The story takes place at Hyakkaou Private Academy, an elite high-class school that houses the children of the wealthiest and most influential people in Japan. However, the student hierarchy at this school is not determined by academic performance or athleticism, but rather by stakes.
Students are ranked by their monetary contributions submitted to the student council. Students who win, gain popularity, prestige and connections. The others, those who lose, go into debt and become slaves, "domestic animals". Pets that fail to pay off their debts by graduation are given a "Life Schedule", which dictates their future as they pay their debts with life.
