A first-year secondary school student provided this analysis of the following short story:
Mr. Cat (Anonymous)
There sat Mr. Cat, upon a golden chair, wearing silk stockings and little golden shoes, when news arrived that he was to be wed to a brown female cat, the daughter of a Roman cat.
Overjoyed, the cat climbed onto the roof to dance; but he was struck with a stick, and came tumbling down.
He broke seven ribs and the very tip of his tail.
They summoned the physicians, doctors, and surgeons; they slaughtered seven hens and fed him some broth.
They carried poor Mr. Cat away to be buried, borne upon the shoulders of four ginger cats.
Dancing atop his little coffin were seven mice, rejoicing to see that their worst enemy had died.
He wrote the poem in his notebook and identified the characters; * Mr. Cat (Don Gato)
- The brown female cat
- Physicians, doctors, and surgeons
- Seven hens
- 4 ginger cats
- 7 dancing mice
The student tells me, in a playful tone, that he found the story quite funny. He described how he imagined it unfolding:
A very refined cat, sitting on a golden chair—dressed to the nines and looking quite glamorous—is overjoyed upon learning he is to marry a beautiful female cat. He heads up to the rooftop, only to be struck with a stick by some mysterious figures—likely the mice!😁
Doctors try to save his life; they even slaughter seven innocent hens to make a broth for him—but he dies anyway.
His friends organize a funeral, and four cats dance along, quite happily, atop the little box containing Mr. Cat.
According to my student, the culprits were the mice. Although the story itself doesn't explicitly state this, he maintains the theory that the seven mice were the only ones who rejoiced at Mr. Cat’s death—which, in his view, is more than enough reason to point to them as the likely perpetrators. ...crime.
In my view, the analysis was excellent; first-year students are coming straight from primary school, so it is important to reinforce analytical skills and critical interpretation. These simple readings spark their creativity and—for many of them—motivate an interest in drawing and reading.
Thank you for joining me on this literary journey with my students.

Escribió la poesía en su cuaderno, extrajo los personajes;
- El Señor Don Gato
- La gatita parda
- Medicos, doctores y cirujanos
- Siete gallinas
- 4 gatos colorados
- 7 ratones bailando
