately make the analogy and come to the conclusion that everything that happens in Swiss Army Man is not as absurd as it seems at first glance.

Swiss Army Man quote:

"But maybe we're all just a little ugly. Yeah, maybe we're all just ugly, dying, sacks of shit and maybe all it takes is one person to go along with that."

It is truly an existentialist film that deals with love, friendship, loneliness and death. And all under the protective mantle of an environment that is hostile to Hank, a millennial accustomed to the self-isolation offered by his iPad on public transport. But being in an isolation imposed by unknown circumstances (for us), the reality becomes another and his thoughts and emotions, are loaded with that madness, which only appears in extreme cases.

We will remember how Tom Hanks became friends with a ball named Willson, with whom he talks and whom he had to abandon afterwards, product of a great decision in which he debated between letting go of any hope and surrendering to madness or letting go of that spark and returning to reality having learned from the lived experience, and just as we understand that this brings us closer to intrinsic humanity, so we must come to terms with the fact that Hank, Paul Dano's character, not only lived an ecstasy of madness at Manny's side, he also threw away the idea and returned to the place of departure with a marked learning about what makes us sociable and gregarious.

There is a surreal tone in the film, which generates a doubt, perhaps when we get to the end, we do not know if what we have seen happened or it was just Hank's great imagination. Well, for the narrative of the film, everything happened just as it was told to us. And I believe them, because I fervently believe that it is when all seems lost that miracles begin to appear. And let's not say miracles, let's talk more about magical realism, that realism that does not make us glimpse the wonder of the moment, even though it is the worst of times.

I really believe, the film made me do it, in the veracity of what happened in that inhospitable jungle, that a person in the position of total isolation, without food or any contact can talk and establish a nice friendship with a corpse, is not even close to seem real, but it is very similar to those moments of breakdown where it seems that we lose our sanity as an element of mental survival, that which helps us to maintain life in the face of major disasters.

It is categorized as a black comedy with drama, a lot of drama, but the color palette plays to something else, preferring to opt for the light comedy content, while not delivering a hook to the side that makes us question our own lives. Filling with great metaphors the meaning of life and sowing questions in our minds, in order to accept ourselves, and push us to take the risk of being ourselves.

Because if there is one thing we can be sure of, it is that we will come out of this film with great reflections on life itself, reflections that, in this era, concern us all, and that we will also enjoy and learn about it without even realizing it. Because with its careful photography and the hilariousness of its dialogues, it is going to enter us (as we say in my country) with vaseline.
