Ad Astra" is a science fiction drama film directed by James Gray and starring Brad Pitt. The story follows an astronaut named Roy McBride, who embarks on a journey across the solar system in search of his missing father, who is believed to be involved in experiments that threaten human existence.

As Roy ventures into the unknown, the film attempts to explore themes of loneliness, human connection and the search for meaning in a vast and desolate universe. However, despite its ambition, "Ad Astra" fails to reach the cosmic heights it sets out to achieve.

The film has received mixed reviews, praising Brad Pitt's performance, but questioning its slow pace and pretentious approach. Some find it a visually stunning experience, while others find it dull and emotionally disconnected.

In "Ad Astra", the main protagonist is played by the talented Brad Pitt. He takes on the role of Roy McBride, an astronaut on a mission to find his missing father and uncover the truth behind a series of events that could threaten humanity's survival. Pitt delivers a nuanced performance, capturing the introspective and emotionally restrained nature of Roy's character

Tommy Lee Jones plays Clifford McBride, Roy's father and a renowned astronaut who disappeared years ago. Jones brings his trademark earnestness to the role, portraying a complex and enigmatic character.

In addition, Liv Tyler appears as Eve, Roy's estranged wife. Although her screen time is limited, Tyler manages to convey a sense of longing and emotional depth in her few scenes.

The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on August 29, 2019 and was released theatrically in the United States on September 20, 2019, grossed $127 million worldwide against a budget of $100 million.

Personally, I thought it handled some interesting themes but it was very slow and the special effects were not the best.

Greetings Hivers, happy weekend to all. Last night as I was browsing through netflix trends and highlights to watch and came across this sci-fi plot that caught my eye.

It stars Brad Pitt who I always find does a terrific job, and I also got to see the performance of the actor who plays Snow (Donald Sutherland) in "The Hunger Games", as cold and direct as ever.

I love the beginning of this movie because it lets us see the earth from the beauty of the universe. Many times people wonder if it really looks like that, between shades of blue and full of clouds. I think it must look like that.

I don't think I have that love for being in space, much less the fact that I have to go out in a suit to fix something on a satellite or spacecraft, but well, I'm not an astronaut (nor do I want to be, how scary).

However, here Brad Pitt shows us a little bit how risky things can be beyond the heights. That sci-fi touch for me is when we see that after a catastrophe he manages to survive.

I've always known that astronauts who fall from space to earth must do so with a special craft that can withstand the heat. I don't know much about science but in most movies it is shown that what falls to earth is incinerated in a certain way, so a suit or body is not enough to be able to appease such collateral damage.

It immediately made me think that Pitt's role here was that of someone supernatural, perhaps an alien or machine, but even then being someone made of metal the skin would have torn off his body and exposed the metallic body.

The point is that he managed to survive but the rest of his companions did not have the same luck. This in a way catapulted him in his area of work, perhaps becoming someone very important for NASA. I mean, the odds of that happening are almost unthinkable.

After some psychological and physical examinations, this man is given the task of finding the crew in charge of a secret project, because apparently something went wrong and caused the natural forces to get out of control on earth.

I thought that the barriers of the trip were going to be that if the long journey, some meteorites or things other than finding out that on the moon there were pirates (name given to the rebel colonizers backed by other countries).

First time I see shooting and chase on the Moon, a place where the gravity is totally different from the Earth, so the weapons must be less heavy but the shots, I think, should be just as light at the time of impact or discharge.

Along the way he discovers the possibility that his father is still alive and that he is the cause of the phenomena on earth, so he becomes a high-risk person who must be found and whose project must be destroyed.

However, I believe that there are a series of conspiracies against Pitt that make him take actions against what he wants or what he hides, because there is also a mental game that makes us think that he is not quite right in the head and that he seems to be a great threat.

When he discovers the truth of everything, he takes action on what must be done to save the earth and his loved ones.

One of the things that we must take into account is that it is a plot of two voices, that is, what he does and what he thinks is also narrated, this is important when it comes to draw conclusions and learn more about the character played by Pitt.

