The oath that doctors take when they graduate is practically a life motto of their profession, and in the anime called Monster, it is one of the things that is highlighted in the first chapters.

It should be noted that the story is based on a manga by Naoki Urasawa, a mangaka recognized for excellent works, but undoubtedly the most relevant and most successful has been Monster, a thrilling story, full of suspense, cruelty and values, the latter above all, reflected in the character of Dr. Kenzo Tenma, who ultimately is the protagonist.

While I don't intend to cover the entire series in this post, I only wish to touch on the Hippocratic Oath, as it is the main theme at the beginning of the series. What would you do if you were ordered to operate on one person over another just because they have a different social status?

The title of the post is not based on what I believe, but it was one of the phrases used by Dr. Kenzo's fiancée when the life of a music star was saved but the life of a worker was disregarded, the latter being the one who should have been operated, however, due to the pretensions of the director, the famous was ordered to be operated on before the worker, and consequently he died negligently.

That fact brought an immense guilt in Dr. Kenzo's conscience, and was the trigger for his decisions in later cases, because putting the life of one to the detriment of another is really not the right thing to do.

Honestly it caught my attention, and I must confess that this plot caught me quickly, since seeing the attitude of the Doctor, and how he suffered in his conscience to do the right thing brought him consequences, but once he did it he felt true freedom in his mind. And this is the point I liked the most, doing the right thing will always bring guarantees.

Dr. Kenzo felt peace of mind but temporarily suffered the consequences, the simple fact of not submitting to external ambitions made him lose "certain privileges" and despite being the best neurosurgeon he was excluded because of his principles.

Have you ever suffered because of not compromising your values? Or have you given in to pressure? These are good questions.

I think these kinds of stories are worth reading, and if they are animated as in this case, it's good to see the anime. I clarify that it is a work of more than 20 years ago, its animation is according to the 90's, in my opinion excellent, its plot spectacular, so my recommendation is that you can see it if you have not seen it.

¿Alguna vez has padecido a causa de no comprometer tus valores?

  • These things happen in real life unfortunately and are more common than you might think. Seeing that reality in an anime is quite interesting; it has come up several times for me to watch it and I haven't had the chance, I think I should. Those anime where they question things are the ones that catch my attention the most.

I actually want to be sure of something. I've heard a lot about this anime, gotten a lot of recs about it but it always goes in between being a thriller or a horror anime. Is it horror-ish?😞 I have no idea why I haven't seen it yet

Shocking the entry of this anime, I think that stories of this type that show the harsh reality are those that deserve to be successful over time.

That doctor had his values, that remorse made him listen to his conscience knowing that he would lose privileges. I found it very cruel that he had to make the decision between a worker and a music star and he was pressured to leave the worker in the background 💔

This anime was recommended to me by Netflix recently but I thought it's about monsters so I skipped it. It was a different kind of monster eh. Good thing I read your post and wow, this plot is interesting! I'll probably watch this soon. Too realistic plot!

It's not the first time I read a review of Monster in the community, that gives me to understand that it's a misunderstood gem, at least from my point of view.

Thanks for sharing in the community. See you soon!
