La adversidad nos puede sorprender en cualquier momento, sin que lo podamos prever o anticipar. Se puede estar muy tranquilo, con la sensación de que todo está controlado, y de pronto algo viene a desequilibrarnos la vida, creándonos un sin número de dificultades.
Sin embargo, cada uno tiene una forma diferente de responder ante esas situaciones de dificultad. Algunos se sentirán devastados, paralizados y sin ánimos para levantarse de nuevo. Otros, lograran superar cualquier evento adverso. Que respondamos de un modo o de otro tiene que mucho que ver con la forma en que aprendimos a ver el mundo desde la niñez…
El celebrado director, guionista y actor, Kenneth Branagh, nos trae en Belfast (2021) una película profundamente personal, basada en las vivencias de su infancia en Irlanda del Norte, a finales de los años 60, un tiempo de gran convulsión política en esa parte del mundo.
La acción transcurre en el año 1969. Buddy (Jude Hill), nuestro protagonista, es un niño de nueve años. Un muchacho inocente, que vive en una comunidad muy unida en la ciudad de Belfast, Irlanda del Norte. Tiene la fortuna de contar con una linda familia compuesta por su madre (Caitríona Balfe), su padre, amoroso y distante, (Jamie Dornan), un hermano adolescente, y los entrañables abuelos, (Judi Dench y Ciarán Hinds).
El mundo del pequeño Buddy transcurre sin mayores sobresaltos en un ambiente de mucha armonía, hasta que un día, mientras jugaba con la tapa del cubo de la basura usándola a modo de escudo vikingo, se ve en medio de un ataque perpetrado por una turba de fanáticos religiosos del credo protestante, contra las familias católicas de su vecindario.
La respuesta del niño ante ese evento inesperado es de completa perplejidad, se queda paralizado sin saber qué hacer. Su madre acude al rescate y providencialmente el escudo de juego se transforma en barrera protectora ante una lluvia de piedras lanzada por el grupo facineroso.
A partir de ese día la violencia irracional producida por la intolerancia, en este caso religiosa, va a cambiar toda la dinámica de la vida, no solo de Buddy y su familia, sino la de todos los habitantes del Norte de Irlanda.
Buddy comienza a convivir en una nueva realidad donde la violencia está presente en cada momento, en cada esquina. Los vecinos de su calle arman una alta barricada en la entrada que da a las casas para protegerse de las pandillas. El ejército ha tomado la ciudad para prevenir los disturbios y desconfía de todo el mundo. Para poder entrar y salir de su calle deben reportarse ante los funcionarios armados. En las noches las luces de los reflectores de vigilancia del ejército, más las antorchas encendidas de los vigilantes civiles, se cuelan por las ventanas del cuarto del niño.
Sin embargo, aún con las dificultades propias de un clima de violencia como el señalado, el pequeño Buddy sigue haciendo su vida. Asiste a la escuela, va al cine con sus padres, visita a sus queridos abuelos, juega en el parque con los amigos, se enamora de una compañera de aula… La gente de algún modo se las ingenia para continuar con sus rutinas. Y no es que se hagan los locos con lo que ocurre, sino simplemente que no quieren dejarse arrebatar sus momentos de felicidad por los alocados arranques de un grupo de radicales.
Pero en cualquier conflicto de este tipo, donde se matan y hieren personas, puede llegar el momento en que las cosas se vuelvan insostenibles y esta guerra de pequeña escala va a tocar la familia de Buddy, obligándolos a hacer cosas que nunca hubiesen deseado.
Durante mucho rato mientras veía la película sentí cierta desazón, no por nada que tuviera que ver con la trama o las actuaciones, sino más bien por algo relacionado con la escenografía y la fotografía. Y no era porque la película estuviese filmada en blanco y negro. Este es un estilo visual con el que se pueden lograr excelentes imágenes. Acá mismo en Belfast hay una escena donde los padres de Buddy cantan y bailan en un club y la fotografía de esa secuencia es realmente exquisita.
Me costó caer en cuenta que lo que no me gustaba de la fotografía era cierta tendencia a presentar imágenes muy planas, con escenarios que parecían irreales, como si fuesen de cartón. Luego, meditando el asunto con calma llegué a la conclusión que era una buena manera de dar a entender la sensación de asfixia y claustrofobia que se puede sentir cuando ya no puedes seguir haciendo la vida que conocías, porque otros te impusieron nuevas reglas y te obligan a vivir encerrado, con restricciones y con miedo.
Porque la presencia del miedo fue el gran cambio que llegó para los habitantes de Irlanda del Norte como consecuencia de la acción de los grupos terroristas. Antes de ese tiempo podían convivir sanamente y en paz católicos y protestantes. Pero una vez que comenzaron las protestas, que no solo eran por motivos religiosos sino que también tenían otros ingredientes de tipo político y separatistas, la gente ya no pudo ser la misma.
