I'll start with the winner of the main category and that the days leading up to the awards show was cemented as the favorite with the Apple Tv lobby. It was the big winner, but I want to ask a question that I would love for all my dear readers to answer. Did Coda deserve to win Best Picture? Wait a minute. Don't answer me yet.
Through no fault of my own I was unable to watch the ceremony, but learning that Coda received the biggest award in American cinema, on the one hand, gave me some joy, being a production that houses all the components of independent cinema of which I am a fan. It was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and acquired by Apple tv. But on the other hand, seeing the other nominees, one of which was my favorite, I can't help but wonder, is it really better than the others?
The story, an adaptation of a French film that was the top grosser in that country about nine years ago, is very cute. I can't lie, I liked it, it was funny, making me laugh in several scenes and at the same time it moved me, especially in its last act. Besides its message about following our dreams, not giving up, family support and above all love. A movie made to please everyone.
The story is simple, the Rossi family has been fishing all their lives. They are Frank and Jackie, who have two children, Leo and Ruby. They are all deaf and dumb except for Ruby, who is the youngest daughter, a teenager who is in charge of being the interpreter for her family to the rest of the world and they have become totally dependent on her. So when Ruby decides she wants to study music, because she has a passion for singing, her mother balks at the idea. Ruby is influenced by the school choir teacher, which she joins first because she likes a boy, but also because music is what she likes. She feels trapped and tired and must debate between sacrificing her dreams for the sake of the family or going her own way in search of her own destiny.
Empezaré por la ganadora de la categoría principal y que los días previos a la entrega de premios se consolidó como favorito con el lobby de Apple Tv. Fue la gran ganadora, pero quiero hacer una pregunta que me encantaría que todos mis queridos lectores respondieran. ¿Merecía Coda ganar el premio a la mejor película? Espera un momento. Por causas ajenas a mi voluntad no pude ver la ceremonia, pero al enterarme de que Coda recibía el mayor premio del cine americano, por un lado, me dio cierta alegría, al ser una producción que alberga todos los componentes del cine independiente del cual soy fanático. Fue proyectada en el Festival de Cine de Sundance y adquirida por Apple tv. Pero por otro lado, viendo las otras nominadas, una de las cuales era mi favorita, no puedo evitar preguntarme, ¿es realmente mejor que las otras?

No puedo mentir, me gustó, fue divertida, haciéndome reír en varias escenas y al mismo tiempo me conmovió, especialmente en su último acto. Además de su mensaje sobre seguir nuestros sueños, no rendirse, el apoyo de la familia y sobre todo el amor. Una película hecha para gustar a todos.

I like to question everything when I am told realistic stories and this is where I was trying to make sense of the story. Ruby is a minor, Leo is the older brother and her parents have been deaf and dumb all their lives, so how did they live before Ruby was born? How did they communicate? The father has always been a fisherman, how did he do it before Ruby existed? It's just that so much dependence on Ruby to be the one who serves as their communication with the rest of the world seemed like overkill to me. It seemed like a pretext to tell the story, but it really leaves those questions up in the air for me. I don't know if I missed that part, I don't know if they explained it in the movie. I watched it at home, I may have been distracted for a moment missing something.
I drew my own conclusions, I think the family communicated as best they could with people, but as Ruby got older, they started a process of total dependency, they got used to their daughter taking on that responsibility, they were comforted by her being the translator and became lazy in that aspect, because it's so easy and quick for us to get used to the good stuff. It is set in the present time, so they can communicate using tablets where they can write, right?
I emphasize this point, because when I was a teenager, I met in a video game place I frequented a young deaf-mute, I do not know sign language, but that was not an impediment for us to become friends, he communicated with me and managed to understand most of the things he tried to tell me. When he didn't understand, I would explain in my own way and he would sign to me again, until he managed to understand. Years later we met many times in the street and we communicated, people were always so reckless, they just stared at us. The fact that he was deaf and mute never prevented him from finding a way to communicate with people who did not know sign language. For that reason, the dependence they show in the film seems unconscionable to me.
There is a scene (possible spoilers) where father and son are detained on the boat for not being accompanied by someone who is not deaf. But how did they do it before, how did father and son do it before Ruby was born? Even when she was a baby, please, screenwriter, answer me, how did they do their job as fishermen? Because the movie emphasizes that it's the family's lifelong trade.
