Of the films nominated for the next Oscars, this is one of the ones that had heard (read) the fewest comments. In fact, I didn't know anything about it until I checked the list of nominees and saw it there in three categories: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor. I didn't plan on seeing it so soon (at least not before Drive my Car or West Side Story); however, I came across it on Amazon Prime Video while searching for Being the Ricardos and decided to check it out immediately.
De las películas nominadas a la próxima entrega de los premios Oscar, esta es una de las que había oído (leído) menos comentarios. De hecho, no sabía nada de ella hasta que revisé la lista de los nominados y la vi allí en tres categorías: Mejor película, Mejor Guión Adaptado y Mejor Actor Secundario. No planeaba verla tan pronto (al menos no antes que Drive my Car o West Side Story); sin embargo, me topé con ella en Amazon Prime Video mientras buscaba Being the Ricardos y decidí verla inmediatamente.
CODA (2021) is an almost unoriginal story, full of clichés and places common to all initiation films, those that tell the story of the transition between adolescence and adulthood; however, in that almost there is a very important factor. We've all seen dozens of movies like this: Ruby (Emilia Jones) is seventeen years old and works in the mornings with her parents and brother in Gloucester, Massachusetts, before going to class, trying to keep the family fishing business afloat, a tradition which was also dedicated to his grandfather and great-grandfather. In her senior year of high school, motivated by the chance to get to know Miles better (there's almost always a boy), Ruby joins her high school choir. It's not a blind bet because what Ruby loves most in the world is precisely that: singing. In the choir, she meets her enthusiastic teacher, Bernardo Villalobos (played by Eugenio Derbez) who sees something special in her and encourages her to think about the possibility of applying for a scholarship to enter a music school. To do so, however, Ruby would have to leave Gloucester for Boston, leaving her family, who are counting on her to continue the family business.
CODA (2021) es una historia casi poco original, repleta de clichés y lugares comunes a todas las películas de iniciación, las que cuentan ese tránsito entre la adolescencia y la edad adulta; sin embargo en ese casi hay un factor muy importante. Todos hemos visto decenas de películas así: Ruby (Emilia Jones) tiene diecisiete años y trabaja por la mañana con sus padres y su hermano en Gloucester, Massachusetts, antes de ir a clase, tratando de mantener a flote el negocio pesquero familiar, tradición a la que también se dedicaron su abuelo y su bisabuelo. So far, the formula is simple, familiar and worn. There is the personal desire that goes in a different direction than what her family expects of her, the mentor who motivates her, the drama of that dilemma, the boy she has always liked and with whom there is a spark but there are also problems. Even the fact that a teenager wants to dedicate herself to an artistic discipline when her whole family expects something more practical and real from her, none of this is new.
Hasta aquí, la fórmula es simple, familiar y gastada. Está el deseo personal que va en una dirección diferente a lo que su familia espera de ella, el mentor que la motiva, el drama de ese dilema, el chico que siempre le ha gustado y con quien surge una chispa pero también hay problemas... incluso el que una adolescente quiera dedicarse a una disciplina artística cuando toda su familia espera de ella algo más práctico y real, nada de eso es nuevo.
But, and this is what changes everything and gives a new depth to a story that we have seen a thousand times, Ruby is the only hearing member of a deaf family. His father Frank (Troy Kotsur), his mother Jackie (Marlee Matlin), and his older brother Leo (Daniel Durant) are all hearing impaired. The only one who, since birth, can perceive sounds is Ruby. That has meant that, growing up, she has become her family's interpreter to the world. Whenever they have been somewhere where no one understands sign language, it has been Ruby who has had to intervene to translate, for her people and for others, the entire conversation. It seems like a noble task and even an obligation because it is her family, but let's think that this girl has done it since she can remember and until she was seventeen years old. Now, when she faces the most important decision of her life, there are a lot of mixed feelings: responsibility, guilt, love, selfishness, individuality, compassion, understanding... can she find her own path away from theirs? is it selfish of her? how are they going to make it without her?
Pero, y esto es lo que lo cambia todo y dota de una nueva profundidad a una historia que hemos visto mil veces, Ruby es el único miembro oyente de una familia de sordos. Su padre Frank (Troy Kotsur), su madre Jackie (Marlee Matlin) y su hermano mayor Leo (Daniel Durant), todos poseen discapacidad auditiva. La única que, desde su nacimiento, puede percibir los sonidos, es Ruby. Eso ha hecho que, al crecer, se haya convertido en la intérprete de su familia ante el mundo. Siempre que han estado en algún lugar en el que nadie entiende el lenguaje de señas, ha sido Ruby la que ha tenido que intervenir para traducir, a los suyos y a los otros, toda la conversación. Parece una tarea noble e incluso una obligación por tratarse de su familila, pero pensemos que esta niña lo ha hecho desde que tiene uso de razón y hasta sus diecisiete años. Ahora, cuando enfrenta la decisión más importante de su vida, hay un montón de sentimientos encontrados: responsabilidad, culpa, amor, egoísmo, individualidad, compasión, comprensión... ¿puede buscar su propio camino alejándose de los suyos? ¿es egoísta de su parte? ¿cómo van a lograrlo sin ella?
Throughout the film there are also a lot of elements and situations typical of these teenage stories. We have Gertie (Amy Forsyth), Ruby's best friend who finds Leo attractive, there are the classmates from high school who are less friendly with her, the bullying that Ruby has suffered since she was little because she spoke weird (imagine how can talk a girl who has grown up in a deaf family), the charismatic and funny tutor, Mr. V, who encourages her to pursue a musical career and of course, Ruby's desire to follow a different path than what his family does, has done and will do. However, in the latter there is also a greater gradient. It is not the same to be the son of a mechanic and want to play the piano (a sensitive discipline that the father may not understand and criticize, but that he can perceive and if everything goes well he can be moved to see that his son is really good) to being the daughter of a deaf family and wanting to sing.
