"Get on Up" movie - Freedom of Expression in America

Review by @clumsysilverdad · 3186d · of Get On Up

Continuing with the Chadwick Boseman, I checked out the James Brown movie "Get on Up" from 2014. I hadn't heard about this film but it's an excellent account of the life of the "Godfather of Soul". James Brown's influence on popular music is hard to fanthom because of his development of soul vocals, funk rhythms and residuals all the way down to hip-hop. The film is a chopped up chronological mix of Mr. Brown's life, achievements, and failures.

Growing up dirt poor and abandoned in 1930s segregated south Mr. Brown had no advantages in life save his innate sense of rhythm and gifts as a performer/entertainer. One appreciates the drive and street smarts to achieve legendary status and the grit to keep moving forward each day. Chadwick Boseman gives an outstanding performance in capturing many nuances of James Brown's eccentric yet soulful personality. When it comes to 'gettin' on up' for James Brown, it is no joke that the struggle is real.

It's also important as ever to understand and appreciate the challenges of civil rights and segregated American history. We cannot revere pioneers in equality and freedoms without understanding the struggle and sacrifice it takes. Too many times the establishment congratulates themselves by "honoring" the likes of M.L.K. and Rosa Parks while at the same time literally "white"washing their story and the rebellion they were cursed for in their time. An excellent article about this is https://theintercept.com/2017/10/08/the-sanitizing-of-martin-luther-king-and-rosa-parks.