Me gusta cuestionar todo cuando me cuentan historias realistas y aquí es donde intentaba dar sentido a lo narrado. Ruby es menor de edad, Leo es el hermano mayor y sus padres han sido sordomudos toda su vida, así que ¿Cómo vivían antes de que Ruby naciera? ¿Cómo se comunicaban? Años después nos encontramos muchas veces en la calle y nos comunicábamos, la gente como siempre era tan imprudente, se quedaba mirando. El hecho de ser sordo y mudo nunca le impidió encontrar la manera de comunicarse con las personas que no conocían el lenguaje de señas. Por eso, la dependencia que muestran en la película me parece desmesurado.
Hay una escena (posibles spoilers) en la que padre e hijo son detenidos en el barco por no ir acompañados de alguien que no sea sordo. Pero, ¿Cómo lo hacían antes? ¿Cómo lo hacían padre e hijo antes de que naciera Ruby? Incluso cuando era un bebé, por favor, guionista, contéstame ¿Cómo hacían su trabajo de pescadores? Porque la película hace hincapié en que es el oficio de toda la vida de la familia.
Director Siam Heder does an okay job, but not that she stands out much, she is not a director with a marked and defined personal style. I saw a few years ago her previous film with Elliot Page: Tallulah, which had a good acceptance, but she is still not a director that stands out above the others, she does not take risks, she goes for the sure thing, what most of the audience will like. However, I like the fact that she is a woman filmmaker and this film could be her great springboard.
What I have no qualms in highlighting and admiring is the work of the cast, starting with Emilia Jones in the role of Ruby Rossi. The British actress manages to convey so many emotions with her gestures, I felt her acting very natural, she looks great on screen and had to learn sign language for the character. A work worthy of being recognized and applauded by the audience. I have always said it when I see these new talents emerge: follow her trajectory and keep an eye out for her next projects. I hope to see her in other movies and that she chooses her next characters well, well, I hope she has a good agent who will get her great jobs.
The other actors that make up the Rossi family are deaf in real life, that doesn't mean that their job was easier, on the contrary, I think it's great that they decided to have really deaf actors, that gives more realism to the story and at the same time it's a form of non-forced inclusion. I'm all for inclusion in the entertainment industry, but not forced. Coda, to me, is an example of inclusion done right.
That's why I agree with the award given to Troy Kotsur, it was time or never. When could he be nominated again? But not only for that, it's that he really gets it right. For those who criticize the award to the actor let me tell you that he has years dedicated to acting, both in theater and film. The actor made me laugh, there are hilarious scenes, because he is a very fiery deaf man hahaha, but the work is impeccable in conveying the emotional state of the character with his look and gestures. Daniel Durant another deaf actor and who plays Ruby's older brother, his presence is quite secondary, although he has a certain scene that was his moment to highlight.
I want to mention apart the actress Marlee Matlin who plays Ruby's mother and that at first we may think that she behaves a little selfish by not wanting to support her daughter, but in reality I saw it as fear of losing her daughter, who is an important pillar for the family balance, but the love of mother will make her understand that her daughter needs to fly with her own wings, without carrying the weight of a responsibility that she never asked for, that was imposed on her.
Something that almost no one has said in the publications I read some time ago, is that the actress was the first deaf actress to win an Oscar award more than thirty years ago, in the eighties, for the film Children of a Lesser God. Why does no one talk about that? Do these facts matter? I think so, and in this particular case it is important to say it, because it was a woman who had to endure the abuse of her former partner, William Hurt, an extraordinary actor who unfortunately behaved very badly with her, something that the actor, in life, acknowledged and asked for forgiveness.
These kinds of things are the important things to discuss and not Will's slapping of Rock, something that completely overshadowed the award-winning films and people. But that's the way the world is today, as we saw in Don't Look Up, that's why there are many who didn't like that other movie, because they see themselves reflected in it. What an exaggerated movie! A silly movie! That's what many say about Don't Look Up, but while the world is in crisis they make memes and discuss if the millionaire Will was right or not. Ah?
Back to the initial question, did Coda deserve to win? Despite all the positive things I've said about the film, comparing it to other nominees, my answer is no. I don't think it was the best film. I'm not going to compare it to my favorite, but to others. There's no way that Coda is superior to Drive My Car, to give you an example. I know, Drive My Car received the award for Best International Film, but it was also competing in the main category and it's a much better film than Coda. Please.
Anyway, yes it's a movie I recommend watching, it's funny and emotional. It's a nice film and in a way I'm glad it won, maybe that will make viewers more interested in smaller productions and not wait for a corporation to buy them so they can see them. Hopefully most audiences will be encouraged to seek out these types of films on their own. Although I see it as difficult, I think the film will go on the list of those other winners from the past that ended up being forgotten. Let's hope I'm wrong.
