Greetings, folks from Hive and the #scrobblelife community. As some of you may know, I am a literature teacher, and today I began working on the Hispanic-American short story in class. And what better way to start than with one of the continent's most renowned writers? I am referring to the Mexican master Juan Rulfo (1917–1986) and one of his iconic tales: "La herencia de Matilde Arcángel" (The Legacy of Matilde Arcángel).
Originally published in 1953 as part of the seminal collection El Llano en llamas (The Plain in Flames), this text is a quintessential example of the Magical Realism and Regionalism of the mid-20th century. Rulfo’s writing immerses us in a rural, arid, and hostile atmosphere—a world defined by a lack of love, hatred, crossed destinies, vengeance, and desolation.
The story centers on two main characters—father and son—who share virtually identical names: the father, Euremio Cedillo, and his son, also named Euremio. They are physical opposites: while the father is an imposing, wealthy man, the son is a flabby, gangly, and apathetic youth.
The boy bears the tragic burden of guilt—imposed by his father—of having "caused" his mother's death. The tragedy occurred on the day of the boy's baptism, when his crying startled the horse Matilde Arcángel was riding; as she fell, she shielded the baby with her own body, suffering a fatal accident. Euremio Cedillo never forgave him for that event, condemning his son to grow up marginalized, loathed, and crushed under the weight of a harrowing resentment.
The father’s hatred for his own son was so boundless that he chose to squander his entire fortune on alcohol and gambling rather than leave him what had once been a vast estate. Euremio the elder was a wealthy man accustomed to commanding others; he used his money to marry Matilde Arcángel, a beautiful and highly sought-after young woman. Yet, while he essentially possessed her, he could never truly claim her heart. Fate tore her away from him on the very day the resentment that would destroy his family was born.
If you wish to discover how this harrowing tale unfolds and learn the true nature of the inheritance mentioned in the title, I invite you to read it. Be warned: the ending will leave you stunned.
Thank you for reading. Many blessings!

¡Muchas bendiciones!
