Hey Jesspace Explorers
I'm a sucker for a suitable space flick, and I have to say in recent years there hasn't been many to choose from so when I saw the trailer for Ad Astra I was pretty excited about taking a trip to space and enjoying a solid Sifi flick.
Having Brad Pitt lead the movie and roping in Armageddon actors Liv Tyler and Tommy Lee Jones as supporting characters I thought the film had the elements of what could be an enjoyable thrill ride into the unknown.
So I loaded it up on my laptop grabbed some snacks and dove right in, lol four times. Yes, I fell asleep four times over the past two weekends trying to watch this movie, it was slow-paced, and I struggled to pay attention but was it worth the four attempts, let's see!

What Is Ad Astra about?
Thirty years ago, Clifford McBride led a voyage into deep space, but the ship and crew were never heard from again.
Years later, his son Roy who follows in his absent dad's footsteps becomes a fearless astronaut. While on a mission, the earth is hit by a significant shock wave coming from Neptune with Roy being one of the only survivors.
He is then told his father may still be alive and that he must embark on a daring mission to Neptune to uncover the truth about his missing father and a mysterious power surge that threatens the stability of the universe.

What I thought of Ad Astra?
As you can tell from the synopsis of the story, the movie takes some liberties with science, and while I am open to dispelling my belief, this movie walks a pretty weird line.
It sometimes tries to be a realistic space movie and other times, it just seems ultimately out of touch with its reality and carves a new one for itself.
It feels like two ideas were drawn up for this movie and they thought hey instead of making two films that could flop let's make one shit sandwich for the audience to enjoy and hopefully make back our budget and a little profit.
Its basically a story of Brad Pitt having daddy and abandonment issues and issues with relationships in general, which happens to be set in space. The movie brings nothing new to the space genre and is a generic script so full of plot holes you wish that it was a black hole so it could swallow this entire mess past the event horizon never to be seen again.
My rating for Ad Astra?
The visuals are amazing on this film, and the costume and set design make you feel like you are on an epic space race but other than that, it's pretty empty, like deep space. The plot makes no sense; the subplots are so random and do nothing for the overall narrative.
The characters decision making is all over the place you have to cringe, and once you get done with this 2-hour snore-fest, the pay off is pretty weak.
I'll have to give this movie 4 angry space monkeys out of 10