La directora Siam Heder hace un trabajo correcto, pero no es que destaque mucho, no es una directora con un estilo personal marcado y definido. Vi hace unos años su anterior película con Elliot Page: Tallulah, que tuvo una buena aceptación, pero sigue sin ser una directora que destaque por encima de las demás, no arriesga, va a lo seguro, a lo que le va a gustar a la mayoría del público. Ahora bien, me gusta que sea una mujer cineasta y esta película puede ser su gran trampolín.
Lo que no tengo reparos en destacar y admirar es el trabajo del reparto, empezando por Emilia Jones en el papel de Ruby Rossi. La actriz británica logra transmitir tantas emociones con sus gestos, sentí su actuación muy natural, se ve muy bien en pantalla y tuvo que aprender el lenguaje de señas para el personaje. Un trabajo digno de ser reconocido y aplaudido por el público. Siempre lo he dicho cuando veo surgir estos nuevos talentos: seguir su trayectoria y estar atentos a sus próximos proyectos. Espero verla en otras películas y que elija bien sus próximos personajes, bueno, espero que tenga un buen agente que le consiga grandes trabajos.
Los otros actores que conforman la familia Rossi son sordos en la vida real, eso no significa que su trabajo haya sido más fácil, al contrario, me parece genial que hayan decidido contar con actores realmente sordos, eso le da más realismo a la historia y al mismo tiempo es una forma de inclusión no forzada. Estoy a favor de la inclusión en la industria del entretenimiento, pero no forzada. Coda, para mí, es un ejemplo de inclusión bien hecha.

Algo que casi nadie ha dicho en las publicaciones que leí hace tiempo, es que la actriz fue la primera actriz sorda en ganar un premio Oscar hace más de treinta años, en la década de los ochenta, por la película Hijos de un Dios Menor. ¿Por qué nadie habla de eso? ¿Importan estos hechos? Yo creo que sí, y en este caso concreto es importante decirlo, porque fue una mujer que tuvo que soportar los malos tratos de su anterior pareja, William Hurt, un extraordinario actor que desgraciadamente se portó muy mal con ella, algo que el actor, en vida, reconoció y pidió perdón.
Este tipo de cosas son las importantes a discutir y no la bofetada de Will a Rock, algo que eclipsó por completo las películas y personas premiadas. Pero así es el mundo de hoy, como lo vimos en No mires hacia arriba, por eso hay muchos a los que no les gustó esa otra película, porque se ven reflejados en ella. ¡Qué película tan exagerada! ¡Una película tonta! Eso es lo que muchos dicen de No mires hacia arriba, pero mientras el mundo está en crisis hacen memes y discuten si el millonario Will tenía razón o no. ¿Ah?
Volviendo a la pregunta inicial, ¿merecía ganar Coda? A pesar de todas las cosas positivas que he dicho de la película, comparándola con otras nominadas, mi respuesta es no. When I found out they were making this movie about the Williams sisters' father, the first thing I did was look up who the producers were, that is, the people who put up the money and who ultimately call the shots because they own the movie. I also saw that Venus and Serena were executive producers, this lowered my expectations. why?
When biopics are made and family members are involved in the production, the result will always be a sugar-coated version of the facts. Just remember the Freddy Mercury biopic where they toned down too many things.

I wanted to see a good sports drama that showed the beginnings of these women who have made sports history, but the least I saw here was sport.
With Will Smith as producer and star, I could already imagine what the movie would be like. I know, and so do many others, the type of characters Will likes to play. So the story would be sweetened twice as much for Will to feel comfortable and finally get the coveted Best Actor award.
The movie is made for him to shine, but comparing his performance to other characters he played in the past where he was not a producer. This is not really his best performance, so the award, as has happened on other occasions, is given to him for other reasons, leaving out those who really did a superior job, such as Andrew Garfield and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Con Will Smith como productor y protagonista, ya me imaginaba cómo sería la película. Conozco, y muchos otros también, el tipo de personajes que le gusta interpretar a Will. Así que la historia se endulzaría el doble para que Will se sintiera cómodo y consiguiera por fin el codiciado premio al mejor actor.
La película está hecha para que brille, pero comparando su actuación con otros personajes que interpretó en el pasado, donde no era productor. Recuerdo que en el pasado otros raperos le atacaron por su estilo de rap ligero.
Por supuesto, el verdadero Richard tiene mucho mérito por haber criado a sus dos hijas para que fueran las mejores tenistas de la historia. Hace años había leído artículos sobre lo estricto que es ese hombre y la obsesión en hacer de sus hijas las mejores en ese deporte.
