It had always felt like I was the last person in the world to see Turning Red. I had seen a lot of reviews but non of them were enough to spark up my interest. But after watching Buzz Lightyear I decided to try out another animation by Pixar and it led me back to this one. I must say I get a little uneasy when it takes me a long time to watch an animation everyone has seen, felt the same when I watched hotel transylvania, but then it's not the end of the world hehe.
When I started watching Turning Red I actually wondered what new adventure they were going to offer me, I certainly didn't want to waste my data, with my high expectations (which were very high) to go see a bad movie. I must say though that I didn't regret wasting my 100minutes on an animation movie co-written/ directed by Domee Shi and distributed by Walt Disney.
It was very relatable and it was also sad but you can add funny and fun, the usual for an animated comedy film. Most times we're cut between trying to be the best children for our parents and being our own true selves. Everyday we wear a big smile and go about the activities that we believe would make our parents proud. It's not that we don't enjoy being who they want us to be but sometimes we just want to be free to do the things we want to do, to live and not be scared that living would come at a cost.
Took me a while to actually reveal my dancing side to my parents. They'd been a lot of hidden reheàrsals and lies about going for book studies when I was actually going to go make a dance video. Our parents have laid out the right path for us to follow surely but sometimes it feels we're just following their footsteps and no matter how we try we can never fit in their shoes. This movie pointed that out in a very fun, sad and relatable way.
It's scary to show your parents that you're not really who they think you are and it takes a lot of courage to come out and if you have really overprotective parents then goodluck with that. Amidst all that we know our parents do all they do because they actually love us too much to actually watch us go through what they went, they don't want us to make the mistakes they made so they try to do everything possible to avoid it without even knowing they're overdoing it.
Plot
It starts with Mie Lee, a 13year old girl who has everything going great for her. She's 13 and is already on her way to becoming a great adult. Her grades are perfect, social skills not so bad, organization skills are up the roof and she's just the child every parent would want, she sure has everything all figured out and even goes the extra mile to help her mom in the Temple. But amidst all this there's a part of her that she doesn't want her mother Ming to know about.
She somehow finds herself being best friends with Miriam, Priya and Abbey who sure are a different vibe, they're fun, unbothered and even have a crush on the local convenience store clerk who they spy on whenever they get the chance. But to crown it all up, them and Mei are fans of a Boy Band 4 Town and are overly crazy over them even if her mom takes a dislike to the band.
Everything goes perfectly well for Mei untill one night she realizes that she also has a crush on the store clerk and she finds herself making drawings of him, and her mom comes in right on time to see the drawings. Her overprotective mom's reaction wasn't one she had ever expected, that night she goes to bed sad and has a nightmare about Red Pandas.
She wakes up to find out that her pretty little self had been transformed into a Red Panda and she goes crazy, how did that happen? After managing to turn back to her real self she eventually realizes that she turns into the furry red animal whenever she's excited and angry. Her mom eventually opens up to her after she goes on a rampage at school, apparently their ancestor Sun Yee was granted the power to transform to a red Panda to protect her two daughters and it is passed down to every daughter in her lineage.
The only way to undo the transformation is to seal the Red Panda spirit in a talisman on the night of the Red moon by a ritual. Mei is excited that she can become normal again but become disoriented when her friends find out about it. But they take a liking to it and end up planning to attend 4*Towns upcoming concert. Will Mei be able to convinced her overprotective mom to allow her go to concert? Would she be able to get rid of the spirit of the Red Panda? I guess you'll have to watch it to find out.
My take on the movie
At first I thought it was going to be a boring movie because of the way it started. But I must say it was genius because it was the perfect build up to the ending that I certainly didn't see coming. The characters too were well developed and soon took a certain liking to all of them especially her friends. The voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, James Hong were perfect and it just seemed like they were one with the characters.
One thing I'll always commend Pixar is their great animation. They put in a lot of work to make it come out beautiful and it always does, the colors were on point, details, and story really left me wanting more. I must say they really did really well with this one. It is not something entirely new but the story wasn't really predictable and they took me by surprise in the scene where her mother goes on a rampage and crashes the concert, that has to be my favorite scene ahahaha, because it got me laughing hard.
When I hear people say they don't watch animations, I wonder why because it's a great way to relax and get your mind off a lot of your worries and if it has a great story they'll be a lot of things to learn. I really truely enjoyed this one and I'm surely not biased because it's animation, I'll strongly recommend you to go see it if you haven't. I'm giving a rating of 8 out of ten.

Siempre tuve la sensación de ser la última persona del mundo en ver Turning Red. Había visto muchas críticas, pero ninguna era suficiente para despertar mi interés. Pero después de ver Buzz Lightyear decidí probar otra animación de Pixar y me llevó de nuevo a ésta. Debo decir que me pongo un poco inquieto cuando tardo en ver una animación que todo el mundo ha visto, sentí lo mismo cuando vi hotel transylvania, pero luego no es el fin del mundo jeje.
Cuando empecé a ver Turning Red realmente me pregunté qué nueva aventura me iban a ofrecer, desde luego no quería desperdiciar mis datos, con mis altas expectativas (que eran muy altas) para ir a ver una mala película. Sin embargo, debo decir que no me arrepentí de haber desperdiciado mis 100 minutos en una película de animación coescrita/dirigida por Domee Shi y distribuida por Walt Disney.
