The film tells the story of Thomas Nickerson, interviewed by the writer Herman Melville, who is inspired to write a novel about the adventure of the whaling ship Essex in which Thomas works as a hub at a young age.
Although Thomas was reluctant to remember that journey, enticed by the writer's reward, he begins his narration.
In 1820 Captain Chase, disappointed by the failure to promote to first officer by part of the shipowning company he works for, he faces yet another voyage as captain under the command of the arrogant officer George Pollard, son of a well-known whaling commander.
During the first storm faced in the open sea, the ship suffered damage, caused precisely by the inexperience of the new officer. The whaling is also poor and the ship sails for many months without ever catching anything until, upon landing on an island of Ecuador, the captain is informed of a large bank of whales in an area of the ocean still unexplored.
Once in the designated area, the crew is preparing to hunt the whale bank but during the hunt, a giant whale attacks the whale, sinking it and causing the first victims. With only 3 lifeboats and a very scarce quantity of food and water, driven by the current in the middle of the vast ocean, the sailors are decimated by hunger and thirst. In order to survive, they begin to feed on the bodies of deceased men.
Relieved, after about 3 months from the shipwreck, the survivors are recovered from some ships in transit and finally manage to return home after a few weeks of travel.
At the end of Thomas' tiring narrative, the writer Herman Melville is amazed by what he has heard and promises to narrate the events to which he will add some science fiction.
The film is very pleasant in its vision. The narration manages to capture my attention for the entire duration of the film (about 2 hours) and the special effects are well done and manage to make the drama of the events more real. The cast is made up of very good actors in which Chris Hemsworth as Captain Owen Chase, Benjamin Walker as the young Thomas hub, Cillian Murphy in Matthew Joy and Benjamin Walker as the first whale officer Essex.
A film recommended for watching adults due to the presence of some bloody scenes. Definitely a film worth watching!

ITA Il film narra le vicende di Thomas Nickerson, intervistato dallo scrittore Herman Melville, il quale è ispirato a scrivere un romanzo sull'avventura della nave baleniera Essex in cui Thomas lavoro come mozzo in giovane età.
Nonostante Thomas fosse riluttante a rimembrare quel viaggio, invogliato dalla ricompensa dello scrittore, inizia la sua narrazione.
Nel 1820 il capitano Chase, deluso dalla mancata promozione a primo ufficiale da parte della compagnia di armatori per cui lavora, affronta l'ennesimo viaggio da capitano sotto il comando dell'arrogante ufficiale George Pollard, figlio di un noto comandante di baleniere.
Durante la prima tempesta affrontata in pieno mare aperto, la nave subisce danni, causati proprio dall'inesperienza del nuovo ufficiale. La caccia alle balene inoltre è misera e la nave naviga per molti mesi senza mai pescare nulla finchè, approdati su un'isola dell'Ecquador, il capitano è informato di un numeroso banco di balene in una zona dell'oceano ancora inesplorata.
Giunta nella zona designata, la ciurma si appresta a cacciare il banco di balene ma durante la caccia, una balena gigante attacca la baleniera, affondandola e causando le prime vittime. Provvisti solamente di 3 scialuppe e una quantità di cibo e acqua molto scarsi, spinti dalla corrente in mezzo al vasto oceano, i marinai sono decimati dalla fame e dalla sete. Pur di sopravvivere, iniziano a cibarsi dei corpi degli uomini defunti.
Esanimi, dopo circa 3 mesi dal naufragio, i superstiti sono recuperati da alcune navi in transito e riescono finalmente e rientrare a casa dopo alcune settimane di viaggio.
Al termine della faticosa narrazione di Thomas, lo scrittore Herman Melville rimane stupito da quanto udito e promette di narrare le vicende a cui aggiungerà un pò di fantascienza.
Il film è molto piacevole nella sua visione. La narrazione riesce a catturare la mia attenzione per tutta la durata del film (circa 2 ore) e gli effetti speciali sono ben fatti e riescono a rendere più reale la drammaticità degli eventi. Il cast è formato da attori molto bravi trea cui Chris Hemsworth nei panni del capitano Owen Chase, Benjamin Walker nelle vesti del giovane mozzo Thomas, Cillian Murphy in Matthew Joy e Benjamin Walker nei panni del primo ufficiale della baleniera Essex.
Un film consigliato alla visione degli adulti a causa della presenza di alcune scene cruenti. Sicuramente un film che merita la visione!