I do not agree with selling this man's method as the only way to achieve glory. Every person is different, every nuclear family is different. What worked for Venus and Serena doesn't mean it will work for the rest of the kids who enter the sport with the ambition to be the best. Also, that sports sequence, the only important sequence in the whole movie, is shot very blandly. The director is erratic to shoot a sports sequence. Even Woody Allen did better tennis sequences in the movie Match Point and there, tennis was just a part of the context. Another good film about the sport is Borg vs McEnroe, but this director doesn't seem to have seen it. Instead of focusing on the game, he spends time on Richard and his poker face in the hallway. Could this be a director's decision or the producer/actor's?
King Richard seemed like a standard movie to me, nothing to shock or excite me, it even made me yawn just watching Will's grumpy face throughout the movie. It doesn't transmit anything, maybe that's why it won, for not transmitting anything hahahaha Yeah, hate me Will fan, come and slap me.
No estoy de acuerdo en vender el método de este hombre como la única manera de alcanzar la gloria. Cada persona es diferente, cada núcleo familiar es diferente. Lo que funcionó para Venus y Serena no significa que vaya a funcionar para el resto de los niños que entran en el deporte con la ambición de ser los mejores. El éxito de las hermanas Williams se debe no sólo a su padre, sino también a un montón de factores que, por obra del destino, confluyeron en ese momento concreto.
Se ha hablado mucho del pasado del padre de las Williams, incluidos los rumores de malos tratos, pero obviamente eso no se muestra en la película y no sabemos si es cierto. Sólo la familia lo sabe. Aunque en la película sí se muestra la locura de que decidió tener dos hijas tenistas antes de procrearlas, que empezó a planear su método antes de que nacieran, sólo porque vio que una tenista ganaba unos 40 mil dólares. Es decir, el motivo fue la ambición de ganar dinero con sus hijas, eso es lo que cuentan en la película, no me lo estoy inventando, es el mensaje que transmiten. Salir de la pobreza gracias a sus hijas. Ahora bien, ¿es replicable este método de Williams? ¿Alguien se anima a ponerlo en práctica y ver si le funciona?
En cuanto a los arcos argumentales de la película, hay uno en concreto que ha molestado a la famosa ex tenista española Arantxa Sánchez VIcario, quien ha dado declaraciones a la prensa , expresando que la ponían como la villana de la película. Atención, posible spoiler: concretamente la escena en la que su personaje pide un descanso para ir al baño, rompiendo por completo la concentración de Venus Williams. En la vida real la pausa para ir al baño ocurrió, pero no en el momento en que se sitúa en la película, colocando a la española como un mal ejemplo de juego limpio. Habría que consultar a un experto en tenis que haya vivido esa época para que nos diga cuánto hay de realidad y de ficción en esa secuencia de la película. Son hechos no tan antiguos, por lo que hay que tener cuidado de no tergiversar lo que realmente sucedió. Puedes buscar la información en Google para compararla.
Además, esa secuencia deportiva, la única importante de toda la película, está rodada de forma muy sosa. El director es errático para rodar una secuencia deportiva. Incluso Woody Allen hizo mejores secuencias de tenis en la película Match Point y allí, el tenis era sólo una parte del contexto. Otra buena película sobre este deporte es Borg vs McEnroe, pero este director parece no haberla visto. En lugar de centrarse en el juego, dedica tiempo a Richard y a su cara de póquer en el pasillo. ¿Será una decisión del director o del productor/actor?
King Richard me ha parecido una película estándar, nada que me impacte o emocione, incluso me ha hecho bostezar sólo con ver la cara de mala leche de Will durante toda la película. No transmite nada, quizás por eso ganó, por no transmitir nada jajajaja Sí, ódiame fan de Will, ven y abofetéame.

Just because I didn't really like King Richard doesn't mean I don't recommend it, I know a lot of people liked the movie you may find it fascinating, I just expressed my impressions. I will hope in the future that someone dares to tell this story from another point of view, without a lot of sugar.
I would watch Coda again, at least the entire cast manages to make me feel something and it's a beautiful story of freedom and growth.
But before I say goodbye, I ask again, did Coda deserve to win Best Picture? I want to know your opinion
El hecho de que no me haya gustado mucho King Richard no significa que no la recomiende, sé que a mucha gente le ha gustado la película puede que te fascine, sólo he expresado mis impresiones. Esperaré en el futuro que alguien se atreva a contar esta historia desde otro punto de vista, sin mucho azúcar.
De las dos películas volvería a ver con gusto Coda, al menos todo el reparto consigue hacerme sentir algo y es una bonita historia de libertad y crecimiento.
Pero antes de despedirme, vuelvo a preguntar, ¿merecía Coda ganar el premio a la mejor película? Quiero saber tu opinión