Era muy relatable y también era triste, pero se puede añadir divertido y gracioso, lo habitual para una película de comedia animada. La mayoría de las veces estamos divididos entre intentar ser los mejores hijos para nuestros padres y ser nosotros mismos. Todos los días llevamos una gran sonrisa y realizamos las actividades que creemos que harían que nuestros padres se sintieran orgullosos. No es que no disfrutemos siendo quienes ellos quieren que seamos, pero a veces sólo queremos ser libres para hacer las cosas que queremos hacer, para vivir y no tener miedo de que vivir tenga un coste.
Tardé un tiempo en revelar mi lado bailarín a mis padres. Me habían ocultado muchas cosas y mentiras sobre que iba a estudiar libros cuando en realidad iba a hacer un vídeo de danza. Nuestros padres nos han marcado el camino correcto, pero a veces parece que sólo seguimos sus pasos y que, por mucho que lo intentemos, nunca podremos encajar en sus zapatos. Esta película lo señala de una manera muy divertida, triste y cercana.
Da miedo mostrar a tus padres que no eres realmente quien ellos creen que eres y hace falta mucho valor para salir del armario, y si tienes unos padres muy sobreprotectores, pues buena suerte con eso. En medio de todo eso sabemos que nuestros padres hacen todo lo que hacen porque en realidad nos quieren demasiado como para vernos pasar por lo que ellos pasaron, no quieren que cometamos los errores que ellos cometieron así que tratan de hacer todo lo posible para evitarlo sin siquiera saber que están exagerando.
Trama
Comienza con Mie Lee, una chica de 13 años a la que todo le va de maravilla. Tiene 13 años y ya está en camino de convertirse en una gran adulta. Sus notas son perfectas, sus habilidades sociales no son tan malas, su capacidad de organización está por las nubes y es la niña que todo padre querría, seguro que lo tiene todo planeado e incluso hace un esfuerzo extra para ayudar a su madre en el Templo. Pero en medio de todo esto hay una parte de ella que no quiere que su madre Ming conozca.
De alguna manera, se encuentra con que es la mejor amiga de Miriam, Priya y Abbey, que son muy diferentes, son divertidas, no se molestan e incluso están enamoradas del dependiente de la tienda local, al que espían cada vez que tienen la oportunidad. Pero para rematar, ellas y Mei son fanáticas de una Boy Band 4 Town y se vuelven locas por ellas aunque a su madre no le guste la banda.
Todo va perfectamente para Mei hasta que una noche se da cuenta de que también está enamorada del dependiente de la tienda y se encuentra haciendo dibujos de él, y su madre llega justo a tiempo para ver los dibujos. La reacción de su sobreprotectora madre no fue la que ella esperaba, esa noche se va a la cama triste y tiene una pesadilla sobre los pandas rojos.
Se despierta y descubre que su pequeño y bonito yo se ha transformado en un panda rojo y se vuelve loca, ¿cómo ha ocurrido? Después de conseguir volver a su verdadero ser, se da cuenta de que se convierte en el peludo animal rojo siempre que está excitada y enfadada. Al parecer, a su antepasada Sun Yee se le concedió el poder de transformarse en un panda rojo para proteger a sus dos hijas y se lo transmitió a todas las hijas de su linaje.
La única forma de deshacer la transformación es sellar el espíritu del panda rojo en un talismán en la noche de la luna roja mediante un ritual. Mei está emocionada por poder volver a ser normal, pero se desorienta cuando sus amigos se enteran. Sin embargo, se aficionan a ella y acaban planeando asistir al próximo concierto de 4*Towns. ¿Podrá Mei convencer a su sobreprotectora madre para que le permita ir al concierto? ¿Será capaz de deshacerse del espíritu del Panda Rojo? Supongo que tendrás que verla para averiguarlo.
Mi opinión sobre la película
Al principio pensé que iba a ser una película aburrida por la forma en la que empezaba. Pero tengo que decir que fue una genialidad porque fue la construcción perfecta para el final que ciertamente no vi venir. Los personajes también estaban bien desarrollados y pronto les cogí cariño a todos, especialmente a sus amigos. Las voces de Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen y James Hong eran perfectas y parecía que eran uno con los personajes.
Una cosa que siempre elogiaré de Pixar es su gran animación. Se esforzaron mucho para que saliera hermosa y siempre lo hace, los colores estaban en su punto, los detalles y la historia realmente me dejaron con ganas de más. Debo decir que realmente lo hicieron muy bien con esta. No es algo totalmente nuevo pero la historia no era realmente predecible y me tomaron por sorpresa en la escena en la que su madre se desboca y se cuela en el concierto, esa tiene que ser mi escena favorita ahahaha, porque me hizo reír mucho.
Cuando escucho a la gente decir que no ven animaciones, me pregunto por qué, porque es una gran manera de relajarse y sacar la mente de muchas de sus preocupaciones y si tiene una gran historia serán un montón de cosas para aprender. Realmente disfruté de esta y seguramente no soy parcial porque es de animación, te recomiendo encarecidamente que vayas a verla si no lo has hecho. Le doy una calificación de 8 sobre 10.