In my opinion it is a rather confusing plot, the person they were looking for was dedicated to explore the universe in search of more life or even extraterrestrials. Maybe to colonize or just probe. Pitt basically became or is what his father does, but the approach they give his character seems to imply that it's more about the ravages of being an astronaut. Everything he leaves behind, the people, the love and resentment he has for his father.

The truth is that there is no root theme or something that can be understood at a glance or even watching the whole movie which seems to me to be quite long and slow. It's not bad, but it's not to recommend it beyond watching the wonders of the universe.

  3. Ad Astra (2019)@minhajulmredol1293d

Maybe the desire for a space movie, or Brad Pitt, or someone's recommendation led me to watch "Ad Astra" Before jumping into this one, in my head, Interstellar and The Martian was going on with the genre of space-related sci-fi movies. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting to go beyond them as this kinda desire can't be met every time. So, overall I was expecting a good experience keeping aside any comparison and so I dived into it.

    hhlptxt4pfp7_t.jpg Image source

"Ad Astra" is a science fiction adventure film that takes you on a tour of the future possibilities in space. James Gray is the director of the film and he is also the writer along with Ethan Gross. One of the key things about this film is that it stars Brad Pitt which could be the interest of many behind watching this one.

Brad Pitt as Roy McBride who is a Major in the U.S Space Command, son of H. Clifford McBride, who was also a famous astronaut. From the start, we get a decent characteristic attitude from Roy, even in the deadliest situations his heartbeat doesn't go above 80 bpm, this can be understood from his way of talking and performing. Actually, the main part of the story is about his father, who was working on a project named Lima 29 years ago, whose mission was to search for intelligent life in space, and this project almost vanished after they reached Neptune 16 years of their mission. At present, something from the Lima project is causing mysterious power surges which are threatening the current infrastructure and projects and the source of these occurrences is expected from the anti-matters of The Lima Project which created a possibility that the project and Roy's father is alive somewhere in Neptune and it must be stopped. So, somehow he is on a mission to find his father who was dead to him for years and now destiny came in such a way, obviously, there are hindrances in the way that spices the storyline.

Now about the thoughts and opinions, first of all, I have realized the slow pace of the film. It is continued without any rush, very calmly and slowly. Not filled with extreme thrills and excitement that would give you an adrenalin rush like the ones I mentioned in the beginning, dragged them just to make you understand. But the visual and sound experience was great. I mean, I was enjoying this on my high-resolution monitor with the whole room being filled with darkness gave me an outstanding experience. The moment in the space was eye-catching, also the movie gives us a possibility of how the near future of space could be. The Moon could be a tourist destination for us, also such projects like Lima to explore space more and more is no rare possibility.

So yeah, it wass a good one, few might be expecting too much and get slapped but overall it would serve with a pleasnt experience. If you are planning to watch then go for it, Happy Watching!

  4. Ad Astra – Movie Review@readingdanvers2155d

    Ad Astra.jpg

Ad Astra was directed by James Gray ( The Lost City of Z) and stars Brad Pitt. Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland are in this movie as well in very small roles, and Liv Tyler also appears for about a total of two minutes. This is the Brad Pitt show. And it is a good show. He carries the entire movie on his shoulder effortlessly. I don't think I ever saw him give a bad performance and this performance is just perfect. Even the voiceover is great, when in other movies it usually it feels awkward. But Pitt can never be awkward. His performance is both powerful and subtle. He is a true star.

This movie takes place in the future. It says near future, but it feels more like the far future. Brad Pitt plays an astronaut called Roy McBride. He is the best in his line of work, he loves his work, he doesn't have a lot of personal connections which can affect his work and he always stays calm. But that calm is disturbed when he is informed that his father, who went missing in space when he was just 16 may still be alive. There are strange disturbances happening all around the world and throughout = the solar system. These disturbances can be lethal and end all life eventually. It is believed that the project that McBride's father worked on when he went missing is the cause of these disturbances. Any attempt to establish communication with Clifford McBride has failed. Now Roy must travel the solar system to find out what happened to his father and to save the world.