A lo largo de la película también se presentan un montón de elementos y situaciones típicas de estas historias adolescentes. Tenemos a Gertie (Amy Forsyth), la mejor amiga de Ruby que encuentra atractivo a Leo, están las compañeras de secundaria que son menos amigables con ella, el bullying que Ruby ha sufrido desde que era pequeña porque hablaba raro (imaginen cómo puede hablar una niña que se ha criado en el seno de una familia de sordos), el carismático y divertido tutor, Mr. V, que la alienta a que busque una carrera musical y por supuesto, el deseo de Ruby de seguir un camino distinto a lo que hace, ha hecho y hará su familia. Sin embargo, en esto último también hay un gradiente mayor. No es lo mismo ser el hijo de un mecánico y querer tocar el piano (una disciplina sensible que el padre puede no entender y criticar, pero que puede percibir y si todo sale bien puede ser conmovido al ver que su hijo es realmente bueno) a ser la hija de una familia sorda y querer cantar.
How do you explain to the people you love most in the world that you want to dedicate yourself to singing if they are unable to hear you? How do you explain to them what it is and what it feels like to sing? how can they understand something that is beyond their capacity for sensory perception? That seemed really dramatic to me because Ruby wants to dedicate herself to something that she knows her family, the most important people in her life, can't share with her, something that they can't enjoy. That fact is responsible for some pretty emotional moments throughout the film and if you let yourself get immersed in the plot, you can be moved to tears.
¿Cómo le explicas a las personas que más amas en el mundo que quieres dedicarte a cantar si ellos son incapaces de oírte? ¿cómo les explicas qué es y lo que se siente cantar? ¿cómo pueden ellos comprender algo que va más allá de su capacidad de percepción sensoria? Eso me pareció realmente dramático porque Ruby quiere dedicarse a algo que sabe que su familia, las personas más importantes en su vida, no pueden compartir con ella, algo que no pueden disfrutar. Ese hecho es el responsable de algunos momentos bastante emotivos a lo largo de la película y si uno se deja sumergir en la trama, es posible conmoverse hasta las lágrimas.
Now, although the core of the story seems somewhat original, the truth is that this film is a remake of the 2014 French film La Famille Bélier, directed by Eric Lartigau. That is why it competes at the Oscars in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay. And although all the performances are very good and Marlee Matlin already knows what it is like to win an Oscar for Best Actress (for her role in Children of a Lesser God in 1986), the only one who has obtained a nomination has been Troy Kotsur, for his role as Frank, Ruby's father. To the good script and the good performances, there is a good direction and an enjoyable soundtrack by Marius de Vries that includes Marvin Gaye, Etta James, The Clash and Joni Mitchell, among others. Ruby's final performance of Mitchell's Both Sides Now was one of my favorite scenes.
Ahora bien, aunque el núcleo de la historia parezca algo original, la verdad es que esta película es un remake de la cinta francesa de 2014 La Famille Bélier, dirigida por Eric Lartigau. Es por ello que compite en los Oscaras en la categoría de Mejor Guión Adaptado. Y aunque todas las actuaciones son muy buenas y Marlee Matlin ya sabe lo que es ganar un Oscar como Mejor Actriz (por su papel en Children of a Lesser God en 1986) el único que ha obtenido una nominación ha sido Troy Kotsur, por su papel como Frank, el padre de Ruby. Al buen guión y las buenas actuaciones, se suma una buena dirección y una banda sonora disfrutable a cargo de Marius de Vries que incluye a Marvin Gaye, Etta James, The Clash y Joni Mitchell, entre otros. La interpretación final de Ruby del tema Both Sides Now de Mitchell fue una de mis escenas favoritas.
We must also highlight the inclusive work of this film. The director and screenwriter Sian Heder did a great job in adapting this story that helps to make the public aware of certain cultural aspects in front of people who are hearing impaired. The truth is that, although it is painful to admit it, deafness is always considered as a disease, as a condition that must be cured and that generates discrimination to those who experience it because we leave them the burden of making themselves understood. Shielded by the fact that we are the majority, we unconsciously think that they have to adapt to our world. But it is also their world and we should make an effort to understand them, sign language should be taught in schools. These subjects and others are the ones that come up when watching movies like this one, the inclusion of which is not only reflexive because, which I didn't know, the actors who play Ruby's parents and her brother, all three of them are deaf actors, which reinforces the director's commitment to her message of inclusivity, have any of you seen this movie? También hay que destacar la labor inclusiva de esta película. La directora y guionista Sian Heder hizo un gran trabajo al adaptar esta historia que ayuda a concientizar al público sobre ciertos aspectos culturales frente a las personas que tienen discapacidad auditiva. La verdad es que, aunque sea penoso reconocerlo, la sordera es considerada siempre como una enfermedad, como una condición que debe ser curada y que genera discriminación a quienes la viven porque les dejamos el peso de hacerse entender. Escudados en que somos mayoría, inconscientemente pensamos que tienen que adaptarse a nuestro mundo. Pero también es el mundo suyo y nosotros deberíamos hacer un esfuerzo por entenderlos, el lenguaje de señas debería enseñarse en los colegios. Estos temas y otros son los que surgen al ver películas como esta, cuya inclusión no es sólo reflexiva porque, cosa que no sabía, los actores que interpretan a los padres de Ruby y a su hermano, los tres son actores sordos, lo que refuerza el compromiso de la directora con su mensaje de inclusividad, ¿alguno de ustedes ya vio esta película?