A medida que el conflicto fue escalando se definieron claramente los bandos y se fue imponiendo la terrible lógica de la guerra que divide al mundo en amigos y enemigos, en los que son buenos y los malos, creando una situación donde el espacio para la ecuanimidad, la racionalidad y la neutralidad no solo no es aceptado sino que tiene un costo muy alto. Ser neutral puede costar la vida. Si no estás conmigo, estás contra mí fue la lógica que los terroristas impusieron a todos los habitantes de Irlanda.
El director Branagh, quien también es el guionista de la película, quiso presentar una visión del conflicto donde se destaca el amor por encima de la violencia.
Las secuencias de la guerra están allí solo para contextualizar ese momento de la vida de Buddy y las consecuencias que tuvo para él y su familia. Pero no hay un tratamiento exagerado de la violencia, solo lo justo para ubicarnos. En esta película no hay cuerpos desmembrados, ni charcos de sangre, ni ninguna de esas imágenes terribles propias de cualquier conflicto armado. Y no es que no las haya habido porque de seguro que abundaron en el largo tiempo que se mantuvo esa arremetida terrorista. Y es posible que hasta Buddy haya estado cerca de ellas.
Sin embargo, lo que más ven los ojos del niño es a su familia en las cosas más cotidianas. Al abuelo encerando las sillas de montar, a la abuela en sus tareas domésticas, a su padre en el dilema de tener que trabajar en una ciudad y vivir en otra, a sus compañeros de clases buscando la manera de avanzar puestos en el cuadro de honor. Esas son las imágenes que el director quiso rescatar de la tragedia. Como para indicarnos que aún en las situaciones más terribles cada uno de nosotros tiene la alternativa de rescatar del inmenso arsenal de recuerdos depositados en la memoria aquellos que considere más meritorios. A otros niños en situaciones similares solo les ha quedado grabado el horror.
Un aspecto que me gustó mucho del film es el peso que le da el director a la vida de la familia. Buddy vive en una familia extendida, amorosa, donde todos tienen por norma el cuidado común. El pequeño todos los días tiene contactos con tíos, primos, hermanos, abuelos y padres. Una familia donde las diferencias se respetan, donde se mantienen las costumbres que no estorban y donde la religión es valorada pero sin caer en el dogmatismo exagerado. Tanto el abuelo paterno, el único que aparece, como el padre de Buddy son personas tolerantes y creyentes en la importancia del respeto ajeno. Ese es el clima emocional que nutrió a Buddy durante su infancia.
Toda esa fuerte presencia familiar también es una evocación de la nostalgia. Los irlandeses son un pueblo que ha emigrado toda la vida y ese destino de emigrar también le llegó a la familia de nuestro protagonista. Y todo migrante siempre carga con la herida a cuesta de lo que significa romper con esos vínculos familiares tan profundos. En todo el relato se siente mucho esa huella de la nostalgia.
En el aspecto actoral se destaca por mucho la actuación del niño Jude Hill, su extraordinaria actuación quedará fijada en la mente de los espectadores de este film. También vi muy bien a los abuelos, sobre todo Ciarán Hinds, el abuelo; aquí nos hace sentir la presencia de un hombre sencillo pero de una gran sabiduría, que sabe decirles a sus descendientes las palabras precisas para que se puedan levantar ante cualquier adversidad. La señora Judi Dench, la abuela, como siempre destaca en sus actuaciones. El resto del reparto lo vi sin mucha trascendencia.
Solo he visto dos películas de las nominadas para el Oscar, Nightmare Alley y Belfast. Puesto a escoger me inclinaría por la primera. No vi en Belfast los méritos suficientes como para ganar el Oscar. En pocos días sabremos los resultados. No estoy diciendo con esto que estemos ante una mala película. El film bien merece la pena un visionado.

However, everyone has a different way of responding to these difficult situations. Some will feel devastated, paralyzed and without the courage to get up again. Others will manage to overcome any adverse event. Whether we respond in one way or another has a lot to do with the way we learned to see the world from childhood...
The celebrated director, screenwriter and actor, Kenneth Branagh, brings us in Belfast (2021) a deeply personal film, based on his childhood experiences in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s, a time of great political upheaval in that part of the world.
The action takes place in 1969. Buddy (Jude Hill), our protagonist, is a nine-year-old boy. An innocent boy, he lives in a close-knit community in the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is fortunate to have a beautiful family consisting of his mother (Caitríona Balfe), his loving and distant father (Jamie Dornan), a teenage brother, and loving grandparents (Judi Dench and Ciarán Hinds).
Little Buddy's world goes along smoothly in an atmosphere of harmony, until one day, while playing with a garbage can lid as a Viking shield, he finds himself in the middle of an attack by a mob of Protestant religious fanatics on the Catholic families in his neighborhood.
The boy's response to this unexpected event is one of complete bewilderment, he is paralyzed, not knowing what to do. His mother comes to the rescue and providentially the play shield is transformed into a protective barrier against a hail of stones thrown by the group of thugs.