This movie is a lot more interesting than I thought it will be. I can't that it is action packed, but it has some action in it. Most importantly, it is very suspenseful. There is not a boring moment in this movie. The plot always moves forward. I read reviews that called this movie a slow burner, but I didn't feel it. It always felt like either something is happening or something is being discussed. Not a boring minute in my mind.

The ideas that this movie brings up are deep. This isn't a mission movie, it is more about what to do with your life movie. What gives something meaning? I didn’t expect the ending of the movie, but it wasn't played for shock value. Just as bringing the message of the movie home. I thought it was very original and I loved it.

This movie was not on the radar of a lot of people for some reason. But if you're looking for ideas about great movie to watch, this is one of those movies. It have both style and content. It's not perfect, but it is close to it.

  5. Ad Astra review - Why do space movies have to be so boring?@unbiasedwriter2167d

A family member came over a few evenings ago, and I suggested four movies that we could watch. Unfortunately, the decision fell on Ad Astra (a movie neither of us had seen before), hoping that Brad Pitt in space would give the evening a nice boost.

    Ad Astra Review.jpg

To be honest, I didn't know much about the movie before we started, and I didn't watch the trailer, nor did I read reviews or see stats. If I had, I guess the Rotten Tomatoes scores would have revealed a lot. The critics' score is 84%, while the audience score is 40%. Guess which category I consider myself to be?

Before I discuss the movie itself, let me tell you that I have trouble with space movies. I don't know why, but I guess since all scenes are supposed to be so fantastic and space-like, they use a lot of resources and money trying to create something like that. So, since all scenes should be so fantastic (and they are so expensive), they also have to be in slow-motion-mode. I guess some people sit in awe of this, but I fall asleep (just like I did watching Gravity in cinema). Interstellar was a bit better than Gravity, but I had trouble with that movie as well.

So, if I have to watch space movies, I guess my vote has to be for Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, or maybe Space Balls!

    space movie.jpg

    What is Ad Astra about?

Brad Pitt plays the role of an astronaut. His father never returned after a mission about 20 years ago. They last heard signals from him on March, before he continued his travel to Saturn. Now, many years later, they have received some signals that might reveal the fact that he is alive. So, his son is sent to the moon, then to March, and then to Saturn to discover what's up and find the reality about what happened to his dad.

It might sound interesting and cool, but it turns into something completely boring. Brad Pitt has a nice face, and that is almost the only face we see throughout the movie. Had it been a worse-looking face, it would have been a tragedy. So, Brad Pitt is saving the movie, as much as the film is possible to save at all.

They have for sure spent lots of money on the effects and creating moon-like, March like, and other space like circumstances, but it isn't enough to make this movie worth watching. It is simply too boring. It is like watching a documentary, just made with Hollywood effects. Of course, there are a few action scenes and some surprising elements, but it still doesn't make it worth spending two hours watching this movie.

What should be my conclusion to the movie? Don't watch it, unless you really love this kind of movies. If you loved Gravity, you might like this one. If you liked Interstellar, you might like this one. But, if you hated both, go far away from this movie.

Do something else, or watch Space Balls, Guardians of the Galaxy, or a Star Wars movie instead. That would be my suggestion, at least. If you still want to see it, the movie is still not to be found on Netflix, so you will most likely have to pay to rent it or buy it somewhere else.

    Ad Astra score 3/10

Have you seen the movie? I would love to hear your thoughts and comments. Do you agree with me, or did you enjoy every bit and sequence of the film? Write a comment and let me know about it!

    Ad astra, James Gray, 2019

Spasmodically seeking life elsewhere and losing life next to it. Go through the interstellar space to find out that we are all we have.

    architecture-building-cinema-436413 (1).jpg

In astra is the journey into space (of the self) of a son who suffers for the sins of his father and who must forgive and forgive himself.

To make peace and give yourself peace, to stop worrying about the future and start loving and living here and now. Because it makes us smile that we are billions on earth and we feel alone, so much so that we look for someone else, losing who we always face.

Ad astra is a science fiction film to reflect on an extremely close and concrete reality.

Lorne Balfe's Zimmerian music returns beautiful. Brad Pitt always deserves it.

