As part of my personal countdown to the Oscar Awards gala, I decided to dedicate the following weeks to seeing as many of the nominated films as I can see, leaving some that I had pending for later. I'm going to post reviews as I see them and on a whim, leaving aside the ones I've already seen, I'll start with the ones with the most nominations.
En el marco de mi cuenta regresiva personal para la gala de los Premios Oscar, decidí dedicar las siguientes semanas a ver la mayor cantidad de las películas nominadas que pueda ver, dejando para después algunas que tenía pendientes. Voy a ir posteando reseñas a medida que las vaya viendo y por mero capricho, dejando de lado las que ya he visto, comenzaré por las que tegan más nominaciones.
Belfast is a story set in tumultuous Northern Ireland in the late 1960s. Buddy, the boy you've seen on the movie posters, grows up in an environment of labor struggle, cultural change, but especially interreligious hatred and sectarian violence: Catholics begin to be attacked by the Protestant majority. As in the persecutions committed against the Jews during the Second World War, or against the Hindus in Pakistan in the 20th century, there are extremist, radical groups that reject and attack their own neighbors, people they have always known, for concentrating on perhaps the only difference that separates them from each other: their religion. They are Irish like them, they speak like them, in everything else they are the same, but a different belief is enough to consider a social cleansing necessary.
Belfast es una historia ambientada en la tumultuosa Irlanda del Norte de finales de los años 60. Buddy, el niño que han visto en los posters de la película, crece en un ambiente de lucha obrera, cambios culturales, pero sobre todo de odio interreligioso y violencia sectaria: los católicos comienzan a ser atacados por la mayoría protestante. Tal como en las persecuciones cometidas contra los judíos durante la segunda guerra mundial, o contra los hindúes en el Pakistán del siglo XX, existen grupos extremistas, radicales, que rechazan y atacan a sus propios vecinos, personas que conocen de siempre, por concentrarse en tal vez la única diferencia que los separa a unos de otros: su religión. Son irlandeses como ellos, hablan como ellos, en todo lo demás son iguales, pero basta una creencia diferente para cosiderar necesaria una limpieza social.
Buddy dreams of a future without problems, in which his father does not have to work in England and can come more than two weekends a month, in which his grandparents also live and in which he can grow up and marry Catherine. But those dreams seem to linger and fade from the horizon as the situation grows more and more tense on the streets of Belfast.
Buddy sueña con un futuro sin problemas, en el que su padre no tenga que trabajar en Inglaterra y pueda venir más que dos fines de semana al mes, en el que vivan también sus abuelos y en el que él pueda crecer y casarse con Catherine. Pero esos sueños parecen demorarse y borrarse del horizonte a medida que la situación se vuelve más y más tensa en las calles de Belfast.
Despite being away most of the time, Buddy's dad maintains a good relationship with him and his brother Will; Together with his wife, they make up a loving, understanding, but also firm and exemplary parental duo. They are joined by the sweet grandmother of the boys and the wise and always dedicated grandfather. Together they make up a pleasant, fun, loving, united family unit, which must fight to stay safe while people kill each other in the streets and clings to staying faithful to their homeland while many others seek new horizons far from violence and far from home.
A pesar de estar ausente la mayor parte del tiempo, el papá de Buddy mantiene una buena relación con él y con su hermano Will; junto a su esposa conforman una dupla parental amorosa, comprensiva, pero también firme y ejemplar. A ellos se suman la dulce abuela de los chicos y el sabio y siempre dedicado abuelo. Entre todos configuran una unidad familiar amena, divertida, amorosa, compenetrada, que debe luchar por mantenerse a salvo mientras la gente se mata en las calles y que se aferra a mantenerse fiel a su tierra natal mientras muchos otros buscan nuevos horizontes lejos de la violencia y lejos de casa.
The situations that are presented raise various themes present in the film: religious intolerance, misunderstanding, violence, innocence, childhood, marriage, old age, exile, death, love... and all these reflections are revealed of an excellent script that incorporates a nostalgic treatment of the past: we can see brands of products, toys, customs, artifacts, typical of the place and time in which the story is set, which is accentuated when the music plays or when Buddy watches movies on the TV or at the movies. High Noon, Chitty chitty bang bang, are some of the references that appear in the film. In that sense, the phrase that appears on the film's poster is very appropriate: our memories make us.
Las situaciones que se presentan plantean diversos temas presentes en la película: intolerancia religiosa, incomprensión, violencia, la inocencia, la infancia, el matrimonio, la vejez, el exilio, la muerte, el amor... y todas estas reflexiones se van desprendiendo de un excelente guión que incorpora un tratamiento nostálgico del pasado: podemos ver marcas de productos, juguetes, costumbres, artefactos, propios del lugar y la época en que está ambientada la historia, lo cual se acentúa cuando suena la música o cuando Buddy ve películas en su televisor o en el cine. High Noon, Chitty chitty bang bang, son algunos de los referentes que aparecen en la cinta. En ese sentido la frase que aparece en el poster de la película es muy apropiada: our memories make us (nuestros recuerdos nos hacen).
