My Review: Trading Places - Una Poltrona per Due [ENG-ITA]

Film produced exactly the year in which I was born, back in 1983, has become a Christmas classic, broadcast in Italy every year on Christmas Eve evening. Trading Places is a comedy starring Dan Aykroyd as Louis Winthorpe III and Eddie Murphy in the role of poor beggar Billie Ray Valentine.

Louis is a wealthy businessman, experienced stockbroker and employee of the Duke brothers company, operating in the sector, businessmen who love betting also outside of Wall Street and decide the firemen to reverse life of the two subjects after a fortuitous clash in person, betting the success of the plan for $ 1.

The Duke brothers manage to frame Winthorpe in some wrongdoings, such as to fire him from work and remove him from his friends and his girlfriend. Desperate and vagrant, Winthorpe finds help in Ophelia, a young prostitute in the pay of the Duke Brothers. Valentine instead gets caught up in worldly life and money, suddenly becoming a man of hunger and consideration. But during an evening of celebration, Valentine discovers the true Duke plan and thus decides to contact Winthorpe to organize a counter move.

Billy Ray and Louis discover that the Duke brothers, who learned of the possibility of speculating on Wall Street on the basis of information from Beeks, a corrupt government man, who will illegally deliver information on the economic performance of some agricultural products. Having managed to intercept Beeks and exchanged the documents with the fake ones, on the day of speculation the Duke brothers, confident of the information received, dare to invest their capital by buying shares that in reality will prove to be a flop and will reduce them to the pavement. Billy Ray and Louis, knowing the original documents, will become millionaires instead.

Trading Places is a comedy that highlights some important issues such as the abuse of power, speculation and above all the obsessive link between man and money and how cruel and cynical man can become for value one dollar. The story takes place near Christmas and the atmosphere makes everything more magical. Although 36 years have passed since the first screening of the film, perhaps it will be the ever recurring theme or perhaps the skill of the actors and production in general, but Trading Places is definitely one of my favorite films that I will see again on the 24th December every next year.

Una poltrona per due è una commedia che ha come protagonisti Dan Aykroyd nei panni di Louis Winthorpe III e Eddie Murphy nel ruolo di Billie Ray Valentine, in povero mendicante.

Louis è un ricco uomo d'affari, esperto agente di borsa e dipendente della società dei fratelli Duke, operante nel settore, uomini d'affari amanti delle scommesse anche al di fuori di Wall Street e decidono la vigili di Natale d'invertire la vita dei due soggetti dopo un fortuito scontro di persona, scommettendo la riuscita del piano per 1 $.

I fratelli Duke riescono ad incastrare Winthorpe in alcune malefatte, tale da licenziarlo da lavoro e allontanarlo dai suoi amici e dalla sua fidanzata. Disperato e vagabondo, Winthorpe trova aiuto in Ophelia, una giovane prostituta al soldo dei Fratelli Duke. Valentine invece si lascia catturare dal vita mondana e dal denaro, diventando improvvisamente un uomo di fame e considerazione. Ma durante una serata di festeggiamenti, Valentine scopre il vero piano dei Duke e decide così di contattare Winthorpe per organizzare una contromossa.

Billy Ray e Louis scoprono che i fratelli Duke, venuti a conoscenza della possibilità di speculare a Wall Street sulla base di informazioni di Beeks, uomo governativo corrotto, il quale consegnerà in modo illegale informazioni sull'andamento economico di alcuni prodotti agricoli. Riusciti ad intercettare Beeks e scambiati i documenti con quelli falsi, il giorno della speculazione i fratelli Duke, sicuri dell'informazione ricevuta, osano nell'investire il loro capitale comprando azioni che in realtà si riveleranno un flop e li ridurranno sul lastrico. Billy Ray e Louis, conoscendo i documenti originali, diventeranno invece milionari.

Una poltrona per due è una commedia che sottolinea alcune tematiche importanti come l'abuso di potere, la speculazione e soprattutto il legame ossessivo tra l'uomo ed il denaro e quanto l'uomo possa diventare crudele e cinico per il valore di un solo dollaro. La storia si svolge in prossimità del Natale e l'atmosfera rende tutto più magico. Nonostante siano trascorsi ormai 36 anni dalla prima proiezione del film, forse sarà la tematica sempre ricorrente o forse la bravura degli attori e della produzione in generale, ma Una poltrona per due resta sicuramente uno dei miei film preferiti che rivedrò il 24 dicembre di ogni prossimo anno.