  8. Ad Astra - movie review@godflesh2458d

"Ad Astra" is more of a mix of borrowings and references to other motion pictures and creators, rather than an original authorial product of its own style. I have no idea if this director's approach is a good thing or not, and I wouldn't even think about it because it's a matter of personal interpretation. I can only say that I personally did not get irritated (especially very much), but I would understand the viewers who would label as plagiarism what in this case I tolerate as a curtsy. But again, this is a matter of personal feeling, approach to the themes of the film, that even in a momentary mood, if you will. However, let me first say a few words about the story that Gray wants to tell:

    AdAstra_poster.jpg image source

In the not too distant future, when commercial flights to the moon have become a daily routine and Mars has already hosted the long-winged human colony, Roy McBride is given a secret mission to fly to the planet Neptune, from where he must establish and eventually eliminates the causes of mysterious energy anomalies that threaten the lives of all human beings. The caveat here is that Roy, who is the son of the most successful and popular astronaut in history, Clifford McBride, who disappeared thirty years ago on his extraterrestrial life expedition, is informed by his superiors that his father it may be alive and possibly related to a series of deadly disasters for humanity.

  9. REVIEW : "Ad Astra" (2019) - Movie by James Gray@mandibil2464d

Big science fiction movies should be seen in theatres. It is one of those genres that movies are just made for and the computer technology of the last couple of decades has really opened for opportunities that were previously close to impossible to reach.

Not too long ago we had the headspinning "Gravity" and time diluded "Interstellar", both examples of modern day big sci-fi offerings. Maybe Gravity was´nt as much Sci as it was Fi but still an example of space suspense that might as well have been full blown Scifi.

And there are good reasons to refer to these two movies, as I quite quickly got a feeling that we were dealing with something like a fusion of these two styles of movies. Not literally, but clearly had the same kind of feelings with Ad Astra as I had with both of those. Not least in the final notion of ... pretty good, but not quite a masterpiece.

At its core it is a roadmovie, the tried and tested format that never grows old. More specifically we are dealing with a "Apocalypse Now" finding your roots/yourself/the truth kind of roadmovie, just stretched out to basically across the solar system.

Brad Pitt plays an astronaut who is convinced into go looking for his legendary father, played by Tommy lee Jones, who he believed was dead long ago. But due to recent waves of electricity hitting the earth from the area around neptune, where he and his crew disappeared, he is now considered alive and worth heading out looking for.

    2019-09-30_003234.jpg

In accordance with his orders he heads out across the solar system, planet hopping the Moon, Mars passing Jupiter and Saturn, finally arriving at Neptune. Under way he encounters a few unexpected hurdles that adds a bit of detour time to the overall runtime.

This is one of the problems I have with the movie albeit a minor one. The sidetrackings are pretty engaging and fun, but they are mere intermissions in the story of the main character. A lot of voiceover is used to engage us in this rather introvert personality and the movie really struggles with finding a balance here to make sure we dont loose sight of his development while not get bored by hours of monotone voiceover.

    2019-09-30_003327.jpg

Another recurring problem is the lead. It is never a good choice to use one of the "hunks" as lead in a movie that tries to uphold a decent story of the main character. They are always disappointing if not downright bad. I can admit that within this boundary, Pitt tends to be on the better side, but holding back and stay introverted is not a peak competence of his, to say the least. And Cruise or Clooney would not be able to do it either. Try a movie like "Moon" with a great performance by Sam Rockwell, to see the difference I am talking about. Pitt is just boring and artificial to look at when he is not in action. And even the action sequences are sort of toned down to fit that feeling i guess. overall the director does not particularly use action for action´s sake, with maybe a few exceptions.

To be honest I was not impressed with any of the acting. They were all, kind of in a depressed state. That is not in itself bad acting. But maybe they seemed more like they did not want to be in the movie rather than depressed. I am not sure, they gave a notion of dread that was overall too strong for the overall exxperience of it.

But except for these "annoying" aspects, there are also a few very welcome a things I was particularly fond of. Thankfully, we do not get those generic metal-tube-sliding-doors-spacestations we see in every scifi movie the last hundred years. The colonies actually feel like they are organic and inhabited without looking ridiculous. This reallly helps make you feel you are present there. Like, there are "road" signs on the moon to follow. Just little touches like that are very satisfying to me.