The performances are very good, especially Caitriona Balfe as the mother (she shines on screen, totally charming and engaging); the music is great, the montage too, the script is impressive, but the best of all are the direction and photography. Filmed in black and white (except for the intro and some single images), the approaches, the shots, the camera sequences are wonderful. At times it reminded me of Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War but with a happier touch and precisely in that last element is the key to the film: the emotional factor. The film leads us to experience sadness, joy, tension (the scene in which Buddy is playing in the street and stops to see how the mob approaches with torches totally breaks the warm and happy atmosphere of the beginning), anguish, despair, love, tenderness, helplessness, fun, laughter, compassion... the list is long and varied. From the emotional point of view, the director completely conquers us.
Las actuaciones son muy buenas, en especial la de Caitriona Balfe como la madre (brilla en la pantalla, totalmente encantadora y atrapante); la música es buenísima, el montaje también, el guión es impresionante, pero lo mejor de todo son la Dirección y la fotografía. Filmada en blanco y negro (a excepción del intro y algunas imágenes sueltas), los enfoques, los planos, las secuencias de cámara son una maravilla. Por momentos me recordó la Cold War de Pawel Pawlikowski pero con un toque más alegre y precisamente en ese último elemento está la clave de la película: el factor emocional. La película nos lleva a experimentar tristeza, alegría, tensión (la escena en la que Buddy va jugando por la calle y se detiene a ver cómo se acerca la turba con antorchas rompe totalmente el clima cálido y feliz del inicio), angustia, desesperación, amor, ternura, impotencia, diversión, risas, compasión... la lista es larga y variada. Desde lo emotivo, el director nos conquista totalmente.
There are those who have seen in this film a suspicious similarity with Roma, especially because of the black and white photography and the yellow letters of the title. But it is like saying that it resembles La vita è bella because it mixes tragedy and comedy, or Jojo Rabbit because it shows a violent and adult world through the eyes of a child, or the aforementioned Cold War. Yes, it is similar to all those and many other films, because it appeals to nostalgia, to memory, to a lost childhood, to a history of violence, to the incoherence of believers in God, to themes that have been treated previously. It looks like many movies but also, despite having the same ingredients, the mixture is unique and that's where the originality lies: to show something familiar in a new way.
Hay quienes han visto en esta película una sospechosa similitud con Roma, sobre todo por la fotografía en blanco y negro y las letras amarillas del título. Pero es como decir que se parece a La vita è bella por mezclar tragedia y comedia, o a Jojo Rabbit porque se muestra un mundo violento y adulto a través de la mirada de un niño, o a la ya referida Cold War. Sí, se parece a todas esas y a muchas otras películas, porque apela a la nostalgia, al recuerdo, a una infancia perdida, a una historia de violencia, a la incoherencia de los creyentes en dios, a temas que han sido tratados previamente... se parece a muchas películas pero también, a pesar de contar con los mismos ingredientes, la mezcla es única y en eso está la originalidad; en mostrar algo conocido de una nueva forma.
Kenneth Branagh's name sounded familiar to me, but I couldn't remember where. It wasn't until I saw the photograph that I recognized the Hercule Poirot from the new Agatha Christie adaptations and the Andrei Sator from Tenet. I did not know that he had also directed feature films, much less in that position he had been nominated for an Oscar for his version of Hamlet in 1996. Now, with Belfast, written and directed by him, he has seven nominations: Best film, Best Direction, Best Supporting Actor (Ciarán Hinds), Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench), Best Song, Best Sound and Best Original Screenplay, a category in which he already triumphed at the Golden Globes, how many golden statuettes will he take home?
El nombre de Kenneth Branagh me sonaba familiar, pero no recordaba de dónde. No fue sino hasta ver la fotografía cuando reconocí al Hercules Poirot de las nuevas adaptaciones de Agatha Christie y al Andrei Sator de Tenet. No sabía que también había dirigido largometrajes y mucho menos en ese puesto había estado nominado a los Oscars por su versión de Hamlet en 1996. Ahora, con Belfast, escrita y dirigida por él, cuenta con siete nominaciones: Mejor película, Mejor dirección, Mejor actor de reparto (Ciarán Hinds), Mejor actriz de reparto (Judi Dench), Mejor canción, Mejor sonido y Mejor guion original, categoría en la que ya triunfó en los Globos de Oro, ¿cuántas estatuillas doradas logrará llevarse a casa?
