Good evening, splendid Hive platform, it's a pleasure to be with you again. I extend my greetings to the project https://scrobble.life/, blessings to all. I'm pleased to share another Beatles song with you, along with my own reflections, things I've learned from them, and my own opinions and tastes. Today I'll be discussing an early Lennon track called "I Call Your Name." I'll proceed with great pleasure to delve into it.

This song is very special to me, as I remember owning several of their cassettes and noticing that it didn't appear on any official albums at the time it was recorded. Of course, over the years I learned the story behind its absence during that period; it was included on a special album released in the United States. I'll share some more details about this song later in the post.

The Beatles began recording and editing this song between March and May 1964. On June 4, 1964, a mono mix of the official EMI recording was released, which was ultimately used in Great Britain for the EP "Long Tall Sally" (an EP was a recording format containing four songs; technically, it was a double single, meaning four songs appeared instead of two. Throughout their years of activity, the Beatles released several EPs - Extended Plays - at different times).

Several takes of this song were recorded, with take 7, recorded around this time, being the one they valued most. So much so that mono and stereo versions of take 7 would later appear on various official albums and compilations. The fascinating thing about this song lies not so much in its musical quality, but in the song itself. The lyrics tell a story of heartbreak and despair, presumably due to the loss of a loved one. For years, there has been speculation as to whether this loss was the loss of a romantic partner or the loss of his mother's love, since it is known that this song belongs to Lennon's repertoire from his turbulent and sad teenage years, written between 1956 and 1957, long before the first lineup of the group emerged.

The song appeared around 1964 on the North American album "Second Album," along with other tracks from their first two British albums. Scholars say they compiled this mix of songs to satisfy the demand for Beatles material in North America, coincidentally around the time they were filming their first movie, "A Hard Day's Night," in mid-1964. They didn't include this song on the "A Hard Day's Night" album because they had already selected and completed "You Can't Do That," which is musically very similar to "I Call Your Name," as both songs feature the sound of a cowbell.

Special musical aspects of this song:

John Lennon - Lead vocals, rhythm guitar George Harrison - Lead guitar Paul McCartney - Bass guitar Ringo Starr – Drums, cowbell

Sourse The Beatles' attempt to imitate blue beat (or ska) in this song was somewhat clumsy but audacious. Paul switched to a walking bass line, Ringo emphasized a swinging drum rhythm, and Harrison played a syncopated version of the guitar solo heard in the Billy J. Kramer version (Billy J. Kramer was another band of the time, to whom Lennon gave this track to record). All together, it sounds ska-like in the second part of the song, almost randomly, but with the awareness that this style didn't quite fit with what they were doing at that stage. Even in those early, primitive moments, innovation seemed to dominate and distinguish their masterful work. Currently, the song is available worldwide on various compilations, the most popular being Rarities (1979), Beatles Rock and Roll (1976), Second Album (1964), and Past Master Vol. 1 (1988), as well as on countless current digital music and video platforms.

I don't know much about this band; I wasn't even born yet, haha, but I know they were really good back in the day. In fact, they made a movie about John Lennon; I think I might have seen it—I'm not sure—but their songs were definitely great, and people are still listening to them today. It never hurts to learn a little more about good music. Thanks for sharing this review of this famous band. Best regards.

I haven't heard the song yet, but I'm going to look for it. But yes, it's very true that the music from those great bands is endless. There must be many songs they created that were never released to the public. Now things have changed; they work on a single hit and seek fame through just one song.