    2019-09-30_003330.jpg

The cinematography is generally very good and believable, or maybe I should say smooth. There are a few parts where the director takes some liberties on what could possibly occur in reality, like using half a radar as a personal shield against rocks passing through the rings of Neptune. But I never were one to complain about artistic freedom. As long as it sort of serves a purpose and it does here.

The meaning is actually pretty straight forward and unless you have an iq lower than your shoesize, you will figure this out early on. And that may also be a small downside as it is pretty thin as you have to "wait" two hours before you reach that point and the final showdown needs to have some emotional punch to raise the bar.

The plot is very good and interesting. It fits the genre perfectly. The problem is that two hours is actually way too short to satisfy it. It would have made the perfect, big budget 6 episode scifi tv series. Infact that was my emmidiate thought after the scrolls. What a great plot for a six hour tv series, with one episode covering each if the six involved planets.

Lastly I want to mention something I have noticed in later years. "Older" men are often portrayed as hobo-like or having a sort of nihilistic "turning my back on society" attitude. It is rather implicit in the acting and slightly more noticable here i think. Donald Sutherland has a small part here and he looks like he has not washed his hair for five days and looks old and used. This is also th ecase for Tommy Lee Jones. Unkemmed, greasy hair and unkept beard. Used old shirt. (Luke Skywalker anyone).

Why is this necessary? And Pitt´s character is sort of seen af a product of this older pathetic (toxic masculine) generation. Because the female partner of the lead character is a beautiful and attractive "young(er)" woman who wants a "sensitive" man and not one of those reserved or nihilistic men. And it is incredibly sexistic in my opinion. It is ALWAYS men´s fault and women are just "victims" who no other choice than to leave their "unavailable" husband. Blaming men and excusing women. Can we not alter that stupid agenda anytime soon?

    2019-09-30_003339.jpg

Still the director manages to keep me fixed in the chair throughout the runtime and feel pretty well entertained and at times really surprised at the downplayed storytelling. Again it is not your average scifi action blockbuster but more like a well told story that maybe lacks a bit in the emotional department.

The inspirations are not directly clear, but I believe the opening shots with overlapping lenseflare like globelike objects is an homage to 2001. How could it not be. And when Pitt hits his rocket-ride to back home, flying alone in space and hitting it at great speed, needing to grab on to something it is obviously very much like Gravity.

It does try to combine artistry with action and does a pretty good job of it. The artistic side will always be compared to 2001, the mother of all modern artistic scifi. And I have a feeling of a decent amount of inspiration from 2001, but it is rather in the use of colors and camera angles, than in explicit references. And thank you for that.

I still feel the good parts weighs higher than the negative ones, but over time this could prove not worthy of the "classic" scifi label.

    7/10

  10. Noob Film Review - Ad Astra@nazirullsafry2468d

    adastra3.jpg

Wikipedia : Ad astra (phrase), a Latin phrase meaning *"To the stars”.*

Synopsis Major Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) has been called for a special mission by SPACECOM, a capitalist space agency to investigate a cosmic electrical anomaly that might have been coming from the Lima Project in Neptune, which also where his father, H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) was involved. But all contact was lost for 16 years. Roy take this as an opportunity to reconnect with his father.

The absence of humanity Despite breathing in space, it does not equate to being alive. The soundless void. The absence of the smell of air. The aroma of home made cooking. The simple face to face chat with family and friends.

    adastra1.jpg

A void as vast as an empty human heart

Despite millions of miles being linked through radio transmission, it is simply not the same. In outer space, all the things that made us human is absent.

So is the heartbeat of Roy who never went high in any mission crisis but went up the moment he lost his father. The feeling of lost of someone he loves and adore. Someone that he missed for more than 16 years. His father Clifford has become as void to any feeling or humanity. As void as the outer space. The space has consumed him.

Akin to what Captain Willard goes through in the Apocalypse Now where he went through the Nung River to seek for Colonel Walter E. Kurtz which has been consumed by the war.

    adastra5.jpg

    The horror...

