CODA, which is the acronym (quoted from Wikipedia) for: Child of deaf adult; this tells the story of Ruby Rossi, a girl who is in her last year of school and who in a large part of her life helps in the family business which is fishing, every day she gets up early to help her brother and father who are deaf, just like her mother, that makes her the only member of her family to be able to hear and speak; Ruby lives a life which is tied to a destiny that perhaps she accepts and that her parents approve because they fully depend on her, since they do not trust anyone else, but the reality is different because she discovers that she can achieve many things and one of them can give her a new world where she can do what she loves the most, it is then when she must decide to pursue her dreams or help her family.

The film is directed and written by Sian Heder, this is her second time as director and screenwriter in a feature film; I really liked her work in the direction because she takes advantage of the locations where this story takes place, the photography is excellent in many of the shots no matter how simple the scene is, I think just those where you are sitting Ruby's family eating or working on the boat are the best although the shots that I consider my favorites are just those of her final scenes.
The script is the best, even though this film is a remake of the 2014 French film "La Famille Bélier"; the moment I read the positive opinions about this film (mostly on social media) I was attracted by the story about a girl who is the only one who can hear in her family where deafness is prevalent and that could affect her being able to achieve her dreams, that was enough for me no matter how "Coming-of-Age" it is, this is perfect for me because I really like this kind of stories where an "Outcast" struggles to get a place in the world, now, something that can be considered different in this movie is that it is not only this girl looking to belong to something, but maybe the other members of a big family are the ones who also try to fit in and be accepted for who they are.

A positive point in this film is that the acting weight is divided in all the actors who make up the Rossi family, the four are good protagonists having more than anything interpretations full of passion, not only in scenes where they can argue, but even in which they can make jokes or other family activities, I really like how they do not make a mockery in the interpretation of deaf people, In this movie the stories of these three characters influence a lot in the life of Rossi played by Emilia Jones, who plays a girl who loves her family, so much that she sacrifices a lot for them, to protect them because unfortunately that is what her parents have transmitted to her, the dependence that she has for her family and vice versa is the first obstacle for her and them to achieve better things; As I have already said, their actions are passionate and I believe this is the reason why, not having a voice, they want to be seen by those around them with gestures and signs.

CODA is an excellent film which I really liked the story of how someone can sacrifice everything for the sake of his family, his parents discover that there are many more and not be afraid to want to grow and discover new challenges, I like that it is a story of independence that we should not be afraid of change, as it is necessary to break a monotony that does not teach or help anything; Rubby and his family teach many things in this story, how the fears and frustrations of parents can be passed on to their children and if they are not brave then they will be condemned to live the same, how there is always something more to achieve and not what others expect, that if we have the necessary support we can achieve and overcome our goals, for all this and more, this family story is excellent and one of the best of the year. I think it might be released in South American theaters soon, although you can find it on Apple TV since last August, I hope you have the opportunity to see a good film and enjoy it as I did.

  2. CODA : Bringing More Inclusivity To Screen@macchiata1766d

CODA (child of deaf adults) is a 2021 American remake film based on the French movie, La Famille Bélier. This drama-comedy film directed by Sian Header is already tipped to be an Oscar Nomination. Among its releases, thus far this film received 8 IMDB and overall pleasant reviews. Another interesting fact about this movie is that, the deaf characters are actual deaf actors and actresses. CODA is one of the movies that attempt to portray the reality of living as a child of deaf adults in society.

    Rossi's Journey As a CODA

    Screenshot_2021-08-18_17-57-08.png

Centered in the character of Rossi(Emillia Jones), we will be taken to see how she deals with day-to-day life and also the dynamic that happens in the family. The movie starts with a scene showing Rossi, Frank (The father), and Leo (the brother) fishing with a song playing in the background. In the first few scenes, we wouldn’t know that they were all deaf. But later, Rossi, the daughter who is the only child that’s not deaf, starts talking in ASL (American sign language) with her parents. The movie progresses to show Rossie’s experience as a child of deaf adults at school. She struggled with bullies and also low self-esteem despite having the talent to be a great singer. However, with support from her family and friends, she managed to face hers and her family’s problems.

    Outstanding Casts

    Screenshot_2021-08-18_17-58-29.png

While watching this movie, I watched the version with the unsubtitled ASL. Since I don’t know ASL, it was like watching a silent movie except with a few scenes where Rossi was talking. The choosing of the casts were outstanding as it was actually casting deaf actors and actresses. The director itself through an interview with BBC mentioned that deafness isn’t something that people wear. I think that’s a great step towards more actual inclusion in the film industry.

The movie definitely opened up my eyes to the day-today life of a CODA. Their differences shouldn’t be something to joke about nor a reason to bully them. The movie was quite successful in raising awareness about CODA and invite us to become more compassionate if we ever encounter a deaf person or even a CODA. I would personally love to see this movie played during an English class or media class at schools. As this movie is a great medium to introduce students about the idea of empathy, respect, compassion, and even inclusivity.

When you watch a movie, the filming technique is also something that you need to pay attention to. Overtime, as you sharpen your senses, you will understand a bit of cinematography and the common techniques used for certain genres of film. My impression with the technique used to film this movie was great. With low and soft lighting, the choosing of the camera angles, and even the sound, they were all fitting to build the atmosphere of the movie. It was like watching a documentary film that I never wanted to end. There is no doubt, this movie gets 8 IMDB. If I were to rate this movie, I would rate it 7 out of 10. The message in this movie was quite powerful and I do hope, in the future, there will be more films like CODA.