From that day on, the irrational violence produced by intolerance, in this case religious, will change the whole dynamic of life, not only of Buddy and his family, but of all the inhabitants of the North of Ireland.
Buddy begins to live in a new reality where violence is present at every moment, on every corner. The neighbors on his street set up a high barricade at the entrance to the houses to protect themselves from the gangs. The army has taken over the city to prevent riots and is suspicious of everyone. In order to get in and out of their street they must report to armed officials. At night the lights of the army's surveillance spotlights, plus the burning torches of the civilian vigilantes, shine through the windows of the boy's room.
However, even with the hardships of such a climate of violence, little Buddy continues to go about his life. He attends school, goes to the movies with his parents, visits his beloved grandparents, plays in the park with his friends, falls in love with a classmate... People somehow manage to continue with their routines. And it's not that they're being crazy about what's going on, but simply that they don't want to be robbed of their moments of happiness by the crazy outbursts of a group of radicals.
But in any conflict of this kind, where people are killed and injured, there may come a time when things become untenable and this small-scale war is going to touch Buddy's family, forcing them to do things they never would have wished for.
For a long time while watching the film I felt a certain uneasiness, not because of anything to do with the plot or the performances, but rather because of something to do with the scenery and photography. And it wasn't because the film was shot in black and white. This is a visual style with which excellent images can be achieved. Right here in Belfast there is a scene where Buddy's parents sing and dance in a club and the photography of that sequence is really exquisite.
It took me a while to realize that what I didn't like about the photography was a certain tendency to present very flat images, with settings that seemed unreal, as if they were made of cardboard. Then, meditating on the matter calmly, I came to the conclusion that it was a good way to convey the feeling of asphyxia and claustrophobia that can be felt when you can no longer continue doing the life you knew, because others imposed new rules on you and force you to live locked up, with restrictions and fear.
Because the presence of fear was the great change that came for the inhabitants of Northern Ireland as a consequence of the action of the terrorist groups. Before that time, Catholics and Protestants could live together in peace and harmony. But once the protests began, which were not only religiously motivated but also had other political and separatist ingredients, people could no longer be the same.
As the conflict escalated, the sides became clearly defined and the terrible logic of war that divides the world into friends and enemies, into those who are good and those who are bad, was imposed, creating a situation where the space for equanimity, rationality and neutrality is not only not accepted but comes at a very high cost. Being neutral can cost you your life. If you're not with me, you're against me was the logic the terrorists imposed on everyone in Ireland.
Director Branagh, who is also the film's screenwriter, wanted to present a vision of the conflict that emphasizes love over violence.
The war sequences are there only to contextualize that moment in Buddy's life and the consequences it had for him and his family. But there is no exaggerated treatment of violence, just enough to situate us. In this film there are no dismembered bodies, no pools of blood, none of those terrible images typical of any armed conflict. And it's not that there weren't, because there certainly were plenty of them during the long period of the terrorist onslaught. And it is possible that even Buddy was close to them.
However, what the child's eyes see most is his family in the most everyday things. Grandpa waxing the saddles, Grandma in her household chores, his father in the dilemma of having to work in one city and live in another, his classmates looking for ways to advance on the honor roll. These are the images that the director wanted to rescue from the tragedy. As if to show us that even in the most terrible situations, each one of us has the alternative of rescuing from the immense arsenal of memories deposited in our memory those that we consider most meritorious. Other children in similar situations have only been left with the horror.
One aspect I really liked about the film is the weight the director gives to the family's life. Buddy lives in a loving, extended family, where common care is the norm. The little boy has daily contact with uncles, cousins, siblings, grandparents and parents. A family where differences are respected, where customs that do not get in the way are maintained and where religion is valued but without falling into exaggerated dogmatism. Both the paternal grandfather, the only one who appears, and Buddy's father are tolerant people who believe in the importance of respecting others. This is the emotional climate that nurtured Buddy during his childhood.
All that strong family presence is also an evocation of nostalgia. The Irish are a people who have emigrated all their lives and that destiny of emigration also came to the family of our protagonist. And every migrant always carries with him the wound at the cost of what it means to break those deep family ties. Throughout the story, the imprint of nostalgia is strongly felt.
In the acting aspect, the performance of the child Jude Hill stands out by far, his extraordinary performance will remain fixed in the minds of the viewers of this film. I also saw very well the grandparents, especially Ciarán Hinds, the grandfather; here he makes us feel the presence of a simple man but of great wisdom, who knows how to tell his descendants the right words so they can stand up in the face of any adversity. Ms. Judi Dench, the grandmother, as always stands out in her performances. The rest of the cast I saw without much significance.
I have only seen two of the Oscar nominees, Nightmare Alley and Belfast. Given a choice I would go for the former. I didn't see enough merit in Belfast to win the Oscar. In a few days we will know the results. I am not saying that this is a bad film. The film is well worth a viewing.