**The quest for intelligent life** **Roy** then realised that he is going the wrong way in search for intelligent life. His pursuit for his career as an astronaut have neglected the love coming from his wife, **Eve** (Liv Tyler). The intelligent life was with him all the time.

Exploration and colonization of outer space by mankind is akin to spreading cancer out to the cosmos. We as a species has damaged the heaven called Earth. On the moon, greed still rules. Roy’s convoy being attacked by pirates. The attack of the baboon is a metaphor that human is still an ape no matter how far they explore.

The further we go out into the vastness of the void, the more we realized that there is going to be no other place like our home planet Earth, and it is truly a heaven.

It is ironic we seek intelligent life elsewhere when we neglect the ones that is right before us. Isn't it ironic that we seek to bring life to a dead planet when we are taking the life out of the planet we are living in? Can we be considered as an intelligent life by doing so?

    adastra2.jpg

Earth is the heaven that we are looking for

Despite the allegations by doubters saying that **Greta Thunberg** is a pawn in a political game to gain control of the people in this issue, the core message she is relaying is of the most importance and urgency. We are literally poisoning the air that we breath. How can we say we worship the God that give us this heaven if we do this knowing that he is observing us?

    adastra4.jpg

Even Agent Smith having problem classifying our species.

I enjoyed Interstellar more than this one though

  11. AD ASTRA (film) : Fantastic effects in a movie that really drags (NO SPOILERS)@gooddream2473d

One of the luxuries of living where I do in the world is the fact that it is possible for me to see every movie that gets released in a wonderful theater for as little as $2.50. Today was the first day Ad Astra was in the theaters and I got primo seats in a damn-near empty IMAX theater for $6. I don't know what films cost in the West these day, but it is certainly more than this.

I'm going to be very vague in what I say here because there is nothing worse than having a movie spoiled - you remember about how that guy was hospitalized for spoiling Endgame in China, right?

    adastraposter2.jpg source

Anyway, the movie was visually spectacular (as you would expect from a film with a $100 million budget) but I nearly walked out of the theater because i was nodding off (and I slept in until nearly 11 today.) The film starts out very strong and you are on the edge of your seat but then the "talk talk talk talk talk" begins and lasts for the next 40 minutes or so.

There are no bad actors in this movie, well I suppose that depends on whether or not you think Brad Pitt, Donald Sutherland, Liv Tyler, and Tommy-Lee Jones are accomplished actors... I know that I do. It's also worth noting that Jamie Kennedy is in this movie (albeit briefly) and I thought it was nice to give this guy a shot at something besides silly comedy for once.

    adastra-bradpitt-spacestation-outside-700x303.jpg source

I am a huge fan of science-fiction and I think I may actually appreciate somewhat realistic science fiction even more. This is kind of what Ad Astra is trying to be, although since it is set in the "near future" there are some deviations from what we now know to be possible such as how long it would take to travel from Earth to the outer gas giants. In the film this is resembled as less than 100 days when in reality it would take over a decade (with current combustible fuels as a method of propulsion.) This is not addressed in the film and based on how much damn talking there is already, I guess I'm kind of happy about that.

    G3EAJX7ziwcL6eATKDsqjg.jpg source

The scenes that take place on the moon (not a spoiler, it's in the trailer) are particularly visually appealing and I can't even imagine what the location scout had to go through to make this happen. I mean obviously a lot of this is CGI but not all of it is. There is also a fun message about how humans destroy any environment they get to as the arrival station on the moon is filled with cheesy photo ops and fast-food restaurants galore.

    from [Fox's official channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2-BeLxzUBSs0uSrmzWhJuQ)

Now, i don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but for the most part I found this movie to be really boring. At one point my friend left the theater to go to the bathroom and asked me what had happened for the 10 minutes he was gone and my answer was "not much" ... and that is not even an exaggeration. If you have really been looking forward to this film I would say go ahead and go see it. However, if you were kinda "meh" about whether or not you were going to shell out $20 (or whatever it costs to see a film in USA or wherever you are) I would say, wait for this one to hit Netflix.

My basic gauge of judging a film is "if i feel sleepy in an IMAX theater" something about the film is terribly wrong.

I felt sleepy during this one.
